    Never forget Rule 34.

While you touched on the Vimeo ban, no one has yet mentioned the "goose/gander" problem here with Vimeo. Maybe I should have linked to the other videos in question to see what Vimeo us allowing? Or, judging by the reactions here to only Li's video, maybe not...!

"Really good movie" is so subjective! Let's put it this way: if you like any of the Scheer-Harryhausen collaborations as an adult, you'll still love 20 Million. It's not 2001: A Space Odyssey but it's got one of the best stop-motion monsters, dare I say, ever!

Mongoose's Drive-In HorrorHouse presents... 20 Million Miles to Earth

It's Sunday, mein mouth-breathing mavens of the monsterous! Time for a visit to the *HorrorHouse™!* Today's selection, for the pedantic 200 of you out there, isn't strictly a horror film but a sub-genre, a member in a cross-section in your Horror ∩ Science-Fiction Venn diagram: the [monster movie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_movie). And what an example of the monster movie it is! Featuring the always-breathtaking work of animation legend, [Ray Harryhausen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Harryhausen), 1957's [*20 Million Miles to Earth!*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Million_Miles_to_Earth) Suspension-of-disbelief helmets strapped on tight? The movie, one of the extremely few horror or science-fiction films based in Italy ("it's *sempre* New York or Tokyo!"), tells of an alien egg brought back to Earth by the first explorers to Venus. This egg hatches and gives birth to a little monster that in no time at all—*spoiler!*—becomes a big monster and wrecks havoc in Rome. Aww… did I give something away? Obviously important to cinema history ([MovieSnob](https://lemmy.film/c/moviesnob) never sleeps) is Harryhausen's beautiful stop-motion work, the classic scenes at the Colosseum especially be to noted. One thing *TIL* that Harryhausen shot in Rome because [*he wanted to vacation there!*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Million_Miles_to_Earth#cite_note-overview-2) Hey, films have been shot for more self-serving reasons. YouTube Link to the movie… - https://youtube.com/watch?v=6Fm0LLsB9FM Google-free links… - https://yewtu.be/watch?v=6Fm0LLsB9FM - https://yt.artemislena.eu/watch?v=6Fm0LLsB9FM - https://iv.melmac.space/watch?v=6Fm0LLsB9FM So, sorry for the slight deviation in programming…no, no I'm not and you all *like* deviations anyway! See you next week, my knuckledragging nightcrawlers, here at *Mongoose’s Drive-In HorrorHouse™!* And remember…Parma spelled backwards is *AMRAP!*

This is exactly one of the reason actors in the SAG are on strike. I mean, if it was produced better…you know, if their faces wouldn't morph while in the shot…little details like that…and that day is coming. If I were either Statham, Elba or Ms Johanssen, I'd already be on the phone to my agent, who'd then be on their phone to my attorneys.

Wouldn't you? You see it as a little fan/research project, I (and they) see it as identity theft.

Framed within the buzzsaw roars of Guitar Wolf's "[jet rock 'n' roll](https://www.guitarwolf.net/)", you're gonna get cars, motorbikes and *microphones* that spit fire like the 1966 Batmobile! Of course there's the Yakuza and gallons of fake blood! There's even military-grade weaponry that wouldn't seem out of place in Michigan's upper penninsula! Oh, and the soul searching… It's a bunch of stupid fun for the whole family…if your surname is Addams or Manson! **See it!** > Love knows no nationalities, genders or borders! Rock and roll!

Some Words of Wisdom From The *Other* Ol' Blue Eyes

Saw the 2021 documentary about the life of actor Paul Newman the other day, Pierre-François Gaudry's [*Paul Newman, derrière les yeux bleus*](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt16868058) (*Paul Newman, Behind Blue Eyes*). It's hard not to make a film about Newman's life without sanctifying the man, although he really did come close with all of his humanitarian work aside from all of the iconic roles he'd played in his career. But I'm not here to list his filmography nor his philantrophic endeavors today. Possibly another time. Something Newman said, it had to be around 1977-1980 (it's unclear from the film exactly when), stuck with me as it's as timely today as it was 40-odd years ago—maybe more so. *It's very hard to take a lot of pride in your craft if the three biggest stars in America are two robots and a shark.*

