asklemmy Asklemmy What's your stance on "donating" blood plasma?
Jump
  • communism communism 6 hours ago 100%

Donating blood/plasma is a good thing. Economic conditions in which poor people feel obligated to give blood just to make enough money, whilst rich people don't feel this same pressure, are bad.

I don't know how exactly private blood banks work (in plenty of countries blood banks are public and presumably non-profit), but regardless, I assume nobody can get blood transfusions if nobody donates. So until the political system is overhauled just keep donating? Your blood donations aren't the root cause of capitalism

Well with short form videos your feed could be something more like a Twitter feed where you scroll through content from the accounts you follow instead of a grid of recommended videos where you click on one that sparks your interest. I know that sometimes people aren't allowed to own smartphones (refugees, or sometimes imposed on a defendant as part of criminal proceedings)—if you don't own a smartphone can you just not participate in society there?

Tbh when I've been required to install some kind of dodgy proprietary app that doesn't work well with GrapheneOS I just tell them I don't have a smartphone and they seem to be fine with that and offer me a "low-tech" alternative for whatever it is (usually some kind of 2FA app). It's concerning when important things are inaccessible to people without a smartphone, because of course that's the baseline for things being accessible for everyone regardless of their phone situation, e.g. people with degoogled phones etc.

If your priority is to not give a cent to Google then don't use GrapheneOS. There are other degoogled OSes for people whose priority is that. If your priority is security then you'd be willing to sacrifice on avoiding anything Google by getting GrapheneOS.

In any case, technically if you wanted to avoid anything primarily made by Google you'd have a Linux phone. The degoogled Android OSes are still based on Google's open-source code.

But also what exactly is it you're looking for that Vim can't do? I use Vim for writing pretty much everything. I use Vim for markdown and it works fine. Markdown is already pretty readable as a text file so I don't feel the need for a previewer or anything like a rich text editor (but also there are plenty of markdown editors out there if you just want to edit markdown in a RTE).

  • opensource Open Source Why is GrapheneOS against GNU?
    Jump
  • communism communism 4 weeks ago 96%

I think your question is answered by the thread you linked. Is there something in particular you don't understand?

GNU/the FSF says that GrapheneOS does not qualify as free software (which is true, it's not completely FLOSS as per the FSF's definition—the linked GNU article classifies plenty of popular Linux distros we consider to be FOSS as non-free, btw, they're not singling out Graphene), and GrapheneOS is saying they don't want to fit the FSF's definition of free software because it would mean a lack of security (which is also true; they need proprietary firmware updates from Google). The FSF has a strict definition of free software which a lot of software does not meet, and usually an entire operating system would only meet the FSF's definition out of a deliberate, conscious, ideological decision to exclude all non-free software. In their article they even list Debian as a distro which no longer meets their standards, despite Debian being known for their strict policy around only including FOSS in their repos.

This is an instance of two different entities (GNU and GrapheneOS) having fundamentally different goals (one values a strict definition of free software at all costs, one values security at all costs). You are more than welcome to do things GNU's way if you don't like GrapheneOS's way, or vice versa.

  • privacy Privacy How do i convince my brother privacy is important?
    Jump
  • communism communism 4 weeks ago 100%

I think, when you explain things to people (i.e. in instances where it's not an absence of knowledge that's the problem), the vast majority of people know we're correct, but are held back by convenience. They're embedded into the Google ecosystem or whatever, and it is a pain in the ass to migrate. There are many popular services for which there isn't a 1:1 private alternative. I can openly and confidently say that I sacrifice some convenience for privacy, and to me it is worth it. But other people, while they agree that they don't like being spied on, are used to being spied on and therefore have a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" attitude. They're already using spyware and it's not had an immediately obvious acute consequence for them, so there's not really any turning point at which they would go "this is enough" and change.

I think so long as they're aware, if they do value privacy, over time they should slowly replace the things they use. Also, some of my friends get Signal just to speak to me since I'm not really on anything else (unless they want to email me lol), so that kind of effect may push them in the right direction.

If your brother doesn't care though, he just doesn't care. Privacy is actually very straightforward: it's creepy for someone to be spying on me and watching my every move, therefore I take precautions to make that difficult for people wanting to spy on me. You don't need to convince people that being spied on is creepy. They know that, and are stopped by inertia, which they can only overcome on their own. I don't think it's worth nagging them about it when they already know what is to be known.

Good countries for hosting a VPS in terms of not being hit with censorship?

I'm having a bit of trouble researching what country would be best to rent a VPS in, in terms of not getting communist content on there censored. Because obviously if content is deemed illegal in the country the server is hosted in, the VPS host is obligated to take it down (understandable enough, you can't really ask a company to break the law for you). I'm also concerned with privacy laws too and protection from them. I've heard various good things about "freedom of speech laws" and privacy laws in Iceland, Romania, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland, but I don't know the details. Does anyone have any input? And if you recommend a certain host country, do you know of reputable VPS providers in that country?

What distro do you use for your servers?

I've only ever used desktop Linux and don't have server admin experience (unless you count hosting Minecraft servers on my personal machine lol). Currently using Artix and Void for my desktop computers as I've grown fond of runit. I'm going to get a VPS for some personal projects and am at the point of deciding what distro I want to use. While I imagine that systemd is generally the best for servers due to the far more widespread support (therefore it's better for the stability needs of a server), I have a somewhat high threat model compared to most people so I was wondering if maybe I should use something like runit instead which is much smaller and less vulnerable. Security needs are also the reason why I'm leaning away from using something like Debian, because how outdated the packages are would likely leave me open to vulnerabilities. Correct me if I'm misunderstanding any of that though. Other than that I'm not sure what considerations there are to make for my server distro. Maybe a more mainstream distro would be more likely to have the software in its repos that I need to host my various projects. On the other hand, I don't have any experience with, say, Fedora, and it'd probably be a lot easier for me to stick to something I know. In terms of what I want to do with the VPS, it'll be more general-purpose and hosting a few different projects. Currently thinking of hosting a Matrix instance, a Mastodon instance, a NextCloud instance, an SMTP server, and a light website, but I'm sure I'll want to stick more miscellaneous stuff on there too. So what distro do you use for your server hosting? What things should I consider when picking a distro?

