Hell Mode: Volume 7 - I find myself skipping entire pages whenever the book goes on and on about skill/summon composition of the cast. It has become feeling stale even though the story itself is progressing steadily. I also cannot really connect with any of the characters. In one of the last chapters, there is a side story from the POV of a side character and in those few pages, I already care more about that character than the 8 from the main cast. - 4/10
Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World: Volume 8 - There are portions of beautiful prose and great world-building whenever the author isn't beating the TTRPG schtick to death. I hope the series will develop like Overlord where the gimmick gets used less and less as the story takes more center stage. Also Margit. Extra points for Margit. The two new party members could be annoying since they are trope-y but the book and MC acknowledge that they are literal walking tropes and that makes all the difference. - Great volume 8/10

Hey everyone. What seems to have been established itself as the main anime related instance, ani.social, has been defederated from Lemmy.ml. I am wondering if it would be better to move this community over there so I will copy my posts in ani.social for a while as well and then see where more engagement is happening. I have to look up my cliffs notes about Death’s Daughter I posted here (btw. posting here weekly what I’ve read is great when I have to remember what I thought about a series - I highly recommend doing this wink wink) but I think I remember that I felt that the main character was very flip-floppy with her personality. If the author wanted to push in a certain direction the MC was dumb like a piece of bread and the next moment she was super attentive. Very inconsistent. Apothecary Diaries is great though, so I recommend starting with that.

The Retired Demon of the Maxed-Out Village: Volume 2 - Managed to finish this volume. I liked the first one well enough but this time it was a drag to read through. The series seems to follow an approach where it revolves around the story of a different visitor to the village in each volume. The visitor in this volume didn't do it for me at all. I really couldn't care less about whether she lived or died and that made it so sluggish to read. The people I wanted to read about were just set dressing with very little screen time (word time? page time?). I'm not sure if I continue this series. - 3/10

My move is mostly done but I'm still not finished with Like a Dragon 8 and Persona3Reload is also on deck. Who knows when I find the time to give them a read.

Record of Wortenia War: Volume 13 - Every now and again I pick up a series again that I dropped previously. I don’t remember much about what had happened in the first twelve volumes but this one was almost in its entirety an unmitigated information dump about the political state of the isekai continent. There was little to no story progression whatsoever to which I could latch on to jog my memory. It was honestly just an entire volume of the history of several kingdoms and empires. And it read just as boring as an actual history book. I guess this is aimed at history otaku who know every name of every soldier who ever fought in the warring state period of Japan, but to me this was boring and it took me the entire week to get through it even though I was starved for distraction due to being without internet for a good chunk of the week. There was also that strange thing where you are in the POV of a isekai world native and the exposition dump sets in again and suddenly the explanation takes comparison to Earth states/events. Sorry, I know this is an info dump, but weren’t we in the POV of a fantasy character? At least keep the exposition in the general confines of what the character would know. Really jarring to read. Can’t give this volume more than a 1/10 because literally nothing happens after the first short encounter in the beginning. It's just plain boring to read and all the facts are forgotten two paragraphs later anyway. I'm not sure if this was why I dropped it in the first place or not, but I at least recall some story elements from the series. Maybe I give a few chapters of volume 14 a go and see if this was just a filler volume.

I often compare Cooking With Wild Game to Bookworm. In both series the isekai MC has zero powers apart from their knowledge that they brought with them. And not knowledge in the sense of “I’ve seen a gun in TV and games and I am suddenly able to recreate them without a problem”. Just like Myne in Bookworm has to painfully R&D the creation of paper, the MC in Cooking With Wild Game has to try to recreate recipes with isekai resources.
Another similarity is how the series both start with low-stakes, small-scale problems but slowly build up to become bigger and involving the lives of more people. Both also at the very core stories about class divides.
Where they differ is who carries the series. In Bookworm it’s Myne the main character. She is clearly the MVP of the books. In Wild Game it’s the side characters around the MC that are carrying.

