Not sure what this means for him or the Cavs going forward but I just hope he makes the right decision for himself and his family. I think we'd all like to see him back in a Cavs uniform and return to his form from 2 years ago.

#9 - Cleveland Cavaliers
2022-23 record: 51-31
Result: Lost East first round
2024 title odds: +2500
After the franchise's momentum was stalled with a first-round flameout against New York, the Cavs have had a strong offseason -- from adding Max Strus and Georges Niang to rookie Emoni Bates looking like a potential steal in Cleveland's run to the summer league championship. Still, the biggest question remains if the team can make enough strides next season to convince Donovan Mitchell to extend and make The Land his home. -- McMenamin

How much would he get in a sign and trade? And how much is he worth talent wise?
I think he'd be a good add overall, given another 3pt shooting big would be nice. Just from a glance I'd have no problem giving up Dean Wade and some other bottom of the roster stuff. But that may just be an insulting offer for the Hornets

Why did he pick up his player option then? He could have gone to Houston for a max deal and no one could have stopped him.

Getting a second coaches challenge after winning the first seems like a no brainer. I would love for flops to be taken out of the game so I'll be cautiously optimistic about that change.

Emoni absolutely showed out this game. He's been getting better every game and this one was a cherry on top for the summer. I hope he earns some minutes this season, I'd love to see him hit his shots against legit NBA talent.

I would disagree with that. It's not really bizarre given leagues around the world do this to great success. Also I don't think the NBA is so single minded that they only worked on this in season tournament and nothing else to improve the game. I'm also not sure that very much time even needed to be spent on this idea given how it's already in place in other leagues and at the top level it's not very complex.
At the end of the day it was a pretty minor change to the existing infrastructure with respect to how much improvement it could impose. I see it as no negative with possible positive.

Sam Merrill straight up doesn't belong here. He's an NBA player and it just doesn't look fair (going back to last game).
cavsfan 1 year ago • 100%
So I don't see teams purposely losing, since it's not like they play more games unless they play in the final. At which point the different between 100k then 200k and 500k is not nothing. Even if some players or teams could care less about the tournament, I can't see them treating it less than a regular season game at the very least.
On your second point, yeah that's incredibly stupid. If the guys play in the games they should get paid for playing in the games. You're playing in an NBA game against NBA teams in an NBA tournament with payouts to players based on how far you go.
cavsfan 1 year ago • 100%
Why is everyone so actively negative about this? I get not caring at all, but there's clearly more than that. If you don't like this tournament...just pretend they're regular season games and nothing changes. If you already don't watch regular season games... keep not watching regular season games and nothing changes.

I'm liking the Cavs group. Philly is a real threat but I truly think our guys can take that group.
Additionally, Copy and pasted from the NBA thread:
500k each for the winners all the way down to 50k for the 8th place team will no doubt bring out some good competition. That’s some pretty nice dough even for the max contract guys. Who doesn’t want an extra 50k of pocket change? Especially going forward when the 5th place team sees other guys getting hundreds of thousands more than them, that’ll no doubt bring out the competitive spirit in a lot of guys.
East Group B is looking to be a bloodbath, same with West Group A.
I wonder if scheduling will cause any weird issues like playing a team 5 times or an intraconference team only twice. I suppose you could have games later in the season against team A or team B depending on who of your group went on to the knockout stage.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Coming soon: the NBA Cup.The NBA unveiled the details Saturday of its inaugural in-season tournament, which will have a prize pool of about $18 million and will be capped by a championship game — which won’t count in the standings — in Las Vegas on Dec. 9. It’s an event that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wanted for years, giving teams a trophy to play for during the regular season. And now, it’s finally reality.“This is a concept that has been rumbling around the league office for about 15 years,” Silver said. “It's not a new concept in sports. For those that follow particularly international soccer, it's a long tradition of having in-season tournaments ... so we thought, what a perfect opportunity for a global league like the NBA and it's a perfect fit for our game.”The tournament payouts for players on standard contracts will be $500,000 apiece for those on the winning team, $200,000 apiece for those on the runner-up, $100,000 apiece for those on the teams that lose semifinal games and $50,000 for those on the teams that lose in the quarterfinals.Two-way players on any of those teams are eligible for up to half those amounts, depending on how many games they spend on a roster during the tournament.“I can see what the aim could be,” said Miami guard Josh Richardson, who follows global soccer closely and understands the parallels Silver makes when comparing it to in-season tournaments that sport has around the world. “It gives you another chance to win something, for real. I think that’s a big part.”Games will start on Nov. 3, being played mostly on Tuesdays and Fridays in November — except for Nov. 7, when the NBA will play no games to commemorate Election Day. That announcement came Saturday, and will mark the second consecutive year when the NBA has no games on that date with hopes of promoting civic awareness and engagement. The Final Four will be in Las Vegas.“This city knows how to host big events,” Silver said.Teams were assigned to a five-team group. They'll play one game against each other; the six group winners will make the quarterfinals, as will the best two second-place teams from the groups. They were chosen as follows:West Group A — Memphis, Phoenix, the Los Angeles Lakers, Utah and Portland.West Group B — Denver, the Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans, Dallas and Houston.West Group C — Sacramento, Golden State, Minnesota, Oklahoma City and San Antonio.East Group A — Philadelphia, Cleveland, Atlanta, Indiana and Detroit.East Group B — Milwaukee, New York, Miami, Washington and Charlotte.East Group C — Boston, Brooklyn, Toronto, Chicago and Orlando.“I'm excited about this midseason tournament,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said. “I think it's going to add an element of energy and excitement for the players and coaches and the fans. I think it's a great idea.”Joe Dumars, the league’s executive vice president of basketball operations and a Hall of Famer as a player, said he thinks players will like the idea — even if it takes some time.“Everybody’s not going to buy in right away,” Dumars said. “That can’t be the goal, that everybody’s going to buy in from Day 1. These things take time. And I think as time goes on you can build this up and people can really get into it.”Tournament games, except for the championship game, will all count in the standings — much in the same way that the WNBA runs its Commissioner's Cup event. It’s been known for some time that teams will be getting only an 80-game schedule when the 2023-24 slate is released by the NBA in the coming weeks.Games 81 and 82 will be added in December; this is where things get tricky.Teams that don’t make the knockout stage will be assigned two games against other non-knockout qualifiers, and those will be the missing two games on their schedules. For the eight teams that make the knockout stage, the quarterfinal game becomes the 81st game added to their schedule. Quarterfinal losers — two from the East, two from the West — will play each other, and that’ll be the 82nd game on their schedules. Semifinalists — again, two from the East, two from the West — will play, and that game becomes the 82nd game on their schedules. That means the championship game will be one of 83 games on the schedule for the last two teams standing. And since the season is 82 games, that game won’t count in the standings, nor will the stats count for anything. They’ll be playing for money and the trophy.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/nba and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

