Announcing /c/newcommunities: please subscribe to stay informed about new communities that are created on Yiffit.net

Hello there! I have just created /c/newcommunities@yiffit.net to help local and remote users stay on top of communities that are created on Yiffit. This is especially important for NSFW communities because remote users have no way of accessing them as they don't appear on our homepage unless a) they are logged in with a Yiffit account or b) someone at their instance has made this community available. The idea for !newcommunities@yiffit.net is that community owners will be able to announce their newly created community here. Over the coming days I will back-fill all existing communities so that users will have a list of all Yiffit communities. If you are the owner of a community at Yiffit, feel free to announce it at any time. Cheers!

`Update:` File migration to object storage has been completed successfully! Hooray!

This time everything worked as expected and images are fetched correctly from object storage after having been migrated there. I'll keep the images on disk for a little while before deleting them, but right now everything is already being fetched from object storage which means we have much fewer storage constraints. Original post: `Maintenance is ongoing`: images are temporarily disabled. ETA < 1 hour. Images while be disabled while we move them to object storage. If you still see some, it's likely your browsers cache.

How to create your own community on Yiffit.net (even if you're a remote user)!

This post will explain how you can create your own community on Yiffit, regardless of whether you are a local user at this instance or not. **Background:** We have restricted the unsupervised creation of communities since that could potentially lead to abuse due to the limited moderating tools that lemmy currently has. Via request, we will still allow you to create as many communities as you want and to manage them as you see fit. We just want to avoid malicious actors. The silver lining is that this will also allow us to create communities for remote users! **How to request your own community** The process is very simple: 1. Make sure you have created an introductory post about yourself at [!chat@yiffit.net](https://yiffit.net/c/chat). This is the only condition. 2. Send a private message to [@Wander@yiffit.net](https://yiffit.net/u/Wander) with the text "COMMUNITY REQUEST" in all caps and then the following fields: * Handle (all lowercase, no spaces, underscore allowed) * Display name * If it's a NSFW, SFW or Mixed community * Whether everyone or only moderators can make posts `Note: you can create communities about nearly any topic.` Non-furry and personal communities are more than welcome. 3a. If you're a local user, the community will be created for you, you'll be appointed as mod and then ownership will be transferred to you. 3b. If you're a remote user, the community will be created for you and you'll be appointed as mod. [@Wander@yiffit.net](https://yiffit.net/u/Wander) will have to stay as owner since we can't transfer it to you, but we will not interfere with your vision or project for the community. Community handles will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Community handles need to be unique, but there's no limit on how many communities about similar topics we create as long as they're not abandoned straight away and at least some effort is put into them to get them started. Thus, for example, if 10 people want a community about protogens but each with their own style of moderation, we'll be happy to accommodate you (although we might have a fuse blow due to toaster overload :P). **Despite the restriction on unsupervised community creation, it is still our intention to allow anyone to create any community they see fit as long as it abides by the instances's overarching rules**

