    I was thinking the same.

Fine crochet cotton comes in a large variety of colours and many of them can be quite bright.

Diamond yarns Cléa (and their fine knitting weight cotton Anne) have always had colours like that, including variegated versions. Both of these are made by Circulo in Brazil.

Cléa colours can be found on this distributors page. The ‘Citrus Green’ looks very much like the photo. There is also a high-res Lemon and at least 3 different high res orange to red varieties.

I used to knit and crochet a lot with the fingering weight Anne. I was able to ask a local yarn store to bring in additional colours that I chose as long as I would buy enough of the bag of balls.

Other mercerized cottons for crochet have interesting colours and shiny finishes as well.

We’ve tried most of them over time.

Star Trek Resurgence has consistently excellent reviews. It’s about a 25 hour role play where the player makes choices for two different crew - a senior bridge officer and an NCO in engineering. It’s well done and one of our teens and I are enjoying it a lot. Great value for the sale price. My patience on this one was reinforced by its initial release being exclusive to Epic - but on Steam and on sale it’s worth it.

Bridge Crew is an older game. I have had it for a couple of years, and took advantage of the sale to pick up copies for each of our kids Steam accounts. One of them got really into it right away.

Timelines is also older. It held their interest for a bit in middle school but doesn’t seem to be one of the better tie-ins.

Star Trek Online is a long running massively multiplayer game that starts out free but then can cost a lot for in-game purchases. One of our teens is into it, and got fairly far without purchasing much, but the Steam sale is a good opportunity for them to buy things they’ve had on their wish list.

As a parent, I find these better than the endless number of Star Wars mods on Roblox that one of ours got into for a while.

Last day for Star Trek Day sale on Steam (Sept 8-15)

Several Star Trek licensed games are on Steam, now at a significantly discounted price for the annual Star Trek Day celebration. These include the MMP Star Trek Online, but also single player games Star Trek Bridge Crew and Star Trek Resurgence (a choose your own path role play game). We’d waited until Resurgence came to Steam, because we did want to buy it from Epic, but decided to be even more patient and wait for a sale so we could get it for our teens as well. I’ve been playing in parallel with one of our teens and debating the impacts of our very different choices. I have had Bridge Crew since 2022, but we got copies for the teens yesterday. One is into it. It requires running an Ubisoft account synched to Steam which can be annoying, but otherwise G2G.

The thing is that while the technobabble is just that, the process represents how engineering gets done better than most other ‘serious’ SF, albeit at compressed speed.

Voyager did a better job than any at showing how the thinking and problem-solving work gets done - which to me is more the point.

All this criticism seems to come from folks who’ve never seen nerds working in teams being nerds. They seem to want science FICTION to be locked down to concepts that someone with a mid 20th bachelor’s degree in science would know.

Whereas the real life scientists and engineers in my circle react more like Erin Macdonald did when she was working on her physics PhD and saw Voyager. She recognized the process and thought it was cool that some of the newer concepts in gravimetrics were referenced but didn’t sweat the small stuff.

Glad to have you mention that here.

So many fans of the older shows assume that Lower Decks isn’t accessible to new viewers who don’t get the references, but it’s quite the opposite. Gen Z and younger viewers are into animated comedies and it’s a successful entry point. And with the number of middle schoolers who got into manga and anime during the pandemic, the portion of the audience that prefers animation as a medium is only going to grow.

Our teens were fans of the Voyager when they were in middle school, and sampled the rest of the classic shows. Despite that they seem to be split on the animated vs live action new shows, and none of them would watch Picard.

It’s a real shame that there won’t be any new animated Star Trek after this season of Lower Decks.

Star Trek Prodigy is the true sequel to Voyager. It’s all ages / family rather than the ‘kids show’ many fans take it for. I would watch that with your GF next.

Because Prodigy is designed to be an entry point for new viewers, it introduces many of the key legacy characters and much of the lore. It has a Star Wars vibe in the pilot, mainly to draw in viewers from other franchises, but it settles into being some of the Trekiest content ever by the 6th short episode of season one.

