On a more practical sense, someone once told me that discipline and habit is far more important than motivation once things are properly rolling. Motivation might be the spark that gotten things rolling, but it's discipline and habit that keeps it going. (And that I ought to listen to that advice myself.)

However, in a more philosophical sense, I think accepting that you've lost your own spark and facing that very question “how does one be alive?” with the intent of reigniting that lost spark is pretty much facing the absurd. That facing that question every waking day of one's life, answering that question for every moment, is pretty much the point. Whether or not the answer makes sense (in the moment or otherwise) or not is irrelevant, because the value is not in the answer, but in the way we face it.

It could be that for today, I could face it by making a slight detour in my daily commute and allowing myself to get lost on the way home, for example. It could be that for some other day, just as an example, I could choose to face it by not wearing any underwear during a work zoom meeting, relishing on that danger of being exposed. Or it could be as trivial as making pancit by using spaghetti. Or making spaghetti by using pancit bihon. All trivial things in the big picture, but if it makes my day any little more tolerable, then so be it.

And is that a bad thing? The womb is a dark, warm, and comforting place. A place for us to get ready for the bright wide world outside.

Personally, I find Anki reviews to be torturous and has always been the worst part of my routine, to the point of putting me off learning entirely.

I do agree that it is not for everyone, and is, frankly, an acquired taste. In my own experience, however, once you've made it a habit, it becomes a lot lighter, eventually becoming routine.

What I use it for is a bit different though: I don't use it for drilling. I find that learning stuff through Anki to be terrible, even though it is certainly possible. Rather, once I've already learned stuff, Anki would then come in to keep that information fresh, and refresh it if I happen to forget it. It doesn't mean that I won't forget what's in my cards--that's up to me to make sure that I do my reviews honestly, and even that's no guarantee. However, I think that with all that, I'd be able to retain most of what I've learned.

Reddit has /r/Anki and /r/medicalschoolanki, the former of which has more general questions, and the latter is more specific to those who use Anki for their medical studies. I was thinking of at least replicating /r/Anki here but I'd love it for there to be a community here for those who use Anki for language-learning purposes. That community would form as a means to exchange information about best practices on how to use Anki for the purposes of language learning, sharing decks, etc.

One thing that I think has catapulted the amount of people flocking to lemmy.world is the reputation of the instance as being run by competent people as well as having a very decent uptime especially compared to other large instances at the time of the Reddit blackouts.

People just want to be on an instance that's trustworthy and reliable. Thus, I kind of understand why people just piled onto Lemmy.world. Besides, a lot of them just got redirected to Lemmy.world by well-meaning people who just wanted to keep things simple--simple for the refugees who just wanted simple instructions (without having to choose an instance with everything that entails).

I did this for Plurk back in the late 2000's, but not that often since the amount of lag is just incredible (but defensively so). It's a really nifty service back then though, posting through SMS, even if limited to just text.

I didn't even think about the possibility of government censorship, tbh. I was just thinking that creating a PH-centric instance might not be viable, but perhaps an instance to serve South-east Asia might be. I also briefly entertained the mental image of a very salty SEA-centric instance (like the infamous amount of salt present in SEA gaming servers), but that just intensifies the pun in my head.

On a more serious note, yeah. It doesn't have to be hosted here in the Philippines, maybe perhaps Singapore? That still faces the issues of skilled admins (to handle all the technical stuff associated in hosting an instance), as well as the associated expenses (and managing donations).

If you've got a way to access your user profile via a browser (mobile works too), you can see your saved posts there.

On any page, click/press the hamburger icon on the top-leftmost part of your screen. It'd open up a menu (or an area) where you can see your profile picture and username at the very bottom. There's a triangle next to your username, click/press that.

Another menu/area opens up that has options "Profile", "Settings", and "Logout". Click/press "Profile" to see your user profile.

You're then taken to a different page (which you can directly go to via https://your.lemmy.instance/u/your_username, for example:‌‌‌ https://lemmy.world/u/AllGoesUpMustGoDown). There, you can choose between "Overview", "Comments", "Posts" and "Saved." That last link (to your saved posts/comments) won't be visible to others (I tried).

