Quality over quantity is what should be aimed for. The internet evolves and social sites get to a point of imploding. For whatever reason, and people then move onto something else. Some of us can remember BBS and IRC.
Each place shouldn't set out to be the previous sites' replacement. It should take what worked, the good parts, and build on them. Mix them with something new, and experiment. This way, you are not directly competing with the competition, but are close enough to draw some people away from the older websites.
Everything gets too big, too popular. It happens. Reddit was at its best 7 to 10 years ago. It's well past its best before date. It has gone mouldy, started to smell, and taste funny. Time to chuck it out.

I have numerous things to keep me entertained inside. Gaming, reading, cooking, music, being creative which at present is drawing using dip pen and ink. Sometimes I will find myself writing, it could be poetry or some mindless rant. Like you, I enjoy a hike, and on days with bad weather I often find myself plotting my next few trips using one of the many map tracking websites available.
My plan for tomorrow, is building hedgehog houses. I will be doing this inside, but they will be going outside for any hedgehog visitors we get.

I can barely speak my native language of English. But I am fluent in sarcasm and cynicism. I would become tired and bored with adding some kind of trigger warning on every post.
Maybe we need to revert to old forum posts, and include a signature like the good 'ol days? Mine might say;
"In order to insult me, I must first value your opinion. No chance of that happening."

I can see Meta going ahead with their plan, and everyone blocking them. They will then start bad-mouthing the Fediverse because it's never their fault.

It's such a subjective question. As a result, the answers you get will confuse you even more. It really depends on what type of user you are, and what software and hardware you have. Most basic users will notice some graphical changes, but not much else. I am not one of these people and use my desktop for everything from gaming, writing, music, and drawing. I am perfectly happy with 11 over 10. Yes, it has little annoyances, but then every version of Windows does. Those saying version X was great, are simply wearing those rose-tinted glasses. The perfect operating system does not exist, simply because us users are such a varied bunch. So catering to us all at once will create friction and issues.
The simple answer is, if you're going to stick with Windows rather than move to Linux, then upgrade. You will have to do it at some point. So long as you don't do it within the first six months of the new version of Windows being released. Then you will be fine. The later you leave it, the less time you have to become comfortable with it before you ask this question again about the next upgraded version of Windows.

I did work for a company who ran various care homes across the country. Some for people with ill health, some just for old age. The changes care homes were having to adapt to was interesting. Not only more openly gay relationships, various different religions, etc... But also a vastly different array of hobbies, and that for some included gaming. This meant care homes having to upgrade internet/wifi, and many other adaptions. Some used handheld games machines, or mobile phones. A couple had PCs. I don't recall seeing any Mac's. A few had games machines. One elderly lady adored her original Gameboy. So it does take all sorts.
Now I'm the same age as you, so I can recall growing up and 99% of girls at school just switched off at talk of the latest game for the Spectrum 48k. We would get called geek, and other names. To a point, the stereotype will stick with some people as they grow up. But I find many, regardless of gender, do or will play games. Even if it's some form of Snake of their phone. Or maybe board games. It's all about having fun, pure and simple. Maybe they have fun in other ways. Maybe you're not compatible? I have always had the rules that a future partner would need to enjoy games at some level, mobile phone, board games, card games, etc... Have to own books and read. Have a love of music. Beyond that, it's negotiable.
So an age limit on games, nah!

Precisely. This is how I recall the early days of Reddit. Even then, early Reddit had people pointing out bugs and features they wanted. I'm happy here, and happy with the progress. Some people need to chill.

I do adore a cover version that brings something new to the song;
Orkestra Obsolete play Blue Monday
Gotye - Somebody that I used to know - Dutch choir
Not quite a cover, but more of inspiration taken from Paper Planes - 'Paper Plates' by Mr.B The Gentleman Rhymer
Umbrella - Manic Street Preachers
Toy Dolls - Nellie The Elephant
Siouxsie And The Banshees - The Passenger and Dear Prudence
Cornershop perform Norwegian Wood
I could go on for ages. Might add some more later. Hope somebody enjoys at least some of these?

Any new platform is going to have a learning curve, some more than others. But it's going to be as confusing or tricky as you want to make it. If you want to join and read every small detail about the inner workings, that's fine, but you may find blood leaking from your ears rather quickly. Just jump in, and get involved. That is the best and easiest way to learn. Yes, you may make some mistakes, or have to ask questions. But if people mock you for this, then you know the place you have joined isn't for you. As it's full of idiots.

Reddit is known for it's use of bots. Bots helped Reddit grow in its early days. I'm not surprised that bots are being used now. As more people leave, I'm sure more bots will get used to give the impression of an active community. Just lie they did in those early days.