But truly, I old enough to recall many standards being harmonized in the early 90s in the wake of the North American free trade agreement.

Whether or not a digital archive document demonstrates that Canada Post intentionally harmonized to match the US is TBC.

But it is a verifiable fact that the two-letter standard for provinces and territories has not been commonly established in all federal regulations or data standards or in provincial and territorial data systems standards.

That is to say, it has not been formally adopted as by Canada or as the ‘Canadian data standard.’

McCoy was in Encounter at Farpoint with one meta purpose - to counter the TOS fans that were campaigning hard to say that it ‘wasn’t the same universe.’

McCoy’s presence was a nice Easter Egg, but not much more. But he did the job of saying that it was the new Enterprise in continuity with the legendary ship on which he served.

Fans argued that because Roddenberry insisted on moving WW3 back to the mid 21st century as of Encounter at Farpoint, TNG had to be a different timeline.

TOS fans understood the Eugenics Wars to be the precursor to WW3, so they just didn’t accept WW3 was going to be another half-century away. Roddenberry’s directive was to always keep the Star Trek future in our future so WW3 had to be shifted to later in time and any specific mention of the date of the Eugenics Wars was avoided.

They also hated the carpet and many other things about the ‘luxury hotel in space’ Enterprise.

Yup, that happened and continued to happen until well into TNG season 3. The brigading Berman-era fans who rail unrelentingly against ‘Nu-Trek’ don’t sound any different, they’re just more visible than the 1980s fans that relied on mimeoed fanzines and Usenet. Fans that liked TNG kept quiet at cons until at least 1990, and vendors didn’t bring TNG merchandise.

I’m not unhappy that Starfleet Academy has been holding back on callbacks of Discovery legacy characters.

As we saw with DS9, sometimes it’s better to let the new characters have some time to establish themselves and settle down before confronting them with former main cast legacies. Otherwise, what’s intended to help a new show get established can sometimes do the opposite.

Can anyone really cite a first season major legacy character appearance that boosted a new show and is considered a strong entry in hindsight?

The only one that comes to mind for me is Riker and Troi’s appearance in ‘Nepenthe’ in season one of Picard.

Have to disagree on Lower Decks.

Longtime fans keep putting forward the inference, based on their knowledge of the franchise, that Lower Decks won’t work for those who don’t get the references.

But the data keeps squashing that hypothesis.

There is a significant group of younger millennials and Zs that got into the franchise via Lower Decks. They’re the target market of viewers of ‘adult animated comedy’ and the format/media rather than the Easter eggs are the hook for them.

On other platforms, you hear a lot from them, as well as from Trek fans who say they got their housemates, BF/GF or siblings into the franchise by watching Lower Decks with them.

If the show weren’t limited to a platform that’s otherwise offering little for their niche, it would have had more success. But Paramount+ just doesn’t have enough in that niche to make it worth subscribing to for them.

Just watched them all as they came out for the most part, after starting somewhere mid season one of TOS. With the reruns, I was soon caught up.

But I always argue strongly that whatever show grabs someone most is the best place to start for them. There’s no ‘best’ way and some of the shows reach different demographics better or worse.

Our teenage kids have never made it through every episode of TOS or Enterprise, and balk at DS9. Each has watched every episode of at least one of the newer shows, but not the same ones. But they find different ones more interesting as they mature.

As much as most of us have long had any remaining interest in a fourth Kelvin movie long exhausted by the endless repetition of hype and failure, there does seem to be more confirmation of significant creative differences on the script that was in development in 2022. He explained that he was hired by Matt Shankman in 2022 to work on preproduction but was fired after a week when the work shut down. > “We were supposed to shoot in the middle of [2022] and it was supposed to come out the following year [2023], but I think a script rewrite went in a different direction.” This aligns with previous comments from Zoe Saldaña that creative issues around the script were a factor in the movie not going ahead.

It’s October, and Trek’s new adorable horror is being unfairly usurped in trendiness by a character who appeared in all of two TOS episodes (even if the grimness of his personal backstory rivals La’an Noonian-Singh’s). So, Moopsy + Kevin memes. . . I dare you.