You need to be +18 years old to sign up, view content from or send messages to this instance. 1. All submissions that are not original content must include attribution in the title. 2. All submissions that are not original content should include a link to the artist's gallery or profile. Please note that this should be a page managed by the artist, not a link to e621. Fortunately you'll find link to valid sources on e621 itself. 2. Links to the artist's gallery or profile should not link to pages that are known to be problematic or be dedicated to hosting content featuring underage characters in a NSFW situation. 3. Submissions from artists in the DNP list are not allowed (see list below). 3. NSFW artwork featuring underage characters is not allowed. 4. AI created images are currently not allowed. Once the instance grows large enough we'll ask for user feedback on how to approach this matter and hear out our user's opinions. 5. IRL NSFW content is allowed only if: * It is related to you in some way (a photo of yourself, a photo you took, etc...) * You have permission to share the photo * Every third party in the photo is either blurred out, non-identifiable or you have their permission to publicly share the photo with their faces visible. 9. Do not post anything that was published behind a paywall and which was not publicly shared by the artist. 9. If you are an artist, you can advertise yourself in the [!commissions@yiffit.net](https://yiffit.net/c/commissions) community. There you are free to post links to your Patreon or similar and share links to e-commerce platforms or pricing pages. 8. More extreme content should be posted under its own community instead of using the general communities. 8. Aside from underage characters, there is a ban on extreme gore, snuff and similarly sadistic depictions that include some for of mutilation, non-trivial amounts of blood and death. This ban is currently indefinite but will be removed once lemmy has better moderation tools and we have a way to ensure that our site is not used to glorify problematic behavior. The ban on underage characters and characters that can evidently be mistaken of being underage is permanent. 8. No discussion of anything potentially illegal or which could get the instance in trouble. If in doubt message [@Wander@yiffit.net](https://yiffit.net/u/Wander). 8. No soliciting, advertising or dog-whistling regarding prohibited or illegal content. 9. No toxicity, no hate speech, no harassment, no brigading, no kinkshaming, no bigotry, etc... 8. No discussion of politics in local-instance posts and comments. There's other instances better suited for that. Feel free to use this instance's account to engage in remote content involving politics as long as it doesn't fall into the restrictions of rule #15. 6. If you believe that any content violates the rules, please file a report. 7. Use the [!meta@yiffit.net](https://yiffit.net/c/meta) to discuss ideas and improvement suggestions. # DNP List The following artists have expressed their desire to not have their artwork shared even with attribution. Please respect their wishes: 0. It is a safe assumption that anyone not wanting their artwork shared on e621 wouldn't want to have it shared on here. [Please follow e621's DNP list as a baseline](https://e621.net/wiki_pages/85) 1. Please also make sure you check [e621's conditional DNP list.](https://e621.net/artists/17231) 2. (There are no more entries due to Yiffit.net being very new) # FAQ Q: **Where does the name "Yiffit" come from?** A: It's a wordplay on a) reddit, which will ban access to NSFW subs via third party apps soon, as well as b) "Yiff it (fuck it), we'll run our own community with trading card games and femboy foxes" Q: **Who or what is the mascot?** A: It's a Hyena, due to "Yeen" and "Yiffit" starting with the same language. They have no name yet! Suggestions are more than welcome! Q: **Can I create a community for a specific type of content?** A: Yes, and you'll be able to moderate it according to your rules as long as it doesn't violate the overarching instance-wide rules. Also, you will need an account on Yiffit.net to be able to create a new community. Q: **Can I create SFW communities as well?** A: Yes, your success my vary since we're not a generalist furry instance but you are free to create SFW communities about any topic as long as it follows the overarching instance-wide rules. Q: **I don't have an account on Yiffit and I'm not fit for moderating a community, but can I still suggest a community so that you can create it?** A: Yes, if you create a post at [!meta@yiffit.net](https://yiffit.net/c/meta), you can request to the staff the creation for a new community you'd like to see. Q: **I'm an artist, can I advertise my commissions on here?** A: Yes! Please send me a message at @wander@yiffit.net and I'll create a community for commission adverts! Q: **Can I create a bot that posts automatically?** A: Yes, but it should be limited to one submission every two hours per community and it needs to include attribution at least in the title. We might increase or decrease the bot posting frequency depending on how it goes.

Rules update: we have removed the temporary ban on certain content now that our instance is better established.

When this instance was created, I put in place a ban on certain content that could get us in trouble in regards to federating with other instances since we weren't yet too well known. Now that two months have passed I hope we have established ourselves as an instance with good moderation and have lifted the ban for most content. There are currently two content categories that are still banned: 1. Underage characters & characters that very evidently look underage to anyone who doesn't know the character's lore (ie. 1000 year old spirit trapped in the body of a minor). This ban is permanent. 2. Content featuring gore, mutilation, death and non-trivial amounts of blood. This ban is indefinite but can be overturned once lemmy has better moderation tools and I find a way to ensure that by allowing this content we are not inadvertently allowing the glorification of problematic behavior or allow networking of malicious sadism. Thank you.

Merging /c/feral into /c/feralyiff

Looks like yiffit currently has 2 feral communities that host nsfw content: /c/feral and /c/feralyiff. While the first isn't explicitly flagged nsfw, its only post is a nsfw one. /c/feralyiff has a lot more traction and was established earlier, while /c/feral only got one post right now and is still described as "under construction". Hence, I propose to merge /c/feral into /c/feralyiff (if that is possible, I almost suspect not), or alternatively close the community to direct any posts to the more established community.

Update and statement in regards to our last weekly discussion, including a new rule that bans the discussion of irl bestiality.

