So Sony wants to punish ISPs for continuing to "allow" illegal things to happen? Hmm remind me again which company it is that has had so many data breaches that users have come to just expect it? Sounds to me like if they are allowed to pursue attacking internet providers then they themselves should start seeing lawsuits for continuing damages until such time as Sony is able to successfully recover all stolen personal data and other parties can no longer use it for profit.

My point is that Trump lies so often that it's easy to forget to actually check on what you're reporting. Like the first piece reported in that article... Yeah if someone sent you just that clip and you see him referring to the wrong State, you might just accept that and post it without looking at the rest of the rally and realizing he was referring to something else. It's easy to forget that Trump isn't always full of shit.

Cool, now do Trump. I want to see a comparison of how many times Trump has lied or misled followers to the number of times the Harris campaign has done this. I think if the numbers are 1:1 we can all agree it's intentional. What if the numbers are 5:1? 10:1? At what ratio do we agree that mistakes were made by overzealous campaign staff? Without comparison numbers, this article is meaningless.

So creating stronger border security to stop drug trafficking is a bad thing? There are still ways for people to cross legally, and what you quoted acknowledges the need to fix immigration policy for allowing citizenship. Whataboutism is when you are comparing two identical issues. What you are doing is ignoring the extreme approach of one party and trying to make it sound like the other party is doing the same thing.. In the US, Trump wants to deport or straight up kill immigrants, Harris is acknowledging that we need to stop the drug traffic while helping supporting immigration. In Palestine ... yeah Biden is sending bombs and he's an ass for that but Harris has at least stated that things need to change. Meanwhile Trump's only statement on the matter is that they need to bomb the Gaza strip and make the problem go away. Do you really thing allowing Trump to get into office will help anyone except rich white people? Stein might have a different approach but under our current voting system there is no possible way she will get elected, so your only honest choice in the matter is voting for someone who has a stated policy of death, or someone who has at least admitted that we can do better.

Well no, the matter at hand is immigrants in the US and how Trump has stated his intent to deport anyone who doesn't look white. Yes the main post is about Palestine but this thread is about local immigration and how Trump plans to bring the terror back home.

You're saying the Democrats, who are welcoming immigrants into sanctuary cities and fighting to protect the rights of legal immigration, are somehow also responsible for fear-mongering about immigrants? That's an interesting take. What do you call it when Republicans are threatening to deport all legal and naturalized immigrants without any concern for the number of generational US citizens they will also deport because they had the wrong skin color?

Hmm I'm seeing a sale price right now, might be based off my order history though. I found another that has a standard price of $10.39, but all the ones I looked at are now also including a shipping cost around $4.50 so that jacks the price up even more.

All these taxes and tarrifs and what-not are really hurting people's ability to get access to affordable items. I was looking at some solar panels right before the US added a tarrif to those items, so now I'll wait to see what happens.

The board costs about $10, I have one on hand. Besides VGA and PS/2 ports, it also has an audio-out jack and a slot for SD cards. And if you want to compare specs, the ESP32 blows this away. Sure $1 sounds impressive, until you realize just how little you can do with it.

[Edit] Looks like the price has come down under $10 for this board now, here's a link to get them from China.

Obviously cars shouldn't be going around hitting pedestrians, and we stop when we're able. My problem is more with the lack of common sense. This dog park I mentioned is out in the country, people are driving their cars to bring their pets here so they obviously have some idea of the time it takes for a car to stop. So why are they walking out from behind a fence and stepping directly into oncoming traffic without at least waiting for vehicle to see them and stop? Yes most people DO take this moment and are able to cross safely, but then you have someone who has no regard for their own safety and acts like they're invincible.

Hard to say for sure. They may have legitimately found something, but my experience with McAfee products has been abysmal. The last time I dealt with it, someone had the full paid version of their virus scanner which was up to date but wasn't finding anything. I ran the free version of AVG and found over 200 items (mostly trojans and other malware). Their research may be valid, but I certainly wouldn't trust any of their software to find even widely-known issues.

I visited London in 2000 and was amazed how well the Tube worked there. At the time I could buy a 1-week pass for around $10US and get everywhere in the city. That's great if you're not going anywhere, but the US is a lot more spread out and many of us don't have a choice about getting jobs in other cities, so it does change the dynamic quite a bit. The other problem is that our transit systems are just not efficient. I can get most places on a bus, but it takes twice as long. I already only have a few hours between the time I get home and when I go to bed, so it feels like quite a sacrifice to give up yet another 90+ minutes of what free time I have. If I worked in the same city and it only took 10-15 minutes to get anywhere via mass transit then yeah, I would have a very different outlook on things.

So yeah, #1 I'm in agreement with to some degree, with caveats for particular situations. For the people where mass transit is suitable, what we have is a disaster through poor planning, poor execution, and outright corruption, and it could be immensely better.