    Yeoh's S31 movie preproduction complete? https://www.dgc.ca/assets/Uploads/Hotlist1510.pdf

We know from Kurtzman’s messaging at NYCC recently that Michelle Yeoh put her Academy Award star power towards ensue that her Section 31 ‘movie event’ moves forward on Paramount+. Checking in on the Director’s Guild of Canada Ontario round up of information for its members (Hot List), there’s been an interesting update. While ‘Dovercourt’ (working title alias for the direct to streaming movie) still has a bold ‘POSTPONED’ due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, it’s moved from the ‘Preproduction stage’ section of the list to ‘Production.’ What does this suggest? It would seem that the key preproduction production design work in Toronto has been able to be completed since the WGA strike ended. Like SNW, the crews in Toronto are basically ready to go into production once the actors’ strike is settled. Logistically, it’s not entirely clear that both could shoot at the same time as they share some of the same crews, but it is encouraging.

Question - Star Trek Explorer Presents short story collections from Titan Bookstores - are they simply compilations from the magazines or new content?

I’ve been enjoying the very short stories by Treklit authors in the recent issues of Titanbooks Star Trek Explorer magazine. I see that they’re promoting anthologies of short stories, with a new third one due to be released soon. However, it’s not clear if these are just compilations of previously published stories from the magazine, new content or a mix of both. Anyone have the earlier releases?

    NYCC Starfleet Academy confirmation collider.com

StarfleetAcademy ‘will be funny’ according to Alex Kurtzman. He’s also confirmed at the NYCC panel today that the writer’s room is back at work after the WGA strike.
Given the heavier #thriller background (Absentia) of one showrunner Gaia Violo, and youth supernatural CV (TheMagicians; NancyDrew) of Noga Landau the other, sounds as though Tawny Newsome is there to bring some lightness and fun.
I’m really looking forward to seeing more in the 32nd century StarTrek.
I’m also pleading 🙏 let David Cronenberg’s Kovich be involved. I would love so much to have some of The Magicians mysterious vibe with so true humour mixed in. Glad to know that they’re going for something less earnest than the tone of Discovery for this show, it didn’t seem to be working in the Discovery episode with Tilly and the cadets.

October 2023 Star Trek ebook deals https://www.simonandschuster.com/p/star-trek-ebook-deals

Here’s the Simon & Schuster listing of ebook deals for this month. $0.99 in the United States. There’s a heavy focus on TOS Spock focused books, with several classics featured by Diane Diane, AC Crispin and others. There’s also Una McCormack’s excellent Star Trek Picard prequel novel ‘The Last Best Hope.’ Pricing expires on October 29th in the United States. Other countries - deals are available but not necessarily all the same books. And there may be others on low feature prices! How to figure out what deals are available where? Option 1: for UK, Canada, Australia and India, there are links at the bottom of the page that take you to the Simon & Schuster country sites. 1. Go to your country 2. Search for “Star Trek” in the search field 3. Filter by lowest price to highest. Pro. If you’re on the Simon & Schuster page you’ll be offered a free ebook. Con. There are sometimes more books available at the lowest prices through Amazon Kindle and Kobo. And in some cases the full US ebook special list is in effect on other countries’ Amazon, but not on the publisher’s own site. Option 2: go to a major ebook seller for your country 1. Search for “Star Trek” in books 2. Filter by ebooks 3. Filter by either ‘lowest to highest price’ or just by a low maximum price e.g., £ 2 for the UK. This yields a lot of IDW single issue comics as well as novels, but it’s viable. I’ve checked for Canada, Amazon Kindle .ca has the full US list plus a few more. David Mack’s excellent Kelvin Universe book ‘More Beautiful than Death’ is at $CDN 0.99, among others. Enjoy!

As AMPTP comes to the negotiating table with SAG-AFTRA, guild leadership flag differences from WGA concerns https://www.npr.org/2023/10/02/1202858838/the-hollywood-writers-strike-is-over-but-the-actors-strike-could-drag-on-heres-w?