**If you can, please read this whole post. There is a TLDR at the bottom. Please feel free to share your feedback.** During the last Weekly discussion, the topic of zoophilia and bestiality was brought up. I had to step in and close the thread before things went further out of hand. This post is to address that thread as well as a series of measures and concerns for the future. I have been thinking a lot on how to write this post since I want to make sure it strikes a balance between the assertiveness that I believe is necessary and the non-judgmental attitude that a kink-positive space like Yiffit should have. `Please rest assured that non of these measures are meant to restrict the enjoyment of fictional content that we share here. They are only meant to ensure that Yiffit as a platform keeps being a place that is safe, harmonious and free of content that could lead to irl harm.` 1. A site-wide ban on the discussion of bestiality As much as an argument could be made that such a discussion would be interesting even if merely from an intellectual point of view, the truth is that we at Yiffit are woefully unprepared for this for several reasons: A) Immediate harm to users: On Lemmy / the fediverse is notoriously difficult to remove content. What you delete here is very likely still visible on other non-lemmy instances or could have been cached by a malicious instance. *EVEN in the exceptional case of a merely intellectual discussion, what users say here even as a theoretical exercise, could be used against them for harassment or even for legal action against them in some countries.* B) Propagation of false information that leads to irl harm: Yiffit must not become a platform to propagate false information that could lead to irl harm. For anyone who has legitimate questions about this subject we encourage you to source your information from sites like [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoophilia) instead of internet forums or social media. For these reasons I believe it is necessary to ban the discussion of irl bestiality as well as any similar topics related to the irl practice of sex with real animals, whether in a hypothetical scenario or not. (Basically don't use a 'hypothetically speaking' phrase to circumvent the rule). If this topic is brought up I ask you to please NOT reply and report it instead. 2. A soft-restriction in the participation in weekly discussion threads to external groups with vested interests I am sure that there was no bad intention and this is merely a side-effect on how federation works, but I have come to believe that there could be a negative impact in the enjoyment of weekly discussions if there is a sudden influx of non-lemmy users who have a certain personal interest in the subject that is being discussed. I will not restrict weekly discussions to lemmy users only for the time being, but I will try to keep an eye out for situations in which these discussions could be impacted by such an influx of users. Once again I want to highlight that I believe that none of these users really had bad intentions, but I want you to imagine what would have happened in the recent thread if while discussing the controversial subject of "puriteens" a group of these people who do not normally participate in Yiffit at all, were to jump on that thread and influence the discussion with their numbers. It would take away the enjoyment by users who regularly participate in them. Thus, the same really applies to any other topic. On a related topic: while troubleshooting outbound federation I removed all blocked instances the other day and still have to re-enable the blocklist. The current criteria for adding an instance to this list is twofold: 1. There is risk that our instance is used to distribute illegal content. This applies almost exclusively to lemmy instances. 2. There is risk that users from a remote instance harass or intentionally interfere with our organic activity. This second point is generally applicable to instances that are very political, but can apply to any other instance whose users participate in our spaces in a manner that leads us to believe they could have ulterior motives. 3. An attitude of kindness and non-judgement for a person's kinks or sexual fantasies Having discussed the harsher measures in points 1 and 2, I think it's necessary to reaffirm that I wholeheartedly want Yiffit to be a space that is queer, kink-friendly and open-minded. If anything became clear from the responses to the last discussion thread is that a person's sexual interests are not an indicator of that person's moral compass and I think it would be wrong to perpetuate false stereotypes. As such, I think it would be a serious faux pas for me to take any hot-headed action that impacts the content that is shared on Yiffit. On the contrary, I hope that the above measures (1 and 2) serve as a rational way to address the situation that happened the other and calm any concerns while in parallel we might as well double-down on keeping this place as open-minded as possible. To be more specific, over the last years I have seen a pattern in which a certain situation or drama, caused a site or the site's staff to become exceedingly defensive and feel the need to crack down on anything that could be criticized. Subsequently, I have seen how bad actors such as Kiwifarms or any other malicious interest group have weaponized this outrage to manipulate people either into compliance or into silence. As someone with a feral fursona, I have been called "zoophile" or "animal abuser" on twitter more times than I can count. During that time I went through different phases but eventually realized that bad actors will, inch by inch, demand more of your reaction / compliance or silence while holding the threat of a call-out, doxx or similar over your head. I feel like I have the obligation to do things differently with Yiffit. As such, I feel like the best strategy is to take measures that are sensible while also reassure our users that our ethos has not changed. In this regard, I want to highlight two points: 1. On the Harkness Test: While this test is an interesting thought experiment, it should not be used to censor the fictional content that a person consumes. People constantly read, watch or listen to fiction productions that feature non-consensual interactions such as battles, fights, uprisings, betrayal, manipulation, etc... It would be ridiculous to criticize one's enjoyment of Game of Thrones only because the interactions between fictional characters aren't always consensual. I don't think that the emotional highs and lows felt during a well-developed drama are that far removed from the emotional highs and lows felt during arousal. Referring back to the harkness test and the world of fiction in general, it makes little sense that a knight might be allowed to slay a dragon and kill it, but suddenly there's moral outrage if a knight is depicted laying the dragon. Any outrage would seemingly be of moral/religious origin and not really related to the actual well-being of the dragon. That said, Yiffit as a platform has and will have certain restrictions because some content can be more difficult to moderate and we will also monitor our content and comments to prevent any sort of malicious or harmful networking. But, as a rule of thumb, I and future staff will not judge you as person based on your what turns you on. Specific communities owned by Yiffit users are free to place their own restrictions and it's perfectly fine if someone does want to be more conservative in the type of content they allow. We only ask that any moderation actions they deem necessary, including bans from their community, be communicated in a respectful and non-condescending manner. 2. On the matter of zoophilia During the discussion thread several users admitted to experiencing an attraction to animals and explained that this is something they discussed with their therapist. I want to emphasize that no moderator action was taken or should be taken merely for such a confession and that I do not wish to meddle or interfere in this person's mental health therapy. Moderation actions will be taken if a person violates the rules, such as the discussion of bestiality in point 1 or we have indications that a user has ulterior motives, such as explained in point 2. I've tried to educate myself a bit and found this on wikipedia: > "Stephanie LaFarge, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School, and Director of Counseling at the ASPCA, writes that two groups can be distinguished: bestialists, who rape or abuse animals, and zoophiles, who form an emotional and sexual attachment to animals.[16] Colin J. Williams and Martin Weinberg studied self-defined zoophiles via the internet and reported them as understanding the term zoophilia to involve concern for the animal's welfare, pleasure, and consent, as distinct from the self-labelled zoophiles' concept of "bestialists", whom the zoophiles in their study defined as focused on their own gratification." When some people in that thread confessed about their attraction and subsequently began exposing their reasons on why they believe that animals can consent to sexual intercourse with humans, I do believe that they did not have bad motives and that their expression of care for animals to the extend of having become vegan is well-intended. In 2018, a now infamous furry youtuber named Kero was exposed as being involved with people who tied up, raped, mutilated and dismembered animals, including puppies. He was also caught organizing a trip to a cabin where they wanted to rape two german shepherds and he had the odd request to 'not kill them' (which leads me to believe that he knew what his accomplice was usually into). I hope you understand why I fucking want to believe the excerpt from the Wikipedia and that the people who interacted in our discussion thread the other day were different from Kero and had at least good intention, regardless of the accuracy on their theories of consent. As such I do not wish to interfere in their therapy and will hold no judgment for their involuntary attraction. I will, however, emphasize the two new rules that restrict the discussion or promotion or irl bestiality and also of non-organic interactions with ulterior motives. What this means in practice is that we caution users to be careful in how they handle such sensitive topics. While it means a lot to me that someone with a complicated personal situation feels comfortable enough on Yiffit to open up and maybe even seek the advice of other members, we will remove content if it's off-topic or brought up in an unnatural manner that makes us feel uneasy about the actual intentions of that person. Furthermore, please remember that it's nearly impossible to truly delete anything on the fediverse and asses the impact that this could have in your safety and privacy. This word of caution is of course applicable to any other topic: be careful with your privacy and please do not give us reason to believe that you're trying to use this platform to artificially spread an idea that's not related to to furry / yiff itself, whether political, personal, financial (adverts), etc... **Wrapping up. TLDR:** In summary there are two new rules: 1. Do not discuss irl bestiality. 2. Do not use Yiffit with ulterior motives that are not related to the furry fandom or yiff (for example it's okay to post your favorite kind of yiff because you want others to know about it). 2.a. As part of the rules above, we will monitor discussion threads to avoid the sudden influence of an external group with a vested interest in one of the topics of the discussion. At the same time we keep our commitment of being kink-positive and being non-judgemental about your sexual fantasies as long as content and interactions shared are not illegal or harmful. In the case of a sensitive personal circumstance being brought up, we will handle it with respect as long as it's done so in a natural, organic and safe manner. If we feel the user is being reckless with their own privacy or is trying to proselytize a certain idea, we will remove the content. Persistence in the matter could lead to a suspension or defederation. I truly hope you find this way of handling things to be level-headed and measured in order to handle a complex subject in a manner that asserts our commitment to safety and human/animal well-being without losing our ethos of openness, kink-positivity and healthy sexual expression.

