Any chance you could whip a quick MS paint-style image for me to make a blueprint for?

    Here's a tileable unit

Imagine you needed 4 constructors running a recipe. You place that down. Tomorrow you need 8 constructors, so you just place down the same thing behind the existing one.

Here's an example of what not to do:

Why is this worse? Because you'd have to extend the orange line arbitrarily long before you can take outputs from it, to have space to place more constructors later. If you don't, and just take the outputs right from there, expanding the system would require refactoring your output line or your input line to make space. It's more troublesome.

OMG quadruple post hahahah sorry about that

That's what happened to me before the game released, but they added a lot of quality of life that meant it was easy to expand factories outside of my tumorous growth of manifolds in the hub. Before, I had gotten to Phase 4 and had a small train network going, but I was unfamiliar with a lot of concepts that would've helped me make the systems more scalable.

FWIW I did make a small mistake here. The big monorail loop around the main base runs clockwise. That means that parallel rail lines going in and out of the loop cross over themselves (have to turn left to go in and turn left to go out, as opposed to turning right which wouldn't cross the lines) which is ugly and leads to more trains stopping. But on my first playthrough I had bidirectional lines, strange connections between factories, haphazard crossings instead of organized intersections with proper path signals, etc. because I was just not knowledgeable on the specifics of how rail networks are supposed to look.

It's understandable up to a certain point because most men are gross, we suck and there's constant evidence for that worldview. But I agree that it's excessive to bring that attitude to a thread where someone who is struggling with a social situation is asking for support and has given us next to no reason to think anything untowards has happened.

I'm sorry. I interpreted the OP as being pretty much completely benign, the typical overthinking you do when falling in love as a lonely person. If he does have thoughts that would push him to cross boundaries and make her uncomfortable or unsafe then that is a problem, I just didn't see anything that pointed in that direction.

They consider allegiance to the Democratic Party as the only thing that makes you left wing, and allegiance to the Republican Party as the only thing that makes you right wing. The symbol loses all meaning, then becomes significant by itself, and the thing it originally represented is now distorted to fit the new significance of the symbol.

You'll find steel beams are a lot easier to scale up than reinforced iron plates.

Now that you have steel, make sure to get mercer spheres and research the Dimensional Depot in the M.A.M. It will allow you to have your factories upload materials to the cloud, then you can automatically retrieve from there to build wherever you wish, no need to make trips to restock building materials.

Also, always be mindful of adaptability. Leave enough space between your production lines to be able to expand them later. Build your manifolds in a way that makes them easy to scale up (usually this means building manifolds with inputs going in one direction and outputs going in the opposite direction, which allows for more production to be tacked on in the back). This is mostly relevant if you're building everything in close proximity, so for example set up your smelters such that the iron ore goes left to right, iron ingot comes back right to left; this way you upgrade your miners to mk2 and can just upgrade your belt lines, add more smelters to the right of the existing ones, and have more output to use for new production lines.

The layout of the factories you build in this period of transition from early to mid game is the most important part of the game. If you use these tricks, the midgame will be trivial and you'll be at phase 4 in no time. Once you're there it doesn't matter because you rebuild everything anyway and probably want to use trains to handle the massive load of items you have to transport.

It's weird that boomers tend to strawman us as responding to criticisms of AES with "that's not true socialism." Maybe socdems who think Norway is socialist but Cuba isn't would say that, but anyone who's reading Marx and is actively participating in discussions about socialism above a high school level probably understands that real socialism has been tried and has succeeded.

Which brings me to my next point: Socialism's biggest success story is China. It defies every trope yet it looks like most Western leftists are too afraid to claim it as the success it is, evidence that without sanctions, coups, and blockades socialism is a system that can take us to the future capitalism is currently killing. For every rags to riches story in America, there are thousands of people who received dignity, employment, and an economy that worked in their favor thanks to Chinese socialism. It's the best example of what socialism can achieve without being sabotaged, a country that went from a feudal backwater with tyrannical landlords, where the local warlords could claim the peasants' daughters as their property, where famines would routinely come and kill several million people, to the largest and most advanced economy in the world in less than a century. And they accomplished this by taking on Western capital and beating them at their own game.

    hesitation-1

"When Obama was elected, that was a very important victory,” Davis said when asked about the advance of Black political figures in the U.S. “It was not a victory in relation to what he actually accomplished during his presidency, but rather what was significant was that young people organized and accomplished something that was considered to be impossible."

To what end? To continue the brutalization of Africa, South America, the Pacific, etc. under the new shining sun of a Black president?