#2... Well maybe. I drove a car for 25 years but now drive an SUV because quite frankly I work on a lot of projects and am constantly grabbing wood or metal supplies. Wednesday I'll be making a couple trips to get some hand-me-down computers for my department which are actually a nice upgrade for what I'll be replacing. Meanwhile I'm also building a new utility trailer this Summer (and again has required picking up a lot of materials) to make it easier to haul those things that don't fit in the SUV. No this doesn't apply for most people, but some of us do actually use these vehicles for their intended purpose. I didn't just go buy the largest obnoxious thing I could find, I picked one that fits in the garage but carries the majority of what I need.

#3... god yes! If you want that sort of off-road vehicle then keep it off road! Otherwise if you want to prove how small your dick is, steroids are cheaper.

#4... I work in a college town, I see kids at every light holding up traffic. Or weaving through traffic on the highway because causing an accident is worth getting one more car ahead.

I see a lot of people who ride bikes or walk around town, and there has been some efforts to add or improve the bike lanes. There have also been some spectacular failures at this, like taking one of the more major streets in town, cutting it down to a single lane so the other lane can be used for bikes with no separation but painted lines, and then gasping in amazement when the number of accidents increases. They did learn though, and now they're moving bike lanes to raised paths so there's some hope. We have a long ways to go to make infrastructure more friendly to other modes of transportation, but it would also help if employers started accepting the fact that a large number of jobs can be work-from-home so they would quit forcing everyone to drive without reason. Maybe some day we'll get there.

You do realize that you're making the false equivalency of a crowd of people walking across the street during a red light and active walk signal to someone blindly walking out in traffic? Are you also going to argue that people walking on a sidewalk in the middle of the block weren't using their brains when a car drives into them?

For the number of times I've almost been run over by bicyclists who can't be bothered to stop or even slow down for red lights when peds have the walk signal -- yeah I don't think so. There are definitely times when drivers are at fault because they're too busy playing on their cell phones or some other distraction, and those people need to be spending more time in jail. But there are also times when pedestrians are at fault. In many cases there is a serious lack of personal responsibility, people who expect everyone else to get out of their way rather than just using their brain. Those are the people I have no sympathy for. But whatever, if you think you can stop a moving car in 20 feet when someone walks out from behind a fence, more power to you.

It's certainly worthwhile to try and make accidents more survivable, but around here we have a much different problem -- entitled pricks who simply walk out into the road (often times in areas where they can't even be seen until the last couple steps) and expect all drivers to immediately stop on a dime because "they have the right-of-way." One such area I drive through to work is by a dog park. There are signs posted to advise drivers to slow down, but at least once a week I see someone walk out from the fenced area directly into the street without even looking (or they literally try to stare down the oncoming traffic while they're walking in front of the vehicles). Funny how nobody has put up any signs at those crosswalks treating pedestrians like small children and reminding them that the law only requires vehicles to stop for pedestrians already in the crosswalk, and they should take personal responsibility and look both ways before crossing the street.

In this case I keep hoping natural selection will resolve the problem, but there seems to be no end to idiots.

That's such a common thing these days that I have to wonder if humans have always had this issue, or if it has anything to do with our modern lifestyles. I was going to do a sleep study at one point, but when I took their questionnaire I checked off no on everything on their list. Then I found out my insurance wouldn't even cover it, and couldn't afford to do the study anyway. Ah well, if I ever get back to a point where I'm having trouble sleeping again then I'll reconsider.

Another suggestion... have you considered if something in particular might be preventing you from getting good sleep? In my case, I've had restless-leg for quite awhile which was managed by doing some stretches before bed as needed. After a really car car accident, that went into overdrive, the stretches made no obvious difference and so I didn't think that was an issue any more, but apparently I was tossing and turning all night. I'd sleep for 9+ hours and wake up a zombie.

After years of this I finally talked to my doctor about it, we discussed a lot of things and I mentioned how I had previous had the problems with my leg pains at night. He decided to try treating this symptom and suddenly I started getting real sleep again. By now it has gotten so bad that if I forget to take my pills at night, my legs absolutely scream at me the moment I lay down in bed. Yeah I'll be on this med the rest of my life, but I'm getting good sleep now and feeling energetic the day.

The point is, your issue may be something you have already dismissed without realize fully how it affects you. When an unknown problem comes up, sometimes you just have to go back and reevaluate everything.

Unfortunately that's not true. I've been running mail servers under my domain since around 2000, almost as long as Microsoft has been running Hotmail, and I was certainly following good standards like SPF and DKIM well before they considered such a thing... and yet Microsoft is the bane of my mail server's existence. Despite no compromises resulting in spam blasts, MS still regularly shuts me out with no reason given and no hits showing on their monitors. If I can find their email address to ask what the problem is, I get a generic "your domain has been cleared" sort of reply but never any reason why they blocked me in the first place.

I think I missed something in your description, but what are you running on your local server? I think most people set up postfix to relay the emails over to gmail or whoever, and there are options in postfix for backwards compatibility with Outlook or even Microsoft Mail so your wife could use whatever client she wants. If you don't have a local mail server set up then this is probably what you want to do. This method allow a local or remote connection from any client so you could run K9 on your phone instead of a VPN.