The comment box of that thread in particular doesn't appear to work. Details in post body https://pawb.social/pictrs/image/1a19f1c0-8a57-45e5-b324-3921ce989b62.webm

My account is on pawb.social and i'm trying to comment on [the latest discussion thread](https://pawb.social/post/1606547?scrollToComments=true) on yiffit.net, but as the gif shows, the comment box doesn't react to clicks. Other things seem to work fine. Perplexingly, every other thread that i can find on yiffit.net lets me comment normally, it's just this one thread where the box doesn't react. That would imply that this thread in particular has a comments limit, but i can't see any indication of that. Apologies if i'm being the big dumb, it's true that most computer issues are between the keyboard and the chair I will log off for today and try again tomorrow, i have a whole rant ready in my mind god dammit

We are experiencing networking problems with outgoing connections.

Hello, since the latest upgrade we are experiencing problems with outgoing federation and it seems that even email isn't working properly. This seems to be related to some SSL/TLS problems in the newest lemmy docker image, but it could be that it only happens to us due to our current setup with a mix of ipv4/ipv6. I'm still investigating and will update once I have more information. **EDIT:** It seems that our outbound messages are failing some sort of validation. I'm spinning up an old yiffit copy to see if there's any difference in the private keys that the server uses to authenticate itself to others.

Yiffit went down for several hours this afternoon. I am sorry for the disruption and have identified the cause.

**Original title: Was the site offline / having problems for anyone else?** Hello, I just came back and noticed that the site wasn't working properly. Was this just me or did anyone else experience problems? I'm browsing through logs to try find the reason, but it could have been just an issue on my side. Thank you! **EDIT:** I think I might have found the cause. I'll keep investigating. Apologies for the downtime U_U. **EDIT2:** `I have located a database error which seems to be related to a sudden disconnection` / shutdown. After that the database wasn't able to work correctly until I rebooted the server. This can only come from a series of docker commands I ran this afternoon. It is weird that these commands don't shut down the database container gracefully, but I'll take extra precautions next time.

