Also there are various specific cryptos that are easier or harder to mine. I believe monero is quite easy and bitcoin is more difficult, for example. I swear I'm not a cryptobro, I'm just a computer nerd who has been asked to explain it so many times that I have an okay understanding. Plus I had a CS teacher who was super into crypto and did a few lectures on it. You are generally correct, though. Also apologies for incoherence. My brain is not braining so well today.

Most consumer ones don't, but for a lot of them I've heard there's a hack that will work by identifying it as a similar supported one.

Assuming I read that right, and assuming that's right: Person bought Disney+. Clicked accept in the EULA when they did. Was served food that gave them allergic reaction. Binding arbitration agreement basically means their case against Disney was tried by Disney employees instead of in court. If they pirated content instead of paying, they never would have accepted the EULA, and they would have gotten to sue Disney in a real court.

Yeah, I like it too. My only issue is ollama's lack of intel support. I have been looking at issue 1590 on their GitHub. For now I have a 1050ti in a cardboard box PC with other hardware being 10+ years old and a mixed set of RAM totalling 12G. It also has a 100Mbit nic, so I can't take advantage of full internet speed when downloading models. The worst part is they can support intel, but haven't merged the solution because of an issue with the windows intel drivers. Linux is fine but I can 't have it. I wasn't planning to rant, but I already typed it so... enjoy?

    How bad is Ubuntu?

I have been not recommending Ubuntu to people because of obvious reasons (the Amazon search integration and snaps, mainly). The reason I am posting this is because someone I know mentioned that they are considering Ubuntu. They have a degree in cs and generally are competent with computers, but didn't like mint when they tried it. I would like to know a few things, since I haven't looked into Ubuntu in a while: Has anything changed about snap? I know people didn't like it at first, especially the proprietary server, but I don't think they will care about that and I mainly just want to know if it will eat all their RAM or something. Have they made any changes in their management that may make sure there won't be another Amazon search thing? Is it best to use the default desktop on Ubuntu? I would recommend Kubuntu to them, all else being equal, but don't know if maybe the default one is better integrated. Edit: The person will be 100's of miles away so helping them with issues will be hard, and Ubuntu LTS should be stable. Plus, basically everything that "supports" linux but doesn't really usually supports Ubuntu. I do really see where they're coming from, but want to know if it has a major potential to backfire on them and if they might be better off with Fedora.

One of the rare cases where this is a serious option: just don't buy it. People say that for phones that spy on you, but that's ridiculous because that is quite hard for some people. This is not. Use a regular toothbrush. Duck tape a vibrator motor to the handle if you really feel like that helps. You don't need the ai, and it is unlikely that you will only ever be able to buy ai toothbrushes.

I agree. Ads are just completely scummy. If I am interested in buying something, I will research and decide for myself what I want to buy by looking at marketing material, specs, etc. The only thing ads are good for is making you subconsciously more likely to think of mc Donalds over bk when deciding where to stop for food, and that kind of subtle manipulation should be illegal. Sorry for ranting about something you seem to agree with me on, but a little circle jerking is nice every now and then.

Help with AM5 cooler causing motherboard flex. [Solved]

I recently built a computer for someone. It was just for general use, not gaming or anything, so I went with fairly simple specs. Because they wanted an insanely quiet computer, I went with an NHD15S. The problem is that cooler causes flexing in the motherboard that makes the CPU not make contact with the socket. Is there a not overly janky way that I could fix that without getting a smaller cooler? I know flexing is the issue because it works for a while with the big cooler, but eventually won't boot after being shut down, or crashes in weird ways and then won't boot, and the mobo lights always show a CPU and dram light. The box cooler has no issues, but is louder under load. Edit: it does boot with the large cooler if the system is on it's side. I followed the mounting instructions carefully. Edit 2: Solved. I was overtightening.

It's not great. I have one, and I am able to use it, but there are some issues. Battery life is the main one. It will probably get 6 hours or so of active use, but they don't have good idle power management, so you don't get much more by turning it off.

Their performance isn't bad. It wasn't ever all that great though. It was mainly ppw that people liked, and you wouldn't really get that benefit with asahi because of the previously mentioned power management issues. Newer AMD laptops will absolutely outperform it.

Another issue that you didn't ask about, but I feel is worth mentioning: apple's build quality is bad. On mine, the display flashes pink sometimes. It did this before I ever put asahi on it. There are many reports of other users with the same issue. When I fist noticed it, it only happened once a month or so. Now I notice it 5-10 times a day, and I don't use it that much (maybe an hour or so a day).

Also, according to Louis Rossmann, there is a data line next to a power line on the motherboard that can easily be shorted out in humidity. He has pointed out many design issues, and usually they persist for quite some time before apple does anything, if they ever do.