I agree with Making Magic lacking a through line in the form of an overarching plot. I’ve come to think of it as completely separate stories with the little bit of overarching story as just the set dressing / part of the world building instead.
I’m in the mood for some kingdom building (maybe because I’m currently building my personal little kingdom here at the moment) and I’ll put Only the Villainous Lord on my plan to read list.

A Late-Start Tamer’s Laid-Back Life: Volume 8 - This time with penguins. I still feel a bit fatigued from the last copy and paste 4 times arc, but it looks like it's getting better. - 6/10
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 5 Avatar of a Goddess Volume 8 - Each and every volume is better than the last. I gave that incredible P5V7 an 11/10 and in all fairness, this one has to get a 12/10 now. I'm ready for a 13/10 volume next. Btw. is anyone else hyped to see Lessy animated by Studio WIT?
edit : The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage’s Carefree Life in Another World: Volume 1 - Found the worst LN I've ever started to read. I'm only 2 chapters in but I can already tell that this really has no redeeming qualities. I can't imagine how a LN could even be any worse. Maybe if it bricked your tablet. Wow, this one is really terrible on so many levels that I can't even begin to list all the faults in the first two chapters. And right after reading Bookworm P5V8. Talk about whiplash.

Thank you. There are no problems with the move itself since I hired a firm to do this for me. So I can look forward to the new place without the stress that usually comes with a move. The Magician Who Rose From Failure: Volume 6 - The series has an interesting magic system which was always a standout, but in this volume, the author appears to have lost every creativity because it this volume is the most generic and trope-filled magic academy arc I’ve read in a long time. Complete with haughty-ringlets-student-council-noble-girl looking down on MC and forcing a duel with expulsion on the line. - 5/10
Tearmoon Empire: Volume 11 - I used to love this series. It was my second favorite LN only after Bookworm, but since the translator change it lost most of its charm and wit. And in this volume, it even uses anachronisms like “meme” in a fantasy setting. And not even in narration but in dialogue. I’ll give it two more volumes until Mia becomes Picklemia sticking out her gyatt for the Pepefrog. Another example would be “… Mia and her crew ...”. Before it would have been something like “… Mia and her retinue …” or something more fitting to the setting. But now it’s “crew”. Another character said “nope”. There are a lot more examples. The entire prose changed into something you would rather expect in Twitter thread. It could have been one of the all-time greats but thanks to the translator change it became mid at best. It’s really so saddening to see something you love get turned into shit. - 5/10

The Deer King, Vol. 1: Survivors - Interesting world building and the prose reads more like a “regular” fantasy novel in the way it is written in a way that needs more attention to follow along than your typical LN. The pro of this is that it’s missing all the usual LN tropes. The series is divided by two separate protagonists and switching their POVs every chapter. And quite frankly, I was completely uninterested by one of the protagonists and towards the end I just started to only skim his chapters. So for me there was only part of the book worth reading and that part was even a lot smaller than the second POV. - 2/10.
Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools Volume 8 - What the series does really well in the latest few volumes (and Lucia) is telling a emotional story about side characters. Dahlia and Volf take a step back and become story vehicles for the people around them. In this volume it’s an elderly veteran captain of the Beast Hunter Order that gets a magical prosthetic made by Dahlia and how this changes his life. The author is very good at making one care for a side character in a short time. This veteran for example wasn’t introduced until this volume but by the end I felt tear up (in a good way) by his story. I like this step back from the main couple approach the series has shifted to. It will probably be a hard balancing act going forward to not forget to advance Dahlia’s relationship as well, but I’m happy with how it turned out so far. - 8/10

Making Magic: The Sweet Life of a Witch Who Knows an Infinite MP Loophole Volume 5 - This volume the Witch gets a new apprentice. The series stays pretty constant and comfy. - 6.5/10
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash Vol. 5 - It's not bad but its starting to get really boring, even though I usually like slow-paced stories. But here there really isn't anything happening at all. - 5/10

