I downloaded the app about an hour before I left that comment. It wasn’t fixed for me, same with the flashbang issue.

I love the app so far, it’s beautiful and I enjoy the themes a lot. I think my Lemmy usage will skyrocket now that I have this app haha (I’ve been using the mobile web version all this while). One suggestion I have is to maybe reduce the size of the upvote/downvote buttons in the comments because they’re pretty large compared to the text, but this is far from a priority of course. Keep up the good work.

This makes me sick honestly. r/place is one of the nicest memories I have of Reddit and now they’re using it as a cheap tactic to bait us to come back. Really a low blow.

But it doesn’t make any sense, no matter how you spin it. In the aftermath of one highly controversial decision, instead of laying low for a while to let the dust settle, they decide to make another one. And this time targeting the group that happens to be the least likely aggravated by the last one (since people paying for Premium likely use the official app) and also the ones that directly bring in income. I can definitely see this ending well.

Man. What the actual hell is Reddit doing? They’ve been making the most suicidal business decisions this year. Blocking third party apps, they piss off a huge active portion of their user base but sure, you could say they weren’t paying anyway. But now they’re screwing over their PAYING users? I don’t even know what they expect at this point.

Firstly, the alt-right is far from a modern issue. And secondly it’s nothing to do with feeling bad for them. I couldn’t agree less with the nonsense they’re saying there. I’m saying that defederating them doesn’t “prevent the issue in the first place” at all. Isolating communities only makes them get more extreme over time. Refusing to let them interact with us only causes their beliefs to be echoed and amplified in their communities. And I should clarify again, by no means am I saying that they should be allowed to promote their hateful messages here. If they break the rules of our instance, here in our instance, they should be banned, simple.

I agree with this. Isolating communities that have odious beliefs only lead to those beliefs being echoed and intensified in their small spaces, and hence become more extreme over time. It’s not “nipping the issue in the bud” like many people seem to think it is, it’s the complete opposite. Past a certain line we definitely should cut ties, but I guess it’s debatable where that line should be drawn.

Our instance’s rules are for our own instance. If they come over here and start spewing ridiculous nonsense, then sure, we should start banning them. For now they aren’t even causing much trouble. If they do in the future then I’d support defederating, but I disagree with jumping the gun.

Your instance being defeded is like if the mods of a subreddit decided to ban all members of your subreddit from accessing their subreddit, and banned all their members from accessing your subreddit.

If your instance admin deletes your instance, it would be like if Gmail shut down overnight. Everything being hosted on Gmail including your accounts would be gone. But the other email services would still be up and email as a whole would still work.

Yeah, I’m not too concerned with the users who go “Looks interesting but a little too confusing for me right now so I’ll pass.” What bothers me is the ones who outright spread “Lol these alternatives are shit, Lemmy will never take off, too counterintuitive, this site has no future!!!!”. Like chill guys, it takes time. Not your thing yet? Fine. But why be so quick to outright dismiss it?

Fair, but I find it so strange that these people would be in a sub called RedditAlternatives but go “nope, nope, nah, nuh-uh” at every alternative presented just because the alternative isn’t exactly the same as Reddit, without even giving them a chance. Lemmy isn’t even that complicated, I’ve supported several users through the jump by answering their questions on the process in DMs, and so far all of them eventually got it after some explanation. But the rest of the commenters act like you need to open a backend console and run 50 lines of code just to create an account. I’m just… saddened, honestly.

What’s with the cynicism towards Lemmy on r/RedditAlternatives and Reddit in general?

For a sub that’s supposed to promote Reddit alternatives, there sure is a lot of pessimism on there. I see so many people dismissing Lemmy and kbin already for being too inaccessible, the UI is clunky, it’s hard to pick up etc and saying these sites will never take off. But why? Of course a platform in its infancy will have hurdles to overcome, and it takes time for devs to implement all the QOL features to make the site more intuitive. And when I see people trying to explain how Lemmy works, people just respond “Too complicated, I’m not reading all that etc.” Do people expect a fully functional Reddit clone with all the same features to conveniently exist somewhere they can hop to? Do people not realise that Reddit itself was just as confusing when users migrated from Digg all those years ago? Do they not realise sites take time to mature? RedditAlternatives is the only subreddit I still use because I want to help people make the jump, but it’s kinda disheartening seeing the attitudes there. Anyone has a more optimistic take on this?

Not all mods or are sold on Lemmy though, same with Redditors in general. Even on r/RedditAlternatives I see so many posts and comments saying Lemmy will never take off because it’s not user friendly enough, too complicated, etc. I find it pretty disheartening honestly. Of course a platform in its infancy will have bumps and hurdles to sort out. The fact that they’re dismissing Lemmy so quickly is just saddening.

But I feel we’ve already had a promising start. As QOL changes arrive and UI slowly improves I think we’ll see more and more people trickling in. Just gotta pray the spark doesn’t fizzle out before then.

I know account migration is already on the list of features planned/considered by Lemmy but I think in the future one thing they might consider is community migration. So if an instance is dying/the admins decide to go wacko, the owners of a community can choose to pack up and move the entire community to be hosted on another instance, data and all. Of course the data transfers would probably take a huge ton of time and the Lemmy devs probably have a lot on their plate right now, but it’s something I see as possible in the future.

I’m honestly amazed by all of this, watching the birth of a platform unfold. I think I’ve been chronically online on Lemmy for the past few days xD Here’s hoping Lemmy will really take off.

Edit: one other thing I really hope to see is ex-Reddit 3PA devs picking this up! I’m not sure how many devs will ever want to make that gamble again after being brutally fucked over by Reddit, but I can only hope someday.

I find it ironic that they say fake niceness will only scare people off, but all the “ethos engineering” only promotes a culture of fake niceness. I don’t buy all this “walled utopia” idealism, especially since this place isn’t like Discord with private servers, but a public interconnected forum. Why choose to set up on the Fediverse if you’re not open to ”strangers” accessing your community? But oh well, I think they’ll probably defederate more and more over time (or switch to whitelist).

True. The larger the instance the more likely some other user has already searched a community that you’re interested in, so the more results you’ll probably get through your instance’s native search. One way I’ve found to get around it is sites like lemmyverse.net, but it can be a bit inconvenient to use a separate site for your search engine, then paste the link back in to the native search feature.

My biggest fear is if some corpos decide to set up mega instances and start dominating Lemmy by doing this, since corpos probably have the best budgets to set up massive server infrastructure. I think the more Lemmy grows the more attention it’ll get from corpos, which is not great.

I don’t think we should reevaluate our policy just to get 1 specific instance to refederate us…. Anyway, Beehaw’s mindset has always been exclusive and restrictive, despite being a larger instance. Even if we switch to closed registration, they may disagree with our vetting process. It’s just part of their community ideals of creating a “safe space” aligned with their “community values”. I completely disagree with their course, but it’s their instance, so whatever, their call.

Just a heads up for anyone looking for a quick an easy way to find Lemmy communities

I think one of the most confusing parts of Lemmy is searching for new communities, especially because the search function on each instance won’t show communities that no users of that instance have interacted with yet. So I wanted to share this site I discovered a while ago: https://lemmyverse.net/communities It loads pretty fast and is a surprisingly efficient way to find the largest community for a specific topic across all the different Lemmy instances. Hope this helps some and if anyone has better recommendations feel free to share.