For opening such a setup to the internet (and allowing access from anywhere), make sure you have strong passwords on your accounts, require SASL authentication, and set up fail2ban to block repeated attempts to hack your mailboxes. Don't run anything else on the same server (or use virtual machines or strong containers) to reduce the chance of your mail server getting compromised other ways, and you should be good to go.

I remember when me and a friend both had C64s and he got a 20MB HDD for it. He said "bring your floppies over and we'll swap software, I have tons of space now!" Big surprise, I had way more floppies than he had drive space. 😆 These days I don't mess around, I have around 105TB of storage with room for expansion as drives get cheaper.

Well I did in fact read the article, and that doesn't answer my question about MASS. The new oxygen is being created from materials that are already on this planet, while some mass is slowly being lost into space. Lost mass means the planet as a whole has a lower gravitational pull. So is that cumulative mass over millions of years enough to account for the moon slowly pulling away, or is that entirely due to the moon's orbit being just slightly faster than the Earth's gravity pulls it back? Which comes back to the original question of whether the accumulation of meteor strikes makes up for the mass of oxygen being lost to space, or if the Earth actually weighs less now than it did say 100 million years ago?

The loss may be slow, but over millions of years wouldn't this add up to a measurable loss in Earth's total mass? Or does that get offset by the introduction of new mass from meteors? We know our moon is slowly drifting away and I just wonder if that could be partly due to the Earth losing mass and therefore its gravitational effect?

Can we get the ten commandments posted in both US houses of Congress?

I would love to have them light up like a scoreboard as each representative takes the floor, showing all of the commandments they have broken. If people want so badly to bring religion into politics then lets just show them exactly who they've been voting for. Maybe we can get the news networks in on this too, displaying it on the side of the screen similar to a sporting event.

Insurrection happening in the Capitol? MTG is such a joke https://twitter.com/RepMTG/status/1737170997831188650

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the bastion of factual information, has once again shown the nature of her character by claiming that peaceful protestors at the Capitol are in fact an "insurrection of terrorists". Don't you see all the violence and mayhem being caused in this video clip? No, me either... If you want to make such bold comparisons, lets start out by checking how many people are running for their lives or the number of deaths involved between these two events. Or maybe we should be asking why MTG thought it was an "honor" to meet with the people responsible for murder and the attempt to destroy our democracy?

Systemd timed out waiting on device, after replacing mdadm drives

I have an annoying problem on my server and google has been of no help. I have two drives mirrored for the OS through mdadm, and I recently replaced them with larger versions through the normal process of replacing one at a time and letting the new drive re-sync, then growing the raids in place. Everything is working as expected, with the exception of systemd... It is filling my logs with messages of timing out while trying to locate both of the old drives that no longer exist. Mdadm itself is perfectly happy with the new storage space and has reported no issues, and since this is a server I can't just blindly reboot it to get systemd to shut the hell up. So what's the solution here? What can I do to make this error message go away? Thanks. [Update] Thanks to everyone who made suggestions below, it looks like I finally found the solution in `systemctl daemon-reload` however there is a lot of other great info provided to help with troubleshooting. I'm still trying to learn the systemd stuff so this has all been greatly appreciated!

What are your tweaks to bring down POST times on new servers?

I've spent the past day working on my newest Poweredge R620 acquisition, and trying to nail down what things I can do without checking. Google has shown me that everyone seems to be having similar issues regardless of brand or model. Gone are the days when a rack server could be fully booted in 90 seconds. A big part of my frustration has been when the USB memory sticks are inserted to get firmware updated before I put this machine in production, easily driving times up to 15-20 minutes just to get to the point where I find out if I have the right combination of BIOS/EUFI boot parameters for each individual drive image. I currently have this machine down to 6:15 before it starts booting the OS, and a good deal of that time is spent sitting here watching it at the beginning, where it says it's testing memory but in fact hasn't actually started that process yet. It's a mystery what exactly it's even doing. At this point I've turned off the lifecycle controller scanning for new hardware, no boot processes on the internal SATA or PCI ports, or from the NICs, memory testing disabled... and I've run out of leads. I don't really see anything else available to turn off sensors and such. I mean it's going to be a fixed server running a bunch of VMs so there's no need for additional cards although some day I may increase the RAM, so I don't really need it to scan for future changes at every boot. Anyway, this all got me thinking... it might be fun to compare notes and see what others have done to improve their boot times, especially if you're also balancing your power usage (since I've read that allowing full CPU power during POST can have a small effect on the time). I'm sure different brands will have different specific techniques, but maybe there's some common areas we can all take advantage of? And sure, ideally our machines would never *need* to reboot, but many people run machines at home only while being used and deal with this issue daily, or want to get back online as quickly as possible after a power outage, so anything helps...