the amount of resources it would cost us more than we realistically have and the cap space isn't there. we have 17 mil after all the cap moves for this year. he costs 33 this year, plus 16 going forward which we also can't afford. we could trade someone with a big contract, but we still need to add picks to that package.
cavsfan 1 year ago • 100%
Maybe you can't with Max contracts due to the max cap % you can pay out and then the annual raise restrictions and all that, but you always could with sub max contracts. You can also just split up the contract evenly, like Jarrett Allen's deal. He gets 100 mil for 5 years and every year he gets 20 mil. Which is in practice a regressive contract where his % cap hit decreases year over year.
What you said is interesting in that it doesn't seem to happen that often, where you could butt up against the cap one year, get relief for future years with a regressive contract. Maybe it's just the belief in kicking the can down the road and counting on cap increases while maximizing current rosters.

Emoni looked like he belonged. In the first 3 minutes he took about 5 3's, but that was what I wanted to see. He tried on defense and moved to open space really well. The fact is, this kid can shoot the rock. But he can't finish at the rim, like at all. And will have to, to be more than a 3 point specialist.

I am very excited to see Isaiah Mobley, Luke Travers and Emoni Bates. Probably at best 1 of them makes the roster this year, but they are still the most exciting prospects to me.
For these summer league games, I'd like to try out a megathread for pregame, in game and post game discussion. If you have something to contribute that would be better served as its own post, feel free to make a post. I personally love this. People were so negative about the idea of an in season tourney... but what's the worst that could happen? The worst is that nothing changes and this tourney is irrelevant. The best case scenario is we get an awesome in season tournament and get a small preview of the post season.

I'm with you. it's a lateral move in my opinion and you'd be giving up picks and another player to move your timeline up 6 years. on the other hand, moving some contracts and sending all the picks to team up the Js and Dame would be terrifying for the east. and that seems a lot better than Herro, UDFA filler and 2 firsts. why would Portland send a super star away for a sub all star package?
Cleveland Cavaliers: A Cleveland's goal this offseason was to come away with one viable wing to pair with their two star guards and their two star bigs. They ultimately landed two. Neither Georges Niang or Max Strus are especially strong defenders, but both will work wonders on an offense that took the seventh-fewest 3-pointers in the NBA last season. Besides, having Evan Mobley available to guard virtually any position makes it far easier to get away with questionable wing defense, and Isaac Okoro is still around as a defensive specialist when needed. Strus and Niang likely would have provided enough spacing for the Cavs to beat the Knicks, and now, they'll be around to help what should be an even better Cavaliers team this season. Caris LeVert was overpaid slightly at $16 million per year. It's hard to justify money beyond the mid-level exception for players who don't shoot or defend, but on only a two-year deal, he's extremely tradable and his contract will come off of the books right as Mobley's rookie extension kicks in. That's clever asset management for the Cavs in another stellar offseason.

I'm definitely concerned that our biggest weakness is SF and we traded 2 rotation SF's for what appears to be a shooting guard (who is probably 3rd on the depth chart behind Donovan and Caris, unless he gets traded). Can Strus play the 3? And does he play defense? I definitely don't know much about him, so I'd love to have any incorrect assumptions pointed out.
It appears we send Cedi Osman and Lamar Stevens and a second round pick to San Antonio, along with a second round pick to Miami.

Cavs Free Agency
UFA Georges Niang (3/26) - I'm assuming we used 8.5 of the MLE on this contract
Sign and trade Max Strus (4/63) for Cedi Osman and Lamar Stevens
Caris Lavert re-upped on a 2 year 32 mil contract.
Pretty happy with these moves so far considering we didn't have a lot of assets or any cap room available. Sad to see Cedi and Lamar go, but you have to give up something to get something.
cavsfan 1 year ago • 100%
This is a very friendly contract. Caris is easily worth 16 mil a year and even if he's not we have to sign him because we don't have the cap space to replace him.
cavsfan 1 year ago • 100%
I don't know much about George's game but 40% 3 pt shooter at 5 a game and 90% ft shooter at the 4 spot is definitely a nice addition. Only getting 2.5 rebounds in 20 minutes is definitely concerning.
Also does anyone know if this is just a standard contract or did we have to use our MLE or other exception?