I know I am coming across as very biased against apple, but keep in mind that I bought one. I thought that M1 was a large step forward in the quality of their products, and thought it was worth it to get one. I was wrong.

I don't think it is a hardware issue. I have decent hardware that's fairly new. I unfortunately can't say much, though another commenter let me know the SSH failure message is relevant. Nginx 502, ssh not working.

I am currently out of town, and my server went down. All my services go through nginx, and suddenly started giving error 502. My SSH won't let me in. I had my sister reboot the server, and it still doesn't work. I apologize for the lack of details, but that is all I know, and I can't access logs. I've cleared cache, and used a VPN in case fail2ban got me. I recently got a tp link router, so it could be something with that, but it was working for a while. I will have her do another reboot, and if that doesn't work I will have her power off and unplug the server in case it was hacked. Edit: I have absolutely no clue why, but it works now. I literally did nothing. As far as I know, my sister hasn't touched it today. It just started working. Computers, man... Edit 2: Actually she said she did something. Not sure what, but it works now.

Anyone using a BananaPi r2 /r3 for your router?

My family needs a new router to replace the old (though not old enough that it should be dying) netgear router that is slowly dying. I want to do something with good foss firmware like opnsense or openwrt. I was thinking that the BananaPi options look good, but had some concerns. I would like to install the firmware myself, rather than trust that the manufacturer didn't modify it in any way. I don't know if the pre-made openwrt bananapi routers can be flashed with custom firmware easily. Also I need something with wifi (ideally wifi 6 or better), though would be willing to consider a separate WAP. VLANs would be nice too, but I could live without them. Have any of you done this? What has your experience been, both with install and long term? Is there anything I should look out for that I might not think of? What resources can I use to find out more about this? Edit: This is the one I'm looking at. Sorry for linking to Amazon but I used FF's remove tracking from URL feature. https://www.amazon.com/youyeetoo-BPI-R3-Development-MediaTek-Support/dp/B0BLVF9697/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

    Never buy .xyz

I just wanted to post this here because I want to help you all and hurt gen.xyz as much as possible. I had a .xyz domain through njal.la which I used to host jellyfin, homeassistant, and other basic things for friends and family. My domain recently became inaccessible without any notice. After a while of troubleshooting, I found that it had been reported to xyz as abuse, and they must have done zero investigation whatsoever before serverholding my domain. I thought about opening a ticket with xyz to get my domain back, but realized that I no longer wish to buy from some shitty company that will take down any site without warning. Bought a .com domain since they are somewhat reputable, and I would advise everyone here to never buy a .xyz domain. Angry rant over.

Should I use a rolling distro?

Currently, I use Debian on my server. I have an Intel Arc GPU that I use for transcoding, however hardware encoding doesn't work. I am able to get a slight performance benefit from decoding, but encoding would be much better. I have an A750 in my desktop (not server), and was able to get hardware acceleration working, but only with openSUSE Tumbleweed with the stable kernel (6.9.4). While I would love to have encoding, (I am limited on upload speed and av1 encoding isn't practical on the CPU for multiple streams), I doubt it would be stable using a rolling distro and non-standard kernel. Has anyone else tried anything like this? Are there any arc + jellyfin users out there who know any way to make this work, or any openSUSE self-hosters could vouch for its stability? I am willing to try almost any distro (except ubuntu) to make this work. Edit: fixed. There was some firmware I needed to work on debian. I will link and such in a bit when I have time.

    Some questions about fedora

Hello. These questions are self-hosting related, but I feel they do partially belong here as they are also about fedora linux in general. I have a server which is currently running Debian. It has an arc GPU, and no matter what I do, video encoding refuses to work. I was thinking I might move it to Fedora, but have some questions first. 1. How are Fedora's updates? I believe they are about once a year, so how is it to switch between versions? I can deal with annual maintenance, but don't want weird issues causing downtime. 2. Also about updates, how should I do auto updates on fedora? 3. I am currently on apparmor. I know seLinux has more features, but I have also heard that it can be annoying to deal with. 4. I mentioned the arc GPU. Has anyone managed to get video encoding working on it on fedora? If so how? Edit: also, how is it to move a raid over. It is mdadm raid 5 with ext4. It is VERY important that nothing happens to the data, unfortunately I have not yet implemented a backup, although I do intend to soon.

I recently found this on Reddit while looking into why jellyfin is effected so much by latency. I admit I am not sure of the technical stuff behind this, so if anyone would like to chime in that would be much appreciated.

    How should I do backups?