“When we engage in electoral politics, it can’t be just because a particular individual is running for office,” Davis told the crowd, “it is to enlarge the terrain of mass struggle, to guarantee a space for the trade union movement to win victories, for the women’s movement to win victories, for people of color to win victories, for working and poor people to win victories."

Funny she should say that Kamala L3Harris would enlarge the terrain of mass struggle. Maybe starting WW3 and helping Israel annex Lebanon and Syria are enlarging the terrain of mass struggle? Lenin told us to turn the imperialist conflict into class conflict, and Davis is being incredibly myopic not to see how the imperialist rhetoric here does the opposite, distracting the American masses from their exploitation by aligning them against America's geopolitical enemies, the workers of exploited periphery nations.

It's shameful that someone so respected is missing the forest for the trees so hard. Kill your heroes.

It is used to "create jobs" (open up new spaces to exploit labor), though. They're constantly investing the capital to make more money later, that's what capitalists do. The trick is they do that indirectly by exporting capital to the periphery, where the capital is realized into means of production and more extraction of resources.

I watched I Saw the Devil (2010) and really didn't like it.

    ::: spoiler Rant/review

It's a shame because it was a very polished movie, clearly made with a lot of skill. But it also went so incredibly far with torture porn scenes without using them for any good reason. The dark tone from those scenes in the first act is nullified by the time we enter the second act with the goofy fight scenes. Soo-Hyeon is an unserious character whose arc doesn't feel justified: he's a tragic hero who becomes a monster with his ceaseless quest for revenge, except he never harms an innocent person in the whole movie, and the main thing that communicates his downward spiral is his escalating violence against Jang. But how are we supposed to feel like the violence is ramping up when we already started all the way at the extreme?

Speaking of Jang, kind of a garbage villain, right? I think the movie was going for an interesting concept: a villain who isn't really all that smart, motivated, or strong. He's not a Lee Woo Jin or an Anton Chigurh, not a mastermind or a force of nature. He's just plain evil. And that's cool! But the movie fails to actually deliver on making that evil convincing. They just show him being very cruel to his victims, but there's no smart usage of visual cues or anything like that until the shot in the third act where he looms in the closet with his face half lit and the other half submerged in pitch blackness. If there had been more similar shots sprinkled in the scenes where he was torturing and killing, he wouldn't have felt like such a flat character.

Overall, the movie felt like it only cared to use maximalist horror to shock the audience and then excite them with action scenes, never trying to deliver anything deeper than "revenge doesn't make you happier" and failing to make itself congruent with even that simple theme. IMO it's totally cool to try to cross the line and make very transgressive movies but you gotta make good on the promise of being transgressive, you shouldn't waste the opportunity to tell an extraordinary story like that.

I don't think it would help much, let's look at CNN's coverage of the pager attack to see what I mean.

So, starting off with the headline, the article is already biased in a way that an LLM couldn't detect: the headline claims the attack was targeting Hezbollah, which is already contradictory with the facts shown immediately below, and contextual information from the real world. As humans, we can think about what it means for pagers to be rigged with explosives and detonated simultaneously at scale. We can understand that there's no way to do that while "targeting" any specific group, because you can't control where rigged consumer goods go. But an LLM would never know that, because an LLM doesn't reason about the world and doesn't actually know what the words it reads and writes represents. The best an LLM could do is notice something wrong between the headline saying the attack targeted Hezbollah and then the body showing that most injured people were civilians. But how could an LLM ever know that, even trained on better data? The article has this statement,

NNA reported that “hacked” pager devices exploded in the towns of Ali Al-Nahri and Riyaq in the central Beqaa valley, resulting in a significant number of injuries. The locations are Hezbollah strongholds.

that an AI would just have to know to mistrust to still identify the problem. As far as the AI knows, when the article says those towns are Hezbollah strongholds, that could literally mean those towns are... Hezbollah strongholds, in the literal military sense, rather than just places where they have strong presences. How would an LLM know any better?

Similar argument can be made about the information the article gives about the context more broadly. It mentions the tit for tat battles since Oct 7 but has no mention of Israel's history of aggression against Lebanon. Could an LLM identify that omission as a source of bias? It'd need to be very sure of its own understanding of history to do so, and if you've ever tried to have an LLM fact check something for you, you'd already know they're not designed to hold a consistent grip on reality, so we can reasonably say that LLMs are not the right tools to identify omission as a source of bias. Much less fabrication, because to identify that something is a lie you'd need a way to find a contradicting source and verify the contradicting source, which an LLM can never do.

