Okay, here me out, but the other day I accidentally rebased my nvidia Bazzite system to the testing version of the deck image. It would fuzz out before even the bios splash. So yeah, you can still mess it up lol

Aldi announced that it it looking to hire thousands of new workers, as well as increasing their minimum wage to $18 and $23 an hour.
My read on this, is that they are discussing the minimum for two separate positions. Potentially cashier and team leader. Would make sense as they don't have many employees on shift at a time.

Yeah basically. But part of why no one has tried again is because the judge made it very clear he wasn't going to just roll over and let them pull their BS. Including setting a bond of $600k for them to even try litigating it. Another part of it is that ISPs used to hand out IP addresses and PII in response to requests from media companies. This was found to be in breach of privacy laws and now those companies would have to apply for court orders, proving malfeasance, to get that information.

See then you have the whole thing in the US where the local TV market, including streaming services, won't allow you to catch a game playing at a local stadium. It's called a blackout, I guess to encourage you to go in person. Basically those services only make sense if you don't follow a local team, or you watch a bunch of other games each week.

As an Australian I genuinely find European football salaries obscene and a bit disgusting tbh. Over here both of our major codes of football, NRL (rugby) and AFL (aussie rules) have had salary caps since the late 80s. It's not something implemented per player, but instead for the total roster of a club. The point is to make the competition fairer and well, more interesting, because you don't have all the good players concentrated into a few super clubs. In 2022 it was $13.5m for AFL clubs and $10m for NRL clubs. As well, if you breach it you generally don't get to earn points on the ladder until the following season. If you did it in the past, won a premiership and it's discovered, the title will be stripped.

Oh, if I came across like I was supportive at all, my apologies. It's completely fucked. It just seemed like you were saying they bring out the dogs, specifically, because they need an animal that causes injuries. Horses do that too, I guess people discount that because a) They can't really be made to be violent on their own, and b) because most people who ride horses these days know better than to walk directly up to a human being and then keep going.
The other side of the cops statement about shit being thrown at the horses too is just, how do you know they just didn't miss? lol

Okay, so I have a few points in rebuttal, but I think we're generally on the same page. I would absolutely support a ban on political parties using deepfakes of opponents in attack ads or otherwise broadcasting them. Infact, I would support more than just fines. If it was discovered after the polls, I would support a full recall of the election. I'd suggest deregistration from that election as well, but I'd hope the voting public can show it's distaste for that behaviour. I'd also support some level of required due diligence for news media in ensuring what they're publishing is real. Though there has to be consideration of the suppression of important information. Can you imagine if the Watergate tapes were never released because it couldn't be proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were real?
So I guess that brings me to my problem with this petition. It seems to be asking for a general ban on the entire population, and that's just not something I can support. There is, and should be, higher standards of ethics expected of both of these groups. However, I don't think it should be enforced on the average citizen. They just don't have the ability to get that stuff in front of eyeballs without help.
The other side of this (I know we'd basically be pissing into the wind with how small we are) is that regulations targeting the companies themselves needs to be a part of this. You should never be able to type in the name of a notable figure (or anyone, really) into a generative AI and get it to spit out an image/video of that person. It's being used to make porn of celebrities which is incredibly damaging, but there's now been cases of students creating it of other students by feeding it pictures. If AI companies won't create safeguards, we need to make them. As it stands, it requires an immense amount of power to train picture/video-generating AIs that can fool people. So targeting larger actors makes the most sense.

Like, I do get you're trying to make a joke, but this is actually true in my opinion? Especially enlisted service members. It's literally a crime for them to not do what they're told, and what they're told to do often is murder people. Officers have a lot more control but they're also required to follow orders. The people ultimately in charge are politicians, and I'd say most of the ones sending armies to war are bad people.
Inb4 someone says "why join up then?":
- Conscription exists.
- It's often the only choice to lift yourself and family* out of poverty for some people.
- In the US they literally have army recruiters in high schools. 🤢

Hey friends, I see you just pushed another test flight build, cheers for all the new updates. However, I just tried changing the App Icon and it doesn’t work at all, just stays on the default one. I tried a bunch to see if it was just one of them glitching out, but none of them work.

I’m on an instance that has downvotes disabled, and I’m wondering if we could add an option to hide the downvote button from the UI when the signed in instance has it disabled. I’ve changed the swipe so it doesn’t have the downvote, but it still shows up in the feed. As well it could be nice to have a setting for an alternate to the downvote swipe so that auto-changes depending on instance as well.

