I don't know how you could train people to get out of their cars. The whole situation is bus-ted. Perhaps there's subway to do it, but I'm at a loss as to how.
We need some action from the bike-ameral legal system. Currently, supporters of public transit are underground, but they need to expose car-centric planning as the utter tram it is.

Military stuff is out of the picture since they established their trade with CCP and NK for rockets
Not all rockets are made equally. The NK rockets, artillery barrels and artillery shells are much worse than they could manufacture with western components. A degradation in quality leading to less accuracy which lessens the battlefield impact is still a positive step.
It also means that China can take advantage of Russia to get much more than it could usually get for their gear. China is not helping Russia out of the goodness of it's heart or some ideological reason. They're taking advantage.
I wonder if sanctions targeting non-consumer products critical to producing them can lead to long pauses
Interesting question. I have no idea. I'm pretty confident all sanctions so far are for gas, oil, and military/dual-use technology.

She was a big champion of Medicare for all in 2020. It is indeed a shame she isn't talking about it now like she did last election. Judging from her 2020 rhetoric though, it is definitely something she would be open to doing if given a cooperative government, I think.
Barbarian 2 weeks ago • 100%
Well, there's not much she can do atm as vice-president. It's very well-known that Biden is very pro-Israeli.
Her rhetoric on the topic as a candidate has been very mixed. She's been improving since she had that meeting with Uncommitted leaders. Hopefully she can have a better plan than "ask nicely for a ceasefire" to present to voters before the election.

Maybe. The point of the sanctions isn't to cause unrest though, as I said, it's to apply pressure to the state. If it happens to cause some unrest, that's an unlikely side-benefit.

Hungary is blocking every single sanction package on Russia. They do not send aid to Ukraine at all and even block aid shipments through Hungary.
All of these are very fair points. My point was that they're happy to publicly call for "peace and an end to the war" while throwing Ukraine under a bus, but simultaneously they're for NATO protecting them against Russia.
They also blocked Swedens NATO membership for ages.
If I'm not mistaken, this wasn't a pro-Russian thing, this was a blackmail NATO allies for concessions in exchange for agreeing thing.

To piggyback on @Syntha@sh.itjust.works, the point of sanctions is to create an extreme economic cost to a state as a bargaining chip. Stop doing the thing we don't like and you get your trade back. Unfortunately, states control the national currency (most of the time), which means anyone who uses that currency also gets hit. There is no way around that.
Politically speaking, a majority of Russians have been utterly disenfranchised from politics, repeating the refrain "I'm not political" like it's a magic spell that will ward off the consequences of their government. Consequently I'm not that sad about them experiencing a bit of economic hardship. Maybe it'll help them realize that politics isn't just for politicians.

He does display more than those traditionally masculine traits. He portrays himself as a protector of the vulnerable and a provider. Making sure women and children are safe and provided for is very traditionally masculine. He has made it a point of his political career to help children, and as an ex-member of the national guard, he can claim that "protector" archetype.
This is not to say that there aren't problems with traditional masculinity, but there's more to it than just family.

The city watch novels are by far my favourite. Jingo is especially amazing as a lighthearted deconstruction of xenophobia and how it functions, as well as another big theme of modern politics I can't talk about because it's a huge spoiler.
Barbarian 2 weeks ago • 100%
True. It's not surprising, it's just annoying. We won't have a change in politics until the older generation dies off. They already lost a lot of power when the DNA started actually enforcing anti-corruption measures, so they've gone from the only dominant force in Romanian politics to one of the dominant forces.

It's a special experience. Others have gone over the broad strokes, so I'll instead describe my two favourite characters in the entirety of fiction.
Sam Vimes is a pragmatic, down to earth everyman. In a world full of crime, racism, magic, and political shenanigans, he tries (and mostly succeeds) to be true to his beliefs and convictions. Convictions like female dwarves deserve to identify as female if they want to, no matter how much dwarven society despises any dwarf not sticking to male identities. That anyone and everyone deserves to be hired and promoted on merit, no matter the stigma around ghouls, zombies and werewolves. He cares about his people and his city, and really tries. He may not fully understand your culture or religion, but he will defend your right to it to the death.
Rincewind is the opposite of the hero archetype. He's the coward with a thousand backs. A failed wizard, because the immensely powerful spell living in his head scares off all the other spells, all he wants is to live a nice, calm, peaceful life. Against his will, he's dragged from adventure to adventure and runs away from every exciting and mystical thing in the world. He's seen everything, done everything, and never wanted to step out of the Unseen University.

