To be honest I've got a bunch of CDs, DVDs and game discs etc. Never stored in a shed or attic and many have rot. They tend to be particular labels, publishers or manufacturers. For example I have a few BBC audio CDs and most of those within a certain range of years have succumbed. I personally wouldn't store these in a shed but I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened under any conditions. I now use ODEs where feasible or FPGA. My game discs are mostly for looks now.

I find about 20-25% of Retrogamer still worth reading. I wonder if it's as much because it feels like they are retreading old ground or dredging up obscure and not especially interesting content.

Sadly Wireframe is no more, that was my favourite magazine of the last few years... I enjoy Switch Player and Debug Magazine, but these are both boutique low run mags that you need to order directly. I don't rate the mainstream gaming magazines much, to be honest.

Does your local library membership include electronic magazines via an app like PressReader? Mine does and there are a ton of free magazines of all genres. In general they have the last three months worth of issues and it might help you find one you like before you buy a paper copy (if indeed that's your style). Subscriptions are nearly always massively cheaper than buying in the shops.

I particularly enjoy Uncut, as being the best of all the music magazines IMHO. One of the only ones I read cover to cover is Linux Format. And I have a subscription to Retrogamer, but to be honest that's not very good anymore and I won't be renewing it.

Thursday Moans - a daily (?) chat thread

It's a Thursday again. The worst day of the week. Or is it? Disguised as a Wednesday for those south of the border, and a Tuesday for those of us in the land of the Scots. What are your moans for this day and this week, the first week of the work year? Personally, I've added app timers to all my time sink apps in an effort to become less dependent on my phone. It's 9.40am and I've already maxed out Megalodon, so I'm onto Lemmy/Voyager. Going well. Also... I'm still off with the kids. Edinburgh schools didn't break up until the 22nd of December. Which seemed like a good idea at the time, but we're paying for it now.

    Cheap Tea Recommendations, Please!

I'm sorry to report the continued decline of Aldi's "Scottish Blend" tea. It is now beyond terrible. Awful. The worst. The worse of the worst. Even worse than that. Naturally I'm not going to go from an Aldi special to Twinings. I'm not made of money. So, I'm looking for recommendations of a good cheap tea. Ideally one that goes well with your plant milk as well as cow juice. If possible, Sainsburys, M&S, Aldi, Food Warehouse or Poundies. Maybe Lidl at a stretch. They others are too far away and require me going in the car, and I'm too ~~lazy~~ environmentally conscious for that. Thanks in advance! Edit: Or Asda! For some reason I forgot that Asda is literally the nearest supermarket to the house.

Tuesday, Tuesday. Up here in Scotland (specifically Edinburgh) it's the last day of the school holidays. To any other parents north of the border - we've done it, folks. The end is in sight. Looking forward to tomorrow's hectic early morning followed by a day of bliss. Anyway, TV and Tunes Tuesday! Whatcha watching and listening to? Recommendations for movies, TV shows and music please! Personally I have the last episode of Strange New Worlds, which I'm saving for tomorrow lunchtime and then it's sayonara Paramount +. We've also just finished the reboot of Quantum Leap, which was cheesy but fun. Music wise. Well, I'm a gen-xer so I've been listening to the remasters of the Lush albums. Winning Wednesday - a daily gamedev chat thread

Oh hi. I'm not a mod or anything but felt the urge to try and post a daily chat thread. Game development can sometimes be a battle behind the scenes. I've been banging my head against a bug with a 3rd party library all week. Sometimes you need a fresh approach and today I came at it again from another angle. Turns out a DLL was being unloaded because of an API change, so the fix was to add a const & to stop my reference being deleted and the DLL unloading. 6 extra characters and it all works again! TODAY I FEEL INVINCIBLE! Have you had any gamedev wins this Wednesday? Big or small, there is nothing like a win halfway through the week.
