The interesting thing is that although I've almost never spent money on a gacha system and haven't played much gacha systems recently, my brain subconsciously craved for more but in a safer way.

That's why I created the JavaScript weighted playlist for myself: A random selection of songs from my music library where some songs play (much) more than others. Getting a super rare song is akin to getting a top tier drop. Additionally, the playback rate is randomized to a normal distribution, giving the tiny chance that a rare song can play with a wild playback rate. And if that wasn't enough, some Geometry Dash related songs can randomly skip to the next song, simulating watching someone try to beat some demon level.

I've created a skinner box for my brain that sometimes causes me to waste hours just clicking on the "next song" button to see what shows up next. My wallet was not harmed in the process (although it might soon be because I want it to work on a portable device, but that money would go to some niche open source hardware thing rather than a greedy gacha publisher).

No joke, I'm tempted to buy a Steam Deck (or true Linux phone) because... It can run a local HTML/CSS/JS app on a browser with filesystem access and audio support. This is the power of having an OS that is not locked down.

Speaking of which, what would you recommend for me to run a local HTML/CSS/JS app on a browser with filesystem access and audio support? (No, Android is too locked down to meet that spec) Other required specs:

    • Portable: Can fit in a pocket
    • 16GB or more usable storage
    • Bluetooth support
    • Ideally low-cost

One thing to add is that you should factor in the costs of the games and other console BS. If you want to use a physical cartridge, you have to pay another $80. Then, most games are $70. There is a subscription for online content. These costs can easily go over $1000 in total, and remember a PC can be used for more than just gaming. In some cases, it can be fair to compare a $1000-$1200 PC to this $700 console.

I get the thrill of going fast on a slow bike like the GZ250. I have dragged pegs and asked it to do ridiculous highway trips (once 80mi of highway in one go, on a bike that can barely do the speed limit), and I even tried offroading the poor thing. (I dropped it a couple times lol)

The Street Triple is a whole different beast. One that tempts me to go way too fast. Luckily, I can (usually) resist those temptations and just cruise along.

I am being safe. I keep any slightly naughty things away from traffic, and I am ATGATT. It's weird how unsafe some riders are, just today a bald man on a cruiser passed me on the highway with no helmet.

My first bike was a 2006 Suzuki GZ250, a little beginner cruiser bike with just enough power to keep up on the highway with it pinned in top gear. Comfortable and fun, especially around town.

After 3500 miles on the GZ, I made quite the jump to a 2012 Triumph Street Triple R. I wanted something sportier but still fairly comfortable (vs something like an R6, where there were plenty available near me). I didn't want something heavy or something that I would grow out of soon. I've only had it for about a month but so far I'm loving it! It's incredibly fast (to me ofc; can't even imagine what a literbike feels like), I really need to be careful with it lol

My Triumph Street Triple R (when it works).

After taxes, insurance, and service it cost me $5000, but when I twist that throttle and hear that screaming inline-3 at 11000rpm pulling harder than a V8 mustang, its intoxicating and I forget my worries, if only for a moment.

I know people IRL who start on 600s, and they are usually fine (although survivorship bias plays a role there). If you have a good grasp on how to ride motorcycles now, you're good, but it's risky for a noob to start on such a powerful fast bike.

I wouldn't recommend anyone starting on a 600 supersport of they haven't ever ridden a motorcycle before. Too much power, too aggressive ergonomics. 400s are still plenty fast to 60mph. My recommendation is 300cc-500cc for a sport or naked bike, or up to 800cc for cruisers (where you really gotta watch out more for high weight than high power)

A Rebel 300 or 500 makes a great beginner bike!

Also, don't be afraid to look at the used market for other metric cruiser bikes, they're plentiful and cheap. The 4 main companies are Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. Heck, I started on a metric cruiser, the Suzuki GZ250. It was kinda slow though, I'd recommend something with a bit more power than that.

Yeah, although naked bikes usually look a bit more like sportbikes (they were originally sportbikes without fairings, hence the term naked bike) than cruisers.

Honda also makes the Rebel cruiser bike, but they look less like a "sons of anarchy" kind of bike than the Shadow or the Fury, although I wouldn't recommend starting on a bike as big as the Fury.

Honda has been making all sorts of bikes for many decades now, and they generally are inexpensive and reliable, if slightly boring compared to competitors. The Shadow is a great option for a classically styled cruiser bike.