Commentators I've seen blame the lack of defence on incompetent commanders that aren't reporting losses, lack of construction equipment for preparing fallback lines and lack of communication between units. There are apparently many cases of electronic warfare units jamming Ukrainian drones because they don't know what the drone unit is doing. In short: doesn't sound like a problem that can be solved by just adding more bodies.

[Join-Lemmy.org instance list](https://join-lemmy.org/instances) - Official instance list. [Lemmy Explorer](https://lemmyverse.net) - Nice list of all instances with sorting and filters. [Fedidb instance list](https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy) - Much faster to load & browse than Lemmy Explorer, but less options for sorting and filtering. Great if you just wanna check the top few instances quickly [Fediverse Observer map](https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/map) - Shows where all the Lemmy servers are physically located [Fediverse Observer list](https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list) - Probably my least favourite of the options I know about, but it does exist. Fedidb and Lemmy Explorer are better.
If you look at the top ~20 servers on fedidb, they are very clearly botswarms. Either intentionally set up that way, or accidentally due to turning off protections and not deleting users. You can tell this because they have 70,000 registered users, but only 10 of them are active. I believe we should pre-emptively defederate with botswarms before they're turned on. If the instance owners clear out the bots on their instances (like [lemmy.ninja did](https://lemmy.ninja/post/30492)) then they should be immediately refederated. I don't know about you guys, but I don't want this place to be drowned in spam as soon as they're activated.
Just so people are aware, Kbin users will not see your comments or get your votes. If you comment on a Kbin post, only other users on sh.itjust.works will see it. We are effectively defederated due to this bug. This affects all instances on 0.18.0, as far as I understand it.

After that, they'd worked for most of the major corps by this point, so I wanted to do something in South America with Aztechnology. > > As a starting point, I ran a wetwork run. Nothing too crazy for this group at this stage of development. Get in to a AA corp HQ, kill a high-level executive, get out. What I wanted to happen is that they'd talk to an NPC in the room clearly signalling that she was impressed and wanted them to do a job for her. > > Oh boy, never count on your players to act rationally. They do the job pretty much as expected: decker gets into the security systems, face gets them through the front door, street sam sniper set up on the building across the road, and they finally get to the point where they can open the bulletproof windows for support fire as they go for the target. > > Face & mage go into the room, bullshit a bit with the target about some computer troubles, data tap goes on, decker opens the glass, target goes down. The NPC says she's impressed with the work and wants to give them a commlink number, maybe they'll call it if they want some higher pay. > > I barely get out "Impressive..." before the player playing the street sam says "I take the shot". > > "What shot?" > > "The shot on the witness" > > "Hey, just giving you a heads up here as the GM, she's offering you a..." > > "Don't care, I'm taking the shot. Just click the link above if you want to see the full breakdown. > TL;DR: The book is overall pretty good. It's not a literary masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but the chapters that work, work really well. There are also chapters that are **awful**, and you should just straight-up ignore. There are also some very questionable editing decisions that mean you have to cross-reference things across both ends of the book, but this is something that can be overcome by taking notes and assembling a timeline yourself. This started as a review, but ended up being more of a GM guide on how to use the book. I hope nobody minds terribly. >Overall, this book is really all over the place. Some terrible editing decisions, an awful chapter that should have never made it past the draft stage, and some questionable organizational decisions, but the chapters that work really work. I think it’s well worth it just for the Detroit Rupture/Detroit Now and UCrASh chapters. There’s lots of potential shadowruns here, and if the official timeline is too tight and you want your players to see more of this important moment in UCAS history, you can always tweak the timeline yourself to lengthen or shorten it. I really do think there’s a lot of value in this book, but it is a bit of a slog to get to it.