I have a server running Debian with 24 TB of storage. I would ideally like to back up all of it, though much of it is torrents, so only the ones with low seeders really need backed up. I know about the 321 rule but it sounds like it would be expensive. What do you do for backups? Also if anyone uses tape drives for backups I am kinda curious about that potentially for offsite backups in a safe deposit box or something. TLDR: title. I tried to get it to work with chromium as a troubleshooting step, and while it did let me change the address, it had some other stuff after the search.php?q= that made it return a 404. Does anyone know how to fix this? edit: run with -e OPEN_SEARCH_HOST="https://yourdomain.tld" to get it to report the correct thing. You also have to remove and add it back in your search engine.

    Find-My alternatives

Hello. I just got a google pixel with grapheneos, and would like a way to use Apple's find-my or something similar with family members who still use Apple. I would like something open source that can either proxy my location to Find My or serve as an alternative. I know these apps and services are inherently not private but I do need it so please don't be the guy to say "just don't use it," I would if it were an option. Thanks.

    Tasmota with OpenHab or similar

Greetings, internet strangers. I just got a Martin Jerry Tasmota smart switch and would like to connect it to OpenHab or something similar. I have ruled out HomeAssistant because their docker image doesn’t have plugin support and I need to run it on an existing Debian 12 server. I know a little bit about mqtt but not much. If anyone could tell me how or recommend a guide to configuring a Tasmota switch with OpenHab or similar with a mqtt broker that would be great. Thanks. Edit: typo

    Decomplicating my setup

Hi. I am currently pirating on a dedicated server (Debian 12) running i2p, jellyfin, qBittorrent-nox, and a vpn. I tried mullvad for a bit but need to get air VPN set up now. My current setup to actually get content to jellyfin is this: 1. Try to find it on i2p, if there skip to step 4 2. SSH into server and turn on vpn + qBittorrent 3. Torrent Linux ISOs 4. SSH again and copy the file into jellyfin (really space inefficient, would love a solution to this in particular without shitloads of symlinks.) 5. Rename files to work with jellyfin 6. Login to jellyfin and refresh libraries 7. If Linux ISO not on i2p, cross seed Obviously this sucks. I know *arr would help, but I don’t know how to set up a VPN to not interfere with jellyfin connections to outside of LAN. How would you go about automating this? Do you think I am a complete idiot going about it all wrong? (I know I do) Have any of you found a solution to vpns interfering with jellyfin?

    Another pick me a distro

Hello, fellow internet users. I am currently using Debian but would like a distro to try the new Gnome on. I have been using Debian for a while and I love the stability, but would like newer packages. I also, for no rational reason, would like to be able to use the default package manager exclusively. I used Fedora before and liked it more than Debian (apart from that it felt vaguely Windowsey) but I would like to distance myself from the whole red hat thing. What distro do you think I should get?

What OS to run on fp4

I am looking at getting a fp4. (Pretty seriously, I am typing this on an older phone because I listed my newer phone on eBay to switch) I want a good, privacy focused operating system to run on it and was wondering what you all run and what your experiences have been. My main concerns are: 1. Support - I don’t want my operating system maintained by just 1 or 2 random people on github. 2. Features - I want the basic stuff to work but am concerned about the fingerprint sensor and cameras. 3. Privacy - I want something ideally completely degoogled. 4. Stability - I don’t know much about android but I use Debian lts if that tells you anything about the kind of update schedule I want. I know this is a lot to ask of an os but do you have any recommendations?

    Mullvad breaking nginx

Hi. I have been downloading Debian images through i2p, but because of the limited selection of Debian isos available on i2p I decided to get Mullvad to download them on the clear web (and add them to i2p of course.) I use a dedicated server for i2p, jellyfin, and nginx. When I added Mullvad and qBittorrent, Mullvad started proxying connections for nginx, breaking it. Does anyone know how to make Mullvad only proxy qBittorrent and nothing else, or at least not proxy nginx? I have tried adding the 5 ish pids for nginx to the mullvad split tunnel, but even then it doesn’t work. The only option I can think of right now is to either run mullvad and qbit in one docker container or run nginx on a separate machine. I have no idea how to do the docker thing and don’t want to buy new stuff for this. Are there any other options or does anyone know how to do the docker thing?

    Herd Mentality in this Community

Hi. I recently had some issues with my lemmy client which made me accidentally post the exact same thing here twice. The posts were about privacy on my school issued computer. I could have made it more clear, but I wanted privacy from the companies that make their spyware not from the school that owns the computer. Anyway, as of now one post has more than 40 upvotes and less than 5 down. The other has 10 up and 5 down as well as significantly less helpful and more critical comments. My hypothesis is whether the early comments were helpful or critical determined what other people said. I am curios to see what everyone thinks of this.

