Back when I was a streamer I used Kodi with the add-ons (I was in a subreddit where the current good ones got posted now and then) and had a Real Debrid account.

It was really convenient, maybe give it a go with your Pi. There's an OS you can bang on it (is it openelec? Libre-elec? Something like that) and just plug it into your TV. You'll have to work out controlling it in a convenient way, I have a little keyboard about the size of a remote with a usb dongle. It's got a little touchpad for the mouse and cost me fuck all on Amazon.

You do have to pay for Real Debrid but it's totally worth the price and will get you used to paying for piracy.

    So the cycle goes:

Install Kodi and play with the free streams and think it's pretty great, get frustrated because you can't watch that one thing, finally bite the bullet and get a month of Real Debrid, tell your friends how ace Real Debrid is.

Just skip that and get Real Debrid once you have your Pi set up.

I replied "Right so I'm as bad as the smack heads that robbed my kids presents, is that what you're saying?"

He did that thing folk do when they look like a fish breathing then tried to backtrack, but that's when he became a "work colleague" again.

Yeah I mean I get it because I was also thinking about self hosting for a long time and had a bunch of questions myself.

The problem is that a lot of the questions were not needed, and a bunch of the other questions I answered myself by just tooling around with the stuff.

Great comment btw, it's a good idea to have a list of the services you'd like to run, in order of importance z then work through it.

I did that then found ways to combine a bunch of services, to the point where I had multiple stand alone VMs that are now just one for Home Assistant and second for Plex and Docker

I see a lot of posts like this and it's always people overthinking something they haven't tried to do yet.

So my advice is to just do it.

You may lose everything at some point in the future, Satan knows I have a few times, but because you've actually done it, you can do it again.

Now, because you're just thinking about doing it, it seems like a massive deal because you've not gone out and done it yet.

As for recommendations, I use a Proxmox VM with Debian and Docker. My Proxmox does backups, but my Docker compose is also a text document on my PC so I can recreate it all from scratch from that. I also have an idea what I did when I was learning how to do it, and have retained a good bit of that info so I could probably do it without either the backups or the Docker Compose, it would just take longer.

    Just do it

Honestly the short answer is practice.

Long answer is also practice, but with information lol.

I spent a long time moving from 2 look to 1 look (oll and pll) using this website https://jperm.net/algs/pll I've linked the PLL but there's OLL there too.

On this page I learned as many of these as I could. You can click on the picture and change the status from unlearned to learning to learned, then go to the trainer and you can select those 3 statuses and it will show only things you've selected. You can also click on the alg to get alternatives or even put your own alg in.

So I've gone to that page and set an alg as training, then just practiced that one alg until I have it in muscle memory. I aimed at trying to get each type of alg learned, so corners are there, or middles need moving, or headlights are there, or even that there is no pattern.

I was advised to learn PLL first then OLL algorithms, but I kinda picked out the patterns I see most in both, or algs that seemed the simplest first. So I have been learning both together and working from easiest to remember to hardest, and also making my own up for the ones that are most complicated.

This meant that I could practice a few, then go and do solves and when the patterns I knew came up I'd get faster solves for those patterns.

Ok so that's the big time saving out of the way, takes a lot to learn all the algorithms so it'll take time. But there's also taking time to plan your cross. That can save you a good chunk because there's less head scratching when you start.

Then there's the look ahead, which I'm only just getting. I did a lot of slow solves to get this in my brain and it's quite big. This is what I'm practicing to get from my 40second average down to 25

So as you're solving a corner and edge into the corner, once you have it set up into a 3 move insert, you don't need to look at it anymore. It's 3 loves to insert, so instead of looking at it as you put it in, you have to train yourself to look for the next 2 pieces you're putting together.

While your learning the OLL and PLL and just doing solves (not training algs), when you get one you don't know, try and alg you do know on it. Sometimes this changes your top pattern to an easier pattern that you can solve. It's like a stopgap 2 look (pll or oll). Eventually as you learn all the algs you'll find that you can "wing it" with some of the harder algorithms by just doing a couple of easier ones, which is all the harder ones are anyway, a couple of easier algs with a connecting move in the middle.

Hope all that helps. I'd also advise you have a "travel cube."

I have an extra cube that lives in the pocket of my leather jacket (yes I'm a metal-head Dad, doesn't quite fit the stereotype does it?) and it comes in useful when I'm stuck in a queue, or at the Dr waiting room or A and E (or emergency care as it's called in the US). This allows me to cube instead of whipping my phone out when I have time to kill out of the house.

My car has Bluetooth only. I wanted Android Auto because it was awesome on my phone, so I got an Android Auto tablet off Ali Express.

It's not arrived yet, I'm expecting it after the weekend, but I can't wait to have that UI back, that ease of use while driving.