Size isn't everything. I bet you have heard that before?
Actually, Reddit is too big. Go back ten years, then it was a good size. Before the tons of spam, reposts, onlyfans, owners hell-bent on turning Reddit into some Twitter freak shit show.

The magazines are growing faster than the content to fill them. I have lost count of the magazines I have gone to subscribe too, only to find no content. Hopefully this will change.
I am trying to stay well clear of magazines that keep mentioning Reddit. Science, sci-fi, mechanical keyboards, retro games, etc... have all been mentioned.

Rather than place all your energy into Reddit, a place that is slowly going down the toilet. Why not put your energy into making this place better? That's using your energy more efficiently. Make this place better, and people will move from Reddit.
Also, it seems a little rude, and awkward to use Kbin for nothing more than a place to organize protests to keep Reddit alive.
I am curious about selling a Reddit account rather than deleting it. Might as well get something from this shit show. Will accounts go up in value after the 1st July? I know nobody has a crystal ball.

This is turning into such a shit show. I can see some group deciding to do some form of attack on Reddit, just for shits and giggles.
When the api stops being freely accessed, loads of bots will stop. The only ones using Reddit will be ones they have created, and that will be interesting to see what rubbish they spout. I bet we will see one bot going on the rampage saying 'Spaz is wonderful'.
It will be interesting to see how they deal with GDPR for us EU users.

I think I have done my rounds and checked out almost all alternatives. Many have good points, as well as bad. The thing that made me think the Fediverse is the place, is seeing actual debate. People actually stating sources for their opinion, then replies stating alternative sources, etc... No hate, just calm breaking down of viewpoints and decent scientific sources being used. I couldn't recall the last time I saw that on Reddit. I have been in that place for 15 or so years.
This made me explore the Fediverse, that was about six months ago. I explore any new place that pops up, mainly from curiosity. Some I really have hated, but what makes one place better over another can be subjective. So I am not going to hate on anyone that opts to move elsewhere. Life is too short for that shit. I moved to Kbin after exploring other places in the fedi-wotsit-time-continuum, for no other reason than it felt relaxed, and heading in the right direction.

Hopefully the porn bots will stay on Reddit.
And then have no activity in them. Not quite sure why this is happening, is it power hungry idiots thinking if I make fifty magazines, maybe one will be popular? Do people assume if they create a magazine, it becomes active as if by magic? Or are people thinking this is similar to a new game of Pokémon, and they have to make all the magazines? I find it baffling that those who have created many magazines are not active.

The Red Crayola with The Familiar Ugly album, The Parable Of Arable Land is an amazing listen. It's psychedelic rock experimental style. Coil made the album Musick to Play in the Dark. It's an electronic, darkly ambient, spoken word piece of music. Colin Locker Kid made the album Empathica, and it's very hard to label. It has elements of hip-hop and spoken word, but it's an abstract, collage of an experimental album. No idea if any of them sound interesting? They were the first three to spring to mind.

It wouldn't surprise me. For some years, it has looked like they are gearing up to sell the site. With the latest idiotic rule change, it kind of confirms that. They are wanting to do anything that drives more users through their official website or app. Inflate users figures and price asked for Reddit goes up. Next step is to block ad blockers so more ad revenue? Who knows?
Didn't they use similar tactics to start Reddit? Bots, buzzwords, etc... to make the site look like it was busy?
Any serious investor/buyer must be concerned about recent activity. Unless you're someone like Musk. Maybe that's the plan, he will buy Reddit as well and combine it with Twitter, and create Twittit.

Seeing friends get older, have kids, and them growing up. Older tech. Old news stories. It all does very little to me. Until we reach music. I am a huge music lover, and relate music to so many things in my life. Many songs will trigger something, maybe the gig I was at, a relationship, a location, etc... That really gets me. In my head, I still think I'm in my mid-twenties or something like that. Putting memories into a historic timeline in my head is almost impossible, apparently this is related to ADHD related. Soon as a song comes on, I am transported. Also, my mind is pretty good at remembering details like the album it's from, artist, chart position, year, etc... when i struggle with retaining any other information.

Well, Lemmy is part of the Fediverse, as has been pointed out. So maybe we are all Feddies? I am using Kbin.social, so maybe I'm just a Bin? Then again, as boring as it is, maybe we are just users? Or even more shocking, maybe we are humans? Nah, surely not? I will stick to calling myself a twat.

A one of the many new invaders/users/refugees* I can only say a huge thank you for all the hard work. After lurking around the Fediverse, I settled here, simple because it suited me best. It certainly seemed more welcoming. The recent changes at Reddit gave me the push I needed to pick a new digital home. Whilst this place is still growing and improving, may need features added, etc... The foundations seem strong. Not just from the design aspect, but the users as well.
So thanks, keep up the good work. But don't wreck yourself doing it.
