Hi folks! I‘m currently setting up a „fediverse vps“ so to speak but federation is no joke so far. I got lemmy, mastodon and matrix running pretty stable now (in docker and behind nginx proxy manager which seems to be very rare). The next step is enabling federation and so far it’s brutal. I broke matrix by changing up the .well-known stuff and now nothing works. I think my knowledge is just lacking at this point. Does anyone have experience with a setup like this and wants to help? I just came up with something, no idea if its good but you judge that: **TL;DR: Can we make a browser extention or something that gives us a button to copy an entire comment chain with crucial, niche advice to a lemmy post or is that gone since the API went down?** I often google things for work and hobbies, code snippets, log entries, ways to make my insane docker setups work. For example, I got a lemmy instance working in docker with [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/nginxproxymanager/comments/1485y0d/getting_lemmy_running_with_a_separate_nginx_proxy/). Very often, I end up on reddit. If the post or comment in question is helpful, I'd like to upvote or ask a follow up question. For that I still need my reddit account. But for the "praise helpful comment" I could also do that here. Some people link to the comment/post which also brings back traffic to reddit (which I dont like). So I'd probably just copy the post (and/or comment chain in question) to a new post on lemmy. It would go a little like this: - User1: "Post describing a topic" - User2: Helpful comment nr 1 - User1: Follow up question - User2: Helpful comment nr 2 For that, I'd need some kind of automation. Since the API is gone, I don't know if that is possible but the option to "copy entire comment chain up to this comment" would definitely be awesome. Recently I read through the comments on a post and someone suggested OP should „just read the room“. I have been told this since I was young and it triggers me every time. Being unaware of social dynamics in a situation is a thing a lot of autistic people I know struggle with. „Reading the room“ in my understanding means „becoming aware of the unspoken things in a situation“. Collins dictionary says: If you say that someone reads the room, you mean that they understand their audience and adapt what they say to suit it. I think, although not on purpose, saying this is massively ableist and making fun of someone for „not reading the room“ is harassment imo. Feel free to give an opposing opinion as well. **Edit: I solved this using the command `gsettings reset org.gnome.Settings last-panel`** And it turns out I have the exact problem of this user: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/2017498 I just didnt know because everything in gnome control center didnt work. After resetting, I deliberately clicked on the mouse settings and it went bad again. Reset again and it works again. **Old Description (out of date, just for reference):** Hi! I'm trying to find out why my display settings are not showing when rightclicking or using `gnome-control-center display`. I have recently disabled a mod I had done to disable pipewire since I couldn't hear anything when using rdp. But probably some of the changed configuration is now breaking parts of my system. Hi folks! I have a sonos system from my pre self hosting days and it’s much too expensive to exchange for something else atm. Since today, I can’t use my music subscriptions anymore and I don’t have any music stored locally. Reason is a giant service outage at sonos. I know, it’s the classic argument for cutting the cord. My question now is, how would you do it? Just pirate music since I have a subscription and am entitled to listen to music? Btw. the issue is with sonos cloud services so the music services are available everywhere but in sonos. If I had a way to stream music from apple or amazon in my homenetwork, sonos should be able to pick it up. Also, what do people do with sonos products? **Edit: As of five minutes ago, I am aware that there is no official ui for the elgato stream deck which is a huge disservice to the users of this expensive piece of hardware. I was under the impression that streamdeck-ui was the official (and very outdated) official version, which is false. Those who bothered to explain this, thank you very much. I have switched to my Linux daily driver this week and after some starting issues, it's working quite well. But a few bits and bobs are quite annoying, such as streamdeck ui. The windows version looks and feels like a spaceship compared to the barebones version I have on ubuntu 23.04 Here's what the windows version looks like.  Additionally, the windows version has plugins and stuff that pretty much make giant scripts that can do pretty much anything and everything. The Linux version doesn't even have it's own pictures that come with it. If you're curious I just used apt install streamdeck-ui instead of the complex stuff that is on the web (and doesn't work anymore because outdated). Am I just using a **really** outdated version or is the linux version just trash? TL;DR: Linux version of streamdeck ui looks 20 yrs old while the windows version looks like photoshop. Hi folks! I got my daily driver to work (which wasn't as hard as I thought) but linphone (VoIP solution) gives me a little bit of headache. When I try clicking on a phone number in firefox (tel:) it asks for the app, I provided the linphone path but it doesn't do anything. Now, I went digging. Turns out they have a gitlab instance with my exact issue unsolved for 2 yrs (but they're still active). I tried logging in with my gitlab credentials but it doesn't work. is that because it's self hosted? How should someone provide issues or other feedback if nobody can log in? Will make another thread for that. # The System Processor 10920x, 32GB Ram, 3060ti, zoom u-22 DAC, Stream Deck, Logitech camera # The OS Ubuntu 23.04 upgraded from 22.10 (yesterday) # TL;DR I reactivated pulseaudio, disabling pipewire, now trying to revert without having to reinstall from scratch. # The Situation I am currently working on my first linux daily driver. Hardware arrived yesterday. The pc has been in use for couple months but not as daily since the gpu was only a stand in. It was running quite a rough config, ubuntu 22.10 with a pulse audio mod (disabled pipewire so I could hear sound when RDPing in). I now reverted those changes with a guide (because my microphone would not be picked up by audacity) but it promptly destroyed my Desktop gui. I reinstalled ubuntu-desktop and the gui works again now. Update: I installed CS:GO and it runs insanely smooth. Metro didnt start at all. I now have cycled through many compatibility options and tried proton experimental, latest and now linux runtime. Now it works on solid 60 fps! Hi folks! I made it! I built a daily driver with Linux! But I'm running into the first walls, which was expected but is still annoying. So I bought a 3060ti which I got for a reasonable price and tried playing metro last light redux. Sub 10 fps. I'm pretty baffled atm. Have checked (and for sure, reddit was the first answer) but so far no dice. I changed from open source to proprietary driver, no changes either. Is there a troubleshooting guide or something? Can I even guarantee my card runs on full capacity without windows? (sorry, I'm not used to linux desktop). Thanks for reading! Have a good one!

