Lemmy guide and F.A.Q.

### Table of contents * What is Lemmy? * What is an instance? * How do I join a community from another instance? * How can I find interesting communities? * Why are image uploads on lemm.ee limited to 100kb? * How can I post images hosted on external services? * How can I ensure my community on lemm.ee gets found on other instances? * How can I take over a community with inactive mods on lemm.ee? * I'm still lost, how can I get assistance? ## What is Lemmy? One great way to understand Lemmy is to check out [this simple infographic](https://i.imgur.com/b2QuYAR.png) (author: [@ulu_mulu@lemmy.world](/u/ulu_mulu@lemmy.world)) But if you want it in text form: Lemmy is a link aggregator, in many ways similar to Reddit, but with one key difference - there is no one central authority controlling Lemmy. The code is open source, and more importantly, there are hundreds of Lemmy instances which are all independently run. Even though instances are independent, they are all part of the Lemmy network, and thus, **users of one instance can participate in communities of other instances.** ## What is an instance? Lemmy instances are servers which run the Lemmy software. https://lemm.ee (where this post lives on) is one instance, but there are also many others. There can be several key differences in instances: * Some instances are small and run out of home servers, some instances are large and run on commercial hardware (lemm.ee is one of the latter) * Each instance can define their own set of rules (lemm.ee rules are visible in the sidebar on our front page) * Instances can decide whether downvotes are enabled for their users (lemm.ee users have the ability to downvote) * Some instances may choose to limit community creation to admins only (lemm.ee allows all users to create communities) * Some instances have a tight focus, others are general-purpose (lemm.ee is the latter!) If you ever find yourself unhappy with your instance, you are always free to create an account on another one and continue using Lemmy. Unlike centralized platforms, you always have another place to go! *⚠️ Lemmy supports migrating your account from one instance to another, which makes it quite painless to move. However, your post history will remain on your old account when you create a new one on another instance.* ## How do I join a community from another instance? **Option 1**: go to the list of communities by clicking the "Communities" link on the top navbar. Open the "All" tab and you will be able to browse and subscribe to any community from other instances that at least one lemm.ee user has previously subscribed to. **Option 2**: if you know the exact name of the community you wish to join (for example, [!gaming@beehaw.org](/c/gaming@beehaw.org)), you can navigate to the search view by clicking the looking glass icon on the top navbar. Enter the exact name of the community into the search box, including the leading "!": `!gaming@beehaw.org`. If at least one person from lemm.ee has previously subscribed to this community, then you should immediately see a link to open the community and subscribe to it. Important caveat: if you are the first person to search for a community, then Lemmy will initially tell you that no results were found. Don't worry, if the community exists, then lemm.ee will begin syncing it and you will be able to successfully search for it again in a couple of minutes. Important caveat 2: if you are the first lemm.ee user to subscribe to a community from another instance, then historical posts and comments will not be immediately synced. This is a limitation of the Lemmy software currently. However, if old posts start getting some new activity after you've subscribed (like a new comment or edit), then that will trigger a sync and the old posts should start showing up for you as well. ## How can I find interesting communities? You have several options! * You can browse our [list of all communities](/communities/listing_type/All/page/1). This includes any communities from other instances which have at least one subscriber from lemm.ee. * You can check for ads for interesting communities in [!newcommunities@lemmy.world](/c/newcommunities@lemmy.world) * You can browse (or even search for keywords) at [https://browse.feddit.de](https://browse.feddit.de) * Similarly to the previous point, you can check out [https://lemmyverse.net](https://lemmyverse.net) - bonus tip, if you set your home instance on this website, then all community links will lead to your home instance! ### Why are image uploads on lemm.ee limited to 500kb? One of the scaling issues so far with Lemmy is multimedia storage. Several instances report growing their storage by significant amounts daily - if lemm.ee grew at that same pace, I would start seeing increased infrastructure bills very quickly (within months, if not weeks). To help mitigate this, users are asked to use external image hosting providers as much as possible. On lemm.ee, we currently only allow image uploads for images up to 500kb in size. 500kb was specifically chosen as it SHOULD cover most needs for any avatars, and possibly even simple banners for communities. ### How can I post images hosted on external services? For posts, just submit the image URL directly (in other words, copy the image URL into the "URL" field of the post you are creating). Additionally, for text posts and comments, you can use the following syntax: `![alt text](image url)`, for example `![lemm.ee logo](https://imgur.com/earIilI.png)` results in: ![lemm.ee logo](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FearIilI.png) ## How can I ensure my community on lemm.ee gets found on other instances? * First of all, you should ensure that your community looks welcoming to new users. If your sidebar has useful info and there's perhaps some activity in the community already, then new users are much more likely to subscribe * Once you have your new community set up, your community will soon become automatically visible in our local communities list at lemm.ee, as well as the global community indexes like [https://browse.feddit.de](https://browse.feddit.de) or [https://lemmyverse.net](https://lemmyverse.net) * If you want even more exposure for your community, I recommend making a post about it in [!newcommunities@lemmy.world](/c/newcommunities@lemmy.world) ## How can I take over a community with inactive mods on lemm.ee? 1. Make a post in the community you want to take over 2. DM me (@sunaurus) 1-2 sentences about what your plans are for the community, and a link to the post you made in the community If the community you want really has no active mods, then I will be happy to pass ownership to you! ## I’m still lost, how can I get assistance? If you feel like anything in this guide is unclear, or if you have a general question which you believe will be useful to others in the future, please just drop a comment with your question under this post and myself or other helpful members of our community can try and help you out. If you're having any issues that you feel are not relevant as a comment here, then feel free to post a thread and tag me in our [`!support`](/c/support) community.