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody, Vol. 20 - The series is still one of my favorite guilty pleasures. There is just something about it that makes everything that I hate with a passion everywhere else thoroughly enjoyable here. I can’t really put my finger on why I like the power fantasy here. - 7/10

No worries. The term "light novel" usually refers to a type of "popular literature novel native to Japan" to steal the definition from Wikipedia. I highly recommend giving them a try if you interested in light reading material. They are mostly very entertaining even if my weekly reviews here sound as if I'm only picking on them ;)

Yes, absolutely. That's why I especially pointed out that MC isn't dumb like many other MCs - just a bit simple. It's just that for my taste I would prefer MC a bit less simple. He doesn't need to be a genius, but :
::: spoiler spoiler if he at least had at least recognized that something wasn't right with the Kingdom officials just dropping him off in the grasslands without anything, I would have been able to emphasize more with MC. No need to outwit the officials, but at least realizing that he is getting like being screwed would have gone a long way. His soldier background could have been the reason why he wouldn't speak up and just accepted his fate in that case. :::
Well, that's just an example. Like I said, I like the first volume, but I hope MC wises up somewhat going forward.

I found that the entire arc beginning with volume 2 was very tiring for my taste but I enjoyed the last volume where arc 3 begins. But slugging though 3 or 4 volumes just to get to some better ones later on is a hard ask. I am just a die-hard Margit fan so I managed to power through the 2nd arc to get back to her.
I'm not sure what you mean by "dominate MC" but there is only one love interest in the series (so far no harem plot in sight - knock on wood).

In the chapter “1.0 handerson” (last chapter) we got a plot hook but I expected something more akin to Turning Point from Mushoku Tensei.
Just a heads up: The 1.0 Hendersons chapters at the end of each volume are "alternate universe" type of chapters that aren't canon to the main story and stand completely alone (i.e. whatever plot hook there was for you, it's not going to build upon in the 1.0 Hendersons chapter of the next volume).

So You Want to Live the Slow Life? A Guide to Life in the Beastly Wilds, Vol. 3 - Ah yes, the textbook about preserves that mimics as a light novel. Not gonna lie, the actual amount of plot in this volume wouldn't fill more than maybe one chapter. All the rest is an endless essay about cooking/preservation food. The setting of the series is endearing and I like the sidekicks, but the actual plot is thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread as a famous Hobbit would say. - 5/10
Taking My Reincarnation One Step at a Time: No One Told Me There Would Be Monsters! Volume 3 - A good volume. The series seems to have found its stride. The annoyances I had in the last volumes are mostly gone and a character that I didn't like was also written out after half the volume. - 7/10
The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects: Volume 1 - Interesting first volume. There are definitive red flags with a middle-aged man marrying a 15-year-old girl at the forefront. I give it a tentative pass for the moment though because the girl in question is written like an adult woman in both her personality and actions. It reads like this was written as a normal story between two adults and then someone decided in order to sell it to the Japanese light novel crowd they just had to spice it up. Something like an editor saying "Just throw in a line or two that she is 15, no need to change anything else, and we will sell 10 times as much, muhahahaha". Another criticism I have is that the protagonist is a bit too simple for my taste. But at least he isn't dumb and oblivious like so many LN/anime protags. Anyway, the setting of the story is the interesting part. There is an emphasis on non-standard cultures within a standard fantasy setting in the form of a nomadic Oni tribe. Something that I really enjoy in Coking With Wild Game for example. And there is a bit other demi-human cultures as well. Hopefully there is more of that in future volumes. - 7/10

Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord: Production Magic Turns a Nameless Village into the Strongest Fortified City Vol. 1 - God-awful writing. Here's an example from the prologue: “Esparda and Till, the butler and your maid, have been coming to me to gush about your progress for some time now.” That's one brother saying this to the other. Why exactly would Brother A need to point out who Esparda and Till are to Brother B when talking about B's own butler and maid? It's amateurish exposition writing. Once the exposition is out of the way it gets entertaining enough, so it’s not all bad. There are some more nitpicks I have, like some plot threads being set up but seemingly just forgotten half a chapter later, but I reserve my opinion on those until the next volume. Maybe it’s just setup for later, even though the rest of the writing doesn’t seem to have much forethought. Every hurdle that gets introduced gets resolved in the same chapter. - 4/10
Magic Stone Gourmet: Eating Magical Power Made Me the Strongest Volume 3 - The strange fluctuating power dynamics are continuing from the last volume. The whole magic-stone-eating schtick seems to be mostly forgotten as well. Guess the author didn't really think further ahead than the first two volumes when naming the series. The plot structure is also terribly predictable. Imagine a mystery movie where a murdered person is found by the detective and their sidekick. The very next moment there is a haughty noble introduced to the scene by having the noble gabbing sidekick's boobs and spitting on the detective for being a commoner. Then add one hour of pointless filler just to have the detective get some deus-ex-machina epiphany about how it was the haughty noble all along at the end. It's that type of plot. - 4/10
Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement 3 - More FUNA. Everything by FUNA is really the same but I find it entertaining enough when going at it with the right mindset. - 6/10

A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans, Vol. 1 - Sigh... A 29-year-old virgin with the defeatist mindset dialed up to elven, who gets flustered the second a girl talks or even looks to him becomes the homeroom teacher of a classroom of animal girls. Hijinx ensues while he is totally not lusting after his students. Each chapter features a different girl and the specific problem she has to solve. There is nothing that feels like it would connect the chapters to each other. No update on how Girl A is doing in a chapter of Girl B. - 4/10
To Another World... with Land Mines! Volume 8 - Not much to say about this one. This volume was a drawn out dungeon crawl but the addition of the two new party members made it actually quite entertaining to read. It wouldn’t hurt for the next volumes to give them a bit more personality since they felt somewhat one dimensional towards the end. Still one of the worst named series though. It’s like going to Burger King and finding out that they don’t have any burgers. - 7/10

Peddler in Another World: I Can Go Back to My World Whenever I Want! Volume 5 - The worst volume in the series so far. The characters so far weren’t the deepest by any stretch, but the two new additions on the MC party are as one dimensional tropes as they can be. But I wouldn’t mind so much since I don’t really expect deep and well written characters from this series, but the villains this time around are just so terrible. Seriously, comically evil with cruelty just for the sake of showing the reader how Evil™ they are. I hate it when there are those joke villains in any form of media and in this volume there are TWO of them! - 4/10
The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior Vol. 4 - Picked the series up again after I watched the anime adaptation recently where MC wasn't so terrible. But in the light novel her inner monologue makes sure beyond a doubt that she is just another hardcore dumb MC archetype. Why are so many MCs in light novels that fucking oblivious to even the most obvious things? Especially in cases like this where MC is supposed to know everything about the story and character motivations already due to her reincarnation!? Also, suddenly she is some damsel in distress who needs to be rescued from some princeling when in previous volumes she was a powerful last boss cheat monster that could annihilate a platoon of bandits that even endangered the army. But no, now s single little prince can manhandle her as he wants. Such fucking inconsistent writing. - 3/10
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 5 Volume 7 - WHAT! A! VOLUME! This firmly cements Bookworm as the greatest light novel series. What a fucking volume man. I usually don’t read the pre-pubs but after this I had to grab them and keep reading. No fucking way I would wait until January for the next volume. - 11/10

I’ve read not much this week since my ipad disintegrated and I had to order a new one.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Vol. 13 - Originally I dropped the series because of the focus on non-Rimuru POC characters that I can’t stand. I decided to have a second look at the series and thought that volume 13 was okay again. Not great but okay. - 5/10
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Vol. 16 - Not much happening this time around, so not much to say about this one. - 6/10
