Is that true in real-world terms, though?

Considering how the AI technology works today, yes, I believe it is true. We can feed an AI model 100,000 images of animals and then play with it to see what "new" animals it creates... But that is no innovation for me. The technology may get there, eventually, but it is not at that point now.

Because as is, one can spend only a tiny effort using ChatGPT and generate medium-sized works of fiction that are functionally brand-new. Yes-- I realise that they're still ultimately based on material they've been fed, but the more material they've absorbed, I imagine the less that's necessarily a constraint.

Still. We can get the AI to mix multiple styles to the point that the outcome is disguised, or so loosely related to the original sources that one cannot recognize the parts, but even then, this is not what innovation is.

On top of that, is there anything preventing the prompter from doing the heavy-lifting of 'innovation,' creating the skeleton of the plot, while ChatGPT fleshes it all out?

Agreed. If the AI operator (or handler) adds their own input then the outcome becomes, at least partially, innovation. I have already used AI text tools for my work, and modified the outcome to fit my needs and preferences. It may not be innovation, but it is also not 100% AI as I have added my own input.

That is no the case with this post and the Moebius "AI generated art" examples. Making a claim that text based prompts generating Moebius art is innovation is...well.. an insult to Moebius.

In the other hand, if I was an actual artist, using AI to mix my own art with Moebius art, that is another story. One could call that innovation, with some reserves.

Btw, Cabeza-- thanks for creating this thoughtful thread of scenarios and art. It's nice to have discussions like these, and these issues clearly aren't going away.

I am happy to collaborate with our community!

And it's interesting that it creates art like Moebius but what about the next artist who goes off with their own innovative style?

This is a good point. At the current stage, AI can copy, but can't innovate... I wonder if it will ever reach that point.

So AI can create pretty pictures but it still struggles to create coherent comics.

Correct, but for how long? Eventually an AI user (artist or not) will be able to create proper storylines.

[Discussion] The use of AI generated art in graphic novels.

The goal of this post is to discuss whenever "AI art" is good, bad, or irrelevant to graphic novels. I have been playing around with AI image creation tools since last year. Midjourney first, then Dalle, and most recently Stable Diffusion. All images in this post I "created" using Moebius based text prompts today. The quotation marks are intended as the only thing I have created are text prompts. Whenever the AI created these images is highly debatable. If I feed an AI model ten thousand panels of Moebius art and the AI returns one panel based on them, then who is the creator? Feel free to discuss the legality (copyright) of this technology, who should get the royalties or the credit. Or to discuss whenever it is ethical, but what is really interesting to me is to determine if this technology is good, bad or irrelevant for us, graphic novels readers. I know that a true connoisseur is likely to differentiate within the below images and the true work from Moebius, but for how long? We are at the verge of reaching a point where this differentiation will be impossible. Moebius passed away in 2012, so this differentiation may be possible with external tools, but what about living artists? Furthermore, what if a living artist publishes a book using AI generated art based on his own work. Is that acceptable? Should the artist disclose the AI use to the public? All that will probably come with regulation, or not, who knows. I prefer human-made art before computer-made art, especially when it comes to graphic novels. This despite knowing that some of the artists that I follow already use CGI to a greater or lesser extent, that is fine... But AI generated art is in another level, something that I do not want to welcome with open arms. Having said that, is the same as with any other technology, like it or not, it is here to stay. So what is your opinion on this matter? ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/13e1e651-35ca-42e7-9160-5f285642499b.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7417bede-57ad-451a-b059-ff1694f6cfdb.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/da6155f0-c25d-426a-9029-7fd3c99c3695.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/e4be21d3-888b-417c-b0ee-067dba99d07c.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/032b2a0d-f014-4475-b7e5-96693041a31d.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/2bf35877-ebb9-4582-944a-bf6685df654d.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/6a60f208-3ab1-44e3-832a-b4dfc8dd3438.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/9d09f6ff-78d9-4e9c-9033-8984efaec903.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/eb57916d-0477-42ba-9c8a-5efffbad7494.png) P.S: I believe I am not breaking any community rule, but if I am then please delete this post.

I was aware it is the authors third book and not the first but choose this one as the previous ones weren't available in the online store I was buying, it had good reviews and my understanding is that most of these series are stand-alone volumes with almost no connections with the previous ones.

"The Tower" by Schuiten and Peeters

This is my first time reading a book on the "The Obscure Cities" series and I loved it. The art and the story were unique and intriguing. The authors worked on the book in the mid-eighties and contacted Orson Welles to base the main character likeness on him! This is probably one of the last Welles collaborations in any medium before he passed away in 1985. But this is just anecdotal, the main appeal of the book is the art, heavily inspired by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, a famous Venetian architect from the 18th century who was known by his “Imaginary Prisons" etchings. I am happy that I discovered these series and I am looking forward to keep reading them.

    What community?

Stop having match threads and then you can rest assured no soccer community will ever form around here.

My comment was not about the bot but about the human (@Fer90Dar@lemmy.world) that post the match threads for everyone's benefit.

I am not sure what you call main r/soccer page or separate r/soccer. Perhaps something to do with how you browse reddit. I used to browse reddit with an app (RIF) and old.reddit.com and there was no such separation. Furthermore, they not only have match threads but also post-match threads, goal threads and sometimes threads for red cards, tackles, VAR... and so on.