Sorting posts not working at all, some communities not updated.

So I had made a post regarding sorting posts not working, but I have noticed another issue where some communities just don't have some older posts. I have tried both on web and on android app, and it's the same, tweaked some settings too. A demo video (GIF) showcasing the problem and my account settings are attached in below Imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/8X8AQpI

Lemm.ee is still broken after the update. Communities are dying because of this. How to migrate a community to another instance? https://phiresky.github.io/lemmy-federation-state/site?domain=lemm.ee

A friend and me built up a small but fine community by putting in a lot of effort over several months. However, since the update lemm.ee remains broken. Constant loading errors / error messages and worst, the not working outgoing federation causes our community to slowly die. Is there a way to migrate our community, including our subscribers to another, functional instance? ![](https://i.imgur.com/usIblCv.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/RABhOWb.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/cmkgS7I.jpg)

Lemm.ee V19.0 issues

I've noticed a distinct degradation in speed on lemm.ee since the upgrade. The website seems fine but any app appears to struggle with the lemm.ee site. The only exception appears to be Voyager app and it may be that as a web app it doesn't appear to have the same problem. Jerboa can't login, says can't connect to instance, this is not a specific v19 issue as I have an account on reddthat.com which is also running v19.0 and that logs in without issue. Voyager struggles to load my profile. I migrated here from fmhy and then feddit.uk after it appeared to be abandoned, I'd really not like to migrate again but it's starting look like that's the only option ;-(

Outgoing federation broken?

I just noticed that all of my comments for the last few days don't show up in the parent instance of the post. It is happening in several different instances, so it seems like it's probably an issue on the lemm.ee side of things. So far comments aren't appearing in 'Lemmy.world', 'Lemmy.ca', or 'Sh.itjust.works' While looking into this, I also noticed other lemm.ee users posts that aren't appearing when switching instances. *Suddenly got some interaction with the lost posts, as well as a few comments from 'lemm.ee' on the other account I've been using, which matches up to [sunaurus's post on updating to 19.1.](https://lemm.ee/post/19843583) Glad to see things appear to be working as expected again. Hopefully 0.19 doesn't have anymore surprises for us!

lemm.ee is not working properly anymore since the last update

Constant errors and timeouts have made lemm.ee almost unusable since the last update. On top of that it seems like posts are not visible from other instances anymore. I made a post on lemm.ee, using my lemm.ee account and then switched to my lemmy.world account, tried finding the post and it´s just not there, switched back to my lemm.ee account to make sure and the post was there. Lemm.ee is not functioning properly any more since the last update. Is there a fix in sight and if not, can we please downgrade back to BE: 0.18.5, which worked much, much better than this mess?

Sudden decrease in votes on apocalypticart@feddit.de after 0.19 upgrade

cross-posted from: https://lemm.ee/post/18778701 > This is the chart of the votes for the latest posts on !apocalypticart@feddit.de. > > This may be just a coincidence, but I find a bit weird that the votes went down to almost zero exactly when lemm.ee[^1] and feddit.de[^2] upgraded to v0.19. > > [^1]: the instance from where I'm posting > [^2]: the community instance EDIT: From [a comment](https://lemm.ee/comment/7514419) by [@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl](https://feddit.nl/u/Fleppensteijn) in the original post: > I’m getting a LemmyAPIException when I try to upvote since yesterday. Now I notice I’m getting the same error when I try to post from the app. EDIT-2: [Another comment](https://lemm.ee/comment/7514556) by [@maegul@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/u/maegul): > the question then becomes when the last post was made to apocalyptic art. From my quick glance it was 4 days ago on the lemmy.ml mirror, which seems behind the most recent posts on the actual community. Lemmy.ml is on the newest version. > > So my guess is that there’s some general federation issue, possibly on the feddit.de end, which is causing some things to get dropped.

