And some people get “bored” in life smh
And by *should have* I mean "should have" because this kind of thing can be subjective. I'll start. Senior year of high school I would often skip class to go to the park and smoke weed with my partner (at the time). This park had **a lot** of birds. The sometimes silly, sometimes strategic, sometimes social and cooperative behavior of the birds blew my 17 year old stoned mind. I remember my partner and I would theorize about what they were doing and thinking. I thought it was super cool. I still think birds are super cool. Now, many years later, I have a PhD in a behavior adjacent field. I don't study birds specifically or anything like that, but those experiences and curiosities pushed me in this direction. Maybe it was all inevitable: these are deep interests that would have been pulled out of me in one way or another. The tinder was inside of me and if it wasn't getting stoned at the park as a teenager and watching birds that sparked the flame, something else would have. Who knows.

It’s funny to think of life as a board game or a role playing game being played on the “astral plane” or whatever by our “higher selves.” Car problems etc are just really unfortunate dice rolls.

I did encounter a very sour group on a certain subreddit somewhat recently haha. But then just yesterday I was searching something online, found a relevant Reddit post through Google, and found a comment thread where two people were tearing each other apart for no reason other than a slight disagreement. It wasn’t a “hmm, I don’t think so.” It was a long chain where the further you went, the darker, meaner, and snarkier it got. Wish I remembered it right now. That’s what got me thinking and making the meme. But yeah, maybe my own experience planted the initial seed.

The law of conservation of fucks: a fuck given means a fuck taken since fucks cannot be created nor destroyed. Basic fuck physics.
Hammocks4All 1 week ago • 100%
Yeah, I guess that's the point: if you see a pattern of giving a fuck about something minor, it can become easier to work on not giving a fuck about it. Sometimes not giving a fuck can take fucks.

That's wild. But theoretically they could make two separate mono tracks, right? For example, a left mono track with 75% of what would have been an isolated left channel + 25% of the right channel and, similarly, a right mono track with 25% of what would have been an isolated left + 75% of the right. Then, sure, pan switch it fully to left and right.

It makes sense. I bet it's super hard, especially at first.
It's largely a headphone problem, at least for me. I can't listen to a song where certain tracks are completely isolated to one ear. The audio doesn't need to be mixed perfectly, but I need at least a little bit of each sound in each ear. Otherwise it's too distracting. My brain hates it.

Is it difficult if it’s also inevitable? In a social setting, a child will either learn a language or develop one — two wild children would develop a rudimentary language that would evolve in complexity as it’s passed down generation by generation. I wonder if a feral child, who matured alone and without social interaction, could learn a language later in life. Or, if it could, how difficult it would be.
What do you mean by the critical period in learning being a byproduct of learning over time as opposed to a special feature of the brain’s age? I don’t think I grasp it. Are you saying that it’s not really the brain’s age, but rather that it hasn’t learned a lot yet? Which are distinct but highly correlated.

Are you saying you perform zero mental calculus to determine these sorts of things? You do not consider laws, social norms, or even morals? Where do you draw the line? If there is a literal community fruit tree at a park near your house, would you take all the fruits until people ask you to leave some for them? If you are driving home and you see a house with a beautiful garden, would you stop and steal some of the plants because the resident should tell you not to? Would you practice your guitar at 3am with an amp because, who knows, maybe your neighbors actually enjoy it or maybe they sleep with earplugs and since you had a great musical idea at 3am, you should "be bold" and "take what's yours" and they should tell you 3am is a stupid time to play guitar with an amp?
Did you also say you live in a homogeneous community of somewhat assholes and you think you're being bold by also being an asshole?

It’s pretty interesting to think about how our embodied experience changes inside a vehicle. We move faster but are more limited in other ways. All of language is traded for a horn — no more complex grammar and vocabulary, just “beep beep.”
It would be interesting to see brain studies and brain scans that show whether our brain is in fact working in a more primitive level when inside a vehicle, reflected by the restricted use of language.
On the other hand, I wonder how brain activity would look for a pilot navigating an extremely complex vehicle using a complex dashboard.