[i have already related](https://beehaw.org/post/520044?scrollToComments=true) how difficult dealing with the explosion has been just constrained to this instance for us four Admins, and increasingly we're being confronted with *external* vectors we have to deal with that have further stressed our capabilities (elaborated on below). > > an unfortunate reality we've also found is we just don't have the tools or the time here to parse out all the good from all the bad. all we have is a nuke and some pretty rudimentary mod powers that don't scale well. we have a list of improvements we'd like to see both on the moderation side of Lemmy and federation if at all possible--but we're unanimous in the belief that we can't wait on what we want to be developed here. separately, we want to do this *now*, while the band-aid can be ripped off with substantially less pain. > > aside from/complementary to what's mentioned above, our reason for defederating, by and large, boils down to: > - these two instances' open registration policy, which is extremely problematic for us given how federation works and how trivial it makes trolling, harassment, and other undesirable behavior; > - the disproportionate number of moderator actions we take against users of these two instances, and the general amount of time we have to dedicate to bad actors on those two instances; > - our need to preserve not only a moderated community but a vibe and general feeling this is *actually* a safe space for our users to participate in; > - and the reality that fulfilling our ethos is simply not possible when we not only have to account for our own users but have to account for literally tens of thousands of new, completely unvetted users, some of whom explicitly see spaces like this as desirable to troll and disrupt and others of whom simply don't care about what our instance stands for > > as Gaywallet puts it, in our discussion of whether to do this: > > > There's a lot of soft moderating that happens, where people step in to diffuse tense situations. But it's not just that, there's a vibe that comes along with it. Most people need a lot of trust and support to open up, and it's really hard to trust and support who's around you when there are bad actors. People shut themselves off in various ways when there's more hostility around them. They'll even shut themselves off when there's fake nice behavior around. There's a lot of nuance in modding a community like this and it's not just where we take moderator actions- sometimes people need to step in to diffuse, to negotiate, to help people grow. This only works when everyone is on the same page about our ethos and right now we can't even assess that for people who aren't from our instance, so we're walking a tightrope by trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. That isn't sustainable forever and especially not in the face of massive growth on such a short timeframe. > > > > Explicitly safe spaces in real life typically aren't open to having strangers walk in off the street, even if they have a bouncer to throw problematic people out. A single negative interaction might require a lot of energy to undo. > > and, to reiterate: we understand that a *lot* of people legitimately and fairly use these instances, and this is going to be painful while it's in effect. but we hope you can understand why we're doing this. our words, when we talk about building something better here, are not idle platitudes, and we are not out to build a space that grows at any cost. we want a *better* space, and we think this is necessary to do that right now. if you disagree we understand that, but we hope you can if nothing else come away with the understanding it was an informed decision. > > this is also not a permanent judgement (or a moral one on the part of either community's owner, i should add--we just have differing interests here and that's fine). in the future as tools develop, cultures settle, attitudes and interest change, and the wave of newcomers settles down, we'll reassess whether we feel capable of refederating with these communities. > > thanks for using our site folks.

It looks like kbin.social is in the final stages of migrating their site, and merging a whole bunch of improvements. Having their ~5k users federating with us again will be nice

Very well-made detailed maps, but the costs add up quickly if you're a regular user. I'm not a gigantic fan of paying 1-4 USD for each individual map a-la-carte rather than paying for a pack. However, there are *cough* alternate means of acquiring these maps on certain sites using certain peer-to-peer download protocols. Please remember to be reasonable though: if you like the products and feel it adds value, support the artists.
An excellent map pack I use quite often. If you're not using foundry, you can get the maps [here](https://www.patreon.com/fragmaps). His work is awesome. If you use them and have the spare money, please consider contributing to his work.
Currently shredding my 11 year account with 32k comment karma. It feels pretty good, to be honest. I have shreddit running, and I'm refreshing my profile on RiF. I'm watching the most recent comment getting further and further in the past, and deleting manually any post I see. As soon as that's all done, deleting the account.
I'm a little confused. So I crossposted something from the Shadowrun community (nobody's interested in an AAR, that's fine, no issue). Weird thing is, I got a downvote on the post, even though technically it's on beehaw, which got me thinking. This downvote is NOT visible on the beehaw server, but is visible in my server. Does that mean that if a user outside beehaw makes a post in a beehaw community, that post can get downvoted by non-beehaw members? If so, how does that work? Compare this: https://beehaw.org/post/485342 With that: https://sh.itjust.works/post/24091