Those might be comparable in the sense that if someone called me a terrorist, I'd sooner try to challenge the assumptions that led them to make the claim than the claim itself because I understand why they'd call me a terrorist (or an antisemite) but I believe those reasons are frivolous and easily dismissed. But I'd be much more careful trying to lean into being called an antisemite, when called a terrorist I might say "and I'd fly those planes into the towers again" but I would never say something similar when called an antisemite.

I don't think that's the problem. The problem is that an AI can't know truth from falsehood, or when things are being omitted, overtly emphasized, etc. The only thing it can actually evaluate is tone, and the factual, objective affect that all news reporting tends to use is gonna read as unbiased. It'd only register as biased if they started throwing out insults, used lots of positive or negative adjectives, or other kinds of semantically evident bias. You'd basically need an AGI to actually evaluate how biased an article is. Not to mention that attempting to quantify that bias assumes that there even is a ground truth to compare against, which might be true for the natural sciences but is almost always false for social reality.

Honestly, it's not even an unreasonable conclusion to reach when politics is presented as it is in US electoral politics. There is such a small substantial difference between the parties that you can take any infinitesimal part of that difference and extrapolate it to mean ridiculous things like OOP did. Not only that, but take away knowledge of history and materialism, and you wouldn't distinguish between Republicans' opportunistic appeals to populism and anti-war rhetoric, versus their actual praxis of warmongering.

The good news is that it makes our job as socialists pretty easy when we can show those people that the symbols, cultural markers, and ideas they are being imposed are distinct from the political positions of bourgeois politicians who choose to associate with those superficialities. It's hard to get people to make that break, because the positive alternative doesn't actually exist yet.

Is there any universe where an American populist movement isn't just disastrous for the periphery?

Assuming that its accomplishments include moving manufacturing back into the US and securing the border, what good could come of a populist movement? The interests of the American labor aristocracy would just be consolidated with Imperialism to an even greater extent, and any conflict against China would see no resistance from organized labor because of the incestuous relation of the MIC and organized labor. Any anti-war movement would have no power at all, there would be no positive argument for stopping the conflict when it keeps everyone employed as contrast to the current state of unemployment and precarious work. Potential benefits include the cessation of the export of capital, less capacity for the US to project power across the world, and less state repression of anti-imperialist movements. But I can't help but think that if the US pulled its production out of Asia, South America, Africa, and the Pacific, it would redo Gladio/Bloodstone to prop up fascists to hold down anti-imperialist movements, or create a dozen Israels to keep a way to quickly kill nascent revolutions. Am I wrong?

What does the Imperialist class get from systematically killing immigrants?

Or: Shouldn't immigration be good for capital? I know they'd prefer for migrants to stay somewhere where their labor time is cheaper to make better use of unequal exchange, but how is it better to spend so many resources on turning away refugees and immigrants that are desperate to work for cheap, than to simply let them get exploited? What are the forces at play that make capitalists invest in border security so much? Is it simply to keep an implicit threat on the existing undocumented immigrant population to make them more precarious and more exploitable?

People's masking habits make me doom hard.

Maybe I'm biased because the only event I go to is mostly attended by the elderly, but I swear I go months at a time without ever seeing anyone else using at least an N95 mask. Maybe 5 or 6 people out of 100 wearing cloth masks. About 15% of the population has their vaccines up to date where I am. How the hell is any kind of organizing or solidarity supposed to happen when people can't be bothered to put a piece of fabric on their face? It really feels like nihilism and cynicism completely envelop the population that the literal smallest act of social good is too much to ask for. I miss when anti mask conspiracy theories where fringe instead of being the hegemonic narrative. This kind of thing makes me think that the only way for socialism to win in the west is to promise people their personal lives will be better and they'll have more treats, but we obviously can't beat imperialism as the treat fiends' choice.

Factory gamers, which kind of input/output system is better: belts that go right into buildings, or inserters/arms?

