Two of the most asked features have been implemented: repeats a.k.a. boosts and adjustable theme colors at the channel and site level. Hubmins can also customize other components via the bootstrap sass variables. Under the hood we implemented a short term object cash which will improve performance when fetching objects. The internal use of ActivityStreams1 has been deprecated in favor of ActivityStreams2. Object integrity proofs (EddsaSignatures) according to fep-8b32 have been implemented. Interesting for developers: CI and the test environment have been vastly improved. Other notable changes are: refactored browser to browser encryption using the modern sodium crypto library and support for custom emojis with configurable emoji sets. For a complete list of changes in **Hubzilla 9.0** please refer to the [changelog](https://framagit.org/hubzilla/core/-/blob/master/CHANGELOG). A big **THANK YOU!** to all contributors and everybody who supports Hubzilla and its development. #### **Breaking changes** #### * The .htaccess file has been updated to fix an issue with recent Apache versions * Require sodium PHP extension * Require bcmath or gmp PHP extension * Require intl PHP extension * Versions \< 9.0 will not be able to decrypt encrypted messages composed in version 9.0 in the UI * Poke and Mood apps removed * Removed smiley button addon * Removed smiley\_pack addon * Removed emojione addon (use the emoji addon instead) * Removed fediwordle addon (use the fediquest addon instead) * Individual connection filters need manual intervention (e.g. replace `http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/share` with `Announce` when filtering repeats) #### **Update** #### * Backup your data * Make sure that the **sodium PHP extension** is installed and enabled * Make sure that either the **bcmath or gmp PHP extension** is installed and enabled * Make sure that the **intl PHP extension** is installed and enabled * Execute `util/udall` #### **Install** #### Please refer to the [install instructions](https://framagit.org/hubzilla/core/-/blob/master/install/INSTALL.txt). \#[Hubzilla](https://hub.somaton.com/search?tag=Hubzilla) is a powerful platform for creating interconnected websites featuring a decentralized identity, communications, and permissions framework built using common webserver technology. Federation with [#Bluesky](https://calckey.social/tags/Bluesky) (via [#ATprotocol](https://calckey.social/tags/ATprotocol)) is getting closer. The sandbox environment has now been launched, which means you can set up your own AT protocol-enabled server. It's possible that Bluesky will finally start federating by the end of summer. However, knowing how most dev teams work, this launch is not a certainty. It always takes time to iron out bugs. How successful do you think Bluesky's federation will be? And how will it impact the current userbase using Bluesky? I'm hearing rumours that [#NodeBB](https://calckey.social/tags/NodeBB) is adding support for [#ActivityPub](https://calckey.social/tags/ActivityPub). Some folks have told me that this implementation will have group federation capabilities similar to [#Lemmy](https://calckey.social/tags/Lemmy) and [#Kbin](https://calckey.social/tags/Kbin). I need to investigate this rumour further. If true, this is huge. At the very least, I know NodeBB is *discussing* ActivityPub. Android Authority doesn’t get it.

