Michael Ironside in his younger days. I would have loved to see him as a Trek captain in the style of his Starship Troopers character, ie a grizzled, take-no-prisoners leader, but would do anything for his people. Sort of a Lorca kind of captain, but Michael Ironside.

Make me miss my old Siamese derp. He used to sleep in the most ungainly positions ever, all legs dangling and splayed across each other. Here's to you, Hanky Plank.
He had no time for any of my nonsense, and blanked any of the catty attract noises I tried to entice him with.

I think there might be some sarcasm going on there given the tone of the post, and the fact the upshot of it was to propose a vote on whethe the rules should be changed post-reopening to only permit pictures of "John Oliver looking sexy".

Good point, well made.
So some people out there have clearly been successful in persuading their instance to connect to Kbin, as if I browse "All" there are some kbin.social hosted communities (or "magazines", as they call them). But I've had pretty limited success myself, at least from Jerboa. Can anyone suggest a workflow whereby I can find and subscribe to Kbin magazines that are not already showing in "all"?

I actually have one of those (a JML thing I got for Christmas as a stocking filler, but I imagine the one in Aldi is made at the same Taiwanese plant). I might have a crack at doing one on a shirt I dont care that much about and see how it turns out. No harm, no foul I suppose.

Aren't British Problems first world problems by definition? Considering the sort of thing we post on here, or on the equivalent forum on The Site That Shall Not Be Named. I can't imagine, for example, many Syrians being bothered by the fact that their local Greggs has run out of vegan sausage rolls.

The last time we tried to get the internet to seriously decide on something we got Boaty McBoatface.
And lo, the Internet looked down upon it's handiwork, and verily, t'was awesome.
All posts in these (business) subs can be advertisements, perfect.
And nobody will ever go there. And, two years down the track, u/spaz will hoik up the pricing or cut them off entirely because they're making money off of a non-profitable Reddit. "We want to work with the business subs but they're not interested in talking to us and have all thrown their toys out of the pram and shut down".
As title.

But the phased cloak had problems, and is is seemingly a dead end for the ability to fire while cloaked.
Why? Wouldn't a photon torpedo immediately pass beyond the phased cloaking field and then immediately return to normal phase? Assume a phaser beam would the the same.
Unless we're saying there's no "field" as such, but the entire mass of the ship is altered and thus any projectile would still stay out of phase beyond the ship. If so, couldn't a torpedo have an integrated "rephase" module added? Problem solved.

"alright geez, giz a skone"
"Good evening my good man. My name is Lord Ponsonby Smythe Smythe Smythe. Could I trouble you for one of those skons?"
Works both ways.
Edit: my friend, who I am currently drinking pints with, says "skon is more northern but posh and scone is more estuary".
And he's an expert and a cunt (his own description of himself).

But I am common as muck. I haven't met an H I haven't dropped and I'm proper Bermondsey and Millwall. And it's a "skone". In fact the only people who call it a "skon" in my experience in deepest darkest Saaaaaaaf Laaaaaaandaaan are posh cnuts.
Spock has a cat. Your argument is invalid.

I'll bite.
It's a "skone". Clue is in the fact it's spelt "scone", ie just substitute the K for a C. It it was a skon it would be called a scon.

Maybe we should be a bit more, well, casual?
I occasionally got frustrated with how trigger happy the mods over at the Place That Shall Not Be Named were on CasualUK. Posts that promoted some fun discussion and were upvoted after the first couple of minutes of them going up were still deleted and deemed as "moaning" or "low effort".
Perhaps a clearer definition of "low effort" might be "it took you 10 seconds and everyone ignored it", and rather than a ban against moaning, perhaps we might ban "boring moaning". If the moan is entertaining, satirical, prompts engagement it should be left alone.
Just my 2p's worth.

I can't have at it, that's the problem, that's what I'm looking for help with. If I try to sign up the progress spinner never stops and there are errors about closed websockets in my browser developer console. That's what I'm seeking help on.
(in terms of propagation, there are ancient posts in c/cricket@lemmy.ml that I can see via lemmy.world but not on my "home" instance of feddit.uk. In fact on feddit.uk c/cricket@lemmy.ml appears entirely empty and has for several days).
Loccy 1 year ago • 66%
Like I said, I'm already on a different instance (feddit.uk) but the instance I'm on seems a bit flaky. There are communities on other instances that don't show any content, whereas they do on lemmy.world. I'd heard that lemmy.world was handling the influx of new users quite well in comparison, so thought I'd try to switch.
Hi all. Have tried on a few different devices, but I am struggling to sign up to lemmy.world. (My current instance is a bit hit and miss with pulling in non-local posts), and the talk around the communities is that lemmy.world seems to be the most stable instance. I fill in the sign up form, hit the button and get the swirly progress spinner for ever. If I look in the browser developer console, I see a "websocket closed" error (although it does then follow up with "websocket reconnected"). Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm a bit more cynical, given the circumstances. When I read Red Reader was getting an exception I checked it out and, as a general purpose Reddit app for Android, I found it clunky in comparison to apps like Infinity and Boost. I wonder if that was the actual rationale, i.e. choose an app that's not as appealing an alternative to the official app so that you can cite it as justification that you are listening to app developers who "do it right" with respect to open source, accessibility etc.

Any time I try to go the Kbin web site as a regular end user, it routes through a Cloudflare "are you human?" Captcha. I wonder if this is causing the issue. If I try a similar URL on my instance I get "404: couldn't find community", but if my instance is getting the same Cloudflare nonsense back, it would probably explain it.
Just one human finger to turn the "awww" into "OWWWW!"

Absolutely. The frustrating thing is that there was no need for it to be like this. If they'd have just said "look, there's no easy way to cut this, but the third party apps cut into our bottom line and we've got to a place where we can't let that slide any more", I think people would have grumbled but understood. Have a decent period of transition time (I'm talking 6-12 months) during which they have a big push to bring the official app at least close to feature parity with the third party apps. I wouldn't call that "everyone's a winner", but it would have been something everyone could have lived with, I think.
