A single, decent, maintained one for LVM.

Redhat had a couple of goes at this and they suck ass big time and rely on KDE (so no good for any other DE / WM). I'm not sure anything really works, so I'll say: none exist.

Not sure if it's the devs to blame when there's statements like:

Kurtz therefore has the possibly unique and almost-certainly-unwanted distinction of having presided over two major global outage events caused by bad software updates.

So, I'm guessing it's the business that's not supporting good dev->test->release practices.

But, I agree with your point; their overall software quality is terrible.

I would add that a lot of attacks are done after a fix has been released - ie compare the previous release with the patch and bingo - there's the vulnerability.

But agree, patching should happen regularly, just with a few days delay after the supplier release it.

Just to add - if your phone drops off the wifi (mine does and I'm still trying to find out why... maybe due to power saving), then maybe, you could also look at bluetooth tracking (ie something like ESPresence) for HA to know you're still at home.

(Bluetooth can also be setup in the Companion App)

Personally, I'd go with the clean Fedora install on the new drive and copy your data over as someone else mentioned, then expand Windows once you 100% happy with it.

    This is the way.

There's nothing worse than finding your DNS/DHCP has gone down and it's a VM / container running inside a server that can't start because it doesn't have an IP address and you can't resolve names to get the thing started.

Break things down into chunks that make sense - to you.

I have dedicated (low power) hardware for the interweb firewall / DHCP / core network stuff.

I have a NAS for storage with all the backups / reinstall images on (so I can rebuild the firewall if there's no internet, for example)

Then I have everything else in a single server.

Sources: a house fire, water leak & many hardware failures & borked upgrades over many decades.

I agree with this point: age isn't the measure of usefulness, popularity is

Something might be 10yrs old and uaed by many people... and also something 10 months old is no longer used.

Also, just a thought, if it's "old" it's probably a standard too, so probably doesn't actually need much (relative term) effort to maintain...

    Checkout big-launcher:

big-launcher is a work-in-progress HTPC application launcher. The design is loosely based on the Roku UI, consisting of a sidebar menu on the left, and selectable apps on the right. This project is intended to be the successor to my other HTPC project, Flex Launcher. Compared to Flex Launcher, big-launcher will be more graphically advanced, but less customizable. The program will be written in C++ and utilize SDL for graphics.

I just read about it from the Flex Launcher page, so no idea what it's like, just passing it on...

the recent influx of so-called 'immutable' distros springing up like mushrooms is undeniably linked to and inspired by NixOS.

No, you can jusy restore to a second location...it depends on whether everything was backed up, or just a few test files.

I prefer backing up specific folders rather than "everything", so it's easier to test. (I'd just reinstall the OS if that was nuked)

Let's say I want to do a test restore of all my photos. I just rename that folder to simulate that it's been accidentally deleted... then I just do a normal restore - and do a bit-by-bit comparison of the two folders and check it all went well.

Also setup a bootable USB stick with a backup program like clonezilla to do full machine backups.

You'll get the hang of OS vs data backups later, but for now, do a full backup, play around installing / removing stuff and if you break it, you're back in business in no time

I think the main thing is for you to try doing a test restore of your data before you need to (and you already have a local backup anyway if your test goes wrong)

That will give you a better understanding of the whole process - they might be 100% reliable in storing data which is totally unusable by you because you've lost your decryption key, weren't backing it up correctly, etc (for example).

:) you don't have to use containers, but they do simplify the install.

    I don't use containers.

There's also no Setup.exe to download run where you just Next, Next, Finish.

So, instead, I have to install separate packages, configure them, deal with conflicting requirements, etc...

Did I have to learn Docker? No. Did I have to learn something else? Yes.

As someone else mentioned, spending some time learning what / how / why you're doing will help massively later on. Probably why you're getting Docker answers, they're auto-suggesting it to start you off with something simpler...

Yeah... I've been trying out the resizable cards and... well... hopefully the next version will be better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for incremental improvements and that means we need a Step1 somewhere.

I wanted to just change one dashboard, but there's no migration option (yet?) which is fair enough, so I created a new one and tried copying over cards...

I have a couple of Glance cards with a title and I can't really get a single row of icons with title to line up nicely unless I use a 3-row card...

But, it's also nice to slim down a Graph card to just 2 or 3 columns wide if it's a short-duration graph.

I look forward to the next revision.

Just stumbled across this (overly dramatic?) article and thought I'd just post it here... It's more to act as a reminder that if you've got a NAS that is serving content to the interwebs, then make sure it's behind a proxy of some kind to prevent weaknesses (ie in the management Web UI) being exposed. Obvz, this article is pointing to Zyxel, but it could be your DIY home-built NAS with Cockpit: [CVE-2024-2947](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2024-2947) - just an example, not bashing that project at all. Pause alerts during the night

Well, as the title says, I've had a few notifications that alerted over night and I'm wanting to sleep instead These are ntfy alerts, but driven by Uptime Kuma... and I can't find a programmatic / config option that says "don't notify between 11pm and 7am" (but willing to admit I've just not found it... yet...) I need my (Android, ofc) phone to be on in case of family calls / messages, so I can't use "Do Not Disturb", and remembering to manually mute the ntfy app each night just doesn't make sense to me - computers are quite capable of automating my requirements for me. So... any pointers? I'm sure you're not all getting alerts at 2am because your ISP dropped a few packets...

    Sonoff S26 R2 Zigbee

Ok, I've done a fair bit with wifi devices, now I'm waking up to zigbee. Got myself an S26 R2 to play with, but just wanted to clarify a few things... So, if I had a few of these around the house, would they form the man backbone of the zigbee mesh network? Or do they not provide that function? And also - possibly n00b question - I presume there's still a need / benefit to flash with esphome? Couldn't see anything obvious on the site and only searched online for a few mins before giving up and asking for experience rather than random sites...

    Traccar Integration

Has anyone used the [Traccar integration ](https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/traccar/) with a full Traccar server vs the webhook Android client? There's an issue with the latest version of the Traccar client sending more data than HA can understand ([Traccar Integration: extra keys not allowed #84540](https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/84540)) So, I was wondering whether it's worth setting up a full Traccar Server? It seems like total overkill, but maybe it has other benefits?

    PacDiff comparisons

I have a few devices running Arch... Rasperrys, laptops, a NAS, etc After an update I'll run pacdiff to check for any updated configurations to look out for. On the laptops I'll use meld to compare and it's nice to visually pick and choose what to update. But for the headless units, I'm using vimdiff and it's sometimes difficult to see what to change - esp. when a few lines in a block of changes needs picking and choosing. What other approaches are you using for this?