Screaming Skulls To Sleep By 💀 yt.artemislena.eu

Do you all know how much your King Mongoose loves you? I care for all of you defective darlings so much that I sat through this stinker of a film just to tell you, no, *warn* you to *stay away, far away!* The dog of a movie in question is 1958's [*The Screaming Skull*.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052169) You *know* a movie has to suck (and I don't mean blood) if it has to start out offering free funeral services to those who may die of fright in the audience. Oh, please! You could show this to your cardiopathic granny or your nine-year-old niece or nephew and the only fear generated would be that of your guests kicking your shins for showing them this tedious film! Its only real saving grace is that it's just over an hour (01:08:00), "free burial services" sequence included. I can't help question if it had been filmed hoping to be included in one of the anthology shows popular at the time such as [*Alfred Hitchcock Presents*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Hitchcock_Presents) but ultimately rejected. Clumsily edited, dread factor zero, bare minimum production values, mediocre acting, trite script with the "clues" being dribbled as if from an eyedropper. There's the haunted portrait of the departed wife created by someone from a beginner art class, painted not on canvas but posterboard!—there is a scene where the cursed painting is to be burned on a pyre and it curves under its own weight! There's a screaming skull, yes, but there are actually *two*—one is a stand-in, I suppose?—and you can see the difference! There's a shot of the titular skull on the staircase and you can see the stick that makes it "leap" from the step! One laughably "ominous" shot of perched birds flying away from their branch…not because of some ghostly force but because someone threw a rock at them clearly visible in the shot! Run, my children, *run away!* Watch whatever else is "suggested for you" or next on the playlist! Or better yet, put down your cellphones, go outside and get some fresh air…and maybe some Halloween candy too, while you're at it!

    Jerry...Jerry...

How many buttons does this movie push? The cult of personality. Stalking. Delusional disorder. Prisoner of fame. Local boy makes good. If Travis Bickle had stand-up aspirations. Today in 2023, even though [Todd Phillips](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Phillips) has already 'fessed up to it, it's hard not to notice the resemblance in Todd Phillips' [*Joker*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(2019_film)) (2019), especially with De Niro standing in for Jerry Lewis and…himself as the neurotic ~~Bickle~~ Pupkin. Was Scorsese just decades ahead of his time, like with [*New York, New York?*](https://lemmy.film/post/1489743) Yes and no. Although Scorsese himself admits an inspiration from Porter's [*Life of an American Fireman*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_of_an_American_Fireman) (1903)[^1], in my research neither our director nor any film critics mention the resemblance to [Steno](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefano_Vanzina)'s post WWII comedy [*Un americano a Roma*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_American_in_Rome) (1954) starring Italian national treasure [Alberto Sordi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Sordi) (RIP). Like Scorsese's Pupkin, Steno's Nando Mericoni also has an unrealistic obsession: to be American. Just as delusional as Pupkin, Nando's particular obsession with all things American brings him to the point of speaking English-sounding *gibberish*: his actual command of the language is almost nonexistent so he babbles to his friends and family in what *sounds like* American to their ears. He does so at any opportuniy, even when detained in a German prisoner camp during wartime! Comedian Jerry Lewis plays comedian and Johnny Carson-like late night talk show host Jerry Langford: the duality (irony?) here is that when Langford is off stage Lewis' performance is delivered as serious as the proverbial heart attack. He is a man cornered, seething with a rage, and Lewis shows his dramatic skills brilliantly. Sandra ~~Bernhardt~~ Bernhard as crazed heiress and Langford's other stalker shines hilariously during her scene with her masking-taped hostage. Robert De Niro is just like other NYC natives The Ramones: even when The Ramones covered Louis Armstrong's *What A Wonderful World*, it was still inescapably The Ramones. This is a role like not quite like other in his repertoire and De Niro tries—and mostly succeeds—as obsessed nebbish Pupkin. But it's *still* De Niro, a tough and menacing presence and that's hard to reconcile with the Pupkin character. It's got laughs. *Cringey* laughs. As is, you'll find yourself laughing at the most uncomfortable things in this film. It could have had *more* laughs if Scorsese had decided to play it as a straight-up comedy. This is most likely why *The King of Comedy* flopped at the box office. The tide had turned: the era of [The Blockbuster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockbuster_(entertainment)#Blockbuster_era) was in full swing and people wanted easier entertainment than the [*New Hollywood*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hollywood) was giving them. Friedkin had spent (and lost) millions with his epic [*Sorcerer*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorcerer_(film)) (for another post), Cimino was about to bankrupt United Artists with [*Heaven's Gate*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heaven%27s_Gate_(film)) and the *New Hollywood* was in the process of being shown the door. If Scorsese had gone more *Taxi Driver* on the treatment and played it straight-up drama, then *The King of Comedy* might have won Best Picture at the 1983 Academy Awards instead of *Joker* at the 2020 Oscars®…? As for the open ending…I've made my own conclusion. You? **Bonus link:** Porter's [*The Life of an American Fireman*](https://archive.org/details/silent-life-of-an-american-fireman). See if *you* can find the inspiration. [^1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Comedy_(film)#cite_note-15

