I'd love to see you take another chance on a Lemmy community. Start it up here, and post!
Weird_With_A_Beard 1 year ago • 100%
sadly... yes. I'm just not finding the community here that I built up there over 11 years. I know, I know, give this 11 years and we'll get there, too... but it's still over there.
I did the whole "delete all comments and posts and replace with the API reasoning text" thing, for my main and my few alts. BUt I find I still am heading over there on browser through old.reddit and lurking.

if it is a link in your feed, hopefully the app handles this. the web browser interface for sh.itjust.works handles the URL properly to let you see the thread while remaining here, and comment like a damn fool!
the manual way:
- take "https://lemmy.ml/c/whatever" if that is the link someone provided in a post...
- navigate to "https://sh.itjust.works/c/whatever@lemmy.ml"
- you'll notice that you're still "here" on sh.it, but seeing what is hosted "there" on lemmy.ml.
for example:

well, if you want to feed the current drama and reach those folks, you can always follow these instructions to delete your existing comments and posts, and replace them with a description on how to do the same:

We all remember that the Seahawks made the playoffs at 7-9, at that time the only team to make the playoffs with a losing record. And we know what happened in those playoffs.
I had forgotten is was Pete Carroll and John Schneider's first year; I had forgotten that Marshawn wasn't on the team until we traded for him mid season after week 4; I had forgotten that to make room for Beast Mode, we traded Julius Jones, who landed with the Saints...
The redemption has been fully redeemed; redemptification complete. Well, complete, when you continue on and watch [Episode 3, Part 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bta9FZyeMnA)
This video gives me the chills, start to finish (except at 4:20, you'd have to be high to like that moment). As hopefully we see some Lemmy adoption during the Rexxit, we should capture what makes this team and fanbase special.

for special children like me, how do we use such a thing? I'm guessing a browser plugin of some sort?
Thanks for taking the effort to make this place feel like our old, abusive, but still comfortable, home. :)

I'll "favorite" it, or whatever it's called here ...

Were you able to join yet? I noticed sometimes really new communities were hard to find from other instances' search.
I hope you were able to find and join.

Thanks for taking some steps to get an NFL community growing off of Reddit. We'll know we've "made it" when rival fans stop being nice to one another, lol
Until then: I'm a fan of growing communities on alternate platforms first; fan of the NFL second, and Hawks fan third.
Then a fan of 50 other things, and finally the 49ers. 😆

Awesome, dude, thanks for being a driver for change.
I've subbed to both, I'll go try and interact a bit on your preferred community to get some statistics up for fellow Lemmy travelers!

I'm jealous! I haven't been able to but, now with more knowledge, I'll give it another go
If it works for you, keep doing it!
It would be awesome to just search "pancakes" in jerboa, and see the pancake communities in all the instances. Or even if I know pancakes@lemmy.world exists, to go search it outright from jerboa.
We're on a mission to learn!
Weird_With_A_Beard 1 year ago • 100%
It would be nice if this was configurable. Or maybe someone enterprising can write a script to do some searching now, while our usage is low, and the number of external communities is also low.
I know as things start to get really high usage, and the number of Lemmy instances grows, and communities per instance grow, that it might be untenable. But at least for this early onboarding process where we expect a lot of new users, it would be cool to give them a soft landing experience

I'm new here, and I'm finding it's easier to join communities not on my hosted instance if links to the community are formatted like this:
!jaguars@lemmy.ml - Jacksonville Jaguars
Instead of like this:
I need to log in to a mobile browser to my instance (https://sh.itjust.works), then search with the !jaguars@lemmy.ml string, then subscribe through the sidebar... Just searching with team names is hit and miss, and I can't seem to ever find anything by url. And going right to the url only lets you join if you're logged into that instance...
Are other people finding it less than intuitive to find and join communities?

I'm going to go join and be a supporter of NFL on Lemmy. Once the community is up and running, I'll retreat into nfl@lemmy.ml and seahawks@lemmy.ml...
Until then, I'm a fan of every team community, if not every team!