Disambiguation: Belts going straight into buildings a la Satisfactory, Create in modded MC, or Mindustry. Buildings usually have slots that allow you to plug a belt into them. Inserters/mechanical arms that take items off a belt and insert them into buildings like Factorio, or Dyson Sphere Program My own thoughts: Inserters and mechanical arms are generally a cleaner system since setting up assembly lines you just have belts running parallel to machines. The case for belts that directly go into/out of buildings is that it makes the math for throughout a lot simpler because there is only 1 rate in the distribution to worry about. Games where inserters have stacking, different speeds, variable throughput depending on destination, etc... have annoyed me a fair amount so I like the straightforwardness of having a belt that carries 120 items/min no matter what. A pretty important thing to note is that 2d factory games are gonna struggle with a direct belt access mechanic since it means belts have to go through each other a lot, diagram below ```py [12] [12] [12] -/|---/|---/| --/----/----/ ``` The belts in the 2nd line have to cut through the first. In 3D that's not a problem since you can just stack the lines vertically instead, but in 2D you have to use whatever mechanic the game has to go above or below existing lines. I think this is the main reason the inserter mechanic is most common, but some games like Mindustry solved this problem neatly and allow you to easily pass items in multiple directions. Dyson Sphere Program also has direct belt inputs for a few buildings where only 1 input is needed, but DSP allows belts to easily cross over each other in 3D space, it just doesn't allow stacking assemblers vertically like in other 3D games. Another solution for 2D games with direct access belts is to allow for the building itself to act as a kind of junction. Final Factory (an underhyped new release) has this system where you run your belts like this: ```py [1]--[1]--[1] [2]--[2]--[2] ``` And as a building fills up, it starts passing the overflow to the next one. This means as long as you feed the first building in the chain with enough items to stock the whole line, you'll be fine. Then you can take the products out the bottom or sometimes you can fit another line through the crafters to take the output from the assembly line. Also, another thing, some games use neither system because they rely on other systems for transporting items, like units that automatically carry them. I haven't played any games like that outside of modded Minecraft with Thaumcraft golems and Pneumaticraft drones, so feel free to give your thoughts on those (I think Oddsparks works this way? Haven't tried it yet).

Bit idea: Argue with a lib by pretending you're a libertarian, then reveal your power level

You accuse them of being a socialist because they support Biden. Then you run through all the thought terminating cliches: - Human nature - Imagine you have 2 cows - Totalitarianism/authoritarianism - Socialists are just utopian idealists who haven't received their first paycheck/don't know how the real world works - Explain the origin of money using the barter myth - Climate change related thought terminating cliches that could literally fill the character limit 3 times over - Call them a tankie - Say that tankies always claim real communism has never been tried because they keep moving the goalposts - Show them the reddit front page, /r/theleftcantmeme, etc whatever you can to make the brand of lib you're portraying look as uncool as possible Then you show them your power level. Make them feel as frustrated as we feel when we speak with their cracker treatbrains. At the very least, from then on if you talk with that person ever again they'll have to think twice before they say some stupid thing you could easily dismiss as sounding like the character you cooked up. Also, I guess this is just the standard-issue wrecker strategy that some trolls use against us here, ended up recreating that unintentionally ![trump-moist](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/aea7054b-90cc-4d1a-8a47-d6f3c87f23a6.png "emoji trump-moist")

Throwback to this insane Bill Gates moment streamable.com

Several mind boggling lines here, my personal favorite is him trying to say he was using Epstein to get to some global health professionals because Epstein was well connected. My brother in Christ, you're Bill Gates, who's gonna say "No, sorry, I can't talk to Mr. Gates at the moment. Oh, Epstein gave his word? Clear my schedule!"

What's the biggest turn for the better that any current or historical political figure has made?

Who are some people that started out as ghouls and made a turn for the better? Bonus points if it came suddenly and from their own realization. I thought about this for a while and the ones I could come up with aren't really that good. - Emperor Puyi. - Jeffrey Sachs went from doing shock therapy to Russia to defending their right to defend against NATO expansionism on a lib news show, but that's been his only good moment to my knowledge. - Jimmy Carter but he never changed course when he needed to, not much he can do to undo the harm he did as president. - Patty Hearst but she really wasn't doing anything bad, just came from a wealthy and powerful family much like Puyi. - Pat Tillman was deployed when he had a change of heart and contacted a bunch of reporters, sadly he was killed by another troop before he got to make much of a difference. - Peter Daou but he's largely irrelevant - That natsec ghoul that wrote the article about quitting her job because she doesn't want to be complicit in genocide. - Whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning? I don't know off the top of my head how involved she ever was with the war on terror, but she was a troop. - Malala and Greta were never ghouls, but did grow from lib media darlings to ![qin-shi-huangdi-fireball](https://hexbear.net/pictrs/image/5ebd83c0-b9a9-418e-aea1-bdcf05f0fb09.png "emoji qin-shi-huangdi-fireball") over time so honorable mention to both of them. I guess the most obvious example that does satisfy my criteria is Kissinger, who really popped off when he died. edit: You do not, in fact, have to hand it to Puyi before he was re-educated.