Outgoing links in new posts on Lemm.ee are now being weirdly disabled (see examples)

Just now I tried adding to our community's [**FAQ**][ (Where can I pick up such comics, both in physical and digital format?)](https://lemm.ee/post/2890991#:~:text=Where%20can%20I%20pick%20up%20such%20comics%2C%20both%20in%20physical%20and%20digital%20format%3F). Yet for some reason: [**Amazone.es**](amazon.es), [**Lireka**](lireka.com), [**Rakuten**](rakuten.com), [**Momox**](Momox-Shop.fr), [**AbeBooks**](abebooks.com), [**FNac**](fnac.com) and [**Giver Joseph**](gibert.com) ...are now producing the message below, also killing the links: >PAGE NOT FOUND > > The page you are looking for does not exist. > > Click here to return to your homepage and now: > Error! > There was an error on the server. Try refreshing your browser. If that doesn't work, come back at a later time. If the problem persists, you can seek help in the Lemmy support community or Lemmy Matrix room. > > If you would like to reach out to one of lemm.ee admins for support, try the following Matrix addresses: @sunaurus:matrix.org > The server returned this error: {{error}}. This may be useful for admins and developers to diagnose and fix the error__** Just to be clear: as you can see in the link code, in NONE of those outgoing links (as usual) did I attempt to draw back to my native instance (lemm.ee). By comparison, look at how all the other outgoing links worked perfectly fine across the very same post: https://lemm.ee/post/2890991 What the heck is up with all that, mates...? **EDIT**: Okay, instead of implying: well, the URL protocol has changed, WHERE THE heck WERE YOU? The protocol did **NOT** change in that regard, call me crazy? **EDIT2**: And if what the genius brigade said was actually true, then why doesn't the fix work...?

Read posts still showing with "Show Read Posts" setting turned off

It appears the recent update broke this too. All my read posts are still showing despite having "Show Read Posts" turned off. I've tried turning it on, reloading, and turning it off, clearing cookies, clearing cache, etc. Seems to be something on the server side.

As a community-creator, my health is not great, and I may be absent for various periods. Could my co-mod have full-mod powers please upon our little community?

Our specific sub is this: https://lemm.ee/c/eurographicnovels There is nobody better than my co-mod [Nacktmull](https://lemm.ee/u/Nacktmull) to carry on our community, but unfortunately, mod-powers are surprisingly-limited in basic-nature upon Lemmy, seemingly. Regardless, could my co-mod "Nacktmull" please be elevated to the same level as my basic mod powers? Again-- I'm the creator of the community, and main content-contributor.

Locked out of account (2FA)

I have already sent a message to @Sunaurus in hopes of removing 2FA from my account but I'm making a post here in hopes of either helping myself or others. It seems this is a common occurrence, I think I clicked "enabled 2FA" on my (other) account in the hopes of setting it up. When I tried to log in it asks for my password and 2FA (which I hadn't set up). I've read that resetting your password removes 2FA, however I've been unsuccessful when trying this. Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Comment sort by old seems to not be working, and some older remote comments not being fetched?

Checked between here and the same thread on a different instance and noticed sorting comments by old doesn't seem to be working here, that is, selecting the option on the web interface displays no comments whatsoever instead of sorting their display. An odder issue that I'm not as clear on is older comment fetching/display. In one case I found them not showing up here, but also not on the thread's home instance either, so I'm not sure what's happening there. In another I found them not showing up here, but they *were* showing on their home instance (different from the first, which may be why the difference).

All of my user posts are not visible

I went on a mobile app to check a post I made and it said “No posts.” I used the mobile web browser to check my profile and it again shows comments, but not posts. I checked the mod log for my username and found nothing. I can view the actual posts from an account on another instance, but seemingly not from the actual lemm.ee instance. Is this some sort of server error or were my posts removed or something? It’s very odd.

"Cooldown" for posts on the instance?