They'll probably launch with federation whitelist and I doubt they wouldn't defederate from us, but there's too many risks and unknowns right now. I don't think as an admin I should limit everyone's ability to interact with threads just because they're a for-profit company, but there's some huge red flags in regards to data management and potential spam. So, if anyone was wondering my stance, I'll place a precautionary domain block for now. Once we have more info and/or they have started federating, I will start thinking about objective conditions that need to be fulfilled to remove the block. It won't be based on my hatred of corporations but actual criteria in regards to guaranteeing user security and health of the fediverse. cc: [@meta](https://yiffit.net/c/meta)

`Clear cookies / cache if you can't login.` Latest lemmy version has a security fix and I've cleared existing sessions prior to 2023-07-11.

Update 2: `Clear cookies / cache and re-login`. I can confirm we were NOT impacted by the security vulnerability but I have restricted sign ups and cleared existing logins. `Security patch applied`. We were not impacted by the security incident. However, we do have a suspicious sign-up which I'll be investigated. I have made sure there's no custom emoji (attack vector) and will apply the patch as soon as possible (edit it's been applied). Browsing malicious posts from remote instances WILL NOT compromise your account. Just in case, I've also remove these posts from the database. Stay tuned for more updates. Update 1: Yiffit.net should not have been impacted by the recent security vulnerability. I'm investigating. Hello, we should not have been impacted since we don't have custom emoji. We did have one emoji, but I removed it hours ago. I do have one suspicious sign up request. I'm investigating and will potentially invalidate everyone's session so you might need to login again. Also, my login credentials as admin to Yiffit are completely different to the ones to the server. If my account here were to be compromised an attacker would not get access to the server.

PSA: Please sign out and sign back in

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/1290861 > There was a vulnerability attack on certain Lemmy instances. As part of the resolution to the attack, all accounts have been automatically signed out. The client currently does not handle this gracefully so you will need to manually sign out and sign back in. I am working on a fix for this. > > Thank you. Since I don't know if YiffIt is/was impacted by this, I would highly advise that you do this for both your desktop AND mobile apps. Plus, 2FA is a bit of a pain to get set up as of now, but it's worth it if you can.

Detecting vote manipulation or brigading (example)

After reading [this post here](https://yiffit.net/post/349155) I took a deep dive into the database and ran a few queries to see if I could use it to detect some basic manipulation such as `brigading` or other types of persistent `hostile behavior`. I'd describe this as people who could have blocked a certain community but instead seemingly dedicate themselves to continuously downvote posts, maybe because they don't like furry stuff in general. Each line in the image corresponds to one person and how many times they have downvoted posts in a given community. I won't take any actions right now, this is all very experimental. I just wanted to share this with y'all to let you know that we admins have tools to give us clues about whether some sort of brigading is going on. Interesting stuff. Personally, I'd urge people who don't like furry stuff to just block a community and carry on. There's nothing to be gained by obsessing yourself with stuff you don't like.

Should I disable downvotes?

It often makes me sad seeing some posts receiving downvotes, even though I know it's from random people across Lemmy instances who probably aren't furries. I could disable downvotes which would make it so that they're ignored by the instance and the count would only reflect the amount of upvotes. But, that also means that Yiffit users wouldn't be able to use downvotes anywhere else. What do you think?

What is the Moderation Policy of This Instance Going Forward?

So, I've been on an interesting journey lately to try and find a NSFW fediverse instance that fits my preferences. Found some unique ones that *might* work, but still not 100% sure they are "the one". It's no secret that I'm furry trash, so, it seems like we're off to a good start here at a place called "yiffit" ;D A large, endless gallery of high quality yiff is fine by me. But I like other things too, i.e. socializing and memes, learning new stuff, etc. and I've had some pretty negative experiences with some overzealous, power trippin' mods in the past. So, I'm curious about this instance in particular and its stance on moderation. -- How strict or loose is the overall policy? What is the stance on expression? What kind of content is going to be permanently off limits? If something rubs someone the wrong way, am I to at least expect a warning? Or an imediate permanent ban? Is there an appeals process? Will there be advanced notice of any major changes? How "focused" is this instance aiming to be? -- I also understand that the fediverse is a relatively new concept, and not everything is fully established yet in many respects. More than anything, I'm just trying to pin down the culture of this place. I have no intention of testing these limits, but I am tying to guage just how chill this place is and if there's anything else I should know before committing. In my experience, furries tend to be a pretty welcoming bunch, but hey, you never know. I'm curious what other people think their ideal "furryNSFW" instance looks like, and what they want to see going forward as far as moderation is concerned.

Update 3: Migration complete! Site should be more stable. Please clear cache and cookies if you experience any problems.

