I remember that most Disney games always have been quality. If not by gameplay at least by graphics/animation. Haven't played this specific game myself, but it looks amazingly animated!

Everything was under delivered since the early 90s by Peter. I think het just gets off from the attention. Considering most of the projects were a financial success nonetheless, he probably saw this as a reason to keep doing it.
This really bit him in the end though with godus. A failed god game where he went to kickstarter for money. I guess releasing an under promised game when you ask for money before making it, promising all sorts of things and never delivering it is not really good PR.

Interestingly, in the Netherlands there was the "Zuiderzee" . After damming off the sea, connecting the northern parts of the country for work traffic the sea became a lake called the "IJsselmeer" which in turn turned to freshwater, and even froze over during a cold winter, As seen here and traffic actually crossed over the ice in the lake itself.

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/18053381 > Happy 25th anniversary to System Shock 2 (I'm actually a day late, oops!). One of the original Immersive Sims, and precursor to the BioShock series. This has much more RPG elements than BioShock does, and an inventory grid. > > -------------- > > # [Wikipeda Synopsis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Shock_2) > > System Shock 2 is a 1999 action role-playing survival horror video game designed by Ken Levine and co-developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios. Originally intended to be a standalone title, its story was changed during production into a sequel to the 1994 game System Shock. The alterations were made when Electronic Arts—who owned the System Shock franchise rights—signed on as publisher. > > The game takes place on board a starship in a cyberpunk depiction of 2114. The player assumes the role of a soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of first-person combat and exploration. It incorporates role-playing elements, in which the player can develop skills and traits, such as hacking and psionic abilities. > > System Shock 2 was originally released in August 1999 for Microsoft Windows. The game received critical acclaim but failed to meet commercial sales expectations. Many critics later determined that the game was highly influential in subsequent game design, particularly on first-person shooters, and considered it far ahead of its time. It has been included in several "greatest games of all time" lists. In 2007, Irrational Games released a spiritual successor to the System Shock series, titled BioShock, to critical acclaim and strong sales. > > System Shock 2 had been in intellectual property limbo following the closure of Looking Glass Studios. Nightdive Studios were able to secure the rights to the game and the System Shock franchise in 2013 to release an updated version of System Shock 2 for modern operating systems, including for OS X and Linux, and announced plans to release an Enhanced Edition of the game. OtherSide Entertainment announced in 2015 that they had acquired the rights from Nightdive Studios to produce a sequel, System Shock 3, but as of 2020 the rights have since been transferred to Tencent. > > ----------------- > > # Videos > > [MandaloreGaming - System Shock 2 Review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tONyeEcozrw) > > [Finntrovert - System Shock 2 - Retrospective / Review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzAboAc_WKE) > > [Ramsker - System Shock 2 is Still A Masterpiece](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogQlFmBaYm4) > > [Boulder Punch - System Shock 2 Review | An Immersive Sim Classic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiVLrD2Bgqo) > > ---------- > > # Links > > [IGDB Page](https://www.igdb.com/games/system-shock-2) > > ![](https://images.igdb.com/igdb/image/upload/t_720p/gdanfmlxy57gzla4smbb.webp) > > ![](https://images.igdb.com/igdb/image/upload/t_720p/sc5j8p.webp) > > [MobyGames Page](https://www.mobygames.com/game/590/system-shock-2/) > > ![](https://cdn.mobygames.com/screenshots/15827852-system-shock-2-windows-the-hybrid-is-the-most-common-and-recogni.png) > > ![](https://cdn.mobygames.com/screenshots/15828389-system-shock-2-windows-busy-activity-with-hybrids-using-shotguns.png) > > ![](https://cdn.mobygames.com/screenshots/15827861-system-shock-2-windows-dancing-no-sir-this-hybrid-can-throw-gren.png) > > ![](https://cdn.mobygames.com/screenshots/15828224-system-shock-2-windows-the-recreational-area-would-have-been-a-g.png) > > ---------- > > # About !retrostatus@retrolemmy.com > > This community is for big milestone anniversaries of retro games (15 years or older, every multiple of 5 years). It happened. Retrolemmy turns 1 as of today, juli 20th. This year has flown by. But knowing that lemmy only was on 0.18.1 it also feels like such a long time ago. I have learned so much thanks to this site. But still have so, so much to learn. I want to thank everyone here on retrolemmy and lemmy as a whole for being here. For making this my new home online after the reddit exodos. I want to thank spez (fuck you spez), because without him this amazing place on the internet wouldn't be here. I want to thank @Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com for making time to help out here. I want to thank all the mods on the communities. I want to thank my family, for being patient with me when I broke the page again (and again and again) and spent the evening trying to fix it. Most of all, I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for giving this place a shot, and being here. To another year of awesome retro fun! Cheers.
Hello, The server had some stability issues, so I decided it was time to upgrade. The new server has a few more cores, double the memory and a disk upgrade. (the disk upgrade was not needed, but included in the package, and it can't hurt) I assume most stability issues have been fixed now. If you notice anything, feel free to contact me here on lemmy or reply to this thread. Thank you for your patience!