It can connect to my Car by Aux or FM radio so can be wireless. I'll be changing to connecting to it instead of my car over Bluetooth. Then I'll be able to use the UI or Voice to control my phone while it's still in my pocket.

I hope it turns out as well as it is in my mind. For £30 it's worth a go

I can't remember the steps (they were simple though) but when my Home Assistant raspi SD card died, I bought a 128gb SSD from AliExpress and a usb-sata cable.

I then did something to the pi that meant it can boot from the SSD, and flashed the SSD using Balenetcher or RUFUS or whatever (same program I was using to flash my SD cards basically).

Then it was just a case of plugging in and turning it on.

Runs exactly the same as with an SD card with less dying because SD cards aren't meant for a lot of read/write but SSDs do.

Currently working on a Biomech system

I have all the usual Home Assistant stuff, including a Goodnight Routine. I also have 3 cats, one of which has only known the house with automation. Now these cats seem to have a hierarchy, and the Top Cat sleeps in the bedroom with us. This is now the Cat that only knows automation. So when I say "Hey Google, Goodnight" she meows, she's genuinely excited. Now a lot of the time my Wife falls asleep on the sofa while I watch TV or game, and I have to wake her up to go to bed. It's "Goodnight" then wake up the wife. Last night I had a brainwave. What if I can get the cat to do it? She wakes my wife up at 4am by cleaning her face already, maybe I can get her to wake her up on the sofa too. So last night I did the usual "Hey Google, Goodnight" then started saying "Goodnight" to the cat, then softly calling my wife, "Wifey, goodnight, goodnight" until she woke up. When she woke up the cat put her front paws on the sofa and sniffed my wife's face and meowed. So I plan on waking the Wifey up this way in the future in the hope that the cat will cotton on, and instead of just meowing in excitement, actively participate in the going to bed process. Thereby giving me a Biomech automation. She's an intelligent kitty so I have confidence it'll work. Today she (indoor cat) managed to get out while I gave a delivery guy directions and she sat outside in the garden meowing to be let back in, and another of my cats was inside the door meowing too.

It does. I use Mosquito but I believe HA has a built in one too. Mosquito was easy enough to set up though.

Honestly MQTT is like the nervous system of my HA setup. I started using it with Tasmota when I Tasmotised all my cheap WiFi bulbs, then opted for Zigbee2mqtt for my ZigBee setup.

But I also have things like my bedside clock (an old phone running WallPanel), my doorway tablet (a Nexus 7 running Fully Kiosk Browser), my PC and even my alarm clock app on my phone, all running through MQTT.

I even had Tasker on my phone communicating with HA via MQTT before I gave up on that. It's really useful

Sleep As Android integration I just found out about is pretty ace. github.com

It's been written by a self_admitted noob at integrations, but it effortlessly pulls in all data from my Sleep As Android alarm clock and even introduced me to features of the app I didn't know existed, and I've been using it for years. By following his instructions (I skipped the watch bit) Home Assistant now know when I'm sleeping and awake. I've been considering some kind of bed load esp board for a while but now I don't have to. I know when I fell asleep last night and even when I was snoring. More importantly, Home Assistant knows these things and I can now have a more reliable Good Night automation that knows when I'm sleeping, even when I get kicked out of bed and have to sofa sleep.

I've been using SB for years but it's just a bit shit sometimes. What I love about it is that it has Chromecast Bridgez meaning I can play music to my Google Home Minis. But nowadays I have all my music in Plex and I'm using Symphonium to stream to my phone. Symphonium connects up nicely.to my Google minis, I just need something to replace my squeeze lite end points so I can send music to them from my phone. Currently these are both running on Pis so if anyone can recommend an easy UPNP endpoint software for a pi, that would be great.

Finally figured out why Espresence was so shit

I woke up this morning at 6 am with IBS cramps. I tried to go back to bed but I'd woken fully up so by half 7 I was sat at my PC with a brew for some uninterrupted tinkering. My espresence has been a bit finicky since ai set it up. I've been moving the nodes around to find better positions with slight improvements but nothing making it properly stable. Well this morning was even worse than usual. I'm sat in my front room with my sensor flitting between the floor above and below me but never on the floor I'm on. I moved the sensors again. I played with dwell time. I changed "wait until" up. I even dived into the rabbit hole of tuning the base stations by increasing rssi and absorbsion, which actually seemed to do the best at improving it. So at this point my phone has been sitting on the desk for a few hours while I fine tune all this, when my wife comes down the stairs. Her beacon is firmly set to "frontroom" when she sits down but mine is bouncing around the house. Odd. Then I finally figured it out! The damn phone is sat on a wireless charging stand on my desk. This must be interfering with my Bluetooth! I take my phone off the stand and voila, it's in a stable place in espresence. So that's how I wasted 2 hours this morning. I say wasted, I did manage to get it more stable on the charging stand before I realised, and this seems to have helped it's stability when it's off the stand. In fact, all my messing about this morning has made espresence correctly report my location ever since.