Migration complete. We should no longer experience weird glitches of the site not working due to problems fetching images and this causing backend errors. `Update 2:` Stopping media service for 10 minutes or less to finalize the migration. `Update 1:` We are migrating media files to a new object storage provider. There should be no degraded performance, but if you experience any this might be the cause. I'll keep you updated in this thread. You should experience no issues since this migration does not require us to stop the image service until the very end. In case you do experience any issues, this is probably the cause.

Yiffit.net has been upgraded to Lemmy version v.0.18.1. - Let's hope this one's stable enough to stay on it for a while. (You might need to refresh your browser if you get missing images).

Edit: Hello, the update has been applied! Please report any bugs. As always there might be a few problems with images for a few minutes. Try clearing cache if that happens. I hope that with this version we can stay on it for a while. Edit: the latest version is not yet up on docker hub. Waiting for it to be published. I've checked the latest commits and this new version should be extremely similar to the current one with the difference that it fixes the hot and active timelines. The latest version is up. This should have the fix for the hot and active timelines not displaying old posts. I will upgrade and hopefully we won't have to upgrade for the time being. I want to have things as stable as possible.

Yiffit.net has been updated to the latest Lemmy version to fix a security issue. However, some old posts are now hidden inside communities when sorting by hot or active. Fix expected tomorrow JUL/7.

Hello! I told myself never to do past-midnight upgrades again, but I'm happy to report that we're running the very latest version of lemmy. Most importantly, this version fixes a security issue that I don't want to disclose right now (nothing too major like on Mastodon today). Anyways, enjoy and don't forget to report any bugs. **Edit:** It seems that the current version hides old posts. Please hang in there as we look to move forward to a version that fixes this.

Yiffit has been upgraded to Lemmy v.0.18.1-rc9. Please report any bugs that you might experience.

Hello everyone, I generally try to avoid upgrading to release candidates and this time I had to do it twice! But basically these RCs seem to fix many of the bugs / issues that people were experiencing. In the previous version there was a bug that wouldn't allow users to send private messages. I already attempted to do this upgrade yesterday but the site had stopped working and I had to roll back. Apparently this was due to the object storage provider and not due to the upgrade, but I still rolled back and unfortunately we are now missing data for approximately 1 hour. Once things are mostly bug free I plan to keep upgrades to a minimum and only upgrade to stable versions. I will also monitor the performance of the current object storage provider and finally find a way to decouple the database so that we can rollback without losing any data. Thank you and apologies your the inconvenience.

Edit: hang on, there might be problems caused by an outage at our media storage provider

**Just had to rollback after the latest upgrade caused the site to crash** Still investigating. I've rolled back now. Apologies for the inconvenience. The site would have been down about an hour or so. I am so terribly sorry I wasn't around to monitor it for a while. I wanted to upgrade to fix a bug that is causing people to have trouble replying to private messages.

`Update:` I have hidden, but not blocked all lemmit.online communities

There has been concerns about lemmit.online communities being too spammy in the ALL timeline. I do not believe that the All timeline needs to be curated at an admin level, but I can see how the huge amount of automated posts can be overwhelming. I have hidden all lemmit.online communities except /c/requests@lemmit.online and /c/about@lemmit.online which are non-bot operated. I'm testing out a new feature I learned about by toggling the hidden status of a community directly in the database. If anyone's interested this is the query I used: `UPDATE community SET hidden = 't' WHERE actor_id LIKE 'https://lemmit.online%';` **A hidden community will appear only appear for Yiffit users that follow it explicitly.** You can visit its page such as 'https://yiffit.net/c/worldnews@lemmit.online' and then click on the subscribe button to be able to get a specific lemmit community in your feed. Hope you find this useful <3 **PS: the query will have to be re-run whenever a new lemmit community is discovered by this instance, but I'll figure out a way to automate it.**

`Update:` [maintenance to move images to object storage completed successfully on test instance.]() New maintenance for production instance will happen tomorrow 2023-07-01

Latest update: Yay, it works on the test instance. I created a test instance in order to not impact production and be able to test out correct settings. I'll be applying these proven settings to production tomorrow. Update: had to rollback due to problems in the migration to object storage`. This concludes the maintenance while I investigate what could be causing this. files migrate correctly over to object storage but when trying to run lemmy from there, it starts breaking down and even the internal components like the UI report unsupported files. I had to restart because lemmy-ui wouldn't even start back up due to image format / problems reading images, which is weird. Previous: `Ongoing Maintenance right now`: images are temporarily disabled as we upload them to object storage Apologies for any inconvenience.

Tomorrow there'll be a planned maintenance during which I'll switch the media hosting from local to object storage. This is now possible in a "proper" way since Lemmy v.0.18. During the interventions images won't be able to be uploaded and might not show up. Uploading images might take about 30 minutes.

I've just manually approved 46 Yiffit.net users whose email probably got lost in limbo. If you were impacted, try to login now.