First job, it's gotta be a gimme, right? Met my team just before the meet. Weirdest bunch of oddballs I've ever seen > > C: Come on, can't be that bad, we ran with the Vory and they were nutjobs > > A: Think less homicidal weird, and more just strange. Some Native American dwarf who won't take his head-dress off called Shaker, an ex-cop called Mother Hen for some strange reason and an ex-racer called Brundy. Anyways, the meet goes ok, but the Johnson was a nervous wreck. Didn't even bat an eye when we almost doubled his asking fee. Some Vory lieutenant called Kuznetsov is leaning on him hard for his gang to "volunteer" to fight their new war with the Triads, and he wants blackmail material to make it go away. Whole thing smells fishy as hell. Why this gang? Why now? > > C: So you said no, right? > > A: Like hell I did, not for that paycheck. After we're done talking, we realize everyone forgot to put a white noise generator on the table and some guy started blackmailing us. > > C: Heh. Chummers. > > A: Well, we paid him off and that Hen stole the dude's white noise generator. No idea why. Maybe out of embarrassment or something? Anyways, so we start doing some digging. Brundy knows who the Johnson was: some hotshot racer called Nitro. Competes in the Seattle Sprint, some underground race. I called some old Vory friends and found out our guy is running it. Gotta be connected, right? > > C: Uh-huh. And was it? > > A: I'm getting there! So, Brundy goes to register in the race to get more info there while I do a bit more digging on the matrix. We find that Kuznetsov's been getting into arguments with some racers. More specifically, a racer named Ferguson who's gone off the grid for a while. while Shaker and I went to make a housecall. Ferguson's car's been out to the Redmond Barrens once a month for a long time now for quite a bit, according to the gridguide on it. Weird as hell. Even stranger was when he answered the door with a gun behind his back. Shaker was absolutely oblivious and started asking about Kuznetsov, and the guy damn near exploded at us. Told us to leave or else. > > C: So I'm guessing you beat him up and got him to answer a few more questions? > > A: This is Seattle, not Bucharest darling. We do have to be a LITTLE more subtle than that. I just put a mark on the commlink in his pocket and we left. Just a burner though. We all gathered up to figure out what we had so far. Hen had talked to his friends in the Knights Errant, no luck there. Brundy found out the favorite to win the race is some guy called "Zone" and that Kuznetsov has been strangely successful in his bets for a very long time now > > C: Insider urban brawl kinda successful, or rigs the races kinda successful? > > A: We're thinking rigs the races kinda successful. Just as we were about to split up, the commlink goes active. Wouldn't ya know it, he's using this burner to call his wife and kids out in the East coast. Sounds very much like he got them to safety. No idea why, or safety from what. > > C: So what happened next? > > A: What happened next? What happened next is I sent you a message. Listen, ask around any Vory contacts you have left over there, see if anybody there knows him. I feel like I'm going in blind here. JC, our fixer is sending us some backup. > > C: I mean, sure? Imma preface this by saying that I'm not an admin or mod here, these are just my thoughts & advice on the matter. You've noticed that a community doesn't exist on Lemmy. I'm going to assume you've checked the [community browser](https://browse.feddit.de), and seen that that specific community doesn't exist. So, you've gone to communities, typed in the name, and are about to hit create. Well, hold up a second. There's an INSANE amount of community spam going on in lemmy.ml, and it looks like it's starting here to a much lesser degree. Some questions you should ask: 1. Are you creating this community just to create it? By that I mean, are you willing to put in the work as the moderator if it does take off? 2. Is it a niche community of a larger subset that has a thriving community or a completely new category? 3. Are you willing to regularly post stuff to start seeding comments & advertise it in the relevant places? If the answer to any of these is no, get your cursor off that create button and go join the bigger communities. It just makes it harder to find communities that aren't 100% dead when half of them are dead-ends created just because 'they exist on Reddit'. Once there are enough people are visiting !gaming@beehaw.org, they spill over into !rpg@lemmy.ml if they want more focused TTRPG stuff. Once there are enough people on !rpg@lemmy.ml, they'll spill over to my Shadowrun group. Lots of communities are fractal in nature, and people are skipping a few steps. The userbase needs time to grow and mature. Please think before you make a community.