I'm still having fun with esphome

Since my air fryer notification I've bought 2 more Esp32 Dev boards from The Greal Mall of China- AliExpress. A couple days later I'd read about MMwave sensors and purchased a couple of those too. A week later and they land a day after each other. I got home today and found 2 MMwave sensors on the kitchen table. I had half an hour before I had to pick the kids up so I tried to wire and flash it. The first problem was the writing. I'm 40 now but always had awesome vision, so shit like this just shows me how much it's actually deteriorated. I had to get my phone out and zoom in to work out where to plug in my wires. I managed to plug shit in and flash the basic firmware on the board, and managed to add some basic code I'd found for my board when I searched using it's full AliExpress name. I left with a sensor running in HA happy it was that easy. But... I did some digging, because all I was getting in HA was an occupancy On status, no variance or info. I found that when I just searched for the sensor without HLK at the beginning or whatever was at the end, there was loads of info. I found a GitHub full of code for my sensor and happily added it to my esp32. First I had an issue OTA flashing with some password issue, so I flashed it over USB and it worked, I had new sensors in HA! The problem was that they were unresponsive. I'd positioned it at this point and figured the Dupont wires I used had probably come loose. When I unplugged and replugged it all, success This thing is awesome. It could see me at my computer and I must have been only just visible to it, I was sat kinda beside it, must have amazing peripheral vision. Since I've got it going it's detected occupancy throughout. I was watching it pick up my wife just watching TV, unlike my aqara ZigBee one. My worry is that it'll take a while fine tuning it to filter out the cats. I'm hoping to use it with my espresence setup to make sofa-sleeping more chill. I don't want lights popping on and off when I'm snoring and my wife gets up, but I do want the lights off when we're both in bed. I need to fine tune the espresence though, or rely on it less. It seems like it's more like Room Assistant than I thought and I flit around the house in Bluetooth Land. I've managed to improve it by moving the sensors and turning my HA beacon to High from Medium and up to Low Latency. I can set up another MMwave sensor but I'm gonna move my front room aqara to the bedroom and see if I need any. I might try a pressure sensor for the bed next, or maybe see if I can run a Squeezebox node from it.

My friends and family don't understand why I'm so happy with my air fryer notification.

"Hur Hur that's what a timer on your phone is for dude" Yeah but this was a smart plug that was going dusty in a drawer! Anyway it's not the notification that makes my brain tickle in that special way, but the fact that my HA takes note of who was in the kitchen when the air fryer was started and only notifies the floor with that person on when it's done. Now I've worked that logic out with a silly Air Fryer notification I can reuse it in all my other automations.

Presence/occupancy with a Node Red Binary Sensor, what a revelation!

This week I've been playing with Espresence, which for anyone that doesn't know, is a program that runs on an ESP32 and tracks Bluetooth. It then has a guess where you are based upon the strength of the signal. So a little backstory, I recently wiped out my HA server and didn't have a backup so I've started from scratch. Since I've started from scratch I've been avoiding Node Red and just using the HA automations, but I am a NR boy at heart. Previously my bathroom light automation in NR was a massive flow of door, motion, leak sensors. When I added espresence I decided to reinstall NR to add these new sensors into my automations, and found the Binary Sensor node, so I had a play and managed to make a Front Room Presence binary sensor. "This is pretty good" I thought and made another for my bathroom, taking in all the sensors I used previously. But this time they triggered a binary sensor instead of the lights. Now I have the binary sensor triggering the light automation, with extras here and there (like guest mode being on, trigger the lights from the hallway sensor instead of the bathroom sensor. The light automation looks much cleaner and presence is all done on one page. So I'm using the binary sensor in 2 ways here, as an addition to the motion sensor in my front room, and as a replacement for a full blown automation. Functionally it's not really any different to using an input boolean helper, but I can make this binary in NR itself. Edit: Gotchas So I should probably tell you about the big Gotcha in creating a Binary in Node Red. You need to set the msg. from string to Boolean. So for each binary you need a Boolean true and a Boolean false nose to set it off and on. Everything else was pretty simple

With the recent Open Home Foundation announcement I decided to finally buy some ESP32 chips. They're arriving today, what can I do with them?

I've been in the HA world since the time the government placed the world under house arrest. Since then I've seen all sorts of amazing things people can do with an esp32 device. So I'm late to the game. I always thought it may become a dangerous rabbit hole so I've just avoided it. But apparently I have 4 coming today so it's about time to ask you guys what you do. My first project was gonna be getting some Bluetooth tracking going on around the house to get some room prescence going on. I also read I can make some seat/bed sensors with a little wire, aluminium foil, paper and a folder-insert, that sounds like it could be fun. I have a breadboard and a bunch of components I bought when I first got a Pi. I don't know how compatible these components are with esp32s or what the hell I can do. I don't have a soldering iron (yet). So basically: noob post, gimme some easy projects that don't require a lot, or wow me with your esp projects.