I invested in my sleep this year. Bought a white noise machine, comfy percal cotton sheets, ear plugs, eye mask, mouth tape, try to go running consistently, implemented basic sleep hygiene stuff like no phone in the room, and… I still have trouble. I went on a 50km bike ride over the weekend and still had trouble. But… the reality is that it has gotten better on average after implementing all of this and fuck it, I’ll take it.
I drink a cup of coffee only once a day. It’s extra strong though. Maybe that has something to do with it. But I really love that one strong ass coffee in the morning.
I know the meme format is kinda wrong. It's also kinda right.

One time I made pasta for myself and a friend (also roommate). The sauce a bit spicy, with herbs, simmered for a while. One of my favorites. We sat down to eat and he said “yum this is so delicious.” Then he got up, walked to the fridge, grabbed the ketchup, and squeezed it all over the pasta and sauce.

Exactly. Our ability to use language, create culture, abstract ideas and concepts and step outside of them are the ingredients that allow us to transcend our evolutionary instincts and urges, and that’s exactly what we should do when building a society and culture.

Brazil has a lot of gun deaths. But it’s worth keeping in mind that lots of the Amazon region is essentially a lawless “Wild West” and that specialized police units are, in fact, in war with enormous trafficking gangs. “Regular people” get shot too, of course, in violent crime incidents. But besides this, many “regular people” don’t own guns and don’t advocate for guns in the same way as in the US. There’s not really a “gun culture” that regular people participate in — it’s not an identity. Certainly not as much as the US.
I think that’s what makes the photo a valid joke and criticism of the US and that it wouldn’t work for other countries like Brazil. It’s not just looking at total gun deaths or other absolute metrics, it’s also taking into account the layers that make guns in the US a cultural symbol. The US is basically the “gun country” of the world because in the US, guns aren’t just a gang or criminal thing, they're a “regular” thing.

The bad feelings turn into three Cronenberg lasagnas: a nihilistic Cronenberg lasagna, an existential Cronenberg lasagna, and an absurdist Cronenberg lasagna. Similar to the ghosts of Christmas in A Christmas Carol, the Cronenberg lasagnas take Rick and Morty on different journeys to teach them how to deal with bad feelings.

It actually doesn't really bother me, especially with memes and random internet content like that. I've seen posts on Reddit that were actual art, where the title of the repost implies the poster created the art and that it's not a repost. It's lame for a few reasons, such as commenters trying to engage with the alleged creator and the OP not replying, then people finding out it's a repost, etc. But, honestly, whatever.

That’s an interesting point.
Upon further reflection, I discovered I don't fully understand the nuances. So I tried to think it through.
I think it goes as follows:
- Nihilism says there is no meaning so any pursuit whatsoever is futile. (Not goal based.)
- Existentialism says there is no universal meaning but it is the individual who creates meaning. So we project our meaning into the world and live in it and therefore live in a meaningful world. We should search for our personal meaning. (Goal based.)
- Absurdism says there is no universal meaning and if there is, we'll never understand it. This doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy transient pseudo-meanings, though. In fact, we SHOULD enjoy them. But we should be aware that they're not eternal and not objective. (Not goal based.)
So, on second thought, I think the meme does a great a job at capturing absurdism. Still, the difference between existentialism and absurdism is subtle.
What do you all think? Is that kinda the idea?
I wonder if Existentialists or Absurdists consider our biological reality and needs when developing the ideas. For instance, we need food, shelter, social acceptance, and so forth. What does this say about "meaning" and pursuits like fashion and style (as it relates to social acceptance?). How does Maslow's hierarchy of needs fit in with these philosophies?
Hammocks4All 2 months ago • 97%
The absurdism depicted isn’t pure absurdism because there’s the presence of style, which is a system of meaning and value. So, as depicted, that’s more existentialism or a healthy and cool blend of absurdism with existentialism.

Don't appreciate (i) your disgusting example and (ii) your attitude. Most of this is obviously amounting to different interpretations of "free will" and even "omnipotence." Ok, if it's free with no limitations, you win, buddy. If it's free will in the sense that, well, obviously, there are constraints, but it is precisely those constraints that give rise to different wants, desires, actions, and pursuits, and there is freedom to choose them, then ok, there might be free will. In any case, free will is vague and not precisely defined. Similarly, does omnipotence entail the ability of creating something outside of yourself? If no, then ok, the paradox stands. If not, then the paradox doesn't.