Obviously we don't need all that around here but we need at least one post per match thread... That is the bare minimum to have, and that is why I remain strongly opposed to OP.

I am not sure if you just took the advice from one person or if there was proper discussion but know that I think is way better to keep one thread per game. Perhaps we can have more discussion about this, maybe a poll?

BTW, know that your job in this community is impressive and awesome. I am thankful for that. Keep it up!

I am strongly against this recommendation. The reason being that I am very happy with having one quick access post per top level game. That was one of the main features in r/soccer and I consider a luxury that we can have the same approach here in Lemmy.

Not having that will destroy the community for me.

Yeah, I have a tablet, which is where I tried to read digital comics. I didn't use my smartphone, desktop pc or laptop.

I admit that digital reading is suitable for graphic novels but considering that I work with a computer I value anything that I fit into my schedule that doesn't require screen time. That is the advantage of physical books for me.

I tried in the past to get used to reading digitally and it didn't work for me. One of the reasons that I read graphic novels is to reduce my time in front of the screens.

    "Pinocchio" by Winshluss

I just finished "Pinocchio" by Winshluss and it was very different than the BD that I am used to. I liked the art (resembling of Robert Crumb) and the Pinocchio adaptation for mature audiences. There is a lot to like in the clever storytelling and how the stories connect with each other. Perhaps this was not my cup of tea, but it was refreshing and definitely something very unique that I am happy to add to my collection. **EDIT:** This Pinocchio adaptation is not appropriate for children or young comic readers. Just in case it wasn't clear from my post.

This was one or my favorite scifi flicks of the nineties.

I was a fan of Lambert (thanks to the Highlander movies) and big into scifi by then. That help me ignoring all the multiple reasons there are to bash this movie.

I never saw it again but I am sure it didn't age well. I prefer to keep my memories about this movie intact.

The sequel (Fortress 2) was also bashed by the critics and it was not "good" as the first one, but I still saw it and enjoyed it.

BG3 is critically acclaimed and on path to win every GOTY award this year. Taking this into consideration any game compared against BG3 may look lackluster, not just Starfield.

I didn't play these games yet but I did play The Outer Worlds and it was acceptable to me. If Starfield is a game along the same lines then I am OK with that.

Alien (the creature) is the work of H. R. Giger, a biomechanical artist.

Biomechanical art is closely related to cyberpunk so I would answer yes to your question.

I asked ChatGPT to recommend me some scifi books... Most recommendations where invented and don't exist

We all know by now that ChatGPT is full of incorrect data but I trusted it will no go wrong after I asked for a list of sci-fi books recommendations (short stories anthologies in Spanish mostly) including book names, editorial, print year and of course ISBN. Some of the books do exist but the majority are nowhere to be found. I pick the one that caught my interest the most and contacted the editorial directly after I did not find it in their website or anywhere else. This is what they replied (Google Translate): __________________________________ ChatGPT got it wrong. We don't have any books with that title. In the ISBN that has given you the last digit is incorrect. And the correct one (9788477028383) corresponds to "The Holy Fountain" by Henry James. Nor have we published any science fiction anthologies in the last 25 years. __________________________________ I quick search in the "old site" shows that others have experienced the same with ChatGPT and ISBN searches... For some reason I thought it will no go wrong in this case, but it did.

So where exactly I see and manage my blocked communities? **EDIT**: If anyone search this post later, I think that there is a difference withing BLOCK and FILTER a community. BLOCK is at the instance level and related to my account in that instance. FILTER is at the Sync app level. I have tried both methods and they both meet my goal to stop seeing a community but if is best for me to use FILTER so I can manage this and see a list of what I have blocked in the Sync app. The disadvantage with this second method is that if I use another app to access lemmy, or my instance, then I will see all the communities that I didn't want. Not a big deal as it looks like I will be sticking with the Sync app.

    My graphic novels collection.

![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/ecf78d12-08d4-4fbe-84a5-cfb4a5c7aad0.jpeg) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/cfb98e37-fb85-4c74-ae6d-7e212d3d6c8c.jpeg) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/f5480557-3d06-4e36-9fc1-c11c6c7b56b5.jpeg) Seeing people posting their collections or hauls in r/graphicnovels was a joy so it saddens me that this community still didn't kickoff. So here I am posting my collection in an attempt to get things started. As you can see I have a varied taste, so my collection is diverse. I have many favorites but the writer I like the most is Alejandro Jorodowsky. As for the artist there are many good but the one that got me truly impressed recently was Sana Takeda (Monstress). In general I don't get superheros stuff but there are clear exceptions in this picture. I have an unread pile but opted to post only the ones I have read. I look forward for recommendations, your comments and hopefully seeing others sharing their collections. PS: Some books titles are in Spanish, feel free to ask me if you are curious about their title in English.

What gaming books do you recommend?

As an avid midlife gamer with nostalgic interest in gaming history I enjoy reading gaming books. In this picture you can see the gaming books I own. My favorite is "Masters of Doom" followed by "The Ultimate History of Video Games" (I am aware there is a second volume). I would like to hear more recommendations from you. P. S: Note that PC gaming is my thing therefore it is highly unlikely that I will get a book about consoles or console games.

    Instance not found?

I am trying to add lemm.ee as an instance but no matter what I do I am getting "instance not found". Anyone experiencing this?