    Another Gluetun appreciation post

I saw an appreciation post for Gluetun on here in the last couple of weeks. I'd set it up before my server died and I had to reinstall everything, but then gone for the easy method when I was reinstalling. So my easy method install had a VM as a server running Plex and Docker and a second VM with Mullvad installed running anything that needed a VPN in Docker. Yesterday I opened up a program behind the VPN and it wasn't working again. I had to restart the VM to get it going and it annoyed me. So before work I set up Gluetun. I had previously used this walkthrough https://youtu.be/9dJPOd0XbN8 so I went back to it, looked in the notes and found his GitHub, then his docker compose under Torrent-VPN. I stole his initial Gluetun config and the qBittorrent part, but then went into Portainer and took all my running containers and added them to the file. I took the ports out of each compose file and added the "network mode" and "depends on Gluetun" bits from the qBittorrent part of his config and added them to each compose file I added to the file. Then the ports I had removed I added to the Gluetun part of his compose file. Downloaded a config file for Mullvad and added the IP and private Key to the Gluetun compose. Then launch the stack and it worked. Now for the Gotchas. I had to go into Portainer to get the IP address that the whole stack used. This IP address was required to get containers talking to each other. If you need Sonarr to connect to Prowlarr it needs this IP address. Also the downloader (he uses qBittorrent and I used RDT client) needed to be mapped using "localhost" for each container and the port But other than those Gotchas it was quite easy and I managed to get everything set up an hour after finishing work. This was because I just used backups of my already running containers and restored them in the new ones, then edited the bits that had changed (IP addresses in my Gotchas) The upside is that I'm now only using the one VM, meaning I've saved 4gb of RAM. I can use that ram for something else now. Nextcloud? Immich? Hope this helps someone else.

Home Assistant things you'd miss now; what is a great little thing HA does for you, I'll start.

So last week I had a Proxmox fuckup and lost everything. I learnt the hard way what living without backups is like and I don't recommend it. Silver lining is that I don't have to tidy up all those old automations and entities anymore. Anyway it made me realise what I'd miss if I didn't have them, because I didn't have them. I've been really really tired this week. I get up at 5am and start work at 6, and while I don't like it, I usually cope with it better than most and have comments about how "It's too early for you." But not this week. I've put it down to losing my connection between my alarm clock and HA. I use SleepAsAndroid and have done for a long time. Back when I started it was because it connected to Tasker, but over the years I've moved to HA and still use it. SleepAsAndroid with Tasker was done with web hooks but I use the MQTT integration with HA. This means it's connected when I'm home but not in network when I'm away, so it can't fire the messages, which is what you want. Previously I used Node Red to set up this automation but I haven't reinstalled it yet, I'm seeing if I can do it all on HA, then it's one less thing and I can automate in the app. I spent a while this morning trying to figure out how to reintegrate it with HA and struggled, but eventually I found an integration in HACS which meant I just had to change my device identifier in the alarm app by adding /MyName to the end of the SleepAsAndroid topic so it reads SleepAsAndroid/MyName, add the HACS integration and then add it again in the Integrations pane, with MyName plumbed in. Then I added a blueprint from the add ons page and left the house to go on a day trip. In and amongst the day trip I've been making my automation on the HA app via the blueprint, and have come home, loaded a bowl and set my alarm for 1 minute time, then smoke the bowl and wait... Success! Hopefully I'll have more energy this week when I wake up to my lights turning on, instead of complete darkness and a strange noise. Now what would you miss that isn't obvious (like motion activated lights)?

Best practice for mounting usb storage in Proxmox

I've got 3 HDDs connected to my Proxmox machine via usb3. They worked fine until this week. I have them mounted and passed through to OMV. One failed on Sunday. It was fine one minute, I rebooted and Proxmox wouldn't boot... Couldn't work out why it wouldn't boot and reflashed Proxmox, losing all my machines (I have since learned the importance of backups since I had none). I've spent 4 days rewriting it all. Rebooted last night and it happened again, but this time I noticed that it was struggling to find one of my drives and edited them out of Fstab and got it booting again. I've since added 2/3 drives back in by adding "nofail" to my Fstab entries but my main storage drive is now showing as 100gb instead of 1tb and won't pass through to OMV. I've come to the conclusion that they were mounted by label and "forgot" their label, hence wouldn't boot, they're now mounted by UUID. So has anyone got any tips on the best way to mount these things without killing my whole setup? Also if anyone knows why my storage is showing as 100gb in Proxmox and won't pass through to OMV now I would be eternally grateful. Kinda want to get the files off that drive...