Renaming multiple network interfaces in Bullseye is broken

I have been struggling with this for over a month and still keep running into a brick wall. I am building a new firewall which has six network interfaces, and want to rename them to a known order (wan[0-1], and eth[0-3]). Since Bullseye has stopped honoring udev rules, I have created link files under /etc/systemd/network/ for each interface based on their MAC address. The two WAN interfaces seem to be working reliably but they're not actually plugged into anything yet (this may be an important but untested distinction). What I've found is that I might get the interfaces renamed correctly when logging in from the keyboard, and this continues to work for multiple reboots. However if I SSH into the machine (which of course is my standard method of working on my servers) it seems to destroy systemd's ability to rename the interface on the next boot. I have played around with the order of the link file numbers to ensure the renumbering doesn't have the devices trying to step on each other, but to no avail. Fixing this problem seems to come down to three different solutions... - I can simply `touch` the eth*.link files and I'm back up afte a reboot. - Sometimes I have to get more drastic, actually opening and saving each of the files (without making any changes). WHY these two methods give me different results, I cannot say. - When nothing else works, I simply rename one or more of the eth*.link files, giving them a different numerical order. So far it doesn't seem to matter which of the files I rename, but systemd sees that something has changed and re-reads them. Another piece of information I ran across is that systemd does the interface renaming *very* early in the boot process, even before the filesystems are mounted, and that you need to run `update-initramfs -u` to create a new initrd.img file for grub. OK, sounds reasonable... however I would expect the boot behavior to be identical every time I reboot the machine, and not randomly stop working after I sign in remotely. I've also found that generating a new initrd.img does no good unless I *also* touch or change the link files first, so perhaps this is a false lead. This behavior just completely baffles me. Renaming interfaces based on MAC addresses should be an extremely simple task, and yet systemd is completely failing unless I change the link files every time I remote connect? Surely someone must have found a *reliable* way to change multiple interface names in the years since Bullseye was released? Sorry, I know this is a rant against systemd and this whole *"predictable"* naming scheme, but all of this stuff worked just fine for the last 24 years that I've been running linux servers, it's not something that should require any effort at all to set up. What do I need to change so that systemd does what it is configured to do, and why is something as simple as a remote connection enough to completely break it when I do get it to work? Please help save my sanity! (I realize essential details are missing, but this post is already way too long -- ask what you need and I shall provide!) tl;dr -- Systemd fails to rename network interfaces on the next cycle if I SSH in and type 'reboot'

    Self-hosted captcha for matrix-synapse registrations?

I have a self-hosted matrix-synapse server up and running on a Debian linux server, but before I open it up I want to at least get a captcha service in place to reduce spamming. The only module I've seen to handle this function appears to require setting up a Google recaptcha though, however I would prefer to keep all of this entirely self-contained for the privacy of my users. Can anyone recommend a module that allows for a local captcha option? For that matter, can anyone also recommend a captcha system that is pretty straightforward to set up (which is compatible with matrix-synapse) and uses basic preinstalled code bases like perl or python? And while I'm here, I would also like to provide the option of registering with an email address, but I'm having trouble finding any clear how-to pages on this. Seems like that function might be built directly in to matrix-synapse but I'm just not finding anything helpful. Any suggestions? I'm fairly new to matrix in general, but I have an initial setup running with the homeserver, Element web page, and an IRC bridge, so if I can just nail down the validation part of registrations I'll have what I think is a good starting point to launch from.

Just a random thought, but has this been proposed before?

I was reading another article which discussed taking measurements of distance stars at 6-month intervals to create a 3D map of their relative positions and direction of movement. This got me to thinking... has anyone proposed 'dropping' stationary satellites outside of Earth's orbital path for continuous monitoring even when our planet is no longer in that spot? It seems like such an arrangement could provide constant monitoring of things that are happening on the far side of the sun, and they could each act as a relay to each other, bringing the signals back around where we could receive them. It could be fascinating to be able to constantly monitor the path of know comets, or perhaps even to detect large meteors which are safely away from us now but might some day pose a threat. Studies like mapping star positions could rapidly expand with the availability of continuous data feeds, and I'm sure if such a tool were available scientists would come up with a host of new experiments to try. A couple other things also come to mind. First off is radio telescopes, which can gather more sensitive data by having sensors further apart. Of course in this case they would only be able to peer in two directions unless you set up the array to rotate as a singular ring (which greatly increases the complexity). The other idea was that I know some phenomena are so large that it takes a huge array of telescopes or sensors to even detect them, and something this large could detect truly astounding low frequency events. Throw in some gravity detectors and watch as the waves propagate through our solar system. I'm just thinking there's a lot of possibilities here and a lot more data could be collected if we could drop four or eight satellites along the way. I would assume the idea has been proposed before, I just didn't know if this is even feasible?