If you want both fun and comfort, try a naked bike! You get fairly upright ergonomics, but sporty street performance. Good beginner bikes would include the Yamaha MT-03 and Kawasaki Z400.

If you like crotch rockets, a beginner sport bike is a great choice. They're even sportier but still not very uncomfortable like the 600s. The Yamaha R3 and Kawasaki Ninja 400, or one of the older Ninja EX500's are my beginner recommendations.

If you like the big cruiser V-twins (that's Harley's thing) instead, something like a Honda Shadow 750 or Suzuki Boulevard C50 gets you that experience without paying Harley prices.

Speaking of prices, I highly suggest you buy a used bike as your first, because you may drop it while getting the hang of things and you avoid most of the depreciation of a new bike. Then, you can see what kind of riding you really want to do and upgrade from there!

My new ride: A 2012 Triumph Street Triple R https://lemmy.zip/pictrs/image/b7b77251-7941-4128-aa39-cb4d663f55d5.webp

It's been a good 3500 miles with the GZ250, but I've been itching for more power and better cornering potential. Also, I somehow spent $1000 in maintenance in 10 months for a "beginner" bike. So, I sold my GZ250 to buy this crazy motorcycle. I always wanted a high-revving inline-3 engine, and this bike was a good deal. What a difference it is! I went from being *slower* than 99% of cars on the road to *faster* than 99% of cars on the road. That and the difference in ergonomics make it feel like my first time riding again because I feel like a noob again. It pulls so crazy hard in lower gears that I don't think I've ever gave it full throttle below 4th gear, and it sounds *amazing* doing so. And whenever I take a corner, I consistently underestimate just how much I can lean, so I go almost unsatisfyingly slow, and the bike seems to say, "c'mon, chicken. Believe in me. You could've gone *way* faster than that." I hope to do a track day to remedy this mismatch between me and my motorcycle.

Why does DRM consume vast system resources even though we have TPM, Pluton, etc.

I've seen many instances of some software having DRM that significantly degrades the performance of the software, or worse, the performance of the entire OS due to heavy background tasks. Prime examples include Denuvo and all those Adobe background processes. Why can't they just simply use the TPM or the other 5 security chips embedded into the CPU so that they don't bloat the system?

Thinking of getting into self hosting but I'm a complete noob

I think of myself as technically inclined. I have installed Linux multiple times and have basic command line knowledge, and I've programmed in many languages, with the most experience making a static website game using HTML/CSS/JS. Additionally, I own the superspruce.org domain (my registrar is Dynadot), but I don't really know how to wield the power of owning a domain. I also have some spare computers to be used for hosting, a 2009 laptop running Lubuntu and a 3900X+32GB RAM desktop other running KDE Neon, but I'm also open to experimenting with cloud hosting too (I know, sacrilege here). However, I don't know much about the TCP/IP protocol or other networking protocols. I'm happy to learn, but the curve would need to start gently. I would want to try hosting my websites, and also a personal non-federated Lemmy instance to serve as a archivable forum for my games. Even if it's not very useful, it's great experience.

On a motorcycle? Isn't the entire point of motorcycles feeling the freedom of manipulating your machine to do what you ask of it? Without any AI and data selling nonsense? Please don't let this be the direction of motorcycling. AI is powerful has a place in many areas. Just keep it out of motorcycles, a hobby defined by skill, freedom, and most importantly, fun. Give us electric motorcycles whose tech adds to the experience, not tries to turn it into a IoT data harvesting device, please.

What is your dream motorcycle garage?

If you could have any three production motorcycles, with any budget, what would you pick? I'll go first: 1. Yamaha R1 (Sport riding and trackdays, also crossplane sound) 2. Triumph Tiger 900 GT (touring and adventure riding with an actually manageable seat height) 3. Honda Grom (for just hooning around for when I want a small light bike)

    Super weird error, what's happening?

I'm not sure if this is the best community to post in, but I just bought a used computer and slotted in an RX480 as the GPU. I installed KDE Neon 5.27 on it, and it worked flawlessly for 2 days. Then, even though it was working earlier today, it slept and then would not wake up. So I turned off the power and turned it back on again, and was greeted with this error screen: The only prior error message I'd gotten from the system was when I tried to install wine for one application, it told me some packages weren't up to date, without a way to fix it. I can enter the BIOS just fine. What is going on? How do I fix this?
