As another commenter pointed out, the lower population of Lemmy is a feature not a problem.
And when an instance gets too big, smash that block button.

Someone has used FFMPEG with Whisper to generate captions/subtitles. You could take that to get a transcript then analyze it with language models like LLaMa or ChatGPT or others.

Hello! I would like the ability to disable user’s animated icons and all playing animation unless I tap on it (gifs/videos playing). The motion is distracting and makes it difficult for me to get immersed in the conversation. I think one or more toggle switches, or honor the iOS accessibility preferences (Accessibility->Motion->Reduce Motion) would be great. Essentially it would display a placeholder with a “play” triangle, in the center, pointing to the right to indicate a playable video. Except user icons would just display a still without ability to play (except when navigating to the user profile and viewing their image explicitly. Anyways just some things to think about, actual implementation is up to you. Thanks for consideration!

My understanding is some parts have to be done sequentially even though the parts themselves are multithreaded, now the different parts can all be done in parallel.

I tend to agree with this as other Lemmy apps work just fine with iOS lockdown mode such as mlem and memmy.

Alt+1-9 will select the tabs in order. I don’t know how to do any others. You can also cycle through them with ctrl+tab for cycling to the right and shift+ctrl+tab to cycle left.
I’m not sure if the first thing works on Windows but works on Linux (KDE/xfce)

That article is for lay-persons and really an awareness article I surmise. If you’re technical you are likely already aware of the security concerns with jacascript.

Malicious javascript seeks to bypass security controls. It’s one of the reasons NoScript is a thing. It could be a malware loaded from an ad. Biggest reason for adblockers imo.

I solved this problem by having all of my media in a supported format of all of my devices so no transcoding is needed. My Pi 4 can transcode two 480p streams simultaneously or a single 1080p stream but can’t do any more than that. However it can stream at least 4 streams simultaneously a mix of 4k, 1080p and 480p. It suits my needs unless I’m transcoding 4k due to subtitles 😵. Hopefully transcoding won’t be required for subtitles forever… right? Right?

Word of caution, if you have been browsing successfully until now, it could be a malicious javascript app or malware loaded from that website that is attempting to scan your network or do other things. In other words if this is a new firewall request above and beyond the standard one librewolf needs to function, proceed with cation.

Paris banned shared electric scooters, expecting a return to larger vehicles. Surprisingly, this led to a massive increase in dockless bike-sharing. September 2022’s 750,000 dockless bike trips surged to nearly 2 million by September 2023. This shift suggests Parisians still prefer shared mobility, now choosing bikes over scooters. The future impact of this trend on Parisian transport remains to be seen.

"The Human Landing System is aiming to complete its development—from project start to launch—in 79 months, which is 13 months shorter than the average for NASA major projects," the GAO wrote in its report. It's unrealistic, the GAO said, to expect the HLS program to complete development more than a year faster than that average.
"GAO found that if development took as long as the average for NASA major projects, the Artemis III mission would likely occur in early 2027," the government watchdog concluded.

I honestly do not understand their rating system. Every one of them looks to have exactly the same rating (Mozilla says 👎, People voted super creepy), but then they have a sort by least or most creepy. What gives?
Edit: nevermind looks like there are some that are “very creepy”. This rating system is kind of obtuse.

I recently updated to 17 as well and was able to disable it by turning off “Auto-Correction” and “Predictive” from General->Keyboard. A lot to give up for that new “feature” to stop getting in the way. You could also tap and hold then move the cursor to the end; I think that still works.

No judgement here. I think it’s a worthy goal just not one I am particularly interested in at this point. Maybe if the automation was a bit easier and the mobile device management was easier I might join you.

My experience is it’s really a lot of work and with the prevalence of letsencrypt, there is not a lot of automated setups for this use case (at least that I have been able to find). It is kind of a pain in the ass to run your own CA, especially if you plan to not use wildcard and to rotate certs often. If you use tailscale, they offer https certs with a subdomain given to you:
[server-name].[tailnet-name].ts.net
That’s honestly what I’m moving towards.

I submitted a new post on a community but it doesn’t show up and it’s not in my post history. Am I banned on the community or is there a bug on Voyager? I also can’t see any of my post history on the Voyager app…
My childhood favorite game. I remember bugging my father to download Chex Quest 2 from his workplace as Internet wasn’t available at home at that time…and by the time it was, I had moved on. I still break this one out to scoop or zorch some Flemoids. Music wasn’t bad either. Looks like they have a comic, tunes, and an HD version (available on Steam)…What are you waiting for? Get to zorchin’!
Hey all, Got a soundbar that supports HDMI ARC or optical audio. Optical audio requires I control with its remote but I’d rather only use the TV remote but all of my videos are encoded AAC which HDMI ARC doesn’t support. Is there a way to do a device specific custom profile to transcode audio to DTS for example?
With all the noise on lemmy, spam, and political content I have no interest in, the thought occurred to have blocklists similar to adblock lists. Has anyone looked into this before, is it already a thing? Any thoughts on that?
Hi all, I have been re-encoding using handbrake’s presets (Matroska hevc 480p/1080p) and results are good for the most part, some issues here and there. I started trying out ffmpeg with cuda and hevc_nvenc and p7 preset. Video quality looks way better but audio is very bad. I am using aac 128k and the audio is very compressed and quite frankly hurts my ears. I started looking into the handbrake options and there’s auto pass through and stereo downmixing, etc. I tried reading the ffmpeg documentation but there is a lot there and I’m not really sure what I’m doing. tldr; Anyone have tips on getting good quality audio encoding (aac) from my bluray rips?
avast ye hardies! Anyone have experience with ripping HDDVDs? My bluray rw and dvdrw will not recognize that a disk is even in the drive. Bad disk or do I need a special disk reader?
Hello, with the recent NSO hack in the wild I thought I would give lockdown mode a try. Turns out wefwef/voyager doesn’t want to play nice for some reason. I am posting this from memmy app. Would you mind taking a look into the problem? Thank you!

With all of the language models (ChatGPT, LLaMa, Bard, etc.) popping up, I wanted to rewatch Voyager due to the character development of the doctor and Seven to reawaken my imagination. I found first season available (with ads) but can’t stream other seasons except on something called Paramount+. I read through the fine print and won’t ever be subscribing to that abusive service. Anyone know where else I might be able to stream the show? Looks like about $80-90 to buy the complete series… ugh
I am interested in possibly self hosting a Nextcloud instance. Couple of questions, if I self host a lemmy or pixelfed instance can it source photos or videos from my theoretical Nextcloud instance? Another question is can I have it only sync while on the WiFi at home instead of over cell? Any way to enable access via wire guard while out and about but then only synch when at home?