    Bullseye missing the startup messages

I've been running systems up to Buster and have always had the 'quiet' option in the grub settings to show the regular service startup messages (the colored ones showing [ok] and such but not all the dmesg stuff). I just upgraded a server to bullseye and there are zero messages being displayed now except an immediate message about not being able to use IRQ 0. Worse, google can't seem to find any information on this. If I remove the quiet option from grub then I see those service messages again, along with all the other stuff I don't need. What is broken and how do I fix this issue? I assumed it would be safe to upgrade by now but this seems like a pretty big problem if I ever need to troubleshoot a system. [Edit] In case anyone else finds this post searching for the same issue… Apparently the trick is that now you MUST install plymouth, even on systems that do not have a desktop environment. For whatever reason plymouth has taken over the job of displaying the text startup messages now. Keep your same grub boot parameters (quiet by itself, without the splash option) and you will get the old format of startup messages showing once again. It’s been working fine the old way for 20+ years but hey let’s change something just for the sake of confusing everyone. [Edit 2] Thanks to marvin below, I now have a final solution that no longer requires plymouth to be installed. Edit /etc/default/grub and add `systemd.show_status=true` to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. In my case to full line is: `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet systemd.show_status=true"` Don't forget to run `update-grub` after you save your changes.

Any recommendations of countries to block from server logins?

I run my own email server, and a friend received a compromised laptop from work which resulted in a spam attack from Russia yesterday. Turtle settings saved the days with thousands of emails still in the queue when I saw the problem, however it made me realize that everyone with accounts on my server are local, do not travel, and have no requirement to send emails from outside the country. I found how to use the smtpd_discard_ehlo_keyword_address_maps setting in postfix to block a CIDR list of IPs, then found a maintained list of IPs by country codes on github. Cool so far, and a script to keep my local list updated was easy enough. Now the question is, what countries should I be blocking? There are plenty of lists of the top hacking sources, but it's hard to block #2 (the US) when that's where I am located. But otherwise, does anyone have a list of countries they outright block from logging on to their servers? From the above google searches I have 17 countries blocked so far, and in the first 30 minutes already stopped login attempts from three of those countries, so it appears to be working. Of course I could write a script to parse my logs to see who has already made attempts, but that's what services like fail2ban are for, and I'm just wondering if there are any countries in particular I should directly block? My list so far includes the following: ae bg br cn de hk id in ir iq il kp ng ru sa th vn The question itself may not be that interesting, but I thought at the very least some folks might be interested in my experience and think about doing something similar themselves. I can post more details of what I did if there is any interest.

    My first pink oyster pins!

First pics of my first pins. I cut slits in the bag on Sunday and saw the first pins appear yesterday morning, now they're growing fast. This clump is already a full inch (25mm) tall, and I have four openings in the bag that are all pinning. I've been misting them a couple times a day but now I'll be working from home until next Monday so I can try to spray them more often. For anyone who hasn't seen my previous posts, I started out with a very small sample of spawn from ebay just over two months ago. I expanded that out in jars of rye berries and popcorn kernels, and then on July 4th I split a jar between two fruiting bags with pasteurized straw (I also have two bags of blue oysters and opened one of those on Sunday, but no pins from it yet). This is my first time trying to grow mushrooms so I've been researching and asking questions every step of the way, but so far so good! I also have never tasted oysters before so that will be a new experience too. Now I just have to temper my impatience until it's time to harvest... [Update] Adding a second pic this morning. This is about 12 hours later and they've grown significantly again. For reference, the bag is about the size of a sheet of paper. ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/c77fac9d-4b08-4c3d-8517-4233dff60640.jpeg) ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/da93a579-a155-4b14-90c9-d36521d5f045.jpeg) [2nd update] It's been five days now since I opened the bag for fruiting. Here's a pic of what the mushrooms currently look like. As far as what I've read, I expected them to get MUCH larger than this, but with the upturned caps I really believe these are done growing and should have been harvested yesterday (note this image shows the largest clump of the group). Any thoughts? ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/36d4f7b4-2d9c-49d5-92c9-be8d209a3213.jpeg)

A question about low-tech humidity control

My first oyster pins appeared today and I've been thinking about humidity control. I have this big tub I made my still air box from and I've been wondering about using it to hold the two fruiting bags I have. I was concerned that maybe the X slices wouldn't get enough fresh air if I covered them, but then I've been worried about keeping up the humidity. Now that I'm seeing some pinning though I'm feeling like the humidity is more important? I live in Colorado, which isn't quite desert but the humidity in the house typically drops below 40% during the day (it's high right now because we've been getting some rain showers). For reference, my SAB is a typical DIY, made from a large tub with just a couple hand-sized holes cut out. There's not a lot of airflow in that room anyway, and I'm not sure how much fresh air the mushrooms need once they start growing. Of course I realize they won't be able to stay in the SAB too long, I know they'll outgrow the available space, but I'm just thinking for the next few days, or however long it takes them to really fill in. So, any thought on this? Should I close them up in the box or just leave them in open air?