Always have a backup ready, go check now

I thought I had a backup. I use the Gdrive add-on and it should have had a backup. I didn't have a backup. Turns out when I moved from a Pi to Proxmox I didn't set Gdrive add-on up properly, so it wasn't making backups every 3 days like it always has. Then I killed Proxmox. No idea what I did to kill it, I just tried to make my NAS VM have 4gb ram all the time instead of Ballooning from 1gb, and it never booted again. So I had to start fresh. But while I've only been playing with VMs for a couple months my HA instance has been a work of love since Lockdowns and COVID times. And now I'm starting again. Now go and check your backup solution.

Noob post: Sometimes the best thing to do is just give it up as a bad job and try something else instead.

I'm about a month in to playing at self hosting. I'm currently trying to get a great media server solution going on. I'm trying to containerise as much as I can and have everything sharing a NAS for content. The last few days I've been adding music to my NAS for the Music server, LMS aka Squeezebox. I've always liked that I can use LMS with my Google Minis and anything that can run it, and I've seen software for esp32 chips... Anyway just ripping the 13050 tracks off my old iPod was a slog, and because I can't seem to get more than 4mbps transfer rates it's taken a couple days just to smb transfer the music to the NAS. Now I passed a Tb HDD through to Open Media Vault so I thought I'd just learn to mount a network share to my Ubuntu container running the Squeezebox server using the same method, Fstab. TWO DAYS I've been trying to mount in fstab and all I'm hitting is kernel errors or syntax errors. 2 days... It's time to give up. So I've turned off the PC to get in the bath, and just had a quick look at PCP, the all in one LMS os. I once had it running on a pi zero... It only has a goddamn dedicated UI portion for adding a samba share! Tomorrow I will spin up a copy and get it working, THEN I just need to do all my current customisations to THAT instance instead... I'm already in Version 2 of my LMS attempts, so this will be Version 3. But: my ARR/Plex stack is Version 2 too, version 3 is gonna be Version 1 (Docker) but better (with stacks, mount points and another go at Wireguard, but with NAS and Ubuntu instead of Windows. Sometimes you've just got to go AFK and make a decision to burn it all down and start again. Update: I've tried to get PCP running in Proxmox with no dice. Instead I've got Squeezelite running on a pi4b. That has freed up a pi3b which is now running PCP.

Help a noob find what I'm looking for please. I have a bunch of IP addresses and I wanna give em names.

I'm using Heimdall to easily access my self hosted stuff ATM. I would like for my family to use them too if they're so inclined, but there's no way they will be able to remember the IP addresses, I know I can't! Is it a DNS I'm looking for? If so, I'm already hosting a couple of instances of Adguard, can I just set it so that Plex is 192.xxx.x.47 and snapdrop is 192.xxx.x.53 and use that to resolve the request so my 13 year old can just type Plex into his browser and find it? Or do I need something like Caddy or Nginx or something in between? Thanks for any advice.

Noob having fun with Self-Hosting story

I'm a noob to all this, and love this server. I've recently set up Proxmox and Portainer, got Home Assistant transferred onto my new computer and set up an Arr stack on Windows VM. I kept adding storage to that stack until it was talking half my internal storage so I bought a usb3 cable and hooked up an old 1tb HDD I had lying around. I decided I wanted NAS storage with the HDD. I had already set up OMV but it was being a bit funny. Whenever I logged in to it I had no options, so I couldn't add the HDD to it. So I did some looking around and found TrueNAS. Installed it and started fiddling. Jesus it's hard work to just add an SMB share from it! After literally hours of tinkering I still was no closer so I gave up and went for a bath. In the bath it occurred to me that maybe I was logging in to OMV wrong. I fired up the browser on my phone in the bath and instead of logging in with my name, I tried "admin" and lo and behold there is all the options I couldn't see before. 5 minutes later I had half a tb in an SMB share, and then it was a simple case of making network shared folders on all my windows machines. Thought you guys may be amused by the noob error of logging in as Admin.

Openwrt on Proxmox. Questions I have

I'm new to Proxmox and have had Openwrt on an AP router for a while, but still am not all that good at it. I followed a YouTube video yesterday to set up Openwrt as a Proxmox device. The idea being that I can patch all my containers through it and have a single IP address and many ports associated with it on my home lan. But I'm also trying to get Mullvad VPN installed on it. When I've followed the instructions to install Mullvad I can no longer ping the outside world. If there's any pointers to getting that going I'd be grateful. I followed the instructions on their website. Questions: if I get Mullvad working is there a way for me to route some containers through that and others through my own IP, or do I need 2 openwrt containers to get this? I noticed that during the setup I removed the WAN from the LAN and just left Mullvad as an exit route, so I assume I would need a second LAN with the WAN for me to be able to route via it. If that is the case, can I route some through one LAN and some through a second?

