Perhaps a new community is called for; something which encourages earnest thinking and open discussion but is not hardcore technical philosophy. I think it should be called 'interestingthoughts' or 'thatsinteresting' or maybe even just 'thoughtful'. There is already 'showerthoughts' but that seems to be a bit more humour-based than what you're talking about.
I would enjoy reading and replying to posts on it and posting to it myself too. I haven't started a community on Lemmy before and I've got quite a bit on my plate at the moment, so I don't think I could take it on as a mod alone but if you want we could try doing it together. Let me know what you think :)

I agree that it can look like people are self-promoting and seeking prestige on social media. I find that following hashtags on Mastodon is a good habit for sidestepping this. It shifts the focus to topics rather than identities. The same goes for Pixelfed. I've got a beautiful feed on Pixelfed made up of different types of art and photography that I like.

I sometimes post thoughts/questions and usually get some interesting discussion, so it is worth it. I think I also prefer seeing other posts like this. I think that the reason for seeing more posts which are links is because a) it's easier and b) most online content is somewhere on the clickbait spectrum and the result of that is manifested here on Lemmy much the same as it would be anywhere else.
Edit: Also, I'm upvoting your post because I think you are essentially calling for firsthand thoughtful discussion, which is a good thing for everyone.
I'm a casual space enthusiast, so forgive me if this is ignorant, but is it typical that there is a delay (of several days or more) between hearing news about the success of a given space project and then the photos of it being published? I feel like I've noticed it a few times... And if so, why? Are photos hard/slow to transmit or make?

I had to learn to remember this within the dream and to forcibly wake myself up from it to stop this happening. Which I think is quite an accomplishment, if I may say so myself.
I suspect it goes back to wearing nappies/diapers as a baby. Babies naturally try to wait until they are unclothed to relieve themselves; they essentially have to learn how to go in a nappy, or else let it happen because they can't hold it in any longer. Then they have unlearn this with potty training. It's crazy really.

I'd like to see the Greens really build up some steam over the course of this parliament. If Labour are going to commit us to 'Austerity 2.0' then I think we're going to need some serious progressives to counteract the appeal of right wing fringe parties like Reform.

I'm aware I'm not properly answering your question here but it sounds like you might be better off ditching Adobe and using something like GIMP or Krita. I went through a period when I was struggling with my cracked version of photoshop and not getting anything done and discovered it was much more efficient and relaxing to spend a couple of hours learning GIMP.
If you'd rather use photoshop that's fair enough but I thought I'd just share my experience and offer a nudge in a different direction :)

I think spending all of it on feeding people who are starving. You could keep a lot of people alive on a million, even if it was just for long enough to give them a second chance on their own. And even if that second chance failed, then at least all of the goodness of those people would have more time to be in the world.

There's no need to be rude and swear at me. Be polite, offer a correction. If you're against corporations (like I am) then maybe leave their culture of antagonism at the door and help keep the Fediverse pleasant, helpful and cooperative.

When I've thought about this is in the past I've concluded that my expectations of Linux are actually higher than Windows or Mac. It's given me the expectation that if something doesn't work the way I want it then it will be possible to make it do that, whereas with other operating systems I have been more inclined to just accept a limitation and move on.

You're not doing it wrong. It's just a bit like that at the moment.
What Peertube needs is for other Fediverse platforms to build in a filter so only posts which contain video are displayed.
Peertube posts do federate but because there are way less videos produced than text and image posts (for obvious reasons) they are drowned out. Filtering by content type seems like the obvious solution. This is how Pixelfed works (but for still images), so it's clearly possible.
My feeling is that we're still in the first iteration of the Fediverse, where it's mostly trying to replace the functionality of corporate platforms. Which I think has mostly been achieved now. Hopefully it will start leaning into its unique strengths now and become really innovative.
Of course there is also the issue of adoption and Peertube has had less publicity than Mastodon and Lemmy, so it's understandable that there is less content. If you can, contact your favourite youtubers and ask them to start a Peertube channel. If enough of us do this it starts to become a thing :)