This NPR coverage is interesting. > "A lot of people don't understand how different our demands are from the WGA's demands," Bond said. > Bond said unlike the WGA, the actors union represents many types of performers — actors, dancers, stunt people — each with specific needs that need to be addressed. > Artificial intelligence, for example, is an especially existential threat for background actors, some of whom say they've already had their bodies scanned for reuse. > So Bond said negotiations with the studios' trade association, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) could take a while. > "The AMPTP is just going to use every union busting trick that they have," Bond said.

October is #MakeYourOwnMoopsy Month on Mastodon tenforward.social

Many fediverse fans are exasperated that Paramount has (once again) missed the opportunity to take our money with official tie-in merchandise and left us to our own creations, or non-licensed creators. While it says a lot that fans on a nonmonetizing platform are literally demanding that Paramount get its profit-taking act together, all this Moopsy fan-entitlement is currently being redirected into crafting energy. So MakeYourOwnMoopsyMonth it is. First out of the gate is a charming ceramic Moopsy demonstrating appropriate predatory behaviour on a blue crochet duck. Enjoy.

A conversation about the Gorn with Prof Mohammed Noor of Duke U thescienceof.org

This ScienceOf.org interview with Professor of Genetics/Evolution (& Star Trek biological science advisor) Mohammed Noor on the biology, especially the *r-selection* reproduction, of the Gorn in SNW is marvellous. Just the kind of uncomfortable but great biological thinking I was hoping we’d get into here at Daystrom Institute. e.g. Can we think of the Gorn in viral terms? > Treating Gorn like this, each infected person could infect four more people, so the R0 for Gorn would be 4. Not wildly big, but large enough to do the job. Of course, the hatchlings would also be going after one another, so the analogy’s not perfect. > But if you want to think of the Gorn as intelligent, viral space dinosaurs, that does get the idea across.

/ Film reflects on Oral History of TNG ‘Unification’ Spock appearance www.slashfilm.com

/ Film is continuing to report and opine on key points in the oral history book "The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams," edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross. For those of us who haven’t (yet) invested in the book, these extracts and reflections can prompt some interesting discussion. In this case, it sounds like Nimoy’s hesitation led to a much less action-oriented integration of Spock’s presence. An interesting thought experiment. Also, it sounds like tapping nostalgia and interlinking shows has been a constant pressure from senior executives at the IP holder. It’s well known that Roddenberry resisted close callbacks to TOS, and was determined for TNG to stand on its own in its own era. Even five seasons into TNG, Paramount senior executives though still weren’t convinced it didn’t need a TOS-connection boost. Considering the amount of callback mining and IP nostalgia mining in the current era shows, it seems as though Kurtzman’s got a hard road to convince Paramount to give new characters and eras a chance to stand on their own.

Spotlight on / controversy about corporate manipulation of Rotten Tomatoes www.vulture.com

Leaving aside bias towards the American market and critics, this latest criticism of Rotten Tomatoes influence comes from this September 6th piece from *Vulture*. The report provides new evidence of PR firms paying critics and persuading them to keep negative reviews off of Rotten Tomatoes tracking. > The Bunker 15 employee replied that of course journalists are free to write whatever they like but that “super nice ones (and there are more critics like this than I expected)” often agreed not to publish bad reviews on their usual websites but to instead quarantine them on “a smaller blog that RT never sees. I think it’s a very cool thing to do.” If done right, the trick would help ensure that Rotten Tomatoes logged positive reviews but not negative ones. *[Collider has its own overview and retrospective](https://collider.com/rotten-tomatoes-paid-reviews/)* on previous examples of corruption in reviewing, headlined “Rotten Tomatoes has always been mouldy at its core.’ It notes the inherent vulnerability of RT as it is owned by NBC Universal and Warner Brothers. Collider summarizes the recent criticism and analysis of RT as follows. > THE BIG PICTURE > Rotten Tomatoes' binary system oversimplifies complex works of art and diminishes the role of nuanced film critics. >The recent controversy surrounding Rotten Tomatoes reveals the site's susceptibility to manipulation by PR companies. > The dominance of Rotten Tomatoes in film discourse has led to a diminished appreciation for the human element and individuality in film criticism.