Help passing the audio cable to Home Assistant in Proxmox please

I've recently migrated from a raspberry pi 4b to a dell Optiplex running Proxmox and I'm having a lot of fun with it. One of the services I have running is Raspotify, which allowed me to plug my pi into a speaker and run Spotify through it. I had a quick go passing the audio jack through to my HA VM and it just stopped working completely. Only after removing the pass-through did it work again. So if anyone has managed it, what do? Do I use SPICE as a driver or none? Which device is it? Thanks

I wish youtibe cube reviews spoke about build quality on top of all the adjustment and speed.

I've recently bought a Tornado V2 and a WRM V9. I've had the Tornado for a couple of months and treated myself to the WRM V9 just after Christmas. After watching videos about both cubes everyone raves about the Tornado and it's adjustment system. Did you know its the cube Max Park uses? Yes, yes I heard it a bunch already. So I got it and the first disappointment was finding one of the corner magnets was missing out of the box. Like I spent £35 on a fucking cube and it's missing a magnet! Upon closer inspection the magnet was in the corner piece, I could hear it rattling around. So I had to take the corner to bits and refit the magnet. These things are held in place by a TINY bit of plastic. It was fine for a few days, then I could feel the cube was a little wonky and sure enough the magnet has popped out again, so it's time to take the corner apart, again. This time I tried to bend the tiny bit of plastic a little to make the hold better, and SNAP, it's broken off. Wtf? I got a dab of superglue and glued the magnet in place. Put it back together and did a couple solves and it still feels wonky. Wtf? The magnet has popped out again, I guess I didn't wait long enough for the glue to set. Take it apart and find it's actually the magnet in the other side of the piece that's dislodged and stuck to my glued magnet. So I glue THAT magnet in place too. A week or so later I decided to make my own lube following a YouTube tutorial. 1 part hair conditioner and 2 parts Vegetable Glycerin I have left over from making my own vape juice. I went to take an edge out of the Tornado to lube it and it just crumbled in my fingers as I pull it out. Wtf? That lead me to another frantic glue session, I was about to go to work and wanted to take my cube with me, and putting these pieces together is hard work, I broke the fixings that hold it and had to glue it instead. So now I have a badly glued edge piece on my shiny expensive maglev cube. Now I've got the WRM V9. Cube head says it's adjustment system is dogshit and it's a travesty that you can't adjust the magnets. But I just don't agree. How often do you honestly adjust a cube, once or twice? Who cares that you need a screwdriver to do this? The magnets on my Tornado seem to adjust themselves so the fact that they're adjustable is moot anyway. But the build quality on a Moyu cube just seems to be way better. The magnets are still where they should be and I haven't broken an edge piece just taking it out for a lubing. The cube itself just feels more solid. It doesn't feel like the plastic is cheap and it will shatter if I drop it from waist height like the Tornado does. And that's why the WRM is my new main, and the Tornado has become the cube that lives in my leather jacket pocket for when I'm out and about. When it comes to turning and whatnot they feel pretty similar if you turn the magnet adjustment up to full on the Tornado, so there's not much difference in performance, but the WRM just feels like a better quality cube. So yeah, I wanna hear about how quickly my cubes will break on YouTube reviews. I don't wanna be dropping cash on a cube that will be broken out of the box.

Huh. Well I just made motion activated lights with no motion sensor. Quite pleased with myself.

I don't have a motion sensor in my bedroom, I didn't want lights going on when my Wife is sleeping. I do have an old phone in a dock next to the bed though. It has Wall Panel and Home Assistant apps on it, and I'm using it as a bedside clock with smarts. Wall panel has a feature where the screen turns on when the camera detects motion. I decided that since it only does this when I wave at my clock, I may as well put it to use. So I looked at the HA app sensors and found the phones activity. I've then made my most out of the way light in the bedroom trigger when the screen is on. During the day it then trips back off when my rudimentary Wasp In a Box automation works out the bedroom is empty (it adds a number when my Hallway motion is tripped and takes one away when it's tripped again, also uses other motion sensors to work out whether we are entering or leaving the room). At night it waits 5 minutes then turns off. So now when I enter the room during the day and it's dark (HA app can display lux) my light turns on, at night when I need a wee I can just wake up my bedside clock and pee, get back into bed and the light shuts off.