I don't play darts but it makes me genuinely sad to hear that.
Does anyone know how I can select my audio output via the command line? I'm frequently switching between using my monitors inbuilt speakers and a USB audio interface and I'm finding it laborious to navigiggerate graphically through the settings in GNOME to do so. What I'd like to do is set up a couple of bash aliases and do it in my terminal. What's the best way for me to do that? Many thanks
We have a past which is chequered, like veryone else's. Successes, failures, and things which have changed in our thinking and our values. The systems we have produced are incomplete or not current - they don't match up to what we need or want. And there is stasis and inertia in them; they have not changed for a few generations. Change *will* come at some point though, whether we have a say in it or not. What shall we do to define, advocate and enact our stake in that change? What are the frontiers that we need to acknowledge and approach? What are the spirits/ideas of our culture that we can harness to make Earth a better place? I spend too much time commenting on and witnessing failed ideas and the consolidation of power to no worthwhile end. It's now my belief that the only earnest thing to do is to move forward with an imagining and an eventual implementation of systems which emerge *beside* those which are already established. None of us want to go against the system in our own lives because it punishes us if we do. So, let's make another one beside it which is better. That the old one doesn't apply to. What are your thoughts? Let's first have a discussion about our principles and concepts. Please speak openly, freely and optimistically - it might be the most important thing you ever say.
Does anyone have experience with a good privacy-focussed VPS provider? What do you recommend? I've been using 1984 for quite a while and they have been solid but they have just put their prices up. I'm thinking of getting a new laptop which uses Coreboot. The reason is that I'm into FOSS and would also like to not have IME installed. Whatever we might think of the new Labour government's leadership, I think this shows why we need a successful few years. Perhaps I'm being paranoid but if the country is disappointed with Labour I don't want them to resort to electing an even more right wing version of the Tories further down the line.
Does anyone know of a reliable source for streaming England matches at the Euros? In particular, the ones that ITV have the rights to? Bonus points if it has English commentators. I had terrible problems with their website last time Thanks :)
I have some video files which have stereo audio tracks that were created from a mono source. I think the mono signal got sent to the right channel and not the left because when I created the files in OBS I forgot to select mono audio recording. When I play the videos all the sound is on right side only. Hope that makes sense... How can I either mix down/combine the stereo tracks intoto a single mono track or replace the empty left channel with the audio content of the right channel? Is there a way to do this without reencoding the whole video file? I could do it in a video editing gui by copypasting the audio track to the other empty channel but I wonder if there might be a more efficient way of doing it. An ffmpeg command perhaps? Many thanks
Is anyone aware of an existing framework or educational tools for delivering in-person FOSS workshops?
This is a serious question, mostly addressed to the adult women among us but also to anyone else who has a stake in the matter. What did your father do for you/not do for you, that you needed? Context: I have recently become a father to a daughter, with a mother whose father was not around when she was growing up. I won't bore you all with the details but our daughter is here now and I am realising that I'm the only one in our little family who has really had a father before. But I have never been a girl. And I know that as a boy, my relationships with my mother and father were massively influential and powerful but at the same time radically different to each other. People say that daughters and fathers have a unique relationship too. Question: What was your father to you? What matters the most when it comes to a father making his daughter loved, safe, confident and free? To live a good life as an adult? I'd like this to be a mature, personal and real discussion about daughters and fathers, rather than a political thing, so I humbly ask to please speak from the heart and not the head on this one :) Thank you P.S Apologies if this question is badly written or conceived; I haven't been getting enough sleep! It is what it is!

