A lot of people here are recommending linux first laptops like tuxedo and system76 but if they are too expensive there's also dell and lenovo which are linux-second vendors. Every dell laptop I've used has worked great with linux and are reasonably repairable. The only things to watch out for are gimicky features like fingerprint readers or anything that would need custom firmware, and super slim laptops (for repairability and the potential for weirder parts on the inside) but even for weird hardware like fingerprint sensors, both dell and lenovo have been working towards supporting them on linux as well.

Yeah I think a major release is coming. I think they're working on making the browser more unique and polished before having an official release.

Its surprisingly useful (and fun) to be able to change the embedded image and title

I think that's a good thing because it means it's probably targeting normal people since the country is moving towards less reliance on things like windows.

not until years after I got out of school. I remember them skimming over the whole black panthers movement in general with a TL:DR Black panthers bad and violent, MLK good and peaceful.

if that's your problem with it then it's probably better off without you

yeah imo matrix is better in most ways except for being lightweight, though that is also being worked on. irc has a place but for normal use I think matrix is better than irc.

heads up the windows releases work but they can be messy because most of the devs are on linux/mac and testing windows is more difficult.
SirLotsaLocks 3 years ago • 100%
though they should remove those ugly sponsored top sites by default imho.
They're working on a whole new start/new-tab page that will fix that
also at the moment there's quite a few smaller updates between when the AUR version was released and now, it will probably be updated for the dot 88/89 release (probably 89 now since firefox 88 is about to be out of date)

I asked the devs and they said it might have something to do with them compiling on the latest ubuntu because then it can break on older ubuntu versions as well as some older distros in general. That's good to know.

I've never had that kind of problem, where do you usually run into them?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/67935 > New gecko based browsers are rare nowadays but this one is especially unique to me because it is more than just "firefox with tweaks" like a lot of the ones I've come across. The UI is different, it's working on custom settings, a new more powerful sidebar, a new theming system, and potentially IPFS/Dat support further down the line. It's very early in development but it's still impressive as it is.

It looks like it only officially supports linux and MacOS and BSD support is unofficial while active. I'd imagine if someone wants to put in the effort to support windows they could do it but at the moment I wouldn't expect it. You could try running it in WSL though.

you should read a bit more into china, america is starting a new cold war and with that comes a shit ton of propaganda, don't trust the government that's entire existence is base on imperialism to be honest about it's "opponents". It's angry it can't control like it can with other countries and that they can't invade it like they did in the middle east. China is about to overtake the US as the world largest economy within the decade and the US is hellbent on not allowing that to happen.
SirLotsaLocks 3 years ago • 100%
Oh yeah since that edit I've watched bayarea and read a lot abot china and I think I understand it a lot better now. It's a really cool country overall and I think it's one a the biggest hopes for socialism/communism in the foreseeable future. Thanks though I do appreciate you taking some time to explain it yourself too.

There's a system that ensures everyone gets the fruit of their labor, and that if someone is going hungry they are supported by the community instead of being left to die in the streets.

I don't really agree but even if that's the case it's definitely more than just gnome with a few plugins now. I imagine cosmic will be the same down the line.
SirLotsaLocks 3 years ago • 71%
Fwiw for people saying it's just gnome with a few extensions, the same could have been said for elementaryOS and pantheon DE when it came out, and look where they are now. They also might be doing it so that they have more control over what they're offering with their products instead of being expected to follow gnome.

I think the fact that it has multiple apps is a good selling point for a lot of people, let them pick what they want. There's also a project called carbon which aimed to create a discord ui for matrix, it's been abandoned now but it could be forked and expanded. It's pretty good as it is though, even without encryption.
SirLotsaLocks 3 years ago • 100%
I don't anymore, I run arco-linux now because I like messing around with multiple desktop environments. It's pretty good, but I think for stability Pop! is better, also it feels more solid and complete because it's a distro maintained by a company with a team dedicated to it. The Pop! shell is also pretty good.
SirLotsaLocks 3 years ago • 83%
I think Pop!_OS is a great choice, it looks good and is very customizable and gets hardware updates pretty fast.
I'm sad to see this, it's a really cool project. Still I respect their decision and it's not entirely dead but instead going into "hobby mode" where it's just maintained as the author needs, no more release dates for updates or planned features.

Yeah I agree, bandcamp is one of the few good places to buy music and it feels kind of shitty to abuse it. Maybe that's just internalized consumerism speaking though.
It's pretty cool. It can use either blink or WebKit and has it's own lower level extension system that somewhat reminds me of firefox's XUL addons.

I’ve been following DahliaOS for a while, it’s a zircon kernel and linux distribution. The cool part is the zircon part because it’s a new open source microkernel made for fuschiaOS from google that’s been built from the ground up. It’s cool to see their desktop environment be used outside of their distribution. The desktop environment itself is built off of flutter.
It's really simple so if you have 5 minutes give it a shot
this is basically what a lot of people seem to expect base minetest to be, a reasonably fleshed out MC alternative. to play, setup [minetest](https://minetest.net) 5.3.0 or later and install via content > browse online content.