Hi there! I found ubuntu server when I was starting to work in tech fulltime (I had done admin work and dev stuff before but not exclusively). A lot of folks had some linux experience and I learned about VMs at the time. So I spun up a ubuntu server vm to check out linux. It took me a bit to get accustomed to the command line but it worked pretty well. Knowing some programming languages definitely helped to grasp the syntax. I worked with the VM for some time and then started searching for ways to use my knowledge and hone it further. So I grabbed an old server that was in my basement and put ubuntu server on it. This server now sits in my other room and has 8 TB of data on it, movies, tv shows (all backups of course...), my home automation system, dashboards, vaults, cloud data. The data is mirrored and backed up off site. I also then came across it again at work when I took care of some servers we had there. It has been quite a ride so far but also a lot of fun. currently trying to phase out my windows laptop for a ubuntu desktop tower. Wish me luck. :) Thanks for reading. Hello everyone! I'm using a TIG stack (Telegraf, InfluxDB, Grafana) in Docker to monitor my server and I keep running into the same issues. When the Telegraf container gets updated (removed and recreated), the Hostname changes. This leads to Grafana to split the data (best case) or show no data at all (worst case) since it was told to show a specific field which is named after the host. Now, I have tried regexing the column (example: /uptime_format/ in flux) but I'm a noob at both regex and flux so that doesn't work either. I think I might need to set the hostname in the telegraf container but I thought I'd ask if anyone else solved this problem before. :) Thank you for reading.

I recently had a discussion about ACs and how they heat up cities. Then I found an article about theoretical increase of efficiency of acs by using the heat pulled from a room to run a thermoelectric device and getting some of the energy back that was used in the ac. I‘ve had this downstream thought many times already: since hot air is basically just energy stored. Could we theoretically pull (all?) the energy from the air (depending on desired temp) to cool it and casually fuel our society’s energy needs?

Maybe I‘ll mod my ps3 to make it emulate games. I heard that works pretty good. I obviously would like to get tons of old games and since they’re not sold anywhere for a fair price, I deem it morally sound to *find* them. I heard of „handheld retro gaming consoles“ which also have *found* games on them. Does anyone have experience with those? Btw: Since the graphics are pretty low res, that could be a better alternative than the ps3 since the 55“ tv its hooked up to might make it look worse. It’s just an idea at this point so I‘m happy for any direction. I figured c/retrogaming might be wrong since talking about finding unlicensed games might be against their rules. Feel free to advise me otherwise. P.S.: Forgive the ignorance. I know my way around commandline and some medium advanced programming but I‘m not pro at sailing the high seas at all.

I recently activated „unattended upgrades“ so that I might not have to update my system every 2-3 days by hand. But nothing has really changed. From the logs I see that unattended upgrades does updates regularly but it never does all of them. So I still have updated pending every couple days. I know, there are updates that can break your stuff but that can happen anyway. Maybe I‘m just missing a config entry or something. Btw. the same goes for autoreastart if needed. That I should activate as well. Does anyone have experience with it?

