I mean, people are allowed to have opinions. They may not be good opinions but thats the glory of opinions. You can Gordon Ramsey someone's codebase, and someone else can Gordon Ramsey their comment, as you just did.

I was specifically referring to the inclusion of lgbt being referred to as rainbow washing. I may have misunderstood the intention of your post, but my first read through and skimming of the article itself implied that it was a bad thing that they were trying to be inclusive. Like I said, all for getting rid of data collection and AI, but if its going to be around I would prefer it be representative of the entire spectrum of humanity and not just the conversvative straight monogomous/monotheistic majority

I'm all for shitting on AI but the anti-lgbt language in this post was not needed in any capacity. Most if not all of the examples given could also apply to a straight person.

Here is a picture of my Dads TP-Link KC401. I borrowed it to prove my point. It requires a Kasa home account. I tried signing up for one to see if it has any sort of RTSP I could hook up to, unfortunately I can't even sign up for an account. I tried first with a temporary email, then my own domain, then I tried protonmail. It rejected all three. Doesnt seem very privacy friendly to me at all if I need an email provider like Google to even sign up to use the damn thing. I can't find any sort of documentation online about these cameras having RTSP. In fact what I found was the opposite..
The github page you linked there, while being a great option for people who have already drank the koolaid, is not an ideal solution in any capacity. Per the readme.md
If your camera still works with integration: Block internet access of camera if you are using firmware build 230921 and higher
If your camera no longer works with integration: Block internet access and factory reset camera or Use older firmware than build 230921 and optionally factory reset camera
Meaning, they updated it to prevent you from using it. To use it now you have to hack your way around it and pray it doesn't accidentally come back online. IP Cam =/= Internet Connected cam. IP Cam means I own the camera, and it doesnt have to phone home to the manufacturer for "updates" that take away functionality.

The catch is that you can't use a tp link camera as an IP camera and anyone at their office could just tune into your home whenever they wanted.

I use CalyxOS and keep airplane mode on when I'm not expecting any calls over the celluar network 🤷♂️ I suppose youre right that Ive never seen an ad for Discord, I also just haven't seen ads in well over 5 years. I did assume they advertised so if Im wrong thats on me. I refuse to be a product and feel others should as well. If people want to sell themselves in exchange for a money-less service I suppose thats their own decision.

Phone number point is stupid to bring up because most public discord servers turn on the setting that prevents you from speaking until you've verified a phone number, and I'd trust signal with my number over discord any day of the week. I never said general users should jump ship, I said that the reason they DONT is because other platform dont have the advertising budget, nor the user base to make users jump ship. People act like they give a shit about features but as soon as they can only talk to their friends because they all left for one platform, even if its "worse" because of the feature set, they WILL follow or be left out. Its why I originally joined Discord, I didn't want to leave Skype but thats where everyone was going. I am now taking the other side where I refuse to use discord. I use Signal and Matrix. if people want to talk to me, they talk to me on there or not at all, and ykno what. Ive gotten 20+ people to switch.

They definitely sell user data. There is no doubt in my mind about it. I think the idea that Signal can't be used in the same way is down to the marketing, especially sense Discord is now trying to transition away from gaming https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/discord-is-pivoting-away-from-games-to-become-your-place-to-talk- Signal literally has the same features + more than discord. You dont have to reveal your phone number to strangers anymore. Usernames are there. 1k+ member group chats EXIST. (I'm in one for fight for the future), screen sharing exists in calls. Theres no reason to need discord unless thats just where everyone else is.
JameUwU 2 weeks ago • 100%
You can screen share on signal so that argument makes absolutely no sense. and people down voting me without explaining why are probably too stubborn to switch away from discord.

Genuine question who is still using snapchat. I deleted my account ages ago, not because I was on my privacy crusade like I am now, but because I noticed all of my friends stopped using it and everyone else on there was like 5 to 10 years my junior.

There are viable alteratives, but they aren't making money and can't advertise. Signal is a prime example, its an amazing platform with feature parity + more to Discord. Regardless of how well a platform is polished, you need users. People will use the shittiest platform ever if it has users (Twitter and Reddit come to mind).
JameUwU 2 weeks ago • 100%
The point was not the amount of money they are making, the point is that regardless you are being sold for profit. Any platform that is ad-driven should be avoided if you want any form of privacy.