Openfire chat missing features when clients log in to multiple devices under the same account

I have Openfire set up with the monitoring service plugin which we have been using with Pidgin on the desktop. One of the things I've noticed is that when I sign in to another computer on the same account, I do not get a history of recent messages (which I thought the monitoring plugin was supposed to provide). The other thing that doesn't seem to be working right is when I am logged in to two computers simultaneously (using the same account). I expect to see chat messages showing up on BOTH devices so I can go between machines, which again is something I thought the monitoring plug was supposed to provide. The settings I believe are related are under "Offline messages" which I have set to always store, and retain for up to 30 days. Should I bee looking for anything else? I have been using Pidgin with XMPP on Google for years, so I know both the XMPP protocol and the Pidgin client are capable of handling this functionality. I've been digging around trying to find a solution, and see a lot of things claiming Pidgin is the culprit here, but those messages are a decade old. I can't seem to find any information on the subject for Openfire newer than about 2016. I'm hoping there's a setting I need to change or another plugin I need to add to get both of these features working on my server? I really love the software otherwise but this seems like a really basic function that should just work, and I am hoping someone can point me to whatever I'm missing.

Pinning behind the air filter in fruiting bags?

So my two bags of pink oysters, which haven't appeared to be doing much on anything, have suddenly pinned right behind the air vent on both bags. The first picture is a bunch of little guys like I expected it to start out as, but the second bag is one massive stem as wide as the cap! For reference, the air vent patch black clicks on these bags are about 1.25" wide. Did I do something wrong in sealing the top of the bags, or is it common to see this happen right behind the vent? Maybe I put too much straw in the bags? It's hard to see in the pictures, but they seem pretty healthy, however there has been VERY little mycelial growth in these bags so far and it seems premature to start opening them up. A question about the color of pink oyster spawn https://sourpuss.net/projects/mycology/2023-07-16/IMG_7158.JPG

I have some pink spawn which was being expanded out in jars of rye berries and popcorn kernels. There's been good growth and since a couple weeks ago the jar appeared to be completely colonized (at which time I left one jar sitting and moved another jar to a couple fruiting bags). It's been sitting on the basement floor since then, but I've noticed some pink coloration that seems to have gone throughout the jar, and there seems to be a bit of the pink also in the fruiting bags. I prepared some jars of blue oyster spawn at the same time, using the same batch of rye and popcorn, and those jars are still snow white. This has me wondering, could I have possibly gotten contamination ONLY in the pink oyster jars while all of the blue oyster jars somehow escaped contamination? Or is this pink color natural for pink oysters? It just seems like an awful big coincidence that only the pink oysters would get contaminated when everything was prepped together in the still-air box and there was definitely cross-exposure between the jars. Since this is my first batch of oysters I'm just not sure what I should be expecting. ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/8aeab3ea-9072-4d66-bb9a-78c002cfd7b2.jpeg)

What the heck -- my popcorn is sprouting???

At the suggestion of another member I tried expanding my spawn on popcorn kernels. This involved boiling for about 20 minutes, drying, then pressure-canning for 90 minutes at 15psi. After cooling my spawn was divided between the jars, which were allowed to grow for a little over two weeks. On Monday I transferred the contents of a couple jars to fruiting bags with pasteurized straw and started seeing growth by the next day. I thought all was well. On Wednesday, I started noticing some green stems. As I've been watching, this is actually growth from the popcorn kernels, and it's happening in all four bags! Now I'm quite frankly amazed that the cheapest generic popcorn from the store even has the capability to sprout, but after I put it through all that cooking I would have assumed it simply wasn't possible. I also wonder why it didn't start trying to grow in the original jar, and why it waited until it was in the bags? So is there anything I should do about this? It will probably be at least another couple weeks before the mycelium is grown out enough to open some air holes for fruiting and I'm worried the corn will be trying to create its own holes before then, but maybe the bag is tougher than it looks. Anyway, any suggestions other than letting it go and waiting to see what happens? tl;dr: Spawn grown on popcorn kernels, now popcorn is sprouting despite extensive cooking. ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/e8d96873-d5aa-4299-b5d7-f3ebabf75a6c.jpeg) [Update] It's NOT the popcorn, there were other seeds in the straw!

Progress update - here's hoping I got it right

I've lost track now of how long since I started on this, but I think it's been 2-3 weeks since I transferred my original spawn to grain jars? All of the jars have been fully colonized except for one jar of pink oysters, which fought against some kind of contamination but seems to have gotten going again. It had some good looking growth though, so I decided to use that jar plus one jar of blue oysters (but grown on popcorn kernels) for my first attempt at fruiting. If it is too weak and fails, well if was worth a shot and I wouldn't have gotten anything else from it anyway. I'm using some 8" fruiting bags from ebay, and pasteurized chopped straw in a lime water bath overnight then let it drain today for about 2.5 hours. Each quart jar of spawn was split between two fruiting bags. Now here comes the scary part... I didn't have room inside to work on this, and knew working with the straw was going to be very messy, so I set up a table in the yard. I wiped everything down with 91% ISO as I went, but being outside has me worried about the chances of contam. Guess we'll see? So now I have four stuffed fruiting bags hanging out in the garage where it will be a little warmer than the basement. I had considered putting the bags in my garden but I'm worried about squirrels and such getting into them (especially when they start to fruit) so I figured the garage was safer. I'm expecting another 2-3 weeks of expansion before they're ready to fruit, but it's just a game of wait&see now. And assuming I get some mushrooms from this batch, I can bring it back full-circle and start a new batch of spawn (this time directly in the grain jars) from what grows. One question I have for everyone... I have three more jars of spawn that are pretty well completely grown in (one popcorn and two rye berries). Should I put these in the refrigerator until I'm ready to transfer them to fruiting bags? I'm not sure how long they can survive at room temperature but I seem to recall they can hang out in the fridge for 3-4 months without any problem?

