Anyone Else But Me (2024) [Drama/Comedy] m.imdb.com

A low budget film from Joel Haver. I kind of ignored his feature length uploads after not liking one I saw before but I was surprised by how much I liked this. The premise is very unique and the characters are well-written. Worth a watch!

High Fidelity (2000) ⭐ 7.4 | Comedy, Drama, Music www.imdb.com

I stole your title template [@TehBamski@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/u/TehBamski) because i like it :) I like the actresses and actors, especially John Cusack (who is just a fantastic actor in general) and Jack Black, who stands out in another role that just feels like it's made for him (the other being School of Rock). The film also makes good use of its soundtrack and music in general and has some funny scenes, along with a simple but well paced main plot.

The Strawberry Statement (1970) ⭐ 6.6 | Drama, Romance (Topical - sorta) www.imdb.com

*Edit - I don't know why the the imdb link is shown in french. I assure you this is not a french film.* Seems like a great time to revisit this classic. It's got Bud Cort, a great soundtrack, political commentary, and some familiar events. It won the "Jury Prize" at Canne in 1970.

What are some movies that are best experienced going in completely blind?

I feel like everyone has had a movie partially spoiled by a trailer but I also feel like descriptions, movie posters, and even genre tags can be a give away and make a plot twist or scene less impactful. One movie I vaguely remember watching without any context was the 2021 movie Oxygen. I enjoyed it but I feel like it would have been slightly more predictable if I had looked at the genre tags and that would have effected my enjoyment. I feel like you need to have a pretty good sense of someone's tastes to make a "*trust me*"-style recommendation like this.

Man bites dog (1992) ⭐ 7.4 | Comedy, Crime, Drama www.imdb.com

- Be careful, this is a very disturbing movie - Make sure you watch the uncut version, some important scenes were cut from the first US release - Steve Buscemi named this film one of his favorite, this movie inspired Quentin Tarantino to write Natural Born Killers. [More about its legacy on wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_Bites_Dog_(film)#Legacy) The uncut version is on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXjQCjNZeME

Can anyone recommend a movie similar to The Fall or The Father that has a theme of spiraling confusion?

It's a bit hard to describe but I felt like both had moments of spiraling confusion with the protagonist watching their worlds fall apart around them that I found really captivating. I'm trying to think of other examples but [The Fall](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791/) and [The Father](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10272386/) are ones that came to mind. They are both fantastic films I'd highly recommend. --- frefi@lemmy.dbzer0.com mentioned [mother!](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5109784/) (2017) which was the other example that was on the tip of my tongue.

New Nightmare (1994) ⭐ 6.4 | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery www.imdb.com

Originally released as *Wes Craven's New Nightmare* in 1994, this movie was sort of a warmup in meta horror before Craven directed *Scream* two years later. It's arguably the best of the seven *A Nightmare on Elm Street* sequels and assumes a more serious, darker tone. If you're looking for that cheese established in the sequels (which Craven didn't direct, by the way), it ain't here. --- **Runtime:** 1h 52m **imdb synopsis:** A demonic force has chosen Freddy Krueger as its portal to the real world. Can Heather Langenkamp play the part of Nancy one last time and trap the evil trying to enter our world? **Streaming availability:** [https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/wes-cravens-new-nightmare](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/wes-cravens-new-nightmare)

Kedi (2016) ⭐ 7.6 | Documentary www.imdb.com

1h 19m imdb synopsis: "A profile of an ancient city and its unique people, seen through the eyes of the most mysterious and beloved animal humans have ever known, the Cat." Streaming availability: [https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/kedi](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/kedi) It's a nice low key documentary about cats and their effect on the residents of Istanbul. It's really well shot, and it goes without saying cat owners would find it most interesting. You don't have to be a cat person to appreciate it, though. Yeah, it's a fascinating take on Istanbul urban life, with little slice of life stories here and there. Also, cats!

Old Henry (2021) ⭐ 7.3 | Action, Drama, Western www.imdb.com

Slow burn western set in the Edwardian Era (1906), best if you avoid the imdb synopsis and any potential spoiler sources and go in blind. (1h 39m runtime)