The "Oh no I fucked up the cross" algorithm: i hope it may help someone starting out with CFOP

I don't know if anyone needs to hear this but I use this all the damn time. So when you're doing the cross you stick blue and green opposite each other, and red and orange opposite each other. I find that I'm rubbish at the order they go in. I know it's Blue Red Green Orange but sometimes I'll go blue orange green red by accident. As long as you have the opposite colours, well, opposite each other (blue-green, red-orange) and haven't royally fucked it up (Blue green red orange) then you can just do this. Get your wrongly aligned middle slice and move it into the yellow layer with an M2, then spin them the opposite way around with a U2, then put them back with an M2. Thing is, you don't have to do this immediately. You can actually do the whole of F2L first, then flip em afterwards. Meaning instead of getting in a bit of a panic about having done the cross wrong and trying to figure it out you can say to yourself "Oh yeah, better do that alg when I get a chance" and do it when there's only yellow edges in the M slice partway through F2L or leave it until you're done. Also, you don't necessarily have to flip the bad 2 edges, you can flip the good 2 edges if you notice before you F2L and just realign your white slice so the cross matches. TLDR: M2 U2 M2

Can anyone help me with Notifications? Not the normal questions though, I want to be notified when HA gives me a certain notifocation in HA, the little red 1 that pops up

So long story short, Google Nest thermostat just disconnects from HA every once in a while. It used to be when I did a reboot I'd get a notification in HA telling me an integration needs setting up again, always Nest and Google Calendar. But now it seems to disconnect and not tell me. I realise when it's fucking freezing and my heating hasn't kicked on (I control it with HA rather than Nest because I get better results.) So what I've done is have Node Red reload the integration every 4 hours, because when I manually do this it'll come up that the integration needs reconfiguring. So now all I need is to be notified when the integration needs reconfiguring. A Google just brings me up threads on how to send a notification. I can do this already, I just want a notification when I get a notification... See, the problem is that it's called "Notifications" in HA.

Update: one week on from making bath sensors

Last week I set up and posted about my bath sensors. https://feddit.uk/post/4377577 A week on and I'm so happy with the results. I've had to tweak my original automation to have a dwell in the input so it doesn't fire unless the leak sensors have "detected a leak" for a minute, and made an input Boolean that turns on when the automation fires and off again 2 hours later. This Boolean is checked before the automation fires. Also someone in the comments condescendingly noted that I would have to let water out when I displace it getting in, but of course my sensors are low enough that I have plenty of room for myself and some cold water. The sensor is on a length of wire about a meter long so it's just a case of tightening the wire so it dangles at the right height. Why I love it: I've just been sat in my bedroom while my bath runs. The kids are leaving me alone and Wifey is enjoying some peace on the sofa. While I'm sat, I'm strumming through Bob Marley "No Woman No Cry" on my guitar and singing along. Then my lights start flashing and I hear "The ensuite bath is run" from the speaker on the floor below, so I put my guitar down and sort it out... Then write my appreciation post from the bath. I appreciate the time the bath runs as much as the bath itself, and the lack of that little stress of "ooh, better check on the bath" is well worth the £10 I spent to get em (I think they were £4 each plus shipping). My Wife told my son to check on his bath earlier and he replied "I don't need to Mum, remember?" without looking up from his Switch. The only downside is I have a wire wrapped around my taps, but 🤷‍♂️ worth it!

    Most used alg? youtu.be

I'm currently learning full OLL slowly and also some PLL, but I'm picking and choosing the algs I'm learning. I recently saw the linked video for a fast U perm and it made my solves so much faster because I seem to use it in A LOT of solves. So I thought I'd share it, and also ask what your most used algs are? Post links if possible, let's all get faster together.

I bought some leak sensors to use as bath sensors.

I'm a Dad. When I run a bath I hang around waiting for it to run. Usually I grab my guitar or my Rubik's cube and play around for a bit. Most of the time I lose track of time and find my bath is "overflowing" by the time I realise I should still be keeping an eye on it. My kids are the same, usually they don't wanna bath, they're playing games or something. So I got a couple of Tuya water leak sensors off Ali for £4 each, one for each bath. I installed mine yesterday on the back of a basket that we keep bath things in hanging from the shower. I've run the wire down, around the taps and a dab of glue on the back of the sensor to stick it just below the overflow. Now when my bath water touches it, all my bedroom, kitchen and front room lights will flash for a second and my GH speakers will announce that my bath is run. I plan to do the same with my kids' bath, I just need to find somewhere to put the sensor. It's an idea I've had for ages. Next idea is to have one placed in the downpipe from my guttering so that I get notified when it's raining, saving my washing from getting wet. We live in the UK so rain is pretty common. Any other creative uses for normal sensors? Share them here for the community.

My Docker Install that I made in 2020 has finally caught up with me, so I had to migrate to HAOS yesterday. I have to say it was relatively pain free!

I got up yesterday morning to my HA server down again. It's been doing it daily since the last update, and has been warning me about Journal issues for a year at least. Well the tried and true method of turning it off at the wall, counting to 10 and turning it back on again didn't work. Having a scan through Docker and trying to get it started told me JournalD or whatever it is, is not installed for that container and refused to start. So I just unplugged the SSD, wrote HAOS to it and plugged it back in, signed in and installed my backup. Then it died for 3 hours before rising like Lazarus. Honestly the only problem I had with the whole process was a lack of a timer telling me, well, anything while the restore was occuring. It's funny how, even though I've relied on the Backup/Restore function so.many times, I'm still surprised at how easy it all is. Also a funny thing happened. We had a whole day with no automated lights while I sorted it out. My 10 year old came to me at bedtime to complain his bedside lamp didn't work, so I explained that it does work, you just have to use it like a "normal lamp" and switch it off and back on with the button. He could not comprehend that at all! I had to explain the button I meant wasn't the ZigBee one he's been using for years, but an actual physical button on the lamp. It cracked me up, my kids don't know how lights work!