Hi folks! **System** I‘m running ubuntu 22.04.2 on an old terra miniserver g2 with a xeon 4 core without mt, 16 gb ram and a redneck engineered usb-stick/ssd/hdd config which was supposed to be temporary. I have a 3-2-1 Backup solution though. **What happened** Today I opened my grafana panel and found it not working. Portainer told me that my influxdb container is down. So I ssh‘d in and the system told me it needed a restart. So I ran an update (including docker) and restarted. Nothing worked. Turns out, my dns (pihole) was offline. I found that docker was down completely. Grep syslog told me that docker couldn’t start since the docker config was defective. **An old mistake coming to haunt me** Turns out I had made a „weird“ docker config, using the /erc/docker/daemon.json. Instead of { „asset“:“value“, „asset“:“value“} I had done {„asset“:“value“}{„asset“:“value“}. This led to the error but didn’t bother me for over a year and worked well. Something in this new update must have enforced the syntax or soenthing. **TL;DR** I made a janky docker daemon.json conf and got fucked by the update today. If your docker stops working, check the logs/daemon.json

**TL;DR: I want to pull emails from 5 accounts on to my homeserver to anti spam them and have my clients pull from there** I currently have like 5 major email accounts on different providers which I use for 100s of accounts on many platforms. Some of these accounts are very old and come with the added bonus of no spam filter on the free tier. Now, if you use outlook, you can define anti spam rules there, I know. But since I‘m using many different devices and different mail clients, I can’t be bothered to make anti spam rules for all of them. So I thought it should be doable to pull all the emails from all my accounts and have them go through anti spam on my home server. Sidenote: I have anti spam on some email providers but I can’t redirect the one address to there as to use that accounts anti spam. One solution would be to just get rid of this one account but I‘m a little anxious about the consequences since it is my oldest account with unthinkable amounts of accounts linked to it. Does anyone have a similar scenario or an idea for a solution?

I think it would be cool to have a couple „rogue“ lawyers band together and start making class action law suits against corporations and states for using/enabling anti consumer/anti competitive practices. I have never been asked to participate in such lawsuits so I assume its not being optimally presented online so far. Feel free to correct my impression here. TL;DR: I think we need more ways to fight against anti consumer/privacy stuff in courts all over the world.

Hi there! I‘m running a somewhat developed home server setup and add more services every month. But this thing eludes me: I have 2 IP cameras for my pet room (I have a couple bearded dragons in terrariums). The cameras are fenton 351.150 I can stream many different formats to home assistant or the browser. I also tried multiple apps like viseron (which is pretty cool) and agentdvr from ispy (which always makes the hair on my neck stand up since it looks like it was cobbled together). But what doesnt work is controlling the camera, mostly. I believe agentdvr could do that but I‘m really unhappy about that app. Also, it pushes monetization very hard albeit seeming to be open source. Hi there, I'm running ubuntu server on my *Wortmann Terra G2 with (now upgraded) 16G DDR3 Ram, Xeon E3 1220v3 4 Core, with now 6 Drives (2x8 TB HDD Raid1, 2x 1 TB HDD Raid 1, 2x 250 GB SSD - soon raid 1)* While I generaly know my way around ubuntu, the sensors lm is giving me a hard time. The G2 runs on an *Asus P9D-i itx Motherboard with kvm module* which I have not touched yet. I bought a fancy noctua 120mm casefan since my harddrives run too hot in the case (which is tiny, google wortmann G2). The new fan runs well but I cant detect the fans for either the cpu or the case. I tried sensors detect and installed fancontrol, just to find out **the fans are somehow not discoverable**. Any ideas how to proceed? I'd really like to give the casefan a specific speed to run at. Pretty sure I could gain knowledge in the bios but i really dont want to bring a monitor to the server just for that. **TL;DR: my ASUS P9D-i board wont show me fanspeeds with sensors-detect. I just want to point out that I‘ve had this bug twice so far and others (maybe many) will have it too which severely hinders the growth of lemmy at this critical time. This would mean the following things in excalating order: - Make a bot crosspost every new post on the sub - Copy seed content (like 50 or 100 posts?) - Copy the entire sub history I have read that this can strain an instance (at least the last one I suppose) and I would like to know if it is ok to do so and if I need any help from someone with high permissions.