And yes, Kenneth is legit

Appreciate it! So I search on feddit.de, then find, say, https://lemmy.ml/c/bills.
I then log in to https://sh.itjust.works, and search for !bills@lemmy.ml?
I'm off to try...
Edit: (for those reading along) it works fine! I am not finding a few communities that are listed on feddit.de, but it might be that those are new (less than 2 hours). Later they were located fine.
Anyone want to critique my approach? I'm trying to find and join federated communities to engage with through jerboa app... For others reading along, I learned a good way to find communities is: 1)browse to http://browse.feddit.de and search for communities by title (“NFL”, “broncos”, “NFCN_meme_war”). This is to make sure you’re seeing if your desired community exists somewhere in the fediverse. 2)log into your account at a place like http://www.beehaw.org (for me it is http://sh.itjust.works) 3)search by the title again (not the url that feddit.de let’s you copy… Don’t know why) 4)click the link to the community, it opens in your browser 5)click the sidebar link, click subscribe 6)now you can log into your app (for me it’s jerboa for Lemmy) and see posts from those communities in your subscribed feed! This seems arduous, and it is, but it’s just because I’ve been reading that search for communities in jerboa isn’t functional yet, because we’re all so new! It’ll likely get better soon

Just bragging that I'm kinda figuring this whole fediverse this out... For others reading along, I learned a good way to find communities is: 1. go to http://browse.feddit.de and search for communities by title ("NFL", "broncos", "NFCN_meme_war"). This is to make sure you're seeing if your desired community exists somewhere. click the copy link icon in the search result for the community you want. 1. log into your account at a place like http://www.beehaw.org (for me it is http://sh.itjust.works) 1. search using this format (don't forget the !): !nfl@lemmy.world, from the copied url: https://**lemmy.world**/c/**nfl** 1. click the link to the community, it opens in your browser 1. click the sidebar link, click subscribe 1. now you can log into your app (for me it's jerboa for Lemmy) sand see post from those communities in your subscribed feed! This seems arduous, and it is, but it's just because I've been reading that search for communities in jerboa isn't functional yet, because we're all so new! It'll like get better sooner

Found you from your post on @nfl/@lemmy.ml. thanks for taking the first steps.
As you find great ways to link to more NFL or Packers communities in the fediverse, would you mind sharing your successes here?
I have a dream to read League and team news in my jerboa for Lemmy app, and engage in discussions (and rants, and trash talk threads...) Similar to Reddit, but not on Reddit.

(Stop reading, below here is an approach I was trying after reading up on the fediverse, but it wasn't working for me. Saved for posterity)
(Seriously, this didn't work)
-------------------
1)go to http://browse.feddit.de and search for communities by title (“NFL”, “broncos”, “NFCN_meme_war”). This is to make sure you’re seeing if your desired community exists somewhere.
2)log into your account at a place like http://www.beehaw.org (for me it is http://sh.itjust.works)

-
go to http://browse.feddit.de
-
search for communities by title ("NFL", "broncos", "NFCN_meme_war")
-
click the copy icon for a community (it copies the instance and community name in the right format, like, "https://lemmy.ml/c/nfl" or "https://lemmy.world/c/bills")
-
go to your fediverse app (for me it's jerboa, you might have another) or log into your fediverse instance in a browser (you might already have an account at a place like http://www.beehaw.org)
-
search for a community, and paste the data you copied in step 3, above.
I hope this works!
(Edit... It's not quite working, I find communities at browse.feddit.de, but copy/search/paste isn't getting it done)

Great start. I hope to see more former redditors join the federation!
If anyone cares, I joined lemmy through sh.itjust.works instance on lemmy, downloaded jerboa for lemmy app, and I'm searching "NFL" and all the teams to try and build a community.
Fuck the Packers!

When I click to see your broncos community, I'm taken to the lemmy.ml instance. I wonder if I'm doing things wrong, because I thought federation meant I could log in at sh.itjust.works, and I could see and interact with all the federated communities?