If your end goal is to make a tight knit drama full of people in rooms talking to each other, well, The Godfather is over there ->

FTFY. IIRC (so many acronyms) your sentence above, whether you knew it or not, is almost verbatim Coppola discussing his The Godfather.

I don't think Scorsese, of all people, forgets movie history. I think someone who made a film about Méliès being forgotten in his own time isn't someone who easily forgets the technological advances you've mentioned (you've forgotten sound 😝).

To do THAT, I NEED a spectacle. I need to see something that demands I see it right away, in a theatrical environment. It needs to be a theme park ride.

Here's where we part company. First Man wasn't a "theme park ride" and yet needs to be seen on "the big screen." Eraserhead, while potent even on a smaller screen, needs to be seen on "the big screen." 2001: A Space Odyssey. D.E. Pennebaker's Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. Blazing Saddles. Lawrence of Arabia. Wouldn't you agree? Sure, I'll admit I'm cherry-picking but there are also many others I'm forgetting about and none of them are formulaic, soulless examples of moviemaking calculated just to press the dopamine drip button.

One of these days, we'll get into Cameron's Avatar. Another time, not today.

I realise technology plays an enormous role in cinema. It drives cinema. But I don't understand why you (and the general moviegoing public) insist on the junk food being served for twenty years now and the bigger the portions the better. Movies need to be grand (even when they're small), not merely big. It's still the same ham sandwich every time. Adding more and more mustard doesn't make it better nor different. FRANCHISE MOVIES ARE LIKE ALWAYS TYPING EVERYTHING IN CAPS. AND YOU CAN'T TYPE ANY BIGGER THAN THIS.

Always a pleasure, Dr Lund! 🤝

Nolan’s Batman is unironically fascist power fantasy

Are you saying there is some superhero movie that isn't? The entire genre is just that!

Fair enough that you don't like Nolan's style, Batman or otherwise—you're unequivocally entitled to your opinion—but you can't deny an intrinsic difference in quality between Nolan and, for example, Snyder or Gunn. I personally don't feel too intellectually insulted after a Nolan film.

    He's not wrong

I'd like to thank [@wilberfan@lemmy.film](https://lemmy.film/u/wilberfan) for [posting](https://lemmy.film/post/1454251) this [article](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2023-09-25/martin-scorsese-wants-moviegoers-to-fight-comic-book-movie-culture-save-cinema) from the *L.A. Times* over at [!moviesandtv@lemmy.film](https://lemmy.film/c/moviesandtv). A hot topic with some interesting (and less interesting) takes on the subject. This was going to be a mere cross-posting but, of course, you're always going to get your mouth-breathing audience in any discussion regarding the—ugh—superhero genre, so I felt the need to distance myself from that. Did you not see the name of this community? While I might admit under pressure to some exaggeration on Prof. emeritus Scorsese's part (it's Martin Scorsese, for Buddha's sake!), he's certainly not wrong. One thing that few have understood, like Scorsese has, is that while cinema has always had cookie-cutter formulas and copycat movies, since the age of the Blockbuster and especially in this age of 3D, AI and algorithms it's *all* been to reduced to formula. Campbell's [Hero's Journey](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero's_journey), [Save The Cat](https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-save-the-cat-screenwriting/) scriptwriting, [Seven Basic Plots](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Basic_Plots), etc. It's just a matter of choosing what color gimpsuit the test audience preferred. Scorsese, when he was making [*The King of Comedy*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Comedy_(film)) or [*New York, New York*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York,_New_York_(1977_film)) couldn't forsee the lowest common denominator going so low or so common. I must mention the comment by [@niktemadur@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/u/niktemadur) regarding Scorsese's reference to Christopher Nolan. Just in case anyone here can't see it, there is a world of difference between [insert any MCU/DCU/SMU movie] and Nolan's *Batman* trilogy. Especially with the second entry, [*The Dark Knight,*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight) Nolan elevates the entire genre because Nolan knows what he's doing: he made *movies* about a comic book character, the others make *comic-book movies*. Nolan's work is *cinematic.* The others' are just big, dare I say, hulking. There's just no comparison. It's the difference between [*Finnegans Wake*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnegans_Wake) and Finnegan's corner bar. [@MIDItheKID@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/u/MIDItheKID) commented… > Sure, the Marvel movies pull in more money than other movies, but the money makers are usually trash. Marvel is like the McDonald’s of movies. It’s going to pull in way more money than a fine dining establishment, but not because it’s good, because it’s the garbage that the public will take out their wallet for. There is space in the market for both of these things. For the most part we're on the same page *but* there isn't space for both, really. *Masked Gimpsuit IV: The Revenge of The Attack of The Revenge* is always going to push any smaller (independant) release off cinema screens and (maybe) on to one of the streaming services, if not push them right out of production. Dopamine hits used to have different flavors. Marketing has discovered dopamine doesn't even have to have a flavor, just get the drip timing right. God is in the details and the details have become flamingos.