EDIT: It seems to have been fixed thanks to @graycube@lemmy.world. Running `analyze verbose;` in postgres. After updating to 0.19.5 from 0.19.3 my postgres is often using up 500%+ of CPU according to docker stats and often going to 100% CPU on most cores according to htop. Also noticed in the uptime monitor: ![](https://retrolemmy.com/pictrs/image/76597566-0fae-4777-8adb-cf9f3d914d17.jpeg) htop shows one of the 5 postgres processes constantly on UPDATE. I think this might be part of the problem. I'm not comfortable with postgres and am honestly completely in the dark how or where to mitigate or even pinpoint this issue. Any help would be appreciated.
We updated to 0.19.5. This was not as smooth as I had hoped, and due to that the page was offline for almost a day while I had to troubleshoot and figure out what went wrong. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. But as far as I know, we are fully operational. If there are any other problems, please let me know by sending me a private message, or putting it in the comments under here. Thanks for your patience.

cross-posted from: https://retrolemmy.com/post/6261478 Happy 40th anniversary to the first game in the King's Quest series, one of the first graphical adventure games, and where Sierra really made their name. This game also kicked off the [Adventure Game Interpreter (AGI)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_Game_Interpreter) engine, which Sierra used for many games. Wikipedia says: They employed it in 14 of their games between 1984 and 1989, before replacing it with a more sophisticated engine, Sierra's Creative Interpreter. After a user created half a dozen accounts in a span of 24 hours to "battle" a ban on a lemmy.world community, I'm regretting to inform that I have added an application questionnaire to the account creation process. I want this instance to be a inviting and hassle-free home for any enthousiast of the retro kind. And unfortunately this means it's a little less accessible, and might take a bit before your account can be in use. I will get to your application in due time, and will check regularly every day. I hope this will catch trolls and obvious abusers more easily before they become a pain in the ass of the mods of communities. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. If you have any questions or complaints feel free to reply to this post or send me a message.

Also check hashtags for #the7thguestvr, #the11thhour (although there's some noise in there), #the13thdoll, and any other game you want. I'm mostly hanging out here and in Discord, but I'll probably see you if you post to any of the others!

Since then there were numerous improvements: > * It can now run UT99 maps and Unreal Gold botmatch maps (whereas it was limited to only UT before), and boot up onto the intro flyby of Deus Ex. > * Colission handling is much better (but not perfect yet). > * Can utilize SDL2 on Linux for windowing and native Wayland support (previously it'd use pure X11, and actually still does if you don't have SDL2 installed). > * The menus mostly work now. > * Initial works for the AI (they will move around sometimes, and retaliate if attacked). > * Game detection system based on the SHA1 sum of the game executable. This allows us to detect many versions of UT and U1/UGold, as well as Deus Ex, Klingon Honor Guard, NERF Arena Blast, and more! > * A launcher has been added to select the game you want to play on startup. > And lots of other improvements! > > There is still a lot of work to do to implement everything though, and contributions are always welcome!
It took William Gee 20 years of mapping to finish this. Made for eduke32 https://www.moddb.com/mods/wg-mega-pack
6 eggs, goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, walnuts and 2 leeks. Topped off with shredded cheese. Very delicious. Edit: also 2 spoons of crème fraiche

You can download the free megawad, and the first too. Or you can support them and buy it for a mp3 or costum midi soundtrack. It is ~~compatible with the original DooM, but~~ made with gzDooM in mind. I case you didn't know: John Romero is one of the original developers and Co founder of id Software.
Great singer. This song always gets me. So serene, so explosive. It's great.

The 7th Guest was notable for being one of the first cd-rom only games for DOS. It was an atmospheric game with some challenging puzzles. And the obligatory cheesy acting as was usual for FMV games. Recently a VR remake was released, so if you have a VR headset you might want to check it out. They changed up the puzzles so it's not a one on one remake, and that makes it more fresh in my opinion. Though being able to just freely move and look around the Stauf mansion would have been enough for me.
In less than 2 hours I will be live for some metal and rock on the air! I'll be taking over for 2 hours to bring noise to your ear canals! Hope to see you there!