Anyone else getting vehicle damage from all the potholes?

Usually we see some potholes at the end of the snow season which get repaired fairly quickly... but this year... oh boy. Seems like they didn't start showing up until all the rain hit, and then they were everywhere, and so far I've seen very few getting fixed (and some that were fixed have opened up again). My SUV has been pulling hard to the right the last few weeks. I finally got a chance to jack it up today, checked the wheel bearings and A-frames as the common culprits. Instead what I found is the lower A-frame has actually been pulled over on one side by nearly 1/2". I moved it back to roughly where it's supposed to be so I'm not tearing up my tire until I can get in for a proper alignment, but sheesh, could we maybe get some crews out to start patching the worst of the potholes at least? Usually our fair city is so quick on getting these things fixed!

A bit of grain jar spawn pr0n https://sourpuss.net/projects/mycology/2023-06-17/IMG_6884.JPG

It's not much to look at yet, but my oyster spawn is doing nicely after only four days. I picked up some spawn off ebay for pink and blue oysters, not realizing just how tiny an amount 10g really was. Well I had already been reading about expanding spawn in grain jars, and was advised here to also try popcorn kernels in addition to the rye berries I had already ordered. I got seven jars cooked and sterilized last weekend and did the transfer in a still air box on Tuesday. What you are seeing in the pic below is the blue oyster spawn, of which the 10g was divided between three jars (the third one not pictured is another popcorn jar), so there was very little to start with in each jar. I'd say it's pretty happy though! Once these jars are fully colonized I will be pasteurizing chopped straw in a cold water lime bath to set up my fruiting bags. I'm going to try splitting one jar of spawn between two fruiting bags to see how that goes. I know it's a bit thin, but obviously I'm in no big hurry and can wait for the fruiting bags to colonize. Anyway, hope you enjoy the pic... ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/485be8cf-cd5d-44b2-9148-a27b06992ffa.jpeg)

An experiment in growing my own mushrooms - Three weeks later

I thought some folks might want to see an update on what I've been growing. For reference, I tried to grown button mushroom spawn on boiled cardboard, only to learn a few days later that this shouldn't be possible. Imagine my surprise when the mycelium started growing anyway! So it's been about three weeks now and growth has been painfully slow, but then again they didn't really have any decent food. I also realized when I opened the container that there was still way too much moisture in the cardboard. Today I transferred what I could into grain jars to give it a better chance at growth. Basically I went through all the layers and peeled the cardboard apart, then tore off smaller chunks of anything that had decent growth on it. This was divided between a jar of popcorn kernels and a jar of rye berries, so I have a good chance of one or both jars really expanding the small amount of spawn I had available. Considering this was started from chopped stems I got at the grocery store, I'd say I'm doing pretty good so far! I've started doing some reading on how to make the pasteurized compost for this type of mushroom, hoping to start picking up supplies next weekend to get it ready. ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/c860eb08-5d21-4ba8-8c72-edba52f84114.jpeg)

Anyone else seeing posts from unrelated communities showing in your feed when you're reading a specific community?

I just started noticing this happen today. For example I was reading posts in the mycology community and posts from comics started appearing at the top of the page. I'm assuming this is a bug but is there anything I can do about it from my end, or do I just have to wait for the next update? FYI I'm just on the desktop browser, not using any apps.

Popcorn spawn - Are these white spots of concern? https://sourpuss.net/projects/mycology/2023-06-17/IMG_6885.JPG

Four days ago I added some purchased oyster spawn to five jars containing popcorn or rye (after sterilizing of course). The next day I noticed these white spots on the kernels of only one jar. For reference, the pink oyster spawn in this jar was also added to a jar of rye, and there is no sign of these spots in that jar, so I believe the spawn itself was fine. Transfer was done in a still-air box, and this wasn't even the last jar I did, so I'm not really sure if it is contam or not? One thing that strikes me (and I'm not sure if you can see the detail in this pic), I have seen white spots like this on sweet corn, which I believe is also a fungus, but the popcorn kernels were boiled for 20 minutes, dried for a couple hours, then put in a pressure cooker for 90 minutes at 15psi, so I don't know how any fungus would have remained in the jars? Regardless, I was wondering if anyone had seen something like this before, and if the jar is likely a loss? The oyster spawn is actually growing growing, you can see one cluster starting right in the center, and it seems like it's cleaning the kernels that it expands to? This is my first time trying to expand spawn so I thought I'd ask for opinions on this... ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/81a67626-7bfa-44f7-b119-5b168380eb30.jpeg)

Fungi seem to 'sweat' to stay cool and scientists don't know why www.livescience.com

cross-posted from: https://beehaw.org/post/581212 > I had many expectations for today, but learning that mushrooms sweat wasn't one of them. > > > The scientists are still unsure why fungi might want to keep cool. > > > In their paper, the authors speculate that it might have something to do with creating optimal conditions for spore formation, or it may help fungi spread their spores — by altering the temperature, they might be causing tiny winds that can blow the spores around. > > > It’s also possible that this phenomenon is due to something else entirely. For example, evapotranspiration also increases humidity, and when asked if it’s possible that the fungi are trying to keep humid, and the cooling is simply a by-product, Casadevall said it was conceivable.

