Spidergawd VII

This arrived yesterday in both vinyl and cd form. Norways best rock band delivers on their 7th album, it’s a contender for album of the year for me.

Found a cute new single

And yes, it plays at 33rpm, weirdly. The songs are You’ll be there for me / When you’re gone.

Let me see your setups

Here's mine. It's a Rega RP1 with just about every Groovetracer mod, a double pully, and the 24v motor swapped in (with the external power supply). That goes to my Schiit Mani, and then that goes into the main system, which is a big ol pile of Schiit. A Freya+ with two Vidar monoblocks. The speakers are a pair of Klipsch RP 600M II's.

Mail call!

Just new stuff this time. They had a sale, get 3 for a fixed price. And these looked like fun: Carpenter Brut / Leather Terror - synthwave, moody and cinematic. Cabaret Voltaire / The covenant, the sword and the arm of the lord - I’ve known of this group but never really listened to them, time to change that! And finally Warsaw/ this is early, early Joy Division stuff and just really great.

Got a bunch of new vinyl

Kite 1 and 4 (swedish synthpop), the new remastered Opus Dei from Laibach, and an original maxi of Life is life. Sepulchre inc. was a short-lived (this is their only release) swedish Skinny Puppy-sound a like. All in all a good catch!

Got some OG Mort Garson records, including an OG copy of Plantasia with the Simmons sticker. Have been looking for this record for as long as I've been collecting. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/3fc6fa88-0e1b-44a4-901c-dd114889f878.jpeg

For my next few posts, I will now start showing the really juicy records I was able to get. Over the weekend, I went to a record show in Philadelphia, and I was able to pull some absolute heaters from the sellers there. The biggest of these finds for me would definitely have to be the Mort Garson records I found, in particular an original 1976 copy of Mother Earth's Plantasia (with the Simmons mattress sticker on the front). Ever since I started collecting, on my Discogs I have my wantlist of items that I am looking for, and its up into the thousands now. Plantasia was one of the first 5 records in that list. I love this record to death and it has been an everlasting quest to find this record for the collection. Now the quest is complete. I was also happy that it included the extra booklet that comes with the album, so I have a complete package. The Wozard of Iz was also a very good find from this show, as that is one of the weirder records in the Mort Garson canon, but Plantasia is what takes the spotlight from these finds today.

Both are movie-themed. I wish I had seen the Belmondo one, it looks like a cool Rambo rip-off. Its a generic action theme very much in the Raiders of the lost ark vein. Viva La Muerte is a surreal movie with a surprisingly fitting theme, a child spouts non-sense and sings in danish (some would argue its the same thing). It must have been incredibly niche even at the time.

Finally got my turntable setup for the weekend!

I've been collecting vinyl for about 2 years but only got the turntable last week, but my existing USB headphone amp didn't work with it so I grabbed a Fosi tube headphone amp which sounds great! The Monolord LP was the first vinyl I got as an impulse purchase when I saw the band live, I'm finally able to spin it up :)

Burgeoning vinyl enthusiast seeking guidance about next steps

Hey everyone. After inheriting a bunch of old records, I started dipping my toes into this whole vinyl thing and... I think I'm hooked. I'd like to step a bit farther into this, but the deeper I get the more there seems to be to read up on. I'm beginning to get a little paralyzed by it, so I thought I'd ask for some direction from more wizened vinyl-loving elders. I initially had one of those little suitcase players with the garbage tinny speakers. Then I got some self-powered speakers that greatly improved my willingness to use the device. Especially for old records that haven't been particularly well cared for, when I was already accepting some pop and static, that made me start using it more. Then I upgraded the turntable to an Audio-Technica one - one of their entry-level budget-type devices - and that made me go all in. So at this point, I have a collection of over 200 records, new and old, and I almost exclusively listen to them these days when I'm in my office. The stylus that came with the turntable wore out, so I bought a new one, upgrading to a microlinear stylus. Sounds fantastic. But now I want some passive speakers that I can control through my receiver, and I'm finding that to be a more expensive item with a lot of options I don't really know how to parse through. So that's a good place to start. What's a good set of small-ish passive speakers (to fit on or near the shelf I have the turntable on) that a guy can buy on a budget? I have also noticed a lot of static and pop and... "sparkle"? on even brand new records. This I attribute to static electricity. I live in northern Colorado, the air is exceedingly dry here, and I can hardly walk across a room lately without picking up enough static to power my house through the winter. I have some anti-static inner sleeves that are nice, but they don't really get rid of the charge on the records. There seem to be a ton of different products for taking that out, but it's hard to know what the best thing is to buy, and some of it gets quite expensive pretty quick. What else am I missing that will improve my vinyl collecting and playback experience? Best ways to clean old records? Take the warp out? Things I don't even know I need to know yet?