Scottish Government urges UK to decriminalize drugs news.stv.tv

The Scottish Government has called for the decriminalisation of all drugs for personal use. Ministers in Scotland want the UK Government to agree to proposals that they claim will save lives. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Scotland’s drugs policy minister Elena Whitham called for a public health approach to tackling the drugs crisis. She said decriminalisation would mean people found in possession of drugs were “treated and supported rather than criminalised and excluded”. Drug laws are currently reserved to Westminster. Whitham urged the UK Government to either devolve the powers on drugs to Holyrood or back proposals to decriminalise them. Advertisement The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said Rishi Sunak has no plans to alter his “tough stance” on drugs. The proposals were laid out in a new Scottish Government paper on drug law reform. The Scottish Government wants the laws amended to allow for the introduction of safe consumption rooms.STV News The Scottish Government wants the laws amended to allow for the introduction of safe consumption rooms. Other proposals include immediate legislative changes to allow Scottish ministers to implement harm reduction measures such as supervised drug consumption facilities, and increased access to the life-saving drug naloxone. Drug consumption rooms allow people to inject drugs with supervision. Proponents say they have been tested around the world and have been shown to work well. But they have been opposed by the UK Government which blocked an attempt to roll them out in Glasgow. She said: “These are ambitious and radical proposals, grounded in evidence, that will help save lives. Advertisement “We want to create a society where problematic drug use is treated as a health, not a criminal matter, reducing stigma and discrimination and enabling the person to recover and contribute positively to society. “While we know these proposals will spark debate, they are in line with our public health approach and would further our national mission to improve and save lives. “We are working hard within the powers we have to reduce drug deaths, and while there is more we need to do, our approach is simply at odds with the Westminster legislation we must operate within. “These policies could be implemented by the Scottish Government through the devolution of further, specific powers to Holyrood including the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 – or through independence. “An immediate way for these policies to be enacted would be for the UK Government to use its existing powers to change its drug laws. “Scotland needs a caring, compassionate and human rights informed drugs policy, with public health and the reduction of harm as its underlying principles, and we are ready to work with the UK Government to put into practice this progressive policy.” Asked whether the Prime Minister was likely to grant the Scottish Government’s request, his official spokesman said: “No. Whilst I haven’t seen those reports I think I’m confident enough to say that there are no plans to alter our tough stance on drugs.” Labour’s shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves also ruled out the policy. Advertisement “The short answer is no,” she told journalists during a visit to Scotland. “I don’t think this sounds like a good policy. “I find it quite stunning that this would be a priority for the Scottish Government when we’re here today talking about the Tory mortgage bombshell and what we would do to address that. “We’re here meeting people training to do jobs in the industries of the future. “We’ve got more than 700,000 people in Scotland on NHS waiting lists – pick an issue.” Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said drug deaths are three times as high in Scotland as elsewhere in the UK despite the same drugs laws, while Reeves added that it was not a “constitutional issue”.

    Well shit

My Nest E thermostat has shown the dreaded W5 error today. All my research is saying the Wi-Fi chip is fried and its a well known issue with Nest thermostats. It has only lasted me 6 months and from a Home Assistant standpoint has been a bit infuriating as it constantly needs reintegration. The plus side is that it cost me a grand total of £15 off a charity shop on eBay that was selling it for spares and repairs because the display was "dead" but actually just needed a good charge. I saw from my research that this has happened to a lot of people who actually paid full price for it, and replacements are only sent out if it's in warranty. It still works as a thermostat but ain't smart no more! I'll have to start trawling ebay for a cheap replacement display. Nothing else to say, I've been starved of social media this week, going cold turkey from the R word, so that's what this is really.

    I finally bought a domain

I used DuckDNS for ages to access Home Assistant but it was flakey. I use Google Assistant so I need external access. Nginx was the real bastard, it made my head hurt every time I used it. So eventually I gave Cloudflared a go. I followed a blog and managed to get it working the free, with a free domain. Until a couple of weeks ago. It just stopped working. Thanks to a Reddit post I worked out that it was because my free domain used .ga and that was taken down because it was used by hackers and tricksters and odious people who were up to no good. So I've bought a .com address for 5 years for around £0.65 a month through Cloudflare themselves. It was easy to set up and seems to be pretty solid, although I've only had it a couple days.