And that is what movie theatres are for! I was discussing this very point in another post about how, with the proper home theatre setup, the experience is good enough/just like/better than "going to the movies". Comforts of home aside, this is how movies are meant to be seen. Sorry for the tangential rant.

Ah, to have a rooftop garden.

    Yes, it is nice.

One Hand Tied Behind His Back

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.film/post/1319955 > What's the connection between the iconic film *2001: A Space Odyssey* and [art-house](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_film) purveyors [The Criterion Collection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Criterion_Collection)? It may seem the obvious link is direct, that *2001* is part of the Criterion Collection but that's not the case—Criterion offers five of Kubrick's works and *2001* isn't among them. The connection is a terrible little English [B movie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B_movie) from 1964 titled [*Devil Doll*](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058007). This low-budget horror film stars Bryant Haliday, William Sylvester and Yvonne Romain but it's the first two names we're interested in today. > > [Bryant Haliday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_Haliday), in 1959 with business partner Cyrus Harvey, Jr, founded [Janus Films](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janus_Films), an American film distribution company famous for essentially creating the American market for foreign film. Janus Films imported and distributed some the most iconic films to be created outside of American borders. Ultimately, riding out the wave of success the partners sold Janus Films in 1965, with present-day Criterion doing the distribution of the Janus Films library. > > On the other hand, [William Sylvester](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Sylvester), the "token American"" in many British productions in the 1950s and 1960s, portrayed Dr Heywood Floyd in Kubrick's *2001: A Space Odyssey*. Permit me an aside: personally speaking, I always thought Sylvester had the makings of a bigger career. He certainly was handsome and talented enough, maybe with a small streak of ham in him. Even after his appearance in *2001* he (and/or his agent) never made the jump to bigger and better things, remaining in mostly smaller films and one-off television roles on both sides of the ocean. > > But back to our nexus at hand. Despite any positive reviews you may have read, I can't recommend this film even at a historic level. Usually I'll try to identify with the era of a film but even so in this case, Rod Serling did this type of thing better with one hand tied behind his back. In fact, he did…twice[^1][^2]! That's what *Devil Doll* feels like: a *Twilight Zone* episode that goes on far too long. Apparently film critic Leonard Maltin (*who?*) found the film "…An exquisitely tailored, sharply edited sleeper." Well, I'll grant you the *sleeper* bit. > > Prepare to *not* be scared. For your snoozing pleasure *[MovieSnob](https://lemmy.film/c/moviesnob) Horror Theatre* presents the wasted opportunity [*Devil Doll*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMSmEOr4Mgo)! Waste an hour and twenty minutes of your precious time…*if you dare!* > > [^1]: [*"The Twilight Zone," The Dummy* (TV Episode 1962) - IMDb](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734636/) > > [^2]: [*"The Twilight Zone," Caesar and Me* (TV Episode 1964) - IMDb](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734558/)