So I've tried to migrate the communities I've started on Reddit to this instance, but from what I notice, I'm able to make 2-3 posts (copying stuff from the communities to populate them and make people more willing to move over to Lemmy), but when I make the 4th post, it stalls, a spinning wheel shows up instead of the Create button, the thing never gets posted unless I refresh the page and paste again everything. Sometimes I have to this multiple times until the post gets published. This is quite tedious. Is there any way of getting approval for this stuff, or turn off the said "cooldown"?

Avatar upload?

Hi, I've been trying to upload an avatar for the past 10 min unsuccessfully (this also goes for the banner btw). My avatar is, at this point, 3.7kb... After massive compressing. It is a jpg. This seems like it should be small enough by all metrics, I can't even compress the image any more than this. And yet I still get "file too large" error messages. Is there something specifically about lemm.ee that I should know about image uploads? Is it the file format? Or just a bug?

Trouble x-posting a Lemmey.world Post lemmy.world

I've tried x-posting the linked URL to the lemm.ee saxophone community via both Jerboa app on Android and via the web. But, both methods fail and I'm wondering why. I read through some of the posts here and the original FAQ post, so I'm wondering am I unable to x-post because accounts aren't migrated between the two instances? And, would that mean I'd need to create a lemm.ee account? Is there another way than that? Thanks, all.

Unable to view some profiles

I like to browse in New and at times, it's overwhelmed by posts from the various reddit repost bots. I don't find those posts super useful and would prefer the Lemmy content, so I've tried to block the bots - but when I try to go to their profile, for instance, https://lemm.ee/u/bot@lemmit.online I get the busy spinner endlessly and it doesn't load. Loading it directly (not clicking from another page) I get the Cloudflare 504 Gateway Timeout that says 'Host Error'. Oddly, I can view it when signed out, but that doesn't help of course.

An admin deleted all my uploads and I have no clue why

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/5966765 > I have been uploading comic art images by Moebius for several weeks almost daily to the [!eurographicnovels@lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/c/eurographicnovels) community, where I´m a moderator myself. All those images have disappeared. Modlog says the images have been deleted by "admin". Modlog gives no reason for this but says the images were later restored by "admin" but that is not true. All my comic art posts have been destroyed and are empty posts now. I was not even contacted a single time about this and honestly can´t think of a reason because I had uploaded exclusively "safe for work" and apolitical material. We are trying to build a community for european graphic novels like "Tintin", "Lucky Luke" and "The Incal" and I put a lot of love in those posts because I want to help make our community interesting and grow. However - I have been stongly discouraged to contribute content now that I have seen it gets arbitrarily wiped by anonymus admins. How can I find out what happened, who deleted my stuff and why they did so? How can I avoid this happeing to my posts in the future?

Possible username abuse? (Resolved by lemm.ee admins Aug 29 2023)

Hey folks. A question for you. I'm RickRussell_CA on lemmy.world, kbin.social, lemmy.ml, and beehaw.org. When I saw that lemm.ee was coming up in the rankings, I decided that perhaps I should stake my claim here. But, as you may guess, [there is already a RickRussell_CA on lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/u/RickRussell_CA). It's even using the profile picture that I had originally used on lemmy.world. It's made 1 comment (on a since deleted post) and no submissions. I've used the "Forgot password" link and it's definitely not my account, as it doesn't recognize my email. I understand that this is a risk under the Fediverse model, but I'm a bit worried that somebody staked this out as a way of impersonating me. Is there any way to address this? EDIT: lemm.ee admins saw this post, and banned the account. Thanks to them!

How do you report a user for harassment?

This is my second account (I've ditched my first account after it's been stalked by an obsessive troll) and I'm already finding this website to be so much worse than Reddit. There's this user named "Dr Wesker" who keeps accusing me of being a troll and writing "fantasy ragebait". He comments on all of my posts obsessively. I've blocked him but he can still see and comment on my posts. How do I report this troll? Is there even a mechanism on Lemmy for reporting trolls?

[SOLVED... by itself] "[400] error: rate_limit_error" when crossposting

EDIT: I just tried again and now it worked. Hi, I tried to crosspost [this post](https://lemm.ee/post/3803003) to these 3 communities: - !dwarffortress@forum.stellarcastle.net - !dwarffortress@lemmy.ml - !dwarffortress@lemmy.capebreton.social And in all 3 cases I got a 404 with HTTP Response:: {"error":"rate_limit_error"} I've been able to x-post other posts, so it doesn't seem to be a general issue. Thanks
