Does it count as a grilled cheese if it contains hog head cheese? Or is it a melt?

Yes, they also contain a layer of sharp cheddar, if that's important.

By special request: A caprese grilled cheese on French peasant bread with mayo

Mayo on the bread, mozzarella cheese, tomato, basil, a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper 8 minutes in the air fryer at 370f plus 2 minutes at 400f et voila! This turned out really good! Seems more like a panini than a grilled cheese, but this was the request I got lol 10/10 would make again! ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/a9be0c8c-9911-4adf-a7f1-54abeeaf8601.jpeg)

#3 Air fryer grilled cheese with sourdough and rich salted butter

This one came out really good! It's kind of a happy medium between the other two! Just slightly less crispy than the mayo, but not nearly as oily as the ghee, but still very savory and flavorful! My final verdict is that *specifically in an air fryer* salted butter is king! Runner ups are mayo for best texture, and ghee for most intense flavor, but butter is the total package lol

#2 air fryer grilled cheese with sourdough and ghee

Still just as crispy as the one with mayo, but WAY more flavor! The only downside is that it made the sandwich a lot more greasy. It tasted great but the oiliness was a little off-putting

what is included in a grilled cheese?

Personally, I think it would be fun to keep the minimum requirements to bread, cheese, butter/mayo and a grillled/heat aspect to crisp the bread. Multiple types of cheese, sure. Pesto, cilantro, dipping in tomato soup, cream cheese, all good. However, I do think the main focus of the meal should be the cheese. If bacon is a accessory for the cheese like one strip then fine. If it is the main point (like 10 slices), then no. Same for chicken, burger meat, turkey slices etc. if you want to be creative and add one slice of bacon, one slice of Turkey, one slice of chicken, then you are overriding the glory of the cheese. The golden rule with a grilled cheese is that you must respect the cheese. Extra ingredients can be included but if they detract materially from the glory of the cheese, you have made a melt.