Character idea: Catholic Maoist who goes to confession and does self crit with the priest

He rants to the priest about his failure to practice the revolutionary struggle and using his fascist Visa card to order pizza. But the priest is just an average conservative Catholic so he's just like ![jesse-wtf](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/f4eec943-179c-4416-a166-ed40dd07701d.png "emoji jesse-wtf")

Final Factory Early Access Launch Trailer youtu.be

This game is pretty cool, the [demo is free on Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1383150/Final_Factory/) and it's a good afternoon of content. Lots of interesting ideas that I haven't seen before in factory games. If you like Factorio, Dyson Sphere Program, or Satisfactory, I'd recommend you check it out! I'm a playtester and have played with some of the features that are coming in the early access launch, they're very cool and it looks like the devs are pretty active.

What's a good way to send binary (audio/mpeg) data alongside some numerical data?

I'm building a system where I'll have some embedded devices sending audio data to my server via HTTP, along with a small amount of numerical data. It's important that before these are sent to the database, they're bundled together. Another point, the client needs to authenticate to upload data. The naive solution would be to send everything together as a JSON object and just base 64 encode the audio, with a single backend endpoint for receiving both the audio and the other data. My concern is, base64 adds a pretty significant amount of overhead (4 bytes of base64 for every 3 bytes of audio) and that is a problem for me, it's more power usage and it's a medium amount of data, a 33% tax is non-trivial. Network encoding might reduce that problem, but I can't be entirely sure until I test. The other solution would be setting up a different endpoint for audio that can receive the binary data directly, maybe through a stream. This probably is the most efficient way to go about it, but it introduces some complexity as to how I'm supposed to match up the audio with the other data. I'm not very familiar with backend engineering so I'm not sure if there's a straightforward solution that is just an unknown unknown for me. Maybe I can hash the audio data in the client, include it in the header for both requests, then keep a record of incoming requests along with their hashes in a dictionary in the server (push them as they're received) so they can efficiently be matched up with each other? ![three-heads-thinking](https://hexbear.net/pictrs/image/15281eb0-5ffc-465a-8459-169a156c578f.png "emoji three-heads-thinking") Feels like a cool solution, but IDK, thoughts? Should I just eat the 33% overhead from the simple solution and accept that premature optimization is the root of all evil?

Self crit about useless struggle session (offsite) (CW: mention of suicide, genocide)

I was dunking on a recruiter from a PMC earlier, he shared a promo for a ghoul activity and I posted an article about the Israeli strike on a Doctors Without Borders hospital today in response. It's in a big group chat with some people I know but mostly strangers. A guy I know (who is otherwise cool and has good politics) made a pretty tasteless joke, and another dude who I don't know told him 'kys.' Now, this stranger is someone who has the right intentions and he'd previously commented in support of Palestine and whatnot, so I'm honestly more on his side than my own friend's. However, I really wanted to stop a friendly fire struggle session from starting because I think it's most important to call out the actual ghouls, not leftists who make bad jokes or use off color humor. I stepped in and said I agreed that it was definitely not the right time and we have no right, as privileged westerners, to make jokes about genocide as if it's "gallows humor" when we aren't even the ones on the gallows. But I still called the stranger out on going on the offensive on the wrong person. It kinda just aggravated the dude further and it feels like I did something really counterproductive. On the other hand, I did feel frustrated when this dude could easily have jumped on the recruiter guy with that energy instead of an irrelevant bystander. Doesn't help that it attracted attention from some redditoids who started taunting the guy and getting more reactions out of him. Feel like maybe I was biased and shouldn't have defended my friend when his joke made light of an active genocide and made someone uncomfortable. For the record, he just made a bad pun about Doctors without Borders, he didn't say anything reactionary. Still wildly uncalled for. ![niko-concern](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/7a93be8a-5d77-464c-91f0-86a632df70e2.png "emoji niko-concern") Maybe I'm overthinking.

What movies give you butterflies in your stomach?

I get a lot from Mulholland Drive, especially when the betrayal starts happening in the third act. I also got the feeling watching Past Lives and Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The news should refer to the FBI as "those guys that killed MLK and smuggled crack into the hood"

Those guys that killed MLK and smuggled crack into the hood warn about Chinese cyber crime. Those guys that killed MLK and smuggled crack into the hood report rise in black-on-white crime. Those guys that killed MLK and smuggled crack into the hood deny killing MLK and smuggling crack into the hood.

How do we feel about static vs dynamic typing?

And how would you describe your political tendencies? I have a theory that more MLs are gonna be into static typing and more anarchists are gonna be into dynamic typing.
