I think what stands out to me is the growing use of legislative power to stop strikes and remove negotiating power from unions. The most recent major example being the then pending rail strike back in 2022.

Sure Trump will be 10x worse, but the Dems really haven't done enough to address the health and safety of these people, and to protect them from growing corporate exploitation.

Just to be clear, this is a matter of workplace policy, so relating to the law, but not of the law. But yes, it would be prudent to know the policies of your workplace, and doubly so if you're a goddamned judge.

This isn't quite as black and white as you make it out to be. Severity is an issue here. If you apply the same concept to human life, a similar argument would quickly fall apart. (Oh it was just one human life, so it's OK, you don't kill anyone 99.9999% of the time.)

I personally think that whom you kill and for what reason matters greatly. If you accidentally step on a bug, that's not the same as intentionally killing a rodent, which is not the same as intentionally torturing monkey. Just how killing in humans, intent and state of mind matters, so it does with animals.

Honestly, bivalves were the last thing I gave up before becoming fully vegan, even after dairy and eggs, mainly, as you've pointed out, due to their very simple CNS. I found the "we don't know yet, and it's better to be safe" argument, as well as the fear of being purity checked by other vegans, convincing enough to stop eating them. Being vegan already makes you a bit of a social pariah, so I don't need the trouble from both sides.

However, I personally believe that sentience and consciousness exist on a spectrum which is also roughly correlated to CNS complexity. That spectrum dictates how much a living thing is capable of suffering, and hence how much moral consideration they should be afforded.

Not the person you're arguing with, but just to be clear, in the US, life sentences are either determinate or indeterminate. The former are for the remainder of natural life. The latter typically have a fixed part (25/30 years, in this case) after which parole is possible for early release, but can extend up to the remainder of natural life.

So when we say "multiple life sentences" it doesn't mean sentencing for the duration of a multiple of their remaining natural life, it means that there are multiple sentences that have the possibility of life imprisonment.

Edit: I see what you're saying. In this case, these were both fixed sentences, not indeterminate life sentences.

Yeah, we need to be asking what the purpose of trying the child in question as an adult here is:

Rehabilitation - I think the juvenile system would probably be better suited for this purpose, so no.

Deterrence - I don't think the knowledge that they might be tried as an adult has much bearing on their decision to commit the crime. I'd be willing to wager that people who do this sort of thing don't much care what the consequences are. They've given up on themselves and their own lives.

Removal - This strikes me as the main motivator. If the system has no way to rehabilitate, and recidivism is likely, then what other option is there?

Retribution - As much as the US loves its retribution, usually it's less keen to enact it on children. I'm sure some people would be happy about this aspect though.

Ultimately, veganism relies on personal decisions of morality. It's not fully prescriptive and leaves room for differing opinions. The question here is whether or not the relationship is exploitative.

This leaves some room for nuance. There's a difference between purchasing a pet from a breeder, which adds further demand, and adopting an animal that would otherwise be euthanized, for example.