There are other FOSS real-time voice changers for Linux, but the others I found either seemed to have fewer features, be less polished, or be abandoned. I'm not really a voice expert or anything so I'm not sure what aspects of voice a, like, forensic voice analyst or something would look at. I've just changed the pitch and I sound different enough that I wouldn't recognise the voice, which is good enough for me. Open to suggestions as to what effects would give the most privacy in terms of making it harder to identify your voice (while still being intelligible) Also, for people's reference, if you want mic input to be changed for all apps, go to three dots > Preferences > General > Audio > Process All Input Streams and enable.

What do you folks do for IRL privacy in terms of CCTV, facial recognition, etc?

Digital privacy seems quite straightforward, because your digital devices are environments you more or less can have complete control over if you want to. But when you're out and about, it's a much more uncontrolled environment. There are cameras everywhere. I wear face masks everywhere for a combo of protecting myself from illness and privacy. But the limitation is social acceptability. If anything good came out of covid it's the normalisation of face masks, but you are far from unidentifiable if your only face covering is a covid mask. We're lucky that sunglasses and hoodies on their own are fairly normal, but all of the above in combination would draw attention to you. And it's definitely not socially acceptable to walk around in a balaclava. The other thing is forensic data. If you don't wear gloves, you'll leave fingerprints everywhere, and hair too. I suppose wearing gloves is not particularly seen as weird or suspicious, but it just seems like there are a lot of considerations and challenges with preventing the state from knowing your every move when you leave the house. What considerations do you make for IRL privacy, if any? (Not particularly interested in "I don't care about IRL privacy so I don't do anything"—that's fine and your choice, but ofc this question is aimed towards those who do care)

Are there any CPUs that work well with Linux that aren't made by Intel or another company on the BDS list/that supports Israel?

I have a Ryzen 3 1300X at the moment and it's always had [this soft lock freezing bug](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen#Soft_lock_freezing) on Linux. I used to dual-boot Windows on this machine and Windows never had the same problem, so I think it is an issue with the Linux kernel (I've also replaced nearly every bit of hardware that I originally built the PC with, except for the CPU and motherboard, so it probably is an issue the kernel has with my CPU, or possibly the motherboard firmware). I've changed the kernel parameters as suggested by the Arch Wiki. The bug is pretty inconsistent about happening so only time will tell if this solves the issue. But if it doesn't solve the issue, I'd honestly consider just getting a new CPU that doesn't have this issue, as completely freezing up, unable to get to a tty or anything, and only being able to power off by physically holding down the power button, is a pretty major issue, even if it only happens sometimes. So if I do get a new CPU, or maybe just for when I'm next buying a CPU for reasons unrelated to this bug (been considering an upgrade to something that's better for compiling anyway), are there any good options out there? [Intel is investing $25 billion into Israel](https://www.reuters.com/technology/intel-get-32-billion-government-grant-new-25-billion-israel-chip-plant-2023-12-26/) and the [BNC has called for "divestment and exclusion" from it](https://bdsmovement.net/Act-Now-Against-These-Companies-Profiting-From-Genocide) (it's not officially on the BDS *consumer* boycott list, but I'm still very much not comfortable buying from Intel). But the Arch Wiki article seems to suggest this bug is applicable to Ryzen CPUs in general, or at least it never specifies a particular model or range of models. So maybe I'm limited to non-Ryzen AMD CPUs? I'm guessing this is one of the situations where two companies have a complete duopoly over the market and there isn't an all-round good solution, but thought I'd ask in case anyone had some useful input.

A branch of the flu family tree has died and won't be included in future US vaccines www.livescience.com

As such, experts have advised that the apparently extinct viruses be removed from next year's flu vaccines. > The now-extinct viruses were a branch of the influenza B family tree known as the Yamagata lineage. Scientists first reported the apparent disappearance of Yamagata viruses in 2021. At that time, experts speculated that precautions taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 — such as masking and social distancing — had not only driven the overall number of flu cases to historic lows but may have completely snuffed out this type of flu virus.

I apologise if this is already common knowledge, but I just found out you can have multiple layers of LUKS encryption on a drive!

[Image description: Screenshot of terminal output: ``` ~ ❯ lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS sda 8:0 1 62.5M 0 disk └─topLuks 254:2 0 60.5M 0 crypt └─bottomLuks 254:3 0 44.5M 0 crypt ``` /end image description] I had no idea! If anyone else is curious, it's pretty much what you would expect: ```bash cryptsetup -y -v luksFormat /dev/sda cryptsetup open /dev/sda topLuks cryptsetup -y -v luksFormat /dev/mapper/topLuks cryptsetup open /dev/mapper/topLuks bottomLuks lsblk ``` Then you can make a filesystem and mount it: ```bash mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/bottomLuks mount /dev/mapper/bottomLuks ~/mnt/embeddedLuksTest ``` I've tested putting files on it and then unmounting & re-encrypting it, and the files are indeed still there upon decrypting and re-mounting. Again, sorry if this is not news to anyone else, but I didn't realise this was possible before, and thought it was very cool when I found it out. Sharing in case other people didn't know and also find it cool :)