    School Spyware

Hi. My school just started issuing devices last year, and they have this Lightspeed spyware on them. Last year I was able to remove it by booting into Linux from a flash drive and moving the files to a separate drive and then back at the end of the year. This year I have heard from sources that they have ways of detecting someone booting from Linux so I am hesitant to do that option. My only other idea is to buy an old laptop off eBay that looks like it and install Linux on it. I could probably get one for about 50€. Does anyone have any cheaper ideas? Oh also talking to IT isn’t an option.

    /e/os vs graphene

Does anyone know how /e/os compares to graphene os for privacy? I am thinking of getting a murena fairphone which comes with /e/os but supports custom OSs and am leaning towards graphene, but don't know much about e.

    i2p
i2p setup and remote access on debian (server and client)

Hello, I am trying to set up i2p on my dedicated server. I had it set up but it seems to have broke recently after messing with some other services on the server (don't ask I honestly don't remember what I changed.) I uninstalled and reinstalled i2p+, and configured it in ~/.i2p/clients.config.d/00... to listen on 192.168.1.1/24 and restarted the router. After that didn't work I tried creating an ssh tunnel to it to access it as localhost, but that didn't load and ssh returned the error "channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused." If anyone knows anything about setting up a dedicated i2p router on LAN, please help. Edit - Found this in the logs: 2023/08/02 10:32:58 | INFO | Unable to bind the Router Console to any address on port 7657 Edit 2 - Update: Upon reinstalling i2p+ completely, I was able to get in with an ssh tunnel. Now I will try to open it up to the network and document my changes here in case anyone else runs into the same problem. Edit 3 - Update: I realized that I am stupid. I was putting the wrong ip in the configuration files in clients.config.d because I thought it was the ip of allowed clients not the ip that it is reachable by. Once I also changed the settings in ~/.i2p/router.config it would redirect to an https version which wouldn't load. I added routerconsole.redirectToHTTPS=false in router.config and it loaded an http page. Next I need to allow lan connections on so I can use it as a dedicated router.

    Private & Pirate Gaming

Hi, I was originally going to post this in a piracy community, but I think it fits better here. I didn’t see anything in the rules about piracy, but I apologize if it (talking about it rather) isn’t allowed here. Anyway, I mostly use foss for better privacy, but I want to be able to fire up the occasional game. I haven’t played any proprietary games for a while, but would like to. I want to know how piracy impacts privacy. I imagine not having to phone home every 2min for drm would allow me to run offline, but I may want to play with friends or something, and was wondering generally what you all recommend for gaming. Obligatory info about my setup: CPU: Ryzen 5000 GPU: Nvidia 3000 ] OS: Debian 12 DE: Gnome (whatever version ships with deb 12) Whatever it’s called: x11 I also have a dedicated server if pi-hole blacklists exist for this. Another note: I apologize if this is considered the promotion of proprietary software, but I am more looking for tips on minimizing the risks of proprietary software rather than trying to promote it. For what it’s worth, I always try to convince my friends to switch to GNU+Linux as well as other foss. TLDR: How can I game privately on debian 12? Thank you in advance for any responses.

    I2p with sonarr

Hi, I posted this recently in a separate piracy community but I didn't realize that this one became the main one. I want to configure sonarr to work with i2p torrents and only torrent over i2p. qBittorrent seems to be the only foss torrent client with both i2p and sonarr support, but I can't get i2p set up with it. Does anyone here know how to set up i2p with qB or any other clients I could use? Please include detail, I am an idiot.

    Youtube adblock blocking

I know the topic of whether adblock is piracy is debated, but I am guessing there are a lot of adblock users here and I was wondering if anyone has seen the youtube adblock warning message in the wild. I use ublock origin and still haven't seen it once.

How to host server outside network

Does anyone have any advice on hosting a server to the outside world? I intend to host a Jellyfin media server and want to be able to access it remotely. I was leaning towards hosting a VPN on my network with a good password but I don't know much about that. I am looking for a free option that ideally doesn't require proprietary software and can be completely hosted locally. For reasons that I won't go into, I am a little concerned about my isp seeing the traffic to the media server. I know I am being paranoid but I don't really care. I imagine if I host it through port forwarding on the router but set up HTTPS that would encrypt the traffic and stop my ISP from seeing it, but I don't know if hosting a VPN would be easier / more secure. Thoughts?

    Advice on Jellyfin server hardware

Hi, I am looking to make my first dedicated jellyfin server rather than running it on my desktop, but don't know what gpu to get. I will have only a few users and want to avoid Nvidia because I will be on linux + foss drivers. Any recommendations?