    Hooray another fungus amongus!

I love seeing these groups pop up everywhere! They are such a fantastic resource to help prevent deadly mistakes, but also great for learning more about the incredible variety of mushrooms all around us, many of which are too tiny to casually notice but contain such beauty. As a kid I would hunt morels with my grandpa and that probably inspired me to keep my eyes open. Several years ago I had some huge mushrooms pop up in my yard, and after getting a positive ID I fried them up and ate them. Sometimes you just get lucky with what the squirrels drag into your yard. Now I've finally taken the next step to growing my own, and yesterday transferred my first starts of oyster mushrooms to grain jars. I also managed to start some cremini spawn on boiled cardboard, and just giving it a little more time before transferring that to grain jars as well. Can't wait to taste all the results!

Just a reminder, if you can't see a community from your lemmy instance

Like Mastodon, Lemmy is a federated group of servers, however in order for a server (also known as an 'instance') to be aware of content from another instance, someone has to let that server know the community exists... In my case, my home is on mander.xyz. If I go to the communities tab and search for Longmont, nothing comes up. From the post on reddit I knew that the home of this group is at "https://lemmy.ml/c/longmont" so I simply put that whole string in the community search, and that tells my server of its existence. Then I can immediately go back and search for "Longmont" again, and now the group shows up and allows me to subscribe to it. And of course this works for any other communities you are interested in, but which aren't hosted on the Lemmy server you have an account with. Once you or someone else on your server has subscribed to a community, anyone else on your server will also now immediately see that community without needing the full path.

Feature-request: Sorting the list of communities

Currently the list of communities in the sidebar are sorted alphabetically, however the ones beginning with lower-case letters are sorted to the bottom of the list. Would it be possible to get that fixed so that the list is sorted *without* being case-sensitive? I realize it's a pretty minor thing in the broad scope of everything that's currently happening with Lemmy but I thought I would ask.

An experiment in growing my own mushrooms

I've been posting this on reddit, so forgive me if you've already read about it... I have long had an interest in trying to grow my own mushrooms, but recently started doing a lot of reading to learn the process. I had intended to start out growing a couple types of oysters on cut straw, but while I was collecting supplies and waited for spawn to arrive I ran across an article talking about cutting up clean cardboard, boiling it to sterilize, and seeding it with chopped mushroom stems. I figured this would be a great way to practice and see how much contamination I would get. Besides the oysters, I wanted to also try cremini/button mushrooms. One of the local grocery stores has them in a bulk bin which appears to not be processed, and it allowed me to pick out some that looked like they came straight from the ground with obvious signs on mycelium still on the base. Great! So I set everything up, drilled some air holes in a small food container, added the cardboard and stems, and put it away in the closet. And then a couple days later I read that creminis actually want a rich mixture of manure and/or grain to grow on. Well crap... The point was still to watch for contamination though, so I let it continue. A week passed without contamination and I was happy that it appeared I had cleaned things pretty well (and we're talking a very hasty setup on my kitchen countertop in open air). On Sunday, I spotted some white fuzz. Oh boy, this could be it, the experiment is almost over. But then I checked on Monday... and it's not just fuzz, I have actual STRANDS growing across the cardboard. Could it be?!? Well, today it's still looking pretty promising, and I'm seeing more coming out from various points in the cardboard. It's hard to get a good look at everything because of the humidity, but today is day 12 since I set up the container and there are no greens, blues, or reds anywhere. I am hopeful, although frankly amazed at what seems to be happening. In the meantime my oyster spawn arrived but it was less than expected so I have picked up some quart jars and am waiting to receive some rye grain. I have blue and pink oyster spawn which I will split between two jars each to expand before trying to move it to grow bags with straw. It will take a little longer than planned but I'll get there. And I'm waiting for my container to be fully colonized with the unexpected spawn (or to see a definite sign that it is NOT mycelium) and then I'll get that transferred to a grain jar as well. However it goes, I'm having fun!

Trouble connecting to communities at lemmy.ml

I'm trying to transfer my subscriptions from lemmy.ml over to a new account here, but the community search is failing to find most of those subs. For example: comics, esp32, selfhost, and datahoarder. Even if I try reaching the url directly (https://mander.xyz/c/homeserver@lemmy.ml) I get a "404: couldnt_find_community" error. Are these communities blocked from Mander for some reason?