I've reviewed all applications before approving the account. Only one was denied for being rude. Also, please don't give me your actual date of birth up to the day and month, and don't send me photos of your ID. It's far from necessary. I encourage you to be more protective of this sensitive data here or on other platform such as discord. Anyways, enjoy!

A few thoughts on Federation and how this instance will probably handle remote content

There's a few discussions happening right now because one Lemmy instance is hosting a community for supporters of a certain ex US president which I don't want to name. In view of this I wanted to share a few thoughts regarding remote content moderation and my thoughts on how to handle complicated scenarios. I'll be brief and expand on this when I do a proper update of the rules, but here's the gist of it. - This instance does not condone any sort of race, gender, ethnic, sexual orientation, language, etc... discrimination. While our "no politics" rule does not apply in remote communities and local Yiffit users are free to engage in political debate in remote communities, it is not allowed to use a Yiffit account to campaign or advocate for harmful discriminatory politics. - Likewise it's not allowed to use a Yiffit account to engage in harassment, brigading, raiding or similar aggressive and non-constructive behavior, especially if it's related to flooding, spamming, disrupting remote communities, etc... - If two or more users of remote instances are having a toxic argument in a remote community (ie. Non of the variables are related to our instance), I'm inclined to give the remote admins and moderators time to solve things. We wouldn't be able to keep up if we had to immediately act on every remote conflict. That is to say that my / our limited energies will be focused on keeping our spaces safe and I expect remote admins to do the same for theirs. - If remote content is seriously distributing and very illegal (CSAM distribution, for example) that remote instance will probably be blocked ASAP. - If remote content is controversial but not illegal, I am inclined to give remote admins to handle the situation. If that remote content is disturbing to our users, I am inclined to choose one of the following: A) silence the remote community (not yet implemented). B) block the remote community. C) silence the remote instance (not yet implemented). D) block the remote instance (last ressort). Options A to D will depend on the type of content and the purpose of the remote instance. If it's merely annoying content, a silence might suffice. If the whole instance is dedicated to systematically attacking human rights and I see 0 or negative value in federating with them, I might consider an instance block even though I hate that option because of my fear that by doing so we are crippling the fediverse. For example, an instance dedicated to doxxing will probably get the axe. That said, please be prepared to block offensive or controversial remote content first. If the remote content can be avoided by not visiting a certain community or by simply having it blocked, then please allow up to three months for me and any future moderation staff to make a decision. Unless it's disruptive and urgent, there needs to be a cooldown period before replying to any such request for several reasons: 1. To allow remote admins to deal with the situation 2. To collect more reports and opinions 3. To analyze the situation As I said before, I'm very worried about the negative impact of snap decisions. If I were to make impulsive and careless bans, users would see being part of a smaller instance with a hot-headed admin as a liability and potentially flock over to larger instances, making the whole point of a distributed network a bit moot. If a remote anti-furry community were to exist, as much as it would pain me I would have to take things equally as slow. That said, there are three exceptions: 1. Remote content that requires urgent action to prevent harm or avoid very illegal or very disturbing material. 2. Remote users interact in a toxic and unsolicited way with our users or communities. Eg. If that remote anti-furry community I used as an example were to start harassing, doxxing, causing disruption, etc... to Yiffit users or communities I that changes things drastically. That said, if such a community existed I would expect Yiffit users to stay clear from it. Block, report and carry on. 3. Temporarily because Lemmy doesn't have better moderation tools I might have to use a block for remote communities that would otherwise warrant a silence. That said, please don't expect the ALL timeline to always catering to your needs and learn to block anything you don't like as it'll be much quicker. In summary: if negative actions or content like harassment or discrimination involves our instance, either users or communities, I'll do my best to step in as quickly as possible and prevent any sort of negative consequences. If a controversy involves remote communities and remote users, feel free to report it and please allow time for remote admins and moderators to handle the situation. If the situation is not solved by remote moderation and there's no urgent need to step in to prevent harm, allow for myself and any future staff to analyze the situation and make a well-thought decision that could take months. This are my current thoughts on how a small instance can survive in a much larger sea of content and how smaller instances can prove their utility by not taking impulsive and hot-headed decisions which could negatively impact the usefulness and viability of the instance and of federated platforms as a whole. I will keep refining these thoughts and eventually consolidate them into the rules. Thank you! Any feedback is welcome!

Notice about scheduled instance restarts to prevent Hot and Active timelines from becoming stale.

Lemmy wasn't prepared for such an explosive growth and that means there are some kinks the devs need to iron out. The current version has a small bug which causes the hot and active calculation for post sorting to stop at after some time. In order to keep your timelines fresh I've setup a scheduled task to have the Lemmy service on the server restarting every four hours. The next restart will be at 14:00 UTC (2PM UTC). It will happen every four hours, always at 00 minutes. Each restart should make the site unavailable for no longer than 20 to 30 seconds. Let me thank everyone who's been posting content. You're awesome, all of you. I'll do my best to keep everything running as smoothly as possible so that you can have a great experience at using the site. Apologies for any inconvenience! **Edit:** I set it to restart every two hours. I hope it's not overkill. I calculated that the downtime is more like 10 seconds. It will always be at 0 minutes of every second hour.

