100% Ippei's his best friend! That's how you know Ippei's a real one. Only a best friend would fall on his sword like that
The Los Angeles Dodgers fire Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's long-time interpreter. Mizuhara was accused by Ohtani's attorneys of engaging in a “massive theft” of Ohtani's funds to place bets with an illegal bookmaker, according to the LA Times.

Best case scenario as a Yankees fan. Those Astros rumors were making me nervous. I didn't want the Yankees to sign him but I sure as hell didn't want the Astros to land him either.

Pre-season stats matter very little for pitchers but I agree, the rotation looks bleak without Cole.

There's no way this isn't a TJ situation right? I mean, I guess Tanaka pitched with a partially torn UCL but I'm not hopeful. My guess is that they're holding off on announcing for as long as possible so they don't hurt ticket sales.
Absolutely brutal loss. The Yankees won't win finish above 3rd place without their ace.

Just because users don’t have anything to say doesn’t mean the posts are useless.
Thank you for saying that! I feel the same way but it was a long season of defending a whole army of bots that seemingly weren't being used by anyone.
Reducing bot traffic in order to prevent user-created posts from being drowned out is really my goal here so I think by default I'll leave the pre and post game threads turned off (unless someone really wants them). I also didn't really find the play-by-play comments useful for my purposes so I'll leave those off as well.
Can bots instead change the title of a post, uh, post post?
They certainly could if it was coded that way but I'd have to extend the bot a bit more to do that (and add another config option probably).
headie_sage 7 months ago • 100%
You got it! What do you think of skipping the Pre-Game and Post-Game threads and just having a single Game thread? Just thinking that three posts a game is a little much. It might be good to consolidate until at least there's more volume.
Hey all, Baseball season is almost upon us! For those of you who were around last year, you'll recall that [@cerevant@fanaticus.social](https://fanaticus.social/u/cerevant) and I ported over the redball baseball bot to Lemmy and subsequently created a bot for each team. While that was a lot of fun to work on, not many people interacted in the gameday threads. This year, I am considering scaling back the game bots to an on-demand basis (although you're certainly welcome to create your own!). For those communities that want a baseball bot for your team, let me know in this post and I'll set it up. If you want to run your own and want some help with that, I can help you with that too. Let me know your thoughts! I am open to suggestions. If you found your home team's community is without a mod, let me know and I'll turn over the keys. I'm really excited for this year's season and am hoping we get a lot more participation and posting from all you lurkers! Big shout out to [@runwaylights@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/u/runwaylights) for keeping us going through the offseason! Offseason MVP right there!

Positives:
- Shorten game times and eliminated dead time
- Expanded wild card games
- Humidors everywhere? The sanctity of the statistics must be preserved
- Freely available data and stats! You can do super cool queries on some data and even find archival clips on the MLB Film Room site
Negatives:
- Astros sign stealing scandal, both the investigation (news orgs had to bring it to light) and the punishment were really poorly handled
- Fucking with the baseballs both juicing (possibly tainting a single season HR record?) and deadening them. You gotta be consistent in-season for the sanctity of the statistics
- Humidors everywhere? Isn't it kind of fun that the ball plays differently in different stadiums because ya know, some places are dry and others are wet. Kind of like how each stadium is a little different
- Extra innings ghost runner. This has been said enough times but I'll just add my voice in here too: it's awful and must go
- Inter-league play
- Blackout restrictions
Neutrals
- Humidors everywhere
- Bigger bases
- Universal DH
All in all...I'm torn. I appreciate some rule changes that shorten game time without affecting the all holy numbers. But I don't really like the standardization he's brought to the game. Some of my favorite things about baseball are the unique characteristics of each team, city, and stadium. Baseball is a local game, not a national one like the other major sports. I'm intensely invested in my team's division and, to a lesser extent, those in my league.

Considering I'm both a Yankees fan and a big baseball fan generally, I'm torn. I could see myself hate watching this for sure.
As far as dramatization goes, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a sport that lends itself to drama more than baseball. How can you not be romantic and all. Then again, the season is long and players are always coming up with whacky ways to entertain themselves in the dugouts so IDK how they'll be able to spin that with a straight face.
All in all it sounds like a good way to attract new fans to the sport which I'm all for!

Definitely a worthy class. Congrats to them all!
I was looking through some of Todd Helton's stats and noticed something wild (to me at least). In the 2000 season, Helton led the NL in WAR, H, and OBP. He led both leagues in 2B, RBI, AVG, SLG, OPS, and TB. Still somehow, he finished fifth in NL MVP voting! Crazy times.

Incredibly disappointing but not unexpected. The Yankees never had a chance against a West Coast team anyway.
What we need to do is invest in some farm team infrastructure in Kenya or Chad. Build our own Nippon Professional Baseball League in Africa. But alas, Hal is a coward with no vision.

Does anyone know if this has any impact on arbitration salaries? Someone young like Carroll making it first team already is awesome but I wonder if it affects his pay like a Rookie of the Year award does.

> For the first time since 2019, the sport’s collective batting average has risen year over year, improving from .243 last season to .248 heading into Wednesday’s games. The number of errors has fallen to the lowest tally per game in recorded history, 0.51, part of a gradual decline dating back to the 1970s. The league-wide fielding percentage, .986, is also an all-time high. > “Everything’s a hit,” Angels pitcher Patrick Sandoval said. “I have a little conspiracy about it: That they are telling the scorers to be more lenient with the hits so they can be like, ‘Oh, the new rules work. You have more hits.’”

Do you want your team to trade for him?
Is that the stove I smell? The first sparks?
It's the NL's first win since 2012
It came down to the wire, with Randy Arozarena hitting 23 in the final round, two short of tying Vlad's 25. What a night!
Highlight of the night right there!
Let's all watch some dingers together! Who you got?
Hi! I’m the admin over at fanaticus.social. We’re a sports-only instance. We already host [some of the biggest baseball communities](https://fanaticus.social/communities) on lemmy. I wanted to open a dialogue about consolidating our two communities into [!mariners@fanaticus.social](https://fanaticus.social/c/mariners). We've been hard at work on our game bots but are missing the content and users that make this community fun. I propose that the mods of this community migrate to the mariners community on fanaticus and mod there instead and make this community private with a pinned post directing users to your new home on fanaticus ([see this community as an example](https://lemmy.world/c/android)). The major benefits I see in this arrangement are: 1. Allows new users (esp. non-technical users) to find their sports communities easier 2. Protects users from losing access to their favorite sports/teams' communities due to de-federation conflicts (e.g. beehaw vs lemmy.world) 3. Allows bot developers and content-creators to more easily collaborate and create content for our communities Finally, I just want to be clear that I'm not trying to steal anyone’s communities or be an uber-mod or anything nefarious. I’m also not proposing anyone switch their home instance to fanaticus. What I’m saying is that I believe it would be best for the health of the sports communities, especially in their infancy, to consolidate to a topic-specific sports instance like fanaticus. Let me know your thoughts!
The second hardest hit HR this year. I missed this because I was traveling but holy hell, Stanton absolutely crushed this ball