I’m on a server that has downvotes disabled. I’m wondering if we can get an update that hides the downvote button/slide when it’s disabled? I accidentally press it 2-3 times per day and the error dialogue can be frustrating. I was thinking there could be an option for what to replace the ‘slide right to downvote’ shortcut with when it’s hidden. Such as share or copy link.

So at the moment, when you share a post, you get a link to the post on the instance the communities on. Obviously, you aren’t always sharing links with people that are also on your instance, so this behaviour is usually fine. But I have a few friends on my local instance, so it would be nice to be able to link them directly. Maybe having the options be Local/Remote/Ask, with a little options list each time if people want that.
It's a personal mash-up of the Agender, Intersex and Transgender symbols, and a little bit of inspiration from dog desexing tattoos. I'd been questioning since late puberty if I might be Intersex, I never grew an Adam's apple and hardly any body hair despite family genetics. I came out as trans femme non-binary in my early 20s, but it wasn't until the third doctor I saw for hormones that questioned if I might have an intersex condition. The first doctor I saw never questioned that my T was well below the male range because I wanted to start HRT anyway. But he also still put me on T-blockers which have some awful side-effects, including dropping my T to completely zero. Thankfully I'm off those these days and estrogen alone keeps my T where it needs to be. The last test that she ran was for sterility, so the day I got that result was when I got my official diagnosis. I'd never really wanted kids of my own, and didn't worry when starting HRT, but it still really shook me to learn that I'm not able too. Hence, I dropped into my local tattoo parlour with a rough sketch, because the adrenaline and pain from that helped me deal with my emotions in a more healthy way. Anyway, hi, I'm Norah and that's my story :)

I found a copy of this earlier in the year and posted it on archive.org. **Content Warning for police brutality.** cross-posted from: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/1330288 I'm cross-posting this here as I thought this community might find it interesting as well. I think the [way I procured it](https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/comment/1493336) also leads to a bigger discussion about the preservation of queer film & media. I think it's important, now more than ever, for younger and freshly realised queer people to see that we've been here and fighting for our rights for a really long. Videos like this one feel like they evoke a more visceral connection to that past.
So the how-to I promised in my last post: 1. Install the `neonmodem` package under your default WSL distro. I'm using Debian. You've got to move the executable to your /bin/ folder. 2. Go to your Windows Terminal settings and click on 'Add a new profile'. Duplicate your default profile. 3. Rename the profile to 'Neon Modem Overdrive'. You can download the favicon from https://neonmodem.com/favicon.png 4. Under 'Command line' you want to change it to show as below. This will launch it within it's own tab, and will close out when you quit NMO. ``` C:\Windows\system32\wsl.exe ~ --shell-type login neonmodem ``` 5. Under 'Additional settings' at the bottom, click on 'Appearance'. 6. I'm using the 'Vintage' colour scheme, and have the 'Retro terminal effects' setting enabled for those crispy old scanline vibes.
I spent this evening playing with [Neon Modem Overdrive](https://neonmodem.com/) and ended up getting it set up as it's own profile in Windows Terminal. That way I could give it it's own profile, including the retro screen effect. Will comment tomorrow with a guide :)
I’m not sure if my feedback in my last post made a huge difference, but thank you for implementing stuff like the small red dot for inbox and changing things up. I like the new inbox icon a lot, and thank you for the setting to toggle off the username. Just updated to the latest build and the avatar in the tab bar looks great!

Federated repository hosting feels like a perfect use of the technology. Microsoft have been training their closed-source AI on the open source code they host on GitHub. Moving to a private instance of a software like Gitea means you're disconnected from the wider community, and the benefits of others working on your code. I'm excited to see this feature released, we may even decide to host an instance for the community.
Is it just me or do they all of a sudden look…I dunno, chintzy? I miss the Traverse icon too…

I found a decent safari extension for iOS for redirecting links to privacy focused frontends: [Privacy Redirect](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/privacy-redirect/id1578144015) If you're self-hosting a private instance that's not secure you'll need to put http:// at the start of the URLs specifically.
Okay so, I hadn’t actually stuck my head up and checked out what’s been going on over at Twitter. But I just found this lovely post on Mastodon explaining the situation. Basically, Musk decreed that there would be a rate limit to the website if you’re not logged in. Except, when you hit that rate limit, the website loaded in your browser still tries to send out GET requests constantly and the backend server has to reject them. So, the outage is because they’re self-DDOSing themselves 😂