2023-06-19 Update: Personal communities and your role as community moderator!

Hey everyone! I hope you're having a good time with the site and with the wider lemmyverse as a whole. I know that several users have been purposefully subscribing to many several remote communities in order to populate the All timeline with more content. Thank you a lot for this <3 **As for today's update, there are several topics I want to cover. So let's get started:** # Personal communities Personal communities are those that you create for yourself, for your friends or about a very niche topic. I wanted to let you know that there's no inherent restriction on the type of communities that can be created as long the they follow the instance's overall rules. This is both applicable to local users and remote users. Everyone is free to create a community of their choice, for example to display their artwork, to talk about their favorite furry convention or to simply keep a journal. This, of course, also poses some challenges which I want to discuss. **Challenges:** There are two basic concerns: 1. It could clutter the local timeline 2. It could make the instance go too much off-topic Regarding the first concern, I realized that while useful, the local timeline should not be seen as this ultra-curated feed of furry artwork. It is very unlikely that even the local feed is going to be "one-size-fits-all". Eventually you'll have so much different content that it will be better to start using subscriptions. Hopefully soon Lemmy will allow the creation of "multi-community subscriptions", allowing users to create their own customized feeds or lists. As for the second concern, after thinking it through carefully, I came to the conclusion that my hesitation and worries should ultimately not hinder the creative expression of the community. In the end, if you create a furry space it'll remain a furry space even if people are allowed to talk about all and anything and post about any type of content. However, since the instance is in a very early stage and it can still be a make or break deal depending on what happens in the next few weeks I was thinking of placing a temporary restriction on non-furry nsfw artwork unless it's part of a larger portfolio that you, as an artist, want to post in your personal community. My intention with this is to give SFW and NSFW-furry communities a bit of a head start and use that time to gather feedback and evaluate what to do next. **In summary, this post is to say that if you want to create a community about your pets, to journal, to talk about a convention, to share cooking recipes or whatever, that you are free to do so.** We benefit much more from having an active and thriving community than we do from trying to clamp down on a meticulously curated local timeline which won't be to the liking of everyone anyways since there's so many niche kinks and interests. **A note on temporary restrictions:** You might be aware that we currently also have a temporary restriction on certain content considered more extreme while we network with other instances regarding moderation issues. I wanted to let you know that all these temporary restrictions are to be reviewed and hopefully removed within less than two months. August 15th is the date I'm aiming for right now. During this time I hope to: a) Establish closer ties with remote instances regarding moderation b) Have a mechanism to get feedback from instance users c) Have things rolling smoothly so we get a good feeling about what the "baseline" should be. Please rest assured that I don't enjoy this restriction. In my personal case, I'd much prefer to post all sorts of feral yiff but I do understand that I want to take things slowly and allow other admins to come to trust this instance first. Generally speaking, if content is not illegal, harmful or political and it does not feature underage characters, it should be okay. # Requirements for owning a community I won't extend this too much, but basically I've been thinking about the requirements that local or remote users should meet in order to own a community. It's very simple: 1. Follow the instance's overall rules. 2. Make an effort to get the community started. Don't just reserve the name and then disappear, please. 3. Be reasonably available to handle reports. Point three is the important part. **If you own a public community you are responsible for moderating it and handling reports in a timely manner most of the time.** This is the only way we can sustain the instance when in the future we might have hundreds of different communities. This does not mean that you can't go on vacation or disappear for the weekend. That's why I said "most of the time". Once instance admins / moderators are all properly set up, we'll be more than happy to help you out and we'll have each others backs, but please understand that we need you to be responsible for your community and handle reports whenever possible. If you go away for an extended period of time, please consider asking your community's users for help and getting an additional moderator on board. # Yiffit aims to be a home for your community and your creative vision The way I envision Yiffit is NOT like a discord server, where you've got the server's staff creating and moderating all the channels. Instead, Yiffit is supposed to be like discord itself (or like reddit, if you will) where you are able to create your own servers / communities and moderate them in your style. If you don't like the style or rules of a specific community you can always create your own. Or, start one for friends, to showcase your art, photos, writing, discussions, RPG sessions or whatever. Hopefully you'll find value in the open-minded, friendly and adult-only setting that Yiffit provides. The ~~world~~ instance is your canvas. PS. All this will be soon incorporated into the rules officially, but I need to re-write them first since they've turned into an unwieldy long list and need to be separated into sections.

How can we create icons for communities?

I was wondering how we should go about creating icons for communities? There's a case against using an artist's image and cropping it without their permission. On the other paw it'll difficult to find free icon packs that specialize in yiff. Maybe RPG gamedev asset icons? We could allow the use for AI images for icons only? What do you think?