Android Authority doesn't get it. Compared to #Reddit, #Lemmy sucks. And so does #Kbin. We all know that. The #RedditMigration isn't about any app being better than Reddit. It's about a company that's grown on the backs of volunteer labour now claiming ownership of that labour. Reddit didn't write those posts, draw those illustrations, make those videos. We did. And Reddit sure as hell didn't create those communities, nurture them, and moderate them. We did. I agree with tech writers who say that the average person just "wants their memes". But Reddit never made those memes. We did. Content might be king. But who makes content? We do. I have no doubt that the average person just wants content. But while we might be providing content for free, we're not dancing monkeys. Who decides why content is made, how it's made, and where it exists? We do. The Fediverse doesn't exist merely as an engine for content. It exists so that people can share what they love. Why are people coming to the Fediverse specifically? Because we rightfully see ActivityPub as *insurance* for our content -- which, again, is made by and for us. Not Reddit. Not Big Social. Us. If I'm giving my content away for free, then so long as it is *federated*, no one company can own it -- putting up gates, demanding payment for *my* work. Instead, my work is out there, living on 24,000 nodes that presently exist. Android Authority might dismiss this as "suffering the same fate" -- what fate they perceive, I don't know. But to me, the true "suffering" is when a company like Reddit claims ownership of my work, locking 3rd party developers out from API access. For this reason, I'm locking Reddit out from my work. Perhaps the author of this post, Dhruv Bhutani, doesn't consider that he's writing for a, well, *blog*. And that this blog exists on its own domain, with its own design, as its own property. He could have written this entire post on Reddit, but he didn't. Why? I suspect it's because he believes his work has value, and Reddit simply doesn't give him what he believes is his worth. Same deal with me. I'm not looking to get paid for my work on Reddit. I do it for fun -- always have. But if I'm doing something for fun, it's still going to be on my terms. Not all of us creatives are willing to be a cog in Big Social's machine. That's why I'm here on the Fediverse right now. I don't give a damn whether the average person just wants memes. I create for *me*. So yeah, Lemmy and Kbin suck. I can live with that -- they will both improve. And I have no doubt that, with time, they might prove to be better than Reddit. But this isn't about how good Lemmy or Kbin are. Nor is this about the insatiable appetite for memes. This is about *my* need to create on *my* terms -- and I'm not alone here. Decentralization is the killer feature here. https://www.androidauthority.com/reddit-alternatives-lemmy-3335429/ @fediversenews@venera.social

Lemmy is def more active, and there's a growing sense of the Reddit-migration happening. Flipboard becomes first app to support Bluesky, Mastodon and Pixelfed all in one place techcrunch.com

Social magazine app Flipboard is continuing its **[investment](https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/28/flipboard-joins-the-fediverse-with-a-mastodon-integration-and-community-plans-for-activitypub/)** in the federated social web with today’s news that it’s integrating with decentralized social networks **[Bluesky](https://techcrunch.com/2023/05/05/what-is-bluesky-everything-to-know-about-the-app-trying-to-replace-twitter/)** and **[Pixelfed](https://pixelfed.org/)**. The move will allow users of the Flipboard mobile app to visually browse through posts and photos from both networks, comment, favorite, reply and scroll through custom feeds, like Bluesky’s “What’s Hot” feed of popular posts. Notably, this also makes Flipboard the first major tech company to integrate with Bluesky, the up-and-coming Twitter alternative that remains **[in an invite-only private beta](https://techcrunch.com/2023/05/02/bluesky-invites-become-a-hot-commodity-as-demand-for-the-twitter-alternative-outstrips-access/)**, as well as the first mobile app to support all three decentralized networks. Performance has been improved and memory consumption reduced. Directory sync has been rewritten from scratch. A possibility to flag directory entries unsafe or spam for directory admins has been added. Directory flags are being synced between trusted directories. Trusted directories are considered the ones listed in `get_directory_fallback_servers()`. Additional trusted directory servers can be added manually if your hub is configured to serve as directory. The channelreputation addon has been moved to addons-unmaintained. The way it has been storing its data has led to serious issues on hubs with many channels and nobody is maintaining it at the moment. For more info about the changes in Hubzilla 8.4 please refer to the [changelog](https://framagit.org/hubzilla/core/-/blob/master/CHANGELOG). I'm test driving [#kbin](https://mastodon.social/tags/kbin) for public groups. Like [#Friendica](https://mastodon.social/tags/Friendica), /kbin can ban trolls from participating in groups. Unlike Friendica, you can remove posts local to where the group is hosted. Unfortunately, the offending comments still appears in user timelines because other Fediverse servers do not delete after comments are removed locally. Another alternative could be [#Calckey](https://mastodon.social/tags/Calckey) which supports groups through "Channels". However these do \*NOT\* federate. [@atomicpoet](https://mastodon.social/@atomicpoet) [@fediversenews](https://venera.social/profile/fediversenews) is that really their justification (moderation being too hard)? Unfortunate really. Personally, if I could have picked between a Reddit or Twitter clone to be the gorilla of the [#Fediverse](https://mas.to/tags/Fediverse), I’d probably have gone for Reddit in a heartbeat. From what I’ve seen, [#Lemmy](https://mas.to/tags/Lemmy) definitely gets the most negative “press” for being a Fediverse platform that no one uses and isn’t worth your time. May not be undeserving, sadly.