Pretty much the title. Here is my best find so far. Really funny thread. https://lemm.ee/comment/11714893
What did other people do in the past to make our world beautiful but which we do not notice now? I am rural and I want to plant some trees and copses on my land, in particular places, with beauty in mind. It just occurred to me that others, who are long gone, may have done the same thing here in the past; planting a particular tree in its place only for its beauty. It may have outlived both themselves and their vision of what beauty is and I have not noticed it. Perhaps there are things around us which we thought were utilitarian, or even mistakes, but which were a choice made by someone with a subtler purpose than we give them credit for. Have you ever noticed something in your surroundings and thought that it was done deliberately to be beautiful, and maybe you are the only person around now to have noticed it as such?
Who are the heroes of our time? Who is driving us to a better future? And who is inspiring and guiding us? Anything goes: famous people, people in your own life, fictional people who represent something to your culture, groups of people working behind the scenes etc. The only rule is they must be current.
Is there such a thing as an automatic music playlist generator? Or even something that will play a similar track next? I've been (re)building an offline music collection and sometimes I'm too lazy/uninspired to make a new playlist or I get tired of ones I've already made. At times like this I would like to be able to select a song and tell my computer to make me a playlist of similar tracks, or use it as the basis for a 'radio' mode, like I used to do once on a streaming service. Any pointers appreciated! I'm able to use the command line and (laboriously) write primitive bash scripts. A GUI to take care of me would be ace tho ;)
Folks, I have finally figured it out. Have a baby. Since having a baby a week ago, all of a sudden everyone is willing to install a decent messaging app in order to receive pics of the baby. We explained that we weren't ready for images of our child to end up in the wrong hands via non-private apps. Another thing was telling them that the one single friend who had already got on board with this had already been recieving pics... It's been a conversation starter for many and I think seeing privacy from the point of view of a newborn has helped our family and friends understand it a bit more easily. Plus they've had to put up with it if they want any photos, so they will see it working firsthand. So, if you want to have a baby, know that it can be a wonderful opportunity to help loved ones communicate more privately. It also increases the sum total of love, community and compassion in the world and in your own life but that's a conversation for another community :) Edit: If anyone has good tips on how to share a little one's journey more privately with those that care about them, please post them in the discussion.
Does anyone know how I can see *only* the primary comments on a post on Lemmy, either in browser or (for bonus points) the Jerboa app? I often click on a post only to get bogged down and sad with people arguing back and forth about each other's comments. I would like to just see the comments in direct response the post. Possible? Thanks!
I'm thinking about getting a desktop and am looking for some advice. The machine will primarily be for photography and digital art, music production/recording and, ideally, for experimenting with local AI. I would like to use only open source firmware and drivers if possible, as well as have a discrete GPU. If I can keep cost down by buying second-hand then that is fine! I currently use Debian on my laptop and would lean towards using that on the new computer, although KXStudio looks like it could be good for the music side of things. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated :)
Hi folks, Does anyone know how to instruct cron to carry out a command when a connection to the internet is first made after boot? I have a few jobs that only need to be done once per day and require an internet connection e.g downloading the weather forecast and my rss feeds. I'm not always connected to the internet on boot and do not have the computer switched on at the same times every day. Many thanks for any suggestions.

Does anyone know of a way to distribute donations to multiple open source projects at once? I would like to donate more frequently and broadly but because of the large number of different projects it would be laborious and inefficient to donate small fractions of what I can afford to each of them manually. What would be helpful is a distributor to whom I can say "These are all the people I want want to donate to and here is some money. Please distribute it to them on my behalf." Does anything like this already exist?

Hi folks, can anyone help me figure out what's happening here with editing text? Sometimes when I'm trying to change the font of text it stops working. I'm attaching an image to better illustrate the problem. With text highlighted I go to change the font settings in the section circled in red but they do not actually change the font/update the settings outlined in blue. I cannot use the settings outlined in blue to select the font from a list, so I cannot use this as a workaround. This problem doesn't always present itself and I suspect that I'm causing it myself but I just don't know how. Any help would be much appreciated! #GIMP
Is it possible to manually select the colour to work on with Hue-saturation? Say for example I want to change the hue or saturation of an orange whilst leaving the majority of reds and yellows unaffected, how do I do this? In Hue-Saturation I can only choose from the preset colours (and Master). Or is there another tool that would accomplish this? Thanks