PS: I tried looking for the same in wefwef, but I can't find it as well.

PPS: Weirdly enough, it might be faster to just go directly via the address bar of your (mobile) browser if you know what you're doing, lol!

Echoing the sentiment of the others here: MRT‌ has been operating at a loss, and this has effects on maintenance and service.

Masakit mang pasanin, kailangan talagang tanggapin. MRT without gov't subsidy would need to charge fares roughly around 60php (random guesstimate) for the entire line--kapantay ng bus fares covering the same distance, to somehow break even. I haven't crunched any numbers here though. Magkano na ba bus fares ngayon?

I have Mastodon, and I've been on the waitlist for Bluesky. I am not really into Twitter, though, and my usage of Mastodon is nearly zero.

I sometimes listen to music or watch videos in the shower. I double-bag it in clear plastic bags, and then put it in a safe location. When I change songs or videos, I‌ can interact with the screen like normal. Maybe it's just my phone or the plastic bags I use--maybe both?

I've used my smartphone in the shower a handful of times already, but I usually take steps to double bag it (put it in a clear plastic bag upside down first, fold the excess, then put it in another clear plastic bag the right way up this time). I also just let it play music/video so that I can listen/watch while I shower.

Yep! I learned that the hard way.

A good rule of thumb that I ended up following is to "plan for your worst day." This means that if I were to make a commitment to do something everyday, I should make sure that I can actually do it even on the days I couldn't be bothered to do anything. Not only does it make sure that I can actually do it (and hence, form a habit), it also forces me to prioritize the things I actually want to do.

Another rule of sorts I picked up is "a moment is roughly 20 minutes." The way I see it, it means that there's no use micromanaging my day down to the minute. I‌ normally just divide my day into at most three chunks: morning, afternoon and evening, and then allot at most two things (appointments, errands, etc.) per chunk. That way, I won't feel hurried or pressured for time.

But yeah, the main idea is not to make a schedule so oppressive I'd actually feel resentful at it, as you've said, but to make sure that it has the things I can commit myself to doing daily--even in my roughest days.

This is what my doctor told me as well. Not using those exact same words, ofc, but roughly the same sentiment. I was having a really rough time with sleep before (even got to a point when I was basically operating on a variable, non-24 hour cycle). The advice they gave me basically boiled down to: "whatever you do, keep a schedule."

One of those, uh, questionable routines I've started having is using the phone on the bed as part of my bedtime routine. I usually surf the internet on the desktop, and when I transition to the phone, it's usually in the context of "yeah, nagpapaantok lang ako." Surprised pikachu face naman ako after a few hours and I find myself still awake, lol!

What I found to be a lot better is simply wash my face, brush my teeth, and then take off my eyeglasses and actually lie in bed. And only to lie in bed when I'm ready to sleep.

That's one way to resolve things, buying YT Premium and being left at peace. While I respect that, part of me thinks that it is giving in to the pressure, that what Google wants is for people to give in. Thus, even if I do have the money for it, I don't think I would as a matter of principle.

Just found out about YouTube's plan to disable video playback for viewers who are using ad blockers.

From the article:

The company has confirmed to The Verge that it’s currently running “a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium.”

The statement comes after some people began noticing a new prompt warning that video playback could be cut off if YouTube detects repeated use of ad blocking tools. Android Authority earlier reported on those tests, which prevent viewers from watching more than three videos when an ad blocker is active.

I'm pretty much concerned about how it'd affect people who use ReVanced. With Manifest V3 crippling adblocker capabilities, Google going after entities such as Invidious and Vanced (I think‌ ReVanced is next, if not already being attacked), I think Google's drive to make their primary business: advertising, unblockable is getting very serious.

I could probably start watching YT a lot less, do something productive with my time. At the same time, I just feel irritated enough that want to watch YT in any other way other than Google's way.

Really feeling conflicted about this. That the reborn station is a joint venture with a Romualdez company, just makes me feel icky about it.

I know I may just be a bit too hysterical about this, I don't trust that station--not yet, at least. They really need to prove that they're willing to stand up against people in power, even the very ones that fund them.