If you turn off the telemetry like I said in my comment that no longer becomes an issue. In terms of blocking your digital fingerprint Brave is going to be better than every popular Chromium based browser. See the link I posted in the original comment.

Issue with this argument is that if you are found to have hacked their servers and stolen an API key you bet your ass theyre suing you for stealing their property. Their argument is "laws for thee not for me". I agree with you if we are only talking about copyright law.

If you want Something you can set up and forget, use YUNOHOST, otherwise learn how to use docker containers and pick any server distro. Debian, Fedora Server, Ubuntu Server, MicroOS, hell OpenWrt will all do fine.

If I were you and needed to use a chromium based browser, I would go for brave with maximum privacy settings turned on and all the Crypto shit and brave "features" turned off. Ungoogled chromium is a good project but its not as refined as Brave is. See here: https://privacytests.org/
If I were you I'd go for Librewolf or Mullvad browser if you dont need Chromium. The reason people say this is because Google has a sort of monopoly on the browser space right now as Chromium takes up Almost 80% of the marketshare, meaning that Google will ultimately get to decide what features live, and what features die. If Chromium market share was down at 40% or so, it wouldnt matter if you used Brave or not, but thats the reality we live in.

People shit on Ubuntu because its owned by a for profit corporation that hosts an app manager that isnt open source on the backend. Not sure why you heard hate for mint, its perfectly fine. As a beginner I'd definitely go for Mint. If you Genuinely want to try but feel like you need someone to hold your hand, I can add you on Matrix (or discord... ugh) if you want a person to reference.

And then no one will use Signal because there is no way someone won't notice immediately. It is OPEN SOURCE. Look at the xz backdoor that got figured out in less than a day. Signal is more popular than a Linux tool for extracting files. Stupid statement.

Hi, I dont plan to have a child for at least a few years, but sometimes I think about how I would raise them. I think about how parents today let their kids use the internet pretty much unmonitored, and let them watch and bring them to movies that are by most accounts, just flashing colors. Theres a few good ones Ive heard about such as Bluey, or movies like Luca, but I really dont think I'd want my kid to be watching Cocomelon, Pinkfong (baby shark), or any movie put out by Illumination. I especially dont want to allow them to use any kid of social media during their developmental years. However, I know for a lot of kids this is the norm, and I really dont want my kid to get bullied or to hate me for not letting them have what their friends have. What do current parents about the environment their kids are growing up in, and what would be good things to consider as I start to get closer to the age where I feel comfortable taking care of a little fella?
Sorry if this is slightly off topic, I searched for communities about tech support on here and couldn't find anything that wasn't dead in the water. Basically I want to use WPA3 on my Network, however my Windows partition doesn't support WPA3 for some reason. I only keep that piece of trash around for school work. My Fedora Linux partition can use WPA3 just fine so I assume this is a driver issue. Is there any way to use Linux WiFi drivers on Windows? (inb4 how the turntables)
Hello, I self host an email server and I am currently using mailcow-dockerized, however I have found their community support to be extremely lackluster, and their software having major annoyances that have either gone unfixed for years or are so specific in scope that going through the song and dance of submitting it to their GitHub using their lengthy bug reporting process isnt worth it (because most of what they ask for is unrelated to the bug I'm reporting) I want an email server that I can allow my friends and family to use, and that can generate random aliases they can use when signing up for websites or software that can be easily deleted if they no longer use the service or want their spam. I dont have very many requirements other than that one feature, and the software either being stable enough on its own, or the community being nicer around supporting their users. Thanks in advance.
Hello Lemmy, this is my first time posting instead of commenting so if this is the wrong place or I'm formatting this wrong feel free to let me know how to fix it. One of my healthcare providers (US) has just alerted me I've been affected by a Data breach (from February, so glad to see they took it seriously and alerted people quickly). The breach supposedly affects Full name, address DoB, and health information such as illnesses and medications. They have sent a 2 page information packet that gives recommendations such as calling the three creditors and a "free" 5 year subscription to an experian credit monitoring service. Upon checking the website they want my full name, DoB, SSN, Address, email, phone number, and I'm sure if they could my blood type and fingerprints. What I would like to know is are these services they are providing me with "safe" for a threat model that involves keeping my information out of the hands of advertisers, bad actors and people who don't need it? Do they already have this information and are just asking to verify who I am? I'd prefer not to have my identity stolen due to someone else's computer having a security flaw. What's my best course of action to preserve my privacy while not having my identity stolen? Thanks for any help in advance.
